In 2013, Deborah Heart and Lung Center became the only hospital in Southern New Jersey to install the Siemens Artis Zee, a hybrid catheterization lab. This state-of-the-art system allows ourphysicians to visualize a patient’s blood flow into the heart, brain, arms, abdomen, kidneys, legs,and toes with unprecedented flexibility and precision. The use of this new technology greatly increases diagnostic certainty and reduces the amount of time the patient spends in the cath lab.

Last year, Deborah Heart and Lung Center andDeborah Hospital Foundation prepared to launch intothe next chapter of our future. A number of years of

careful strategic planning and thoughtful use of our financialresources laid the groundwork for several new medicalprograms designed to enhance our core business strengths. It is crucial to point out that without the support of theDeborah Hospital Foundation, many of our new medicalinnovations would not be possible. The generous support ofour donors, corporate partners, friends and volunteerscontinues to make the most sophisticated medical careavailable to our patients. In 2013, we opened our Multi-Disciplinary OncologyClinic in partnership with The Cancer Institute of RutgersUniversity. Our partnership with this highly-regardedprogram extends Deborah’s pulmonary offerings to the nextlevel of care and allows patients to receive a comprehensiveteam approach for lung cancer treatment…close to home. Funded through a grant from the Robin HoodFoundation, the inception of our Respiratory Evaluation forSandy Program (RESP) has taken Deborah’s pulmonary team“on the road” and into the hometowns of our neighborsaffected by Super Storm Sandy. Our team screens forrespiratory abnormalities caused or exacerbated by exposureto mold, respiratory irritants, and chemicals used during theclean-up process. We are grateful to be able to provide thisvaluable community service to ease our neighbors’ minds anddirect them to follow-up care if needed. While 2013 proved to be an exceptional year for theFoundation with many noteworthy happenings, three eventsstood out as deserving of special recognition: Deborah was once again the recipient of theoverwhelming kindness of Wakefern Food Corp./ShopRitethrough their gift of more than $1 million; furtherconfirming their untiring dedication and commitment to ourgreat mission. Wakefern Food Corp./ShopRite has been oneof Deborah’s longest and most philanthropic benefactors.Since the late 1950’s, Wakefern Food Corp./ShopRite, whobelieve in showing true community service to all of their

customers, has contributed over $40 million to Deborah.Everyone here at Deborah and the countless numbers ofpatients who have benefited from their generosity areextremely grateful for the compassion and concern WakefernFood Corp./ShopRite has demonstrated by further enablingDeborah clinicians to deliver the highest quality patient care. Greg Olsen, PhD was so inspired by Dr. David Murphy,Pulmonary Chair Emeritus at Deborah Heart and LungCenter, that he made a major gift to create The Dr. DavidMurphy and Greg Olsen, PhD Pulmonary RehabilitationDepartment. This gift included the purchase of the Endo-Bronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) which assists physiciansin detecting lung cancer at its earlier stages. Dr. Olsen hasour most sincere appreciation for his giving andphilanthropic nature. And lastly, we are so thankful for the gift left to Deborahfrom the estate of Ms. Suzanne Holmberg in the amount of $2.1 million. Words cannot express our gratitude to thisindividual for having remembered Deborah, for havingvalued our mission, and for having such benevolence for others. We are looking forward to another banner year ofnotable achievements with our donors, patients and clinicalstaff. Thank you for being on this journey with us and foryour unwavering support of our mission.

Today Deborah volunteers continue to function in various capacities with one simple goal of helping others. In2013, our volunteers and supporters played a unique role in raising funds and spreading the word of Deborahthroughout their communities. Working alongside these dedicated individuals who have impacted the lives of

others has been one of my most rewarding experiences as Director of National Volunteer Services. During this year, I have witnessed the hard work and dedication given by volunteers through the many events heldby chapter members, outside organizations and individuals. I am extremely proud of the fact that our volunteers notonly provide an unbelievable amount of talent and energy, but they can always be counted on to give of themselves

while expecting very little in return. They are truly the motivat-ing force behind our success.

In 2013, with help from a grant by The Robin Hood Foundation, Deborah Heart and Lung Centercreated the Respiratory Evaluation for Sandy Program (RESP). This program provides both cardiovascular and pulmonary screenings to individuals aged 12 and older who were affected byHurricane Sandy. Through a series of outreach events in 2013, RESP screened 930 individuals inOcean and Monmouth counties. Of those 930 individuals, 85 required follow up care.
