Do you have what society recognized to be the most valuable of resources: toilet paper!?! With our perceptions sharpened by all that we have endured it is easy to imagine that we might actually devise a plan that could preserve us and our loved ones, come what may. I have seen in myself, and all around that there was a need to be more prepared for the ways things can shake our world. Even though toilet paper may be valuable isn’t there something even more important? As Christian we prepare ourselves with the one thing that is valuable in all circumstances: Faith. Faith is the most precious of resources because it is the means by which we are connected to life itself. Without faith to trust in God’s willingness and ability to bring us through life’s difficulties and tragedies, how could we endure them? Without faith in God’s ultimate goodness how could we meet great challenges with confidence? Without faith in redemption how could we hope to see good in the face of so much bad? The shelves of faith are never bare, because they are filled by a God who will always supply. How can it be then, that we can find ourselves in a “crisis of faith?” Sometimes we feel lost, as though the supply of faith that connects us to Christ is dangerously low, or has run out. Like other resources, we run low on faith when we don’t stock up. The time to stock up on faith is prior to the crisis. We must endure each trial with the faith we possess on that day. There are no quick trips to get just a bit more at the last minute. Take my advice, now is the time to stock up. Where do we go to stock up on this precious commodity? “Faith…” the apostle Paul tells us “comes through hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17) Faith cannot be drummed up for just any place, but it should be sought where it is promised to be found. It is the Gospel, which is the power of God for salvation. This is where God promises to be found, this is where faith is grown: where his Word is spoken. The preaching of the Word is certainly a part of every church service, and so I can tell you that if you want to grow your faith, you can do so here at Trinity. But this isn’t the only place where God’s Word can be spoken. When you share your faith with others, faith grows. The faith you impart with the sharing of God’s word is not removed from you, but it grows within you by giving. Faith that is spoken, faith that is lived out in action is faith that can be relied upon in times of trial. Faith that is used is faith that is tested. Faith that is exercised is faith that grows healthy. Now friends, I pray that we are done with crises for the year, but I fear that our faith has only begun to be tested, as we will need to heal the divisions that have formed, and unite under something more than an earthly cause. I pray that each of us stocks up on faith for the time ahead. With enough to endure whatever comes, and plenty left to share with those in need. Come hear the Word, share in it, let it grow in you, and give it to others, so when the next trial comes we are ready to meet it in faith, hope, love, and unity. God bless and keep you, Pastor Kevin McClain

Dear Trinity members and friends,

If unity is to be found in any place in 2020, it can be found in this truth. None of us were

prepared for the way that things happened. No one was prepared for the way that things have

changed. Who is prepared for the ways they may still yet change? September, I came to learn

was “National Disaster Preparedness Month” a month for people to examine what they might

do to be ready for a disaster. Do you have food? Do you have water? Do you have what

society recognized to be the most valuable of resources: toilet paper!?! With our perceptions

sharpened by all that we have endured it is easy to imagine that we might actually devise a

plan that could preserve us and our loved ones, come what may. I have seen in myself, and all

around that there was a need to be more prepared for the ways things can shake our world.

Even though toilet paper may be valuable isn’t there something even more important?

As Christian we prepare ourselves with the one thing that is valuable in all circumstances:

Faith. Faith is the most precious of resources because it is the means by which we are

connected to life itself. Without faith to trust in God’s willingness and ability to bring us through

life’s difficulties and tragedies, how could we endure them? Without faith in God’s ultimate

goodness how could we meet great challenges with confidence? Without faith in redemption

how could we hope to see good in the face of so much bad?

The shelves of faith are never bare, because they are filled by a God who will always supply.

How can it be then, that we can find ourselves in a “crisis of faith?” Sometimes we feel lost, as

though the supply of faith that connects us to Christ is dangerously low, or has run out. Like

other resources, we run low on faith when we don’t stock up. The time to stock up on faith is

prior to the crisis. We must endure each trial with the faith we possess on that day. There are

no quick trips to get just a bit more at the last minute. Take my advice, now is the time to stock

up.

Where do we go to stock up on this precious commodity? “Faith…” the apostle Paul tells us

“comes through hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17) Faith cannot

be drummed up for just any place, but it should be sought where it is promised to be found. It is

the Gospel, which is the power of God for salvation. This is where God promises to be found,

this is where faith is grown: where his Word is spoken.

The preaching of the Word is certainly a part of every church service, and so I can tell you

that if you want to grow your faith, you can do so here at Trinity. But this isn’t the only place

where God’s Word can be spoken. When you share your faith with others, faith grows. The

faith you impart with the sharing of God’s word is not removed from you, but it grows within you

by giving. Faith that is spoken, faith that is lived out in action is faith that can be relied upon in

times of trial. Faith that is used is faith that is tested. Faith that is exercised is faith that grows

healthy.

Now friends, I pray that we are done with crises for the year, but I fear that our faith has only

begun to be tested, as we will need to heal the divisions that have formed, and unite under

something more than an earthly cause. I pray that each of us stocks up on faith for the time

ahead. With enough to endure whatever comes, and plenty left to share with those in need.

Come hear the Word, share in it, let it grow in you, and give it to others, so when the next trial

comes we are ready to meet it in faith, hope, love, and unity.

God bless and keep you,

Pastor Kevin McClain

The September 8, 2020 meeting of Church Council was called to order by Pastor Kevin McClain and opened with devotions and prayer.

Pastor McClain noted many new things are happening, albeit slowly, but well regarding alignment, structure, services, membership and activities. The staff has been working on long range planning.

Pastor Koch reported Luther Club went well with guest speaker Andrew Foster of Come Alive Church on Cottage Street. He spoke about being a black man in Ashland County. Tim Shreffler of the congregation will speak at the next session about being a police officer in Ashland County.

Adam Kime of the Christian Education Committee noted Sunday School has begun and is going well.

Joe McFrederick spoke on behalf of Kenny Oberholtzer for the Outreach Committee that more money is needed to handle all the requests that have been submitted without turning away worthy applicants. After a discussion, Council decided to make funds available from the Outreach Missions Fund and the Bequest & Memorials Fund to accommodate the needs of the Outreach Fund. The distribution rate on the endowment investment funds was increased from 3.5% to 4.5% for a limited time.

Council decided on a donation of $5,000 to the Ashland Symphony to provide virtual concerts. This is in line with the usual donation Trinity makes to the symphony for the Pops Concert in memory of Maxine Rybolt.

In addition, the Wolfes for the World Medical Mission Organization is seeking funds for a medical clinic to treat starvation in Mwanamugimu, Uganda. Those involved in the Ethiopian Medical Mission group were consulted and are in favor of this effort especially since travel to Ethiopia isn’t safe. Council approved a donation of $10,000 from the Ethiopian Mission Fund to cover the request.

Stephanie Bragg reported for the Kitchen Committee that they are handling funeral lunches per COVID guidelines for now. Instead of potluck style food prepared in various homes and donated, the kitchen staff is preparing the food according to health department guidelines. Council approved that they prepare a caterer-like menu and can request cash donations to offset the cost of food to families.

Joe McFrederick, for the Technology Committee noted they have begun installing equipment to live stream the sanctuary services.

Chad Emmons of the Property Committee noted they have received proposals to repair the water issues that have been a problem for years in the Community Room and youth rooms. Council approved the repairs at a cost of $18,400 from the Rybolt Fund to be completed this fall.

Larry Franks of the Property Committee noted a door going into the courtyard next to the sanctuary will be replaced with a metal door within the next few weeks. Also, painting and caulking have been completed on the window project. Windows have been ordered and are slated to be here by the end of October.

It’s important to note, that the very generous bequest from Maxine Rybolt some years ago has continued to make it possible to complete needed repairs around the church. Praise the Lord!

Ken Milligan and Pastor Koch of Senior Ministries noted tentative plans for a movie night for seniors using the inflatable movie screen.

Melissa See of Women’s Ministries noted plans for a book signing with author, Karin Schwan of Trinity. Bill Smith of the Worship & Music Committee noted money from the TAFA Fund is being used to

provide music classes twice a week for the Montessori preschool. The singing choirs are still on hold, but the Bell Choirs are starting up.

Scott Rivenburgh of the Youth Committee reported they hosted a game night in August with 40 kids in attendance. Youth Sunday went well, Mosaic begins tomorrow, and Catechism starts this coming Sunday.

Pam Bradley reported for the Montessori Preschool that they have started up, but with less children and increased costs to meet CDC and state guidelines for COVID. They are looking for substitutes to help in the classroom as needed.

Bill Smith noted for the Safety Committee they are locking the doors on the Chestnut Street side near the Montessori for added security during preschool hours. There is a schedule set up for volunteers to monitor the TVs on Sundays. A suggestion was made that the ushers be able to monitor cameras from the usher’s station, this is being explored.

The meeting was adjourned and closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

HELP WANTED: Tr inity has been enrolled in the Stephen Ser ies for 2 years! The Stephen Series trains and organizes laypeople to do one-on-one caring ministry to people in need, equipping people with the basic skills of helping others who are hurting. Through this ministry, the whole church is built up and made stronger. Most recently, Stephen Ministers along with other caring individuals from the congregation have been making phone calls to all our members for support and help. We have seen how beneficial it is to have trained Stephen Ministers in the congregation on a regular basis and in times of crisis. We are now

recruiting Stephen Ministers to tentatively begin training in January 2021. We are looking for people who like to learn and listen. Perhaps you (or someone you know) would

like to consider learning more about becoming a Stephen Minster? If you would like more information about Stephen Ministry, contact Michelle Vanderzyden at the church [email protected] or 419-651-1564, or pick up an application in the Church Office or request it to be sent to you.

Stephen Ministry is seeking those in need of care. If you or someone you know is going through a tough time and would like someone to walk along with you, we are here to share the load. Contact a pastor, Stephen Minister or Dan Forbes (419-289-2126 or [email protected]) if you would like to learn more about how Stephen Ministry can help you.

Mark Your Calendars, Ladies! Everything has looked different this year, and the Women’s Christmas Brunch is no exception. But because we don’t want to miss one more thing, we’ve decided to have a Free tickets will be available in the Church Office beginning November 9. Monetary donations will be accepted at the event with all proceeds going to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention/33 Forever, a local non-profit focused on suicide awareness and prevention.

Due to Covid restrictions, our typical brunch will not be served. Beautifully decorated tables will fill Jack’s Place and lovely Christmas music will fill our hearts with joy and a promise of the coming Christ child. Join us to share in all the beauty and wonder of the Christmas season.

We will have designated times arranged for viewing the tables so that we can control the number of people in Jack’s Place at one time.

If you are interested in being a decorator this year, please contact Dawn Forbes.

Care receivers share how their Stephen Ministers made a difference:

“My Stephen Minister listens—really listens. He doesn’t judge me or tell me what to do but walks side by side with me. I

never realized how helpful and healing that can be. With his care and support, I’m making it through.” Care receiver “B”

“My Stephen Minister’s weekly visits became an anchor in my life—something I could rely on when everything else was so

uncertain. She was a steady reminder of God’s presence, helping me know I was never alone.” Care receiver “H”

I’m blessed with an amazing Stephen Minister. She’s been genuinely attentive and caring ever since she came alongside

me. She’s kind of fearless in that way—she’ll just be there without trying to fix me or talk me out of my feelings as I struggle

with what’s happening.” Care receiver “N”

What if you could change the world – not just for today

but for generations to come? At Moms in Prayer

International, we believe that a mom can be the single

greatest force for good in the lives of her children and the

children around her. We believe that lives and whole

communities are changed forever when moms gather

together to pray to the only One who can change a

human heart. Moms can make the difference as they

reach out to God in prayer- moms just like you. Pray for

your children and their schools as we continue our 3rd

decade of prayer in Ashland on Monday* mornings

during the school year. If this time does not work for you,

please contact Michelle Vanderzyden to discuss a time/

group that will work for you.

Each week thousands of groups meet in more than 70 countries for chapter-by-chapter Bible study. Hundreds of thousands of members around the world, studying God's Word together. Verse-by-verse, we approach the Bible as God's Truth, to be studied, savored and lived out. We believe God's Word speaks across cultures to every one of our 400,000+ members around the world. Whether new to the Bible or a seasoned reader, we explore Scripture together. This fall we will begin our study of the book of Genesis.

BSF in Ashland is open to any woman who would like to participate in a meaningful Bible study with other women (this fall of 2020, a men’s class will also be available as close as Wooster). BSF in Ashland has begun the year with virtual groups on Zoom for Thursday at 9:00 am and 8:30 pm. If you would like more information about joining BSF, visit www.bsfinternational.org or contact Michelle Vanderzyden at [email protected] or 419-289-2126.

Baby Bottle Campaign

First of all, THANK YOU Trinity members and friends for the most generous outpouring for the Rummage Sale this spring and summer! We collected over 7700 pounds of quality soft goods and household items, which netted over 1,400 dollars towards Women’s Ministries! Thank you to all the folks who helped to organize and package the donations, and those who loaded the truck. A HUGE thank you to DIANA SCOTT for her dedication to the cause. Diana worked nearly every week, sorting and bagging clothes. Over 200 bags of clothes! Thank you also to Julie Guenther, Melissa See, Kari Emmons, Erin Chandler, Heather Jurjevic, Herb Kanzig, Darrell Frank, Jerry Morton and Dan Forbes. Here's to many clean closets and kitchen cabinets! At least until next year!

Brethren Care Village (2130 Center Street, Ashland)

The Greens Bistro is a lovely setting with delicious food.

If it’s chilly, maybe we can sit near the fireplace!

It has been quite an unusual year, hasn’t it? It has certainly needed more than its fair share of prayer! The Women’s Ministries team would like to invite you to a short time of fellowship and prayer each Wednesday in October, beginning October 7, from noon to 1:00 p.m. Bring your lunch to the Trinity room and we’ll begin with a little fellowship to get to know each other and a brief time of prayer. Each week a member of the Women’s Ministries Planning Board will be there to facilitate the group. No need to sign up - just come and bring a lunch, bring a prayer! Contact Dawn Forbes for more info.

All 7-12th graders: join us for a special

Mosaic on October 7 from 6-8pm in Jack’s

Place. This year many of us had to give up

a lot of the normal things that keep us

grounded. It’s okay that life situations

affect us, and it’s okay to express hurt, to

vent, and cry out to God like the Psalmist,

“Save me, God! For the water has risen to

my neck. I have sunk in deep mud, and

there is no footing.” So on this evening

we’re going to do something unusual for

Mosaic. Come share your burdens and cry

out to God with us. We will have comfort

food (pizza dinner), therapeutic dodgeball,

and music.

Since we will not be hosting a shoebox packing party, we will make shoeboxes available to so you can pack a box that will put a smile on a child’s face and Jesus in his/her heart.

Boxes can be picked up in the Sanctuary Gathering Space, and outside of Jack’s Place. Just pick-up a box or more if you like and follow instructions inside the box. Return the boxes by Nov. 7 or 8 so they will be blessed on Sunday, Nov. 15.

This year Trinity will be hosting the Operation Christmas Child (OCC) Collection Center for Ashland and surrounding communities. We will be collecting boxes Nov. 16-21 and storing them in the garage until they will be delivered to the OCC pick-up site in Ontario.

Please keep OCC in your prayers. The need is even greater this year due to the pandemic. If you have any questions or comments, please speak with Dawn Forbes in the Church Office or Ruth Ann Linder at 330-683-0096.

Your Shoebox Can Go Where Missionaries Can’t (A message from Franklin Graham)

“This might be the most important year to ever reach children with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In the midst of a

pandemic, children are frightened, families are struggling, and people don’t know what hope they have for the future.

We want children around the world to know that God loves them, He has not forgotten them, and that He cares for

them very much. Operation Christmas Child is a powerful way to share the message of God’s love, and we are

proceeding full speed ahead so we can deliver gift-filled boxes to millions of children.

Every shoebox gift you can pack represents one more boy or girl we can reach with the Gospel. Dozens of countries

that have been wracked by the coronavirus are opening back up to receive and distribute shoebox gifts. At a time

when many missionaries have had to retreat from their fields, our church partners worldwide are stepping up into the

gap and are ready to use these gifts along with the literature we provide to share the Gospel.

I want to encourage you, your family, and your church to pack as many shoebox gifts as you can. If shopping for

gifts is not practical for you right now, you may want to Build a Shoebox on our website, samiritanpurse.org/occ. Most

importantly, pray for the children who will receive your gifts.

What better way to make sure the Gospel message continues to be proclaimed “to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8)?”

We were happy to welcome our students back to Beacon on

September 8! It is great to have everyone together again. Our

theme verse for this school year is Ephesians 2:10, “For we are

God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so

we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” We have

been discussing how we are each created uniquely and for a

purpose. Our students enjoyed creating their own masterpieces in

the form of scented watercolor paintings. The watercolor paints

were made from different flavors of Kool Aid. It was fun to see their

creativity on display! Another highlight of our first weeks back at

Beacon has been Creative Movement with Mark Koehler, or “Mr.

Mark” as our students know him. The children enjoy music and

activities with him on Thursdays.

If you are interested in supporting the Beacon Program, please

consider donating toward scholarships for our students. We are

offering scholarships to all of our returning students this year. We

are grateful for your support and prayers as we look forward to the

learning, growth, and fun to come this school year!

The children are working so beautifully and eager to learn. On the second day of school, more than one child approached me at different times, “Mrs. Duffey, will you please give me a lesson?” I love how the children enjoy learning. They are courteous and respectful. It is a joy to watch them grow and to develop concentration at this level.

We have one volunteer team at Trinity that has served the same family

for 2 1/2 years. The team consists of Diane Emser, Leader, Cheryl Gaus,

Judy White and two couples from First Presbyterian Church. The parents

foster a girl with special needs and also have four children of their own.

Diane would like to share what serving this family has been like for

her:

“Growing up, my parents were also foster parents. I believe this

gave me a tiny insight to what fostering is about. When the

opportunity to be part of a Fostering Family Ministries team came

around, I was definitely interested. I belong to a great team of

people who provide meals and support to our fostering family. The

family receives one meal a week that is made by a team member.

There are other ways to help provide support to the family as

well. They may include taking part in activities and events planned

for families that foster, additional help for the family such as

transportation or childcare if accredited and oh so importantly,

covering them in prayer.

What I have found in being part of this team is a great sense of

gratitude toward the Fostering Family. I know there are times of

frustration and sadness in fostering, but there are also times of

great joy and satisfaction in doing this work for the Lord. I am

thankful there are families in our community that are willing and

able to open their homes to foster children. We have such a great

need here in Ashland County. And I count it a privilege to provide

such a small effort to support their great ones.” Diane Emser DC
