Chairman casts decidingvote to remove Said DeepBy Joe SlezakPress & Guide Newspapers

DEARBORN Just one no vote wascast at the City Council meeting July 24,but it was enough to block a re-appoint-ment to the City Plan Commission.

With Councilmen Brian ODonnelland Mark Shooshanian absent, andCouncilwoman Suzanne Sareini leav-ing early because she was ill, anythingapproved by the council had to be by aunanimous vote because four votes areneeded to approve anything.

The no vote came from CouncilChairman Tom Tafelski on the re-appoint-ment of Said Deep to the City PlanCommission, making it 3-1. Deeps termwould have ended June 30, 2015.

Mayor Jack OReilly asked Tafelskito table the vote to the next meeting, which will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, butTafelski instead called for a roll-call vote.Councilmen Robert Abraham and DavidBazzy and Councilwoman Nancy Hubbard

voted yes.Tafelski was unavailable for comment

Monday and Tuesday. If this had gone before the entire coun-

cil, as the mayor requested, we wouldnt behaving this conversation, Deep wrote inan email after the vote. Tafelski is beingdisingenuous with comments that thiswasnt personal. He had every opportunityto simply table the vote until the entirecouncil was present at another meeting. But thats politics in Dearborn.

OReilly said in published reports thatthere was a concern that Deep had writtenon his blog, deepsaidwhat.com, about theGoodwill Industries store that was beingconsidered for downtown west Dearbornwhen the issue was before the commis-sion. OReilly said he asked Deep not toblog about matters before the commissionif he were re-appointed, and Deep agreed.OReilly told the council about the agree-ment during the Committee of the Wholestudy session July 19.
