Term 1 Week 6

Bletchley Park Primary School Lot 5003 Balfour Street, Southern River WA 6110 | 9234 6400

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

Sadly, over the last two weekends the school was affected by a vast amount of vandalism, to witness such destruction of school property both in the alcoves and on the oval is extremely disappointing. We are working closely with Ed –Security and Canning Vale Police to identify those responsible for the vandalism. Could I please ask that if anyone in the community notices suspicious behaviour or sees others causing damage to please contact Ed security (1800 177 777) Caning Vale Police Station (9456 9555) immediately to report anything suspicious. To those in the community who take care of our school property and the oval I am grateful for the respect that is shown.

Things to look out for

unusual noises, such as glass breaking or banging unusual vehicles parked at a school on weekends or during

holidays groups "hanging around" on school grounds.

GOOD STANDING

We would like to remind all families that we have a “Good Standing” policy as a component of our Positive Student Behaviour Policy. Every public school was required to add ‘good standing’ requirements to its behavior policy.

This involves:

• Students who do the wrong thing will have privileges removed – such as being banned from school social activities. • Students can earn back ‘good standing’ by making amends and behaving well.

Our Good Standing policy is available on our website

STUDENT LEADERS’ CONFERENCE

Our Year 6 student Councilors are attending the 2020 Grip Leadership Conference on Friday, 13 March. The Grip Leadership Conference is unique in that it concentrates specifically on training student leaders for their role as school leaders. The style, topics, and content of this conference all focus on what the students can do right now. The goal is that our student leaders will come back to school with a clear vision, a solid understanding and a range of ideas for their time as a leader in our school community.

In week 8 our student leaders will also be presented with another unique opportunity to be part of the inaugural Nicholson Network Student Leader Conference. The program will include plenary speakers, workshop activities and sharing experiences.

How to tell if your child is experiencing

speech and language difficulties Telethon Speech & Hearing SPONSORED March 5, 2020 10:00AM

Every child learns, grows and develops at their own individual pace. From the first smile to

the first steps, there’s no set age for any of it to happen – and language is no different.

However, while the scope for development is wide, there are certain milestones and red flags

to be aware of which can help you decide if your child is on the right track.

As babies, our brains form over a million neural connections very early on. After this initial

phase, these connections are reduced so the brain can become more efficient. This process is

called pruning. Neural connections which babies and children aren’t using are pruned, and

the connections which are being used are strengthened.

Telethon Speech & Hearing Speech Pathologist Natalie Willacy said a child who was late to

make sounds, talk and use language may not be using, and in turn, strengthening the neural

connections in the language areas of the brain.

Page 3: Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members · include plenary speakers, workshop activities and sharing experiences. Kind Regards ... This process is called pruning. Neural connections

Newsletter 2020

“Talking to and engaging with your baby right from birth encourages and supports them to

use and strengthen these connections, ensuring a stronger foundation for language

development and learning,” she said.

So, what are the milestones and red flags parents and carers should look out for when it

comes to speech and language?

The milestones

Twelve months:

Beginning to use sounds, gestures and say a few words

Loves to make and copy sounds

“A one-year-old is typically very social and loves to engage with people close to them,

seeking them out and demanding attention because they want to connect and communicate

with you,” Ms Willacy said.

Two years:

Saying more than 50 single words

Beginning to put words together

Following simple two-part instructions and respond to questions like “what” and

“where”

“Two-year-olds love to say ‘no’ when they don’t want something and are starting to use key

words like ‘mine’ and ‘my’,” Ms Willacy said.

Three years:

Using four to five words in a sentence

Using a variety of words for names, actions, locations and descriptions

Starting to talk about things that happened in the past

“Three-year-olds love to chat and engage in conversation but might not take turns or stay on

topic,” Ms Willacy said.

The red flags

Twelve months:

Not seeking social connection

Not sharing social smiles

Not imitating gestures (like waving, or blowing kisses) and sounds

Two years:

Has only a very small bank of familiar words

Not joining words together

Has difficulty following instructions

Page 4: Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members · include plenary speakers, workshop activities and sharing experiences. Kind Regards ... This process is called pruning. Neural connections

Newsletter 2020

Three years:

Using very short sentences

Has a limited vocabulary

Being quick to act and give extra support to a young child who may be struggling to

communicate helps ensure the neural connections in the language areas of the brain are used

and strengthened. The early years are the optimal time for brain development, and a child

with a stronger foundation for language development will more readily use language to form

strong social connections with others and the world around them.

Ms Willacy said trusting your gut instinct was also vital when it came to your child’s

development.

“As a parent, no one else knows your child better than you do,” she said.

“That feeling or intuition something isn’t quite right can be there because you know your

child so well. Always trust your intuition, it’s a powerful thing.”

The Talkabout Program at Telethon Speech & Hearing offers Kindergarten and Pre-primary

classes which provide explicit, small group learning experiences for children needing an extra

boost with their speech and language. Classes are supported by a specialist teacher, education

assistants, speech pathologist, psychologists, librarian, family liaison and occupational

therapist.

If you think your child may be experiencing speech and language difficulties, Telethon

Speech & Hearing can help guide you to make the right decision for your child. Outcomes

from the Centre’s 2019 Family Survey showed 100 per cent of parents thought the Talkabout

Program was meeting their child’s needs, while 95.7 per cent believed their child’s

confidence had improved since attending the program.

Add Talkabout to your child’s kindy experience. Visit the website for a full milestone guide

or to find out more about the Telethon Speech & Hearing Talkabout Program.
