DRAWBACKS OF IMPORTING ELECTRICITY FROM INDIA

We cannot control the overall supply of electricity in our country. If anything goes wrong in India than we also have to suffer in Bangladesh. Recently the Black out that occurred in whole Bangladsesh because of Indian Electric plant switches off. Bangladesh had nothing to do on that incident .

Due to Import of Electricity from India we have to pay them a lot of money and also we have to give them few extra facilities like Transit and Transhipment.

Transit option is not at all beneficiary for our country. Rather its doing a lot of damages to our infrastructure. Same goes for Transhipment also.

Bangladesh has now decided to provide a corridor for Indian power transmission, from Assam to Bihar. In return, India has promised to increase power exports to 1500 MW in the near future, which would partially diminish Bangladeshs persistent power shortages.

A comparison can be made with the Russia-Ukraine crisis, in which Russia retains a powerful bargaining chip in the form of its shipments of natural gas. Since the falling out between the neighbors, Moscow has (through state-owned Gazprom) raised the gas price with more stringent payment terms. Russia has even threatened to cut off the natural gas supply entirely, something that would be catastrophic for the struggling Ukrainian economy.

Bangladesh that is heavily dependent on Indian electricity could conceivably face a similar scenario in the future. In any disagreement, India could use its power card to keep Bangladesh in line. As a much smaller country, Bangladesh is already at a disadvantage in negotiating with India, a position that may be exacerbated with greater dependence on Indian power.

We have to keep that in mind that although India-Bangladesh relations are at an all-time high, Dhaka has mostly failed to extract anything tangible from the Indian side.

YES ! Bangladesh can produce electricity on their own .Yes we know its very expensive but :

Latest technology can be used- we might attract foreign investors (e.g. from Japan, Korea, USA) to invest in our domestic power plants, in return of high monetary rewards, hence they can also suggest and bring to latest technology to produce electricity in the most efficient way .

Government can also motivate private sectors to come and invest in this sector.

Environment friendliness- we can introduce renewable energy sources like Solar energy, natural gas, hydro electricity .

We can start the shut down plant in our country to increase the production capacity of BD. We can invest to start the production in shut down plants of Kaptai hydroelectric Dam,Chittagong-Raozan thermal power plant and Shikolbaha power plant .

We should cut off illegal line in our country.

Can Bangladesh Produce Electricity On their Own ?

Benefits of Producing Electricity

Its a long term benefit.

We can avoid dependency on our neighboring country.

We can make our self self-sufficient on electricity production.

A lot of new employment opportunities will be created.

After meting our own demands we can even export electricity to other countries.

Future Plans of our Government

The Ministry of Power and Energy has been mobilizing Tk. 40,000 crore ($5.88 billion) to generate 5,000 MW of electricity to reduce load shedding into a tolerable level within next four and half years .

The PDB would hire furnace-oil based 1,000MW of electricity from private sector.

The government would install furnace-oil based 800 MW capacity of power plant.

The government is trying is level best to improve the coal and mining sector to use it more to reduce the wanting level.
