Dear Student: Congratulations! You have been invited to participate in the 2017 Delta College Middle School Mathematics Competition. This year’s competition theme is “Math Around the World” and it will be held on Saturday, March 18 th from 9:15 am – 2:00 pm. We hope that the day will be fun and exciting for you and your family, teacher, or coach! Have your parents check out the activities available to them during the time you are testing. After the test, you and your family are free to have lunch and/or attend any of the scheduled afternoon activities. Remember, the focus of the day is celebrating your abilities and participation, and having some fun! We will also be selling our ever popular T-shirts. This year’s T-shirt theme will be “Math Around the World!” There will be “Mathematics” written in the top 12 languages spoken in Michigan! Can you identify them?? We will try to keep the price very affordable at $10 each (cash or check only please). Lunch will be available for purchase in Delta’s commons…a menu with prices is enclosed (cash, debit & credit cards are accepted for lunch). Also, attached are a general schedule and a map. An awards ceremony will be held in the Gymnasium from 1:00-2:00 pm. Pictures of the award winners will be taken at this time. It is our hope that everyone will stay for the entire awards presentation and help us honor the students from all grade levels. During the awards presentation we will have a raffle for a number of door prizes. We have graphing calculators and several other great prizes. You must be present at the Awards Ceremony to win the door prizes! (Please note: If you are not one of the top winners, your score will be posted outside of the gym doors after the ceremony by your ID number that is assigned to you in the testing room.) Middle School Math Competition

General Schedule – Math Around the World!

9:15 am – 9:45 am Registration: Delta College Gymnasium, area N on map. 10:00 am – 11:30 am Distribution of Test Materials and Competition Test

Students will go to preassigned rooms for testing. (Parents may not accompany students in testing room.) Parents…check out the activities planned while your son/daughter is taking the test!

(Students need to bring calculator of their choice from home.) 11:30 am – 1:00 pm Free Time students and parents: Parents meet students at registration area. There

will be time to eat lunch and/or attend activities of your choice. 1:00 pm– 2:00 pm Awards Ceremony in Gymnasium The top students in each grade will be recognized. Pictures of the top 25 winners at

each grade level will be taken immediately following the presentation of awards. (Pictures will be posted [2- 3 weeks after] to the Math Competition website. Parents: If you do not want your child’s picture or name posted on the website, please let us know as soon as possible.)

Students, Parent(s)/Sibling(s) and Teacher Activities (10:00 to 11:30) (Test takes place from 10:00–11:30)

Competition Student Test-Takes place from 10:00-11:30 OIT Presentation-TBA Parent Testing– Parents take the tests yourselves! (sorry, no siblings…parents only-$1.00 charge) Fitness Center – P Wing Open 8 a.m.-4:30 pm

o Facilities include: pool (OPEN swim 11:00am - 4:00pm), weight room, exercise equipment, gymnasium, and racquetball courts. Daily options include individual passes for $5.00 per person or a fun pass for $20 which includes 2 adults and up to 4 children under the age of 18 or 1 adult and 5 children under the age of 18. Photo ID required at the time of purchase. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Children swimming under the age of 6 must be accompanied by an adult in the water. Please bring your own towel and lock for locker.

Scheduled Post-Test Activities (11:30–1:00)

We will run thrilling activities from different countries around the world, such as our famous “Pi-throwing” station from ancient Greece.

Among our math activities this year, we will have a Rubik's Cube challenge from Hungary, Chisanbop from Africa, Origami from Japan, and Cuneiform Arithmetic from Babylon. Time to show off those math skills!

Performances will be held by a professional martial arts team and also beautiful dances implemented by Bavarian and Hawaiian dancers! Stick around for their performances from 12:30-1:00 in the gym!

All this on top of our classic scavenger hunt and signature raffle. You can't lose!

So get set for a fun, fast-paced, and entertaining day at the Delta College Middle School Mathematics Competition,

on Saturday, March 18, 2017!
