Year 11 IGCSE Humanities Field Trip I am pleased to announce that we have 9 students signed up for the IGCSE Humanities trip to Vietnam and the trip will be going ahead. As this number of students has signed up we can get the cost down to 19,500 Baht. After paying the deposit, this leaves a balance 14,500 Baht payable by Wednesday 29th May. This includes flights, entry fees to all locations, accommodation, all meals, travel and travel insurance and Visa fees. As stated in the previous letter, there will be two members of Bromsgrove Staff going on the trip, myself and Ms Erika Beneke, both of whom have experience of this Vietnam trip. It will be a truly worthwhile and valuable part of your child’s education and help with class and project work. We will be using the Viet Vision travel company again: a very professional company we have used in the past, and which also provides educational tours to other prestigious international schools and universities. We will be flying Vietnam Airlines leaving Suvarnabhumi Airport on Thursday 12 September at 11:20am and arriving back at 6:30pm on the Tuesday 17. Flight time from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh is approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. We will be met at the airport by a representative of the Viet Vision travel company and travel by air con minibus with seat belts to the Cu Chi tunnels for the afternoon and then by minibus to the resort. Please see the attached itinerary for further details of the trip. The activities follow strict health and safety guidelines. Insurance will be provided under the top policy of the Mondial Insurance Company (please see the attached policy for coverage details). As well as being accompanied by Mr Hinds and Ms Beneke, there will be a professional English speaking guide provided by Viet Vision. Bromsgrove School will provide all the fieldwork equipment. There will be a parent’s information evening and final arrangements will be confirmed soon after school begins in August, though please do contact me at any time at shinds@bromsgrove.ac.th if you have any questions at all about the trip. Practical Information: Attached to this letter please find a parental consent form and medical information form. I would be most appreciative if you can complete these forms at your earliest possible convenience and anyway by Wednesday 27 June at the latest, in order that the organization of the trip can proceed smoothly. We will also need a photocopy of your child’s passport (the page with the photo and passport number), so we can book the flights. Visas are not required for Thai, Korean or Russian nationals but please check your child’s passport extends for at least 6 months after September 2013. IGCSE Humanities Vietnam Trip Itinerary 12 Sept: Ho Chi Minh City – Arrival – Cu Chi Tunnel Arriving in Saigon, the group will be welcomed at the airport and then transferred directly to Cu Chi for a half day tour. History students will experience and document the role the Cu Chi tunnels played in the guerilla resistance of the Viet Cong against US forces in the Vietnam War.They will see firsthand the effectiveness of booby traps in asymmetric warfare. Geography students will undertake a historical tourist site evaluation. Afternoon: transfer back to Saigon, check in hotel. Meals: Lunch and Dinner at fine local restaurants in town. 13 Sept: Ho Chi Minh city tour After breakfast, depart hotel at 8am for Reunification Palace, the former Presidential Palace for the president of the South of Vietnam (and scene of the famous 1975 photograph of an NVA tank crashing through the palace gates). After that, a visit to the War Remnant Museum, to witness countless artifacts, photographs and pictures documenting the second Indochina war. History students will use the material here to research and document the effects of US heavy bombing and the use of chemical defoliants such as Agent Orange. We will also stop at Notre Dame Cathedral and the Old Post office. Lunch will be served at a restaurant in the city centre. In the afternoon we will visit Ben Thanh market, Cho Lon, Chinese Town and market. Here students can experience southern Vietnamese daily life. Then, back to the hotel at around 6pm. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner 14 Sept: Ho Chi Minh city – Mekong Delta At 8am, we leave Saigon behind and head to Vietnam's rice basket, the Mekong Delta. Geography students will document and research how successfully the impacts of tourism and agriculture have been managed. We will pass through idyllic, rural scenes until we arrive at My Tho, a peaceful town on the bank of the Mekong River, where we will visit the Vinh Trang Pagoda. Next, we will journey by boat down the Mekong, visit local homes and orchards, a coconut candy workshop, a honeybee farm, take a sampan ride on palm-shaded creeks, try a taste of seasonal fruit and honey tea and enjoy a performance of traditional Southern singing. We return to Saigon about 5pm. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner 15 Sept: Ho Chi Minh city – Departure Guided free time for last minute shopping then transfer back to the airport for our flight home. Trip ends.
