A week in an English jungleIETTP teachers went to SAES on 25th to 29th April. They observed how the

American students study and taught a lesson. We asked five questions about the unique experience.

1. What was your first impression of the class you observed in one word?•classroom: colorful faces and colorful classroom, carpets, small number of students, building like a big garage, tidy classroom, well-organized classrooms•students: calm, cute, well-disciplined, quiet, paid attention to the teacher•teachers: not kind, over-controlled, compliments, organized

2. What do you think are the strengths of SAES (compared to yourschool)? All the interviewee were teachers, so all the answers were related to the support systems for teachers - Firstly, they have many special subject teachers for Spanish, Music, Art, and other supporting teachers who work with lower level students. They have a lot of supplementary materials - worksheets, activities, games, or grammar books besides the course book which were given by the government. Secondly, they don't need to do administrative work not related to teaching. Thirdly, bad behaviors policies were strict and the principle deals with students with serious behavioral problems. In addition, there are 20~25 students in a class and teachers can choose what grade they teach every year. Generally support for teachers in SAES are better than in Korean schools.

3. What do you think are the weaknesses of SAES?SAES should think more carefully about the environmental- friendly cafeteria for example, consider the possibility of putting something (like a carpet) on the walls and the floor to reduce noise pollution. Balanced menu and prevention of noise leads to healthy minds and bodies.

4. Tell us the most memorable episode.•my lesson worked well •compliment from parents helpers (I thought they were teachers)•disciplining a naughty boy•a student asked me why I always looked angry (I was not angry, just nervous)•one student asked me to hug her after 2 days. He was so cute.•a field trip•wrong response to teacher's question( I misunderstood)•I met 3 different teachers because my homeroom teacher was sick on the first day•When the homeroom teacher was off, students went crazy.•I saw an interesting lesson that a US soldier and a Korean soldier taught

5. Would you like to work in SAES? (and why?)Most of the teachers said 'YES'. The most popular reason is they think it can be a good chance to improve their English and teaching skills. Other reasons included getting to know more about American culture, fun and interesting experiences, and a few teachers prefer their working hours(8:30 to 3:30). A couple of teachers said yes because students of SAES are nicer and more polite than their students.

Characters from Extensive Reading

by Olivia & Woo ja

There is an Extensive Reading Course on the IETTP. We choose 2 books to read a week.

We said that ‘Reading in English’ was difficult and boring at first, but we found out

it’s a good way to improve our English. We did a survey about our favorite characters.

◎ Can you match these books after reading the summary?

She is a kind, warm-hearted and large African lady. She is also the only female private detective in Botswana. With help of her secretary, Mma Makutsi, and her best friend, Mr JLB Matekoni, she solves a number of difficult problems. For example, a missing husband, a missing finger and a child. She solves these mysteries in her own special way.

Orphaned in childhood and despised by a cruel aunt who is her only known relative, she has no one but herself to trust. Unaided by money, family, or beauty, she relies on her intelligence and integrity to help her survive. After she becomes a governess in Thornfield, she is in trouble with her moody employer, Mr. Rochester. Why she is in dilemma all the time, and how can she be happy?

(Evening class)

◎ We’re a big fan of bright and independent women. It is very optimistic to meet characters when we have some troubles in real life. They

give us lots of dreams and hopes. Through reading books, we could improve not only

our language but also reflect on our life. Maybe we've enjoyed the extensive reading

course because of the meaningful lives of the characters.

◎ We found out that the most popular characters were women. To be honest, all of us

are female so we had sympathy for them. Now we are going to tell you why we like these

characters. Try to match the pictures with the sentences.

1. She endured her adversity and showed us independent female character to find her

happiness.

2. She has a bright character and she makes people around her happy.

3. She sacrificed herself for 17 years without any rewards. But she finds her path and

her dream.

4. She is a kind, warm-hearted and first lady detective.

What type of trainee are you?

by Jisuk & Jasmine

Have you ever been very excited about attending IETTP course so much so that you can’t sleep?

Have you ever been out of breath when you arrived in the classroom?

Have you ever brought some snacks for the classmates?

I would not go to the cinema even if my classmates asked eagerly when I have to prepare micro teaching or presentation.

Whenever nobody wants to an-swer a teacher during a lesson, I say something because I can’t take the silence.

I would bring my textbooks even if my bag was too heavy to carry.

Would you attend this course again if you had to prepare TP every two weeks?

Have you ever had any com-plaints from your family because of studying English?

I have opened my text books at home during the course at least once.

Wow~ You’ve had a wonder-ful time during the course but it is highly recommended that you attend a stricter and more challenging course.

You have a really balanced attitude about the course. You have killed two birds with one stone! Why don’t you try being a university student instead of being a teacher?

You might have really improved your English but you really should pay atten-tion to your family and your dark circles.

1. Don’t forget to write in your learning journal’s once a week. I personally think having things written on paper will help you to retain what you’ve learned and it’s a nice record to keep. 2. Arrange time outside of class to practice speaking English with your fellow trainees. It might feel unnatural but if you allocate a specific hour you can concentrate on improv-ing your language skills in a more comfortable environment like in a café!

Tips on Co-Teaching

by Cher and Joanne

In Korea co-teaching between a Korean English teacher and a Native English Speaking teacher is

very common these days. Thanks to that students can learn English and English culture in an effective

way. However it causes some problems at the same time.

What are the problems? And how can we resolve the problems? In this article, we’re going to talk

about some problems and solutions about co-teaching.

We’ve interviewed some trainees, and

they’ve mentioned many things below.

We collected some solutions about

1. We have to be between the boss (the vice-

principal or the principal) and the co-teacher

when they have some complaints about each

other.

2. When there are some misunderstandings,

KETs think it's because of a lack of under-

standing of Korea of NESTs, whereas NETs

think it's because of a lack of speaking abilities

of KETs.

3. When we have a social-gathering event at

school, KETs are expected to take care of

NESTs.

4. When Korean-co teachers clean up the

classroom, they want the NETs to help. How-

ever, NETs don’t understand why teachers have

5. Some NETs demand too many things- from

opening a bank account to changing the bulb in

their apartments.

Overall, it will be very helpful if you follow these basic tips below.

— Set some rules and boundaries — Share the responsibilities more evenly — Respect each other — Organize workshops and social outings — Be more flexible and understanding — Introduce a dispute resolution procedure

KETs need to learn useful phrases to pass on

complaints. e.g I've got some feedback from

the principal. He/she thinks ~~ instead of

using “you’d better” or “you must”.

There needs to be good communication be-

tween both parties and try to deal with one

point at a time.

Find some who speaks a bit of English and

then run away. They can have a fun time to-

gether.

NETs should help the KETs clean up the

classroom. It could be included in the contract.

If the task requires Korean it's the job of the

KET to help out. We can make a phone call for

them rather than having to make unnecessary

trips. However, if it's not urgent, the KET

should explain it's not their job.

Must-visit Walking Courses After a month of taking English lessons all day, you might feel tired. It’s time to start exercising. Get your walking shoes ready and try walking with your classmates. There are many places to walk near SNUE that we would like to recommend.

by Kate and Monica

Triple Parks (Seoripul, Monmarte, Seorigol park) ★ About this park There is a good forest near SNUE station which consists of 3 parks (Seoripul, Monmarte, Seorigol). You can see a nice view of tall buildings and enjoy beautiful flowers and grass on the low hill. The course is about 4km and easy to walk. It’s also near Seorae village where a lot of French people live. ★ How to get there Go out of exit #11 at Kyodae station, turn left at the SK petrol station and walk 100m. Then you will find the entrance to the forest.

★ Course Seoripul park→ worm-shaped bridge→ Monmarte park→ Seorigol park→ Bangbae station (2hours, 5km) ★ Tips It was very easy to walk and we were amazed by the stunning views in the park located on the hill. We even saw rabbits there. It was also quite close to the subway station. If you want to walk along a quiet path through the forest, we strongly recommend this place. Please don’t hesitate to ask other trekkers if you get lost.

The Seocho Alps (Mt. Guryong~ Mt. Daemo) ★ About this walking course Mt. Guryong is 306m high and Mt. Daemo is 293m high, which are in the districts of Seocho & Gangnam. People call it Seocho Alps because it has beautiful scenery like the Swiss Alps. The Main strength of this course is that you can enjoy two mountains at the same time. Their two peaks are connected so you can trek along the ridge. ★ How to get there 1. Get out of exit #7 at the Yangjae subway station(Yellow line). 2. Take the bus #4322 and get off at KOTRA 3. Cross the street and you’ll find the entrance to the mountain path which is located beside KOICA ★ Course KOTRA→ Mt. Guryong→ Mt.Daemo→ Suseo subway station (3hours, about 6km) ★ Tips 1. Go up to the deck to see the marvelous view designated by Seoul city near the peak of Mt.Daemo. 2. Even if you are sometimes confused which way you have to go, you don’t need to worry. Orange ribbons which hang on the branches of trees will lead you to the right way.

Mt. Woomyeon (just 10minutes from here~!) ★ About this mountain Mt. Woomyeon is 293m high which is very close to SNUE. There are a lot of trekking courses covering Seocho, Yangjae, Woomyeon and Kyongki province. You can see a deep forest with lots of pine trees. Fully breathe in the fresh air and enjoy good views of the buildings in the Gangnam area. ★ How to get there

You can start from ‘Seoul Art Center’ (Nambu bus terminal exit #4). There is a footbridge on the main road which is connected to the entrance of the mountain. ★ Course You can get to Somang Tower (the highest point) and choose one of the courses as follows. 1. To Sadang (subway line #2&4) – 2hours 2. To Namtaeryong (subway line #4) – 3hours ★Tips 1. Read the signposts carefully and don’t enter the military safeguard areas on the way to Namtaeryong. 2. You can make a wish by stacking one stone on to the Somang Tower.

Keep Cool in the Summer Heat

How do you keep cool in boiling hot summer?

Here are some spine-chilling films you can enjoy.

The Sixth Sense (1999)

Former cop Brian O'Conner partners with ex-con Dom Toretto on the op-

posite side of the law. Brian and Mia Toretto (Dom’s sister) brake Dom

out of custody and try to avoid the police and the other gang. Now

backed into a corner in Rio de Janeiro, they must steal cars as a last job

in order to gain their freedom. On the other hand Federal agent Luke

Hobbs never misses his target. When he is assigned to track down Dom

and Brian, he and his strike team launch to capture them. Unfortunately

his teams is attacked and are killed except him. He changes his mind

and helps Dom and fights against the corrupt police. How thrilling to

cheat them! It is beyond your wildest imagination with car racing action

from beginning to end.

Director : Justin Lin

Cast : Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson

Genre : Drama, Action, Thriller

Fast Five (2011)

Directed by Bong Joon-ho and starring Kim Hye-Ja as the mother, and

Won Bean as her mentally slow son Yoon Do-Joon, Mother is a thrilling

drama. Do-Joon lives with his mother who loves him fiercely despite his

bad behavior. A high school girl is discovered dead on a rooftop in town.

The police arrest the boy but the police can’t figure out why and who

left the girl’s dead body there. The mother is horrified and unconvinced

that her son is capable of murder. She scours the town, uncovering de-

tails of the girl’s life. The mother murders and burns an old junkyard

keeper who says her son murdered the girl. The films ends with a similar

scene as the beginning- the mother dancing emotionlessly.

Hye-Ja Kim delivers a ferocious performance and the story line is very

mysterious but feels terribly real.

Director: Bong Joon Ho

Cast: Kim Hye Ja, Won Bean

Genre: Psychological thriller

Mother (2009)

Bruce Willis appeared as a child psychologist and Haley Joel

Osment who sees dead people are main actors in a movie. Bruce gets to

know his real existence while they help ghosts who have died. There are

two reasons to recommend this movie. First of all, the movie makes you

believe that ghosts appear in real life without any special effects. Secondly,

there is a twist at the end. I felt deeply impressed to see that ghosts were

delighted when their wish is

accomplished and it made me think of the world after we die. Watch the

movie if you want to sweep away the heat in the hot summer.

Director : M.Night Shymalan Cast : Bruce Willis Haley Joel Osment Genre : Drama, Mystery, Thriller
