Dear Parents, Thank you for attending Curriculum night on the 29th. We are well on our way to having a great year. The students are "in the swing" and getting into a routine. Many of the students are utilizing STAT to complete homework and to get extra help. The staff highly recommends that students attend. With that said, this is a gentle reminder to students who do choose to stay for STAT that it is a work time. It is to ask questions, get support, and to complete work. Students must be in a classroom and stay for the entire period (unless they take a bus). Students are NOT to go to Starbucks, Safeway etc. before STAT. STAT is also an excellent time for a student to catch up on late work or assignments missed while sick. Our late work policy at Renaissance is stated in the handbook and student syllabus: "The expectation at Renaissance is that students turn in all work in on time as this is preparation for success in high school and beyond. While we recognize that occasionally events occur that are out of one's control, it is still expected the student completes the assignment in a timely manner. It is the student's responsibility to confer with the teacher about such assignments and follow through on the adjusted deadline. It is our belief that when a student consistently turns in late assignments, it has a detrimental effect on the learning process." It is the last line that is perhaps the most important. Learning is affected negatively when assignments are not completed. Students are not able to participate in the discussions which take place in the classrooms when an assignment is incomplete. Additional stress can occur if a student gets too far behind and assignments being worked on are no longer are linked to what is being taught. Skyward does allow parents to receive an email for any missing assignments. This is another tool which may help your child. At Renaissance the teachers have an agreement to update our grade books every two weeks. You may see some assignments logged into the grade book in one day, while others may take the entire two weeks to be entered. Please have your child contact the teacher he/she has a "missing paper" and believes it was turned in. The entire staff at RSAR wants each child to be successful. Our goal is for us--staff, parents, and students--to work together to make this the best year yet. Thank you for all you do. Karen

8th grade LASS Update

Hello Renaissance families. I just wanted to let you know where the 8th graders have gone in the first month of school in LA/SS.

The students have been working on a short story unit on perspective and developing their narrative writing skills both in non-

fiction and fiction. We will be starting our first social studies unit on Tuesday, 10/13/2015. The students will have a topic to

discuss at home this weekend in preparation for our first social studies unit.

Performing Arts Update

In all of the performing arts classes we have been focusing our attention on improv, developing a working vocabulary, and

creating a safe environment to take risks. The last few weeks we have been focusing more on movement and the connection

between movement and character development. Students will continue working on movement and character development next

week.

Thrill the World Update

There will be a rehearsal tomorrow Saturday, October 10th for Thrill the World in Mrs. Daman’s room from 10-11. Students are

encouraged to bring their costumes for ideas and input to “zombify” the costumes. The performance will be happening on

Saturday, October 24th at the Redmond Town Center from 12:00 – 3:30. Please come out and support our Renaissance students

and parents participating. If anyone is interested in chaperoning the students participating, please check out Volunteer Spot. The

dance will be performed at 3:00 pm.

Renaissance First Annual School Trip

Come one come all. Mrs. Daman is so excited to be working with World Strides to provide our students with the opportunity to

experience Washington DC. If you are interested, the trip will be the week of June 17 – 21, 2016. All Renaissance students have

received an invitation either yesterday or today. All interested parents should plan on attending the parent meeting on Thursday,

October 22 from 6:30 – 7:00 pm in Mrs. Daman’s room at Renaissance. This is going to be an adventure to remember.

SCHOOL DANCE: First dance of the year is Friday, October 30th 7:00 – 9:00 ASB will be promoting the dance

National PTA Reflections Competition 2015-2016

THEME: Let Your Imagination Fly

The Reflections competition is America’s oldest and large art education program of its kind. It is focused on encouraging students

to engage in creative activities and use their imaginations to make art in one of six categories.

The submission must be the original work of one student created for the purpose of the Reflections competition program. The art

should be a “reflection” on the theme.

The categories to choose from are: visual arts, photography, literature, film production, dance choreography and musical

composition.

Students can enter more than one category and enter more than one entry in each category.

Film, dance and musical entries allow for more than one student to be recorded, but only one student may be the director/creator

of the entire process.

A title and artist statement is required on the entry form.

Visual art and photography entries must be no longer than 24 inches, no taller than 18 inches, including any frame if piece is

mounted and no thicker than 3/8 inch.

Students: Remember to fill out the student entry form and answer all of the questions about your category, including size or

length of the entry.

Parents: Please sign the entry form allowing your child’s piece to be judged and displayed.

Due Date: Monday, October 26, 2015 by 2:00 pm.

Entry forms are available at the office. Please turn in your entry with a completed entry form to Mrs. Lerner in the RSAR Office.

Join the Holiday Craft Committee

RSAR will be selling the beautiful jar lanterns you created at camp at the 2015 Holiday Bazaar hosted by

Eastlake High School (November 7, 2015, from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM). Help lead the way—we’re seeking

student volunteers to tidy-up lanterns (glue back falling stones), create promotional signs and host our

table.
