Chart positions don't bother us any more, says Stevie WinwoodIT was, we agreed, an unearthly hour

to attempt an interview. There satStevie Winwood hunched in a chair, allghostly pale and drawn, tinted specsmasking his tired eyes. After playing withTraffic at the Speakeasy until the earlyhours and then tripping through Londonby night to watch Spooky Tooth re-cording a Bob Dylan song, Stevie hadmanaged to catch only a few hours' sleepat a time when all good men and trueare rising to a new day's work.

And herc he was, at 11 on a Mondaymorning, trying to answer questions as intelli-gently as he could.

" Anyway, it's a nice day," said Stevie, peeringsleepily through the windows of Island Recordson to Oxford -street below and sipping a cup ofmachine -made hot chocolate to soothe his bat-tered nerve ends.

Chris Wood and Jim Capaldi, whom he hadlett at Jim's flat, were on their way to join usbut, Stevie explained, they were hampered by thefact that they had only one car between them.

Chris has a jinx with cars. He only has todrive one for five minutes and it's sure to breakdown," said Stevie, .bravely mustering a smile.Apparently the jinx had struck Chris last weekwhile on his way home to London. He wasforced to abandon his car half way down theA40 and hitch the rest of the way into town." I expect the fuzz have got it bynow," said Stevie.

Traffic are now back amid theseclusion of their cottage in Berk-shire whenever they have the timebut in the charts they are not asyet moving too well with the Win -wood soul -buster, No Face, NoName, No Number."

This fact doesn't perturb Stevieovermuch. " It is a track from ouralready issued ' Mr. Fantasy ' al-bum and I don't think it's ascommercial as our other singles,"he opined.

" Anyway we're not toobothered about singles becausein the future we'd like to con-centrate more on LPs.

Not good" In the past a lot of things

have relied on our singles beingin the charts and we want to getover that. In some ways popularitycan rely on the charts and I don'tNirik.14 is a good thing. It is forsome people maybe but it isn't forus."

Stevie is of the opinion that arock 'n' roll revival is now a fact. But he says : " I don't think anygroup has really been so far from

TRAFFIC (I to r) JIM CAPALDI, CHRIS WOOD and STEVIE WINWOOD.

TRAFFIC WANT TOPUSH ALBUMS NOW

rock 'n' toll. It's never been thatfar away."

As a member of the one theleading progressive groups, did hefeel that progress had reached astalemate as some rock revivalistsare saying.

No, not really, because thisrock thing is progression itself inits own way There is still roomto go ahead. There are lots of waysto go and one of the ways caninvolve rock 'n' roll. We might dosome rock, but I think we are onour own road."

What then are the influencesaffecting Traffic ? " They havebeen based on each other, ratherthan through other groups and

By NICKLOGAN

musicians," said Stevie. " Whenwe started and were living in thecottage we began by talking to-gether and getting to know eachothers' ideas on music before weactually did anything.

" What we really wanted todo was to take things that weregoing on around us and just ex-press them in musical terms. Notnecessarily political things, justthings that were happening

around us. We have reachedsome of these achievements butthere is still a lot we have todo."

Film songTraffic have recently been in-

volved in a sudden glut of per-formances but they have set asidetime to work on the title song fora new film " The Touchables,"to be released in a month or two.The song, which will run over thetitle atracks and at, the end of thefilm, will have the same name andcould be released as a single. Ascomposers, Traffic have no clearcut roles but roughly they work

as Stevie, the musician; Jim, thelyricist ; and Chris, the one con-cerned with the overall sound.

As the NME was going to press,Traffic were on their way toAmerica for their first US tour, which will take in an appearanceat San Francisco's famed FillmoreStadium. They finish in New Yorkwhere they will be going into theRecord Plant studios to recordtracks for their new album.

I asked Stevie how much ofTraffic's act was improvised onstage. " We work on basic struc-tures. Practically every number isimprovised from there. And we'vefound that since there's only threeof us, since Dave left, it has beeneasier for us to do it that way.We can get a lot more spon-taneity on stage.

Good and badBut because so much of it is

improvisation," Stevie continued," you must have bad nights as wellas good nights. At the Speakeasywe thought we weren't much goodbut afterwards friends were com-ing up and saying we had been thebest they'd seen us for ages.

" You can easily get all screw-ed up thinking about it andprobably the best thing to do isjust to go out and play. Youcan think too deeply about it attimes." Unfortunately we have got this

thing in America where everybodyhas heard of us and everybody isgoing to be there watching. And ifwe thought about that too muchit could screw us up. I supposereally it is a matter of nerves andyou should just go out there anddo it."

There was still no sign of Chrisand Jim, who were probably stillat home in bed, so with Stevie re-gaining his alertness and gettingquite deep at times we chatted onabout a number of things includingrock, progression, the Beatles' newsingle, Spencer Davis and BobDylan.

Stevie is an ardent Bob Dylanfan and tells a story of a time twoyears ago when he met Dylan inEngland and they went to visitsome haunted ruins somewhere inthe countryside. Later in the day, back in London, Dylan sat downand started stalking about every-thing and anything that came intohis head.

" It all began whh him talkingabout his mother," said Stevie," and he went on for about threeor four hours before ending up

talking about his mother again.Perhaps he was just trying to bafflepeople. It would be nice to meetup with him again in America."

Stevie said Traffic would loveto record a Dylan song and in

' fact there were seven or eightdemo discs by Dylan floatingaround in London. These in-cluded " Mighty Quinn " and" Too Much Of Nothing," thesong Spooky Tooth had beencutting the night before. The talk turned back 4o pro-

gression. " In a way progress isalways backward looking, one stepforward two steps back," saidStevie. " The Who and the SmallFaces have gone back. This rock-and roll thing is going back to theroots and starling again from there, maybe out on a different limb thistime."

As long as there arg groups likeTraffic around with Their eyes al-ways on new horizons I -don'tthink there is any danger of musicreaching a dead end

NEVER BETTERTONY BENNETT gets better all

the time and that is saying a-great, great deal, On his latest

tour he packs some twenty songsinto his 50 minute act, backed by theraving Buddy Rich orchestra of 4trumpets, 3 trombones, 5 saxes, piano, bass and drums, under Tony'sMD, John Bunch.

Caught at Hammersmith Odeon onopening night, Tony delighted the twopacked houses with sentimental songs(" She's Funny That Way," " I LeftMy Heart In San Francisco," " If IRuled The World " and " SomeoneWho Needs Me "), swinging tunes(" Bubbles Will Soon Fly Away,"" Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain'tGotta Swing," " Sunny Side Of 'TheStreet ") and same humour with aCharlie Chaplin take off during" Firefly."

Tony is also a great compere, givingband soloists, his musical director,Buddy Rich and the band Itselfseveral plugs during his own perform-ance. Tony assures maximumapplause with his belting, attackingendings of songs, and he starts themall with an arresting intro. Whatmakes him such a good singer, though, is that he makes the songsound good in the middle, too I

The Buddy Rich Orchestra takes upthe first half, with Bud's terrificdrumming during " Bolero " and the" West Side Story " finale medley. He also chats away in humorousstyle. A .E.

STONES ARE ON THE RAMPAGETHOSE of you who have followed my series of word -by -word battles with the Rolling Stones

may have been disappointed to read in the last episode how our anti-heroes appeared tohave mellowed! But now is the time for reporters with faint hearts to run for the shelter ofa nice `safe as milk' interview with Dave Clark-for the news is that abnormal service hasnow been resumed! The Stones are rampaging again!

Straight into the jaws of theJaggerwock " I ran when

attending a " Rolling StonesRehearsal " in a small privaterecording studio in Surrey. Out-side the studio and guarding thedoors were Stu, all-round roadmanager and tour manager TomKeylock, who greeted me againafter some 14 months by remov-ing the upper portion of his jaw.containing five new teeth(originals were lost in actionduring 1967, while defendingLewis Brian Jones on stage inAthens) !

Inside the studio were three of theStones - Keith Richard, CharlieWatts and Mick Jagger (on guitar)-going it at several hundred wattsper second while a flower -childwilted in time to the music, cross-legged on the floor. Bill Wyman andBrian Jones were conspicuouslyabsent.

Mick was apparently sufferingfrom a mental -hangover afterlistening to Trogg Reg Presley beinginterviewed on the radio recently.Every now and then he would burrto a question he found embarrass-ing: " Ooh arr, but oi'd rather livein Andover!" in mimicking tones.

Was this rehearsal a prelude tothe Rolling Stones making more liveappearances ? Is Mick to play guitaron stage ?

Sarcastic" Oh yes," smiled Mick sweetly,

" We are hoping to make severallive appearances shortly from ourwheel -chairs. In fact, I think youcan safely say that live appearancesare a thing of the future. No, ofcourse, I don't want to play a guitar-I want to go on stage and do allthat leaping about, don't I ?"

"No-we're rehearsing becausewe've forgotten how to do it.We've forgotten how to put theplugs in the amplifier. We're justhaving a good time rehearsing."Filling in the gaps elsewhere I

ascertained that Mick has beenplaying guitar now for almost ninemonths and from what I heard ismaking creditable progress. Thegroup has been using Mick as aguitarist with both Brian and Keith

Out on what looks like a leisurely stroll with BRIAN JONES leading theway are STONES KEITH RICHARD (who could -have a nasty accidentif he doesn't look up from that paper) and CHARLIE WATTS doing

some hedge -row nature study.

and the combined sound of allthree going it is enough to blow anyother group off the stage.

Keith Richard, in a violent purplesuit, had also adopted his best being -interviewed ' manner and tothe question ' Have you writtenmany new songs ?' replied: " Infact, we have !"

Was Jim -my "Gentleman ' Miller-also in the studio-to be theproducer on their nest single and

album ?" In fact, he is ?" agreed Keith.Brian Jones was not there,- was

he ?" In actuality be is not," agreed

Keith. " He is in Paris, celebratinghis birthday."

Why was Bill Wyman not there ?" He's got a bad leg," suggested

Mick. What about this rumour of a

world tour ?

ONCE MORENME's Keith

Altham finds

to his cost!" As soon as Bill's leg gets

better . . ." said Mick, adding in adi voice, " And at this point wewould like to play a record for BillWyman who is in St Stephens'Infirmary with a broken knee . . ."

Why had the Stones decided onJinsrny Miller, who produces Traffic,to be their record producer, whenpreviously they had done all thework themselves ?

" It's very hard on the legs," saidKeith. " You have to keep runningfrom the control room to the studio. And besides, the lead on myamplifier isn't long enough."

No egoMick became a little more forth-

coming. " I liked the work thatJimmy did on the early SpencerDavis recordings. " Gimme SomeOf Your Loving," and on NirvanaSpooky Tooth and the ' ChrisBlackwell Experience.' Most of theproducers I know are on someweird kind of ego trip --he is not."

Both Mick and Keith felt thatwith Jimmy's assistance they couldhave a new LP ready in a muchshorter time. Were they satisfied with the sales

of the last album and why had theyreleased a single, She's A Rain-bow,' in America but not inBritain ?

" How many did it sell ? I don'tknow," said Mick. " I never countthem. Anyway, we didn't want torelease a track off the album as asingle in Britain because the two orthree hundred people who boughtthe album would have already got

She's A Rainbow'. We want toOr them value for money."

Had Mick heard Bill Wyman'scomposition, " Shades Of Orange,"which has been recorded by theEnd ?

" Lady Madonna ?" asked Mick," Yes, I've heard it. It's great !"

" No," I replied, the best straightman in the business, " Bill Wyman'ssingle Shades Of Orange, which heproduced for the End."

" Bob Dylan.," said Keith, Yeah-great number !"

But what about Bill Wyman ?" The Byrds ?" queried Mick.

" Yeah, they're great too."You don't have to hit me with a

brick-I know when someone doesnot want to talk about Bill Wyman'ssingle he produeed for the End. Butwe got the plug in didn't we, Bill ?" What about Mother Earth ?" I

asked, referring to Mick's indepen-dent label, which he is hoping tolaunch.

" Yes, her single's coming outsoon," agreed Mick. " Really, I

didn't want anyone to know aboutMother Earth until we had time toget it off the ground but a lot ofpeople started shooting their mouthsoff too soon." A few straight wordsfrom Jimmy Miller might help soberthe situation, I thought, and so was

ow

Chief antagonist MICK JAGGER.

--he p:ensed to be producing theStones ?

" I'm delighted," agreed Jimmy." The idea of me being down herewith the Stones while they are re-hearsing is much the same policyas I adopted with Traffic in theseclusion of their country cottage. You get to know and feel the music

The SCAFFOLD being far from serious (I to r) ROGER McGOUGH,JOHN GORMAN and MIKE McGEAR.

Gimmick spoilsSymbols latest

t A Lovely Way To Say Goodnight/Pretty City (President)AFASCINATING vocal blend from the Symbols, whose falsettos andcounter -harmonies make them sound like Britain's answer to the Four

Seasons. They even have the high-pitched soloist weaving in and out of theensemble, just like Frankie Valli.

The tune itself is pleasant, and onewhich you can hum quite easily aftera couple of spins-and 'the steady mid -tempo beat makes it 'equally accept-able for dancing. But I found thegimmick of swirling oscillations bothunnecessary and distracting.

I don't rate this quite as good astheir recent hit, but now they'reestablished it could get a touch.

FLIP : Soloed with chanting sup-port, this has a descriptive lyric thatholds the interest, 'but isn't as tunefulas the top side. Medium -pacer.

PARADE+The Radio Song (A

A wonderfully happy disc with aninfectious bouncy beat, a fairly catchytune, a glowing brassy backing-andmore of those delicious West Coastharmonies, complete with falsettos. It's a compelling, bright and verycommercial disc that's bound toappeal to the Radio 1 d-jsbe-cause it could almost be a signaturetune for the station !

* TIPPED FORCHARTS

t CHART POSSIBLE

PEDDLERSHandel With Care (CBS).

If you're familiar with the beautiful" Largo " by Handel, you'll knowthat it's in much the same categoryas Bach's " Air On The G String "-which helped to provide ?racial Hammwith its first hilt. This has the samesort of treatment-with rich cathed-ral -like organ, but rather more of asnappy rhythm. Roy Phillips' soulfulvocal is aided by spectral voices. I'min two minds about this one-PeteMurray's lyric is fine, and the per-formance is Ispllendid. But I felt the" Largo " seemed singularly out ofPlace with this peppy beat.

SERIOUS SIDE OF THESCAFFOLD

* Do You Remember?/Carry On Krow(Parlophone).

NOT such an obvious novelty as "Thank UVery Much," this displays the more

serious side of the Scaffold's nature. The lyricis nostalgic, almost sentimental-while the

TURTLESfiSound Asleep/Umbassa And The

Dragon (London). The Turtles seem to have fallen

from favour since their initial Britishimpact nearly a year ago. This is anextremely good record, full of con-trasts, overflowing with original ideasbut I can't help thinking it might be ,a bit too complex for the Chart, specially as the constantly changingtempo won't appeal to dancers.

The basic tune and oom-pah martialbeat are catchy, and the boys' har-monies are delightful.

FLIP : As you might expert, thishas a jungle setting. But it's whollydisappointing, as it consists of nothingbut tribal chanting and tropical noises.

SMOKEY ROBINSON+If You Can Want/When The WordsFrom Your Heart Get Caught Up In

Your Throat (Tamla-Motown).Smokey Robinson has a high-pitched

voice almost like a girl's-so that onthis characteristic Tamia disc hesounds not unlike Diana Ross ! All thefrothy bubbling urgency that we'vecome to expect from the label isutilised to the full, and the tambour-ine-'acc'entuated heavy beat is asirresistible as ever.

FLIP : A shuffle -beat rhythmic bal-lad with a never-ending title ! Toe -tapping backing includes brass, chant-ing and what sounds like Rolf Harris'wobble -board !

ENGELBERT turns songwriterto provide the latest release for

PETER GORDENO

ENGEL SONGFOR PETER

Born To Be Wanted (MCA)WRITTEN by Engelbert

Humperdinck (under hisreal name of Dorsey) and pub-lished by Tom Jones, this discarouses immediate interest. It'sa swaying ballad, with lushstrings, heavenly choir and agentle beat.

Peter Gorden() sings intimatelyin hushed tones, occasionallybreaking into a big belt-and whenhe gives his voice full rein, hesounds not unlike Engetbert.

A nice song, and a thoroughlyacceptable performance-but withso many good records of this kindon the market, it will have tostruggle.

BOBBY VEEMaybe 'Just Today (Liberty).

A clean, highly -polished disc witha professional gloss. It's a tenderballad set to an unobtrusive mid -tempo beat. Bobby warbles softly, slipping into dualtrack in the chorus,'and supported by a girl group chant-ing quietly in the background. It hasan appealing tune and an easy-goingrestful quality.

COLORS OF LOVEI'm A Train (Page One).

Huge fun, this. It's in the folk -beat idiom, with a 'novelty tongue -twisting lyric, a chugging railroad'beat and frequent thumps on the bigbass drum. Backing includes dancingstrings and an underlying tinklingsound.

The Colors of Love feature anattractive blend of boy -and -girl voices, and the whole thing has a Countryfeel about it

LONNIE DONEGANToys (Columbia).

Lonnie DOnegan'S first for ttis newlabel, and a song which he helped towrite. And a very pretty song it 'is,too. I love the colourful, slightlyfanciful lyric-and 'the ear -catchingcontrapuntal harmonies.First-class performance by Lonnie.

tune is simply constructed and very quick toregister.

There are several obvious gimmick attractions-suchas the way in which the word " do " is repeated fivetimes on every occasion the title phrase crops up. Thenthere's the cute shuffle -beat sand -dance passage- in themiddle, and the chugging lilt beat that permeates therest of the disc.

Another McGough-McGear composition, it's catchyand entertaining. Doesn't have the immediate impactof the last one, but the group's current popularityshould carry it.

FLIP: A traditional folk song, treated in theScaffold's inimitable style-complete with countrydialects and roundelay chorus. Harpsichord backing.

NASHVILLE TEENStAll Along The Watchtower (Deena).

Can't understand why the NashvilleTeens are :persistently ignored by discbuyers, because they always producegood discs. Still, perhaps the fact thatthis is a Bob Dylan composition willhelp to boost 'them. Mind you, apartfrom the highly individual lyric, itdoesn't sound like Dylan-as thegroup has adapted it 'to 'its ownstyle.

Intense solo vocal, clanking piano,:a busy :string sound 'and a rumblingbeat-these are 'the ingredients, andthe end product is both 'effective andcommendable.

DELFONICSLa -La Means I Love You (Bell).A smash hit in America, this one.

Not sure that I understand why, be-cause 'there's nothing out-of-the-orekn-ary about it. It's a bluesy rocka-ballad, with a heavy plod beat andshimmering strings.

Features the lead singer with" slurp " chanting support, giving itthe feel of a Tamita disc.

RAY CHARLESThat's A Lie (Stateside).

I have yet to come across a RayCharles disc that isn't good value, and 'this is no exception. It's a bluesyrhythmic ballad, with a nagging jerkbeat and a backing of 'brass, pianoand organ.

Ray pours his heart out in: hisd'istinetive ithreaty and beseechingstyle, while the ,Raelets chant " Ohyes, you know that's a lie " in-cessantly.

SUPER SOUL-

EDDIE'S BESTt Big Bird/Holding On With

Both Hands (Stag)

A great disc-I'm inclined to-L-1- say it's the best EddieFloyd has ever made. Producedby Booker T., who also wroteit with Eddie, this is super soul. There's a mean, insidious jerk -beat backing-plus quiveringtwangs, and a vast envelopingbrass -and -strings backing thatsavours of the Motown sound.

Eddie wails imploringly, withspirited chanting to back him up.I must admit there's not a verysubstantial melody, but it's theoverall effect that's so breath-taking.

FLIP : Still sticking to an in-sistent jerk beat, this has a con-siderably lighter approach than thecoupling. There's a rolling pianoand crisp brass.

JERRY LEE LEWISAnother Place, Another Time

(Mercury).Last week, I reviewed three rock

revival discs in the Jerry Lee LewiSstyle, and now we have the masterhimself. But if you're expetting morefuel for the rock fire, you're sadlymistaken.

Because this is country :blues-aplaintive lyric, a lilting rhythm, steelguitars, fiddle and humming group.

It's hummable, with a sing -alongchorus you can join in-rather likean Eddy Arnold disc. Well done-but a rock number would have Servedhim better.

JIMMY YOUNG

Jimmy wooshousewives

* Silver And Blue/My Dream OfLove (MGM)

JIMMY YOUNG is the house-wives' favourite on Radio 1,

and this disc is aimed at them. It'ssquare and corny, dripping schmaltzand oozing sentimentality-and italso happens to be blatantly andinstantly commercial.

A Les Reed -Barry Mason number,it's set to a lilting waltz rhythm, andhas a sing -along chorus that's so easyto pick up you'll be joining in thevery first time you hear it. Verymuch in the Humperdinck " LastWaltz " bracket.

Obviously this will get enormous air-time coverage, and it looks a prettysafe bet.

FLIP : Another track that can't gowrong, because it's based on the ever -popular " Liebestraume," and set toa Kaempfert-like plucking rhythm.

-* Recommended *SUNSHINE COMPANY : " Look, Here Comes The " (Liberty). A haunt-ing 'tune, opening poignantly and gently swelling 'into an expansive chorus.Rich In West Coast harmonies, it's beautifully scored with mellow strings, oboe, acoustic guitars and tambourine.BLADES OF GRASS : " Charlie And' Fred " ((Stateside). Written by HolliesClark and Nash, this is a jaunty gallop -pace number. It tells of Charlie therag -man and his horse. A fascinating, enjoyable record.DAVID AND MARIANNE DALMOUR : " Little Flower " '(Columbia).Remember the Chris Barber smash hit " Petite Fleur " ? Well, this is avocal version. The duo 'treats the romantic lyric tenderly, and Sidney Bechet'smemorable tune tie' as appealing as ever.SAM, ERV AND TOM : " Soul Teacher " (Direction). An incredible r -and -bitem, showcasing a raving vocal exchange between the three coloured boys,-plus a sizzling beat and the most unusual string sound 'ever heard on a souldisc.WE UGLY DOGS : " First Spring Rain " (B.T. Puppy), Do try and catchthis one ! More of those gorgeous West Coast harmonies, coupled with animaginative lyric and melodic tune.

BACKING BRITAIN! AND BACKING AMERICA!TREMS in S.A.The 'I'REMELOES' arrival in

Argentine brought thousands of fansto the airport (see right) and forthe next 18 days (I to r) ALANBLAKELY, CHIP HAWKES, RICKWEST and DAVE MUNDEN wereguarded against hysterical fans.

They played 14 shows in Argentineand six in Uruguay to more than500,000 spectators (biggest crowd35,000 and one night at fourstadiums to a total of 80,000). Witha one -hour TV show and three half-hour shows on their own, it addedup to a, lot of foreign currencyearned for Britain.

Reason for their popularity:they've had three No. 1 single hitsand have No. 1 and No. 2 incurrent LP charts in the Argentine. They new back to Britain on Wed-nesday, but will return to SouthAmerica before the year is out.

WHO in FRISCOAFTER our last visit to San

Francisco, just before theMonterey Pop Festival last year inthe summer, we were all left withan impression of really good socialrelations between the town's straightand not -so -straight residents.

They had the friendliest policeforce, the country's best pop promoter--Bill Graham-aware audiences, goodgroups, Haight Ashbury, Chinatown, and lots of other things to combineto give San Francisco a great atmo-sphere. We felt at ease and happythere.

Today things are different. At theairport we were approached by severalyoung people-not hippies and notfans. They were asking for " sparechange " and looked as if theyneeded some. Unfortunately we werecompletely broke and just had to tellthem to go away. I tried to explainto one guy why we didn't carry anymoney, but it seemed he didn't reallycare. He certainly wasn't well enoughto open his eyes wide enough to knowwe were who we were.

In Haight Ashbury now this is acommon occurrenoe. Lots of kidslive solely by behging for many, times are hard. If the summer'sdrop -outs want to drop back in theymust drop in via Vietnam.

The Fillmore Auditorium, however, and its big sister, Winterland, arevery much the same. The audiencesseem younger, but then the last timewe played was the Hippy summer, with hippies of all ages coming fromall over the States to SF.

The audience there is alwaysfriendly and the sound is the bestin the world for rock 'n' roll. BillGraham, the man who runs both

venues, has Installed over $35,000worth of microphone system. It'sfantastic, and it couldn't happen inBritain. Nobody could make thatmuch as easily as he can. He's a

Exclusive from

PETE TOWNSHEND

brilliant man and works hard to makesure the shows he puts on are thebest in the States.

Despite the general decline in atmo-sphere, SF is still the centre for theStates' hippies. There are rumoursthat many will spend this summer inVancouver, Canada. We hear thatVancouver isn't too pleased at thethought. Although Flower Powerwasn't condemned quite as smartlyas it was in England, it's dead now.

If there's anything the Americanman in the street hates, it's happi-ness that isn't paid for, or earned.Pop music in this area is as good

as ever. We realise that most of theEnglish record buyers haven't cottonedon to West Coast groups yet, but wethink they soon will. Country Joeand the Fish are easily the least con-trived group from the U.S.A., andthere are countless numbers of equallyrefreshing groups with guitar frontlines that could break in England. The Buffalo Springfield, the MobyGrape, the Association are all capableof consistently good records andpersonal appearances.

Jinni Hendrix, the Cream, the Bee

Gees, Traffic, the Nice, John Mayall(and ourselves) have all played suc-cessful shows on the West Coast.

On most of our shows in SF weplayed alongside Cannonball Adderleyand his band. He was well receivedby the rock -hungry audience and soencouraged, played brilliant sets. Hispianist, Jose Zawinul was fantastic, playing the kind of music whichcomes from somewhere inside, possiblefor anyone to like. Despite their talentfor r -and -b, I don't think it couldhappen outside of a discotheque inEngland, but who knows until it'stried ?

In England our music came first. Here our music comes second, similarto the way the Move made it inEngland as guitar smashers !

Our albums are well liked here, though, and our singles sell weLl now.I'll be happy to see the day whensome of the energy that goes into aWho " finale " goes into somethinguseful like quarrying or demolition !

Am I a criminal ? 1 wentaboard Mi Amigo (above) inAmsterdam dock at Captain'sinvitation. My second visit to theRadio Caroline ship, which rockeda bit off Frinton on my first triptwo years ago. Now all is still-the sea and the sound.

Abdul Fakir, of Four Tops, still hopes to visit property heinherited from his father in EastPakistan.

New discotheque called BirdClu'b had noted " till 5 am " scat -jam session, with Four Tops andNancy Wilson singing and JimmySmith leading " backing " group.

Just like Birdland in old days,"they said.

British disc company bossesLeslie Gould (Philips) and RolandRennie (Polydor) much inevidence.

Famous manager Arnie Miss(with goatee beard) looking afterVikki Carr like a 1)utch uncle.

Agent Tito (and wife Terry)Burns spreading much charmaround the scene. ANDY GRAY.

Four Tops, Vikki, Nancy great

but no Dusty at GalaBRITISH pop prestige, which the Beatles era boosted to peak

popularity, took another knock in Europe last week. Followingthe shambles of the British gala night at Cannes in January camethe blow of Dusty Springfield, only British performer in the annualDutch Grand Gala du Disque, not appearing !

The trouble is alleged to havebeen rehearsal facilities. By ANDY GRAY

Dusty spent almost three days inher Amsterdam Hilton hotel rooanwhere I tried to contact tier(I was staying five floors below) tohear her side of the story. I talkedwith her manager, Vic Billings, whosaid he'd try to arrange a meeting.Nothing happened.

Piet Beishuizen, the organiser of theGrand Gala, which went out on TVin colour and black -and -white to awide area, told me : " Dusty is awonderful artist, but she made impos-sible rehearsal demands and hermanager was insulting to everyone.I had no option but to ask themto leave."

No complaintsI asked other stars in the Grand

Gala if they thought rehearsal andorchestral facilities were inadequate.Nancy Wilson said : " The orchestradoesn't thrill me. but it isn't my type.I realise that in an all-star show, Likethis one, you must not expect the sametreatment as in a show in which youare the only star. I have no com-plaints."

Vikki Carr said she liked theorchestra, and the Four Tops toldme everything was " Just great."In the actual Gala on Friday night,

all three gave wonderful perform-ances, proving themselves a cut abovethe others, who were all very good.

Nancy sang six songs, including theBeatles' " Can't Buy Me Love,- anovel " Strike Up The Band," andan amusing " I'm Always Drunk InSan Francisco." Donn Trenner MD-edexpertly for her and diminutive AndyThomas batoneered well for VikkiCarr, who powered her way through" It Must Be Him," " I Love YouBaby " and other songs, inductingher latest record, " She'll Be There."

The Tops closed the show indynamic fashion. After " Reach OutI'll Be There " and " Walk Away "and others, they wound up with atorrid " Mack The Knife," withLawrence Payton taking the leadinstead of Levi Stubbs.

Sponsored by the record trade ofHolland and put on in the giant RAIexhibition building with makeshiftballrooms around the theatre for aswing party after the performance, other successes were Jimmy Smith, on

his sizzling organ ; Esther and AbiOfarim (representing Germany) :

suave singer Udo Jergens fromAustria ; plaintive warbler SandyPosey and Dutch folk singers RamsesShaffy and Boudewijn de Groot.Biggest novelties were Red IndianBuffy Sainte -Marie, from Saskatche-wan, Canada, playing fascinatingmusic on an archery bow, andManitas de Plata making his guitarsound as if six guitarists wereperforming !

No hitchesThe whole show went off without

a hitch, and if there was too muchtalking in Dutch for me, there wasn'tfor the Dutch audiences, who laugheda great deal at the comperes.

During the evening Peter Brownreceived one of the many Edisonsstatuette awards for the Beatles'" Revolver " LP The Beach Boys'" Pet Sounds," Donovan's " MellowYellow " and Four Tops' " Live "also won awards.Once again I enjoyed Holland's

biggest recording social night of theyear, and thank my hosts, the orga-nisers and publisher -impresario PaulAcket for inviting me. And onceagain I ask : When is the Britishrecording industry going to have asimilar event in London ?

It should be explained that thePillars Of Hercules is a pubsituated close to the CharingCross Road where Tom used todrink with " all the young DylanThomases " eight years ago.

Tom, it transpired, is seriouslyconsidering producing a number ofdocumentaries on such subjects asrock 'n' roll, the Mississippi Delta, the Cajun area of America, and anisland off the American coast.

" I'm doing it with Luke Kelly, who is a Dubliner with a small ' din the film department of the RoyalCollege of Art," Tom explained." I'm trying to get some money tomake three different films. Theywill be documentaries linked withmusic, which is where I come in.

Then there is the Cajun areaof America which, Tom says, is asmall area down South whereFrench is the language spoken andthe music is a mixture of Frenchand American.

" There are all sorts of pianoaccordions playing the blues," hepointed out, sinking the last of hisfirst brandy. " I became interestedin Cajun music via the blues. Itis interesting as a community whichhas been left on its own. Theystill broadcast the music locally."

The other American communityto interest Tom is on a small islandwhere " the people are almost pureAfrican." It seems that they havebeen separated from the mainlandever since the slaves arrived andhave never become affected by an-other nationality.

Back towards home, Tom is in-trigued by a series of folk festi-vals which are held throughoutthe summer in Ireland. They havea name which he has difficulty inpronouncing and which he can-not spell at all..

" You get a town which holdstwo thousand people and fortythousand descend on it with theirviolins and for a week everyoneis drunk," he grinned, savouringthe thought of filming such a scene.

" Huge great traffic jams build upand there are great Irishmen run-ning down the street to Ft in. Youfind great virtuoso musicians."

Tam's last remark reminded me ofsomething Manfred said when we meta few months ago, that the grouphad gone through a bad period before" Mighty Quinn," but were feelingmuch better as a result of the reviewsit had received.

" After so long, there was a larkof purpose within the group. Therewas no creativity, we didn't knowwhere we were going," Tom agreed.

If ' Mighty Quinn ' hadn't been ahit, we would probably have brokenup." If it hadn't been a hit, I thought

It was a bit of a sinking ship. Thisis only my opinion, but I felt thatthings were drifting apart.

This week was the third weekof filming their feature film, still called " Untitled." Duringmy two days in Palm Springs I

found out that in the film you'llsee Micky, Davy, Peter andMike romp through 100 minutesof sight gags, 11 songs and 20totally different plots.

Other bits of information I

gathered beside the pool were :Phyllis Nesmith had her firsthOliday since the birth ofJonathan Darby when she spentthe week -end in Palm Springswith Mike ...Each Monkeewill 'have 11 different costumesin the film ...

Davy fights Sonny Liston andgets badly beaten in a prize fightfor the film and as a resultDavy's formed a personalfriendship with Sonny and flewto Reno, Nevada to see himfight...

Mike has sold the master ofhis solo album to MGM -VerveRecords and it will be releasedin three months ... Davy andseveral friends took a four-wheel jeep and drove over thesand dunes in the desert . . .

they also p'.ayed water polotennis, soccer and cards to passthe time ...

Micky flew in a life-size gliderin the desert ... and SamanthaJuste is looking for the rightlocation to open a boutique inHollywood.

Ike and Tina Turner : I have agreat admiration for Phil Spectoras a record producer. It's a uniquesound he has achieved on this disc.Although it reached a high positionhere it did absolutely nothing in theStates.

TOYLAND by Alan Bown : They madesome pretty ordinary stuff to beginwith but this is a completely dif-ferent sound . . . a very prettyrecord.

AT BASIN STREET EAST LP, byDella Reese : Recorded live-it hasa fantastic atmosphere even thoughshe recorded it with the residenthouse band. An electric performance

STRANGER ON THE SHORE, byAcker Bilk : It still has the record

'for the longest run in the chartsand it's still selling. Acker Bilk isone of the all-time greats for me.

MARIA by P. J. Proby : I'm a greatfan of Proby. He Is so talented andcan handle any type of material. This was the first song that madepeople listen to him seriously.

IT'S NOT UNUSUAL by Tom Jones :This is the greatest single Tom Jonesever recorded ; I only wish LesReed and Gordon Mills could findanother like it.

I ONLY WANT TO BE WITH YOUby Dusty Springfield : I chose thisone from all of Dusty's marvellousrecordings because it was the onlyone to reach No. 1 over here.

SERENATA by Sarah Vaughan : Anumber of people have recordedthis but Miss Vaughan's is still themost successful. I'm very pro -coloured singers as I am Irishactors-they are so uninhibited intheir performances.

MR. TAMBOURINE MAN by TheByrds : I first played this on RadioCity when I was out there withMark Roman. It was a terribleshambles-very primitive. This wastheir only big hit in Britain andeven Dylan has said it is hisfavourite recording.

YOU'VE GOT YOUR TROUBLES bythe Fortunes: Their first big hit andit has become a standard. Nearlyall the top American singers have re-corded it. To date I think there are53 versions. A great credit to Davidand Jonathan.

The point is that Neil Smith doesn'teven like them. Did he save hismoney to buy their records as soonas they Were released? Did hespend all his time writing" pleases " to the Home Secretary, begging him to let Colin and Vincestay in Britain?

If he didn't why is he being allowedto see them when loyal fans willingttiai pay for tickets have to missthem because their local theatreisn't included in the tour list orthe nearest one Is already fullybooked?

Filled with original and interestingideas, played with charm and enthusiasm this song reveals thesplendid talent of Alan Price. Heis certainly one of the finest musi-cians to emerge from the Britishpop scene and deserves full 'recog-nition as such.

CHRISTINE SNELLING (London):As a regular reader of NME Icannot fail to notice the absenceof a comprehensive review of themusic played in pubs up and downthe country.

An enormous number of people aremissing a groat deal of excellentfree entertainment. The music isequal and in many cases superiorto that obtainable in the betterknown clubs where one has to payan entrance fee and then exhorbi-tam prices for drinks.

The only obvious sign of successwith Dons that he now smokesfar more cigarettes than he usedto.

says DON (I like to shockpeople) PARTRIDGEHe noticed one other sign when

we visited his local bank. Insteadof checking whether his accountwas in order they promptly cashedhis cheque with the enquiry : " Isit No. 1 ? "

"No," answered Don, "but it'sin the Top Ten and `Wiv' A LittleBit Of Luck' . . ." and he startedsinging the "My Fair Lady" song.I noticed in his brief case he had acopy of Tommy Steele's "TheHappiest Millionaire."

I asked Don what his ownreaction was ;to other people whoperformed as buskers in the street.

"I usually give them something,"said Don. "If a beggar comes upto me and asks for a handout Iask them to entertain for twominutes for 'half-a-crown or askthem to say something interesting. If they can give me somethingthen [they're entitled to the money."

Don likesPeople who do entertain Don

(not in the street!) include TonyHancock, who makes him laugh, and Mick Jagger, whom he watcheswhenever he appears to "see what'he does with his hands!" He alsoenjoys the Beachcomber humourcolumn.

At present Don is much con-cerned with what he will recordas a follow-up and is fairly surethat he will drop the one -man -band backing. One number he would like to

record is "The First Girl I Loved,"written by the Incredible StringBand.

Before leaving, Don gave mea copy of a book of poems that hewrote in collaboration with streetsinger Alan Young. They 'had thebook published at their ownexpense for £40 and got back £140

selling it (themselves. They areplanning to publish an omnibusedition of their work shortly, adding new material. Here withkind permission of D.P, is one ofhis poems:

" It saves a lot of time andmisunderstanding in the recordingstudio later."[Meanwhile Mick was burring'

Perhaps Charlie would like to saya few words ? "Go on then, off -crudthe usually silent drummer, " butwhatever you ask me, I bet I can'tanswer it ?',

With all the other Stones attemp-ting film scores and independentrecord production, was Charlie do-ing ayhing onan his own ?

I knew it ! That's beautiful. Iknew I wouldn't be able to answerit. No-of course not-you must bejoking. I couldn't produce arecord."

Jagger by this time has almostcollapsed double with suppressedmirth and thinks I ought to mentionhow he is going to India shortly torecord the High Commissionaire.

Might there be a film soon withMick and Marianne Faithfull star-ring together ?

" It's possible but then it's nogood me shooting my mouth offway before anything is likely tohappen. It just looks silly if thingsbreak down. You may have noticedthe Rolling Stones film " said Mick.

" Coining shortly," interposedKeith.

And so ended another good cleanfight. This was their contest on amajority decision. I must get backinto training again perhaps an inter-view with Them might help.

H. M. BENFIELD (Ash Vale, Sur-rey): John Bowles is a new singerwho, if properly managed and givengood material, could become a verygood performer.

He has a beautiful voice, presents asong well and unlike many, thisNew Zealand singer is not a carboncopy of a British artist. I hope hisrecord " If I Only Had Time "makes the charts and that we seea lot more of him.

A. JONES (Ebbw Vale, South Wales):Every time I see Esther and AbiOf ariM I am reminded of Sonny andCher.

They have not had a chart successsince " Little Man " although theyhave released many fine records.Their new one " Good Combina-tions " is their best for a long timeand should make the charts.

Perhaps the success of " CinderellaRockefella " marks a new interestin boy girl duos and Sonny andCher could very well regain theirold popularity.

MOVE DEBUT LP BEST OF ITS KINDTHE MOVE are one of the

best out and out commercialgroups around and full credit tothem for not claiming to be any-thing more than that. Their longawaited first LP, to be releasednext Friday by Regal Zono-phone, is purely and simplycommercial pop and is probablyone of the best albums of itskind.

Its strong point is in its variety-" Every track is different fromthe next," says Carl Wayne.

Production by Denny Cordell isexcellent all the way through, andRoy Wood takes songwriting creditsor all the tracks other than thethree rock numbers.

By NICK LOGANSIDE ONE opens with " Yellow

Rainbow " and a rock intro givesway to a soft vocal from Ace Kefford. The others in the group fuse togetherfor the chorus and there is plenty. oftypical Move guitar work and somegood drumming from Bev Bevan.

" Kilroy Was Here " is slower andRoy and Trevor handle the somewhathumorous lyrics.

The next track for me ,is themost commercial due to its catchiness-I can't get the tune out of mymind. " Here We Go Round TheLemon Tree " is the title and Roysings it. Violins come in too and thewhole is very good production. Wouldhave made a good single.

The Move on the old Eddie Cochran

rocker " Weekend " are a real knockout. Trev drains every possible ounceof excitement from it and theirs mustrank as one of the best Versionsmade.

" Walk Upon The Water " featuresRoy, Carl and Trey taking differentparts of the vocal, Bev excelling ondrums and a weird Beatlish fade out." Flowers In The Rain," the group'sfirst big hit, sounds even better withthe passing of time.

And it's rave up time again for thefinal track on side one, " HeyGrandma," a Moby Grape special.Carl, Trev and Roy sing it, rockguitar and Jerry Lee Lewis piano arein there somewhere and there's apiece of very 1968 guitar thrown in asa contrast. Here the excitement isintense and the musicianship of thewhole group really shines.

SIDE TWO opens with " UselessInformation," Carl and Roy sharingvocals. Not a particularly outstand-ing Wood composition-but the nexttrack is a real humdinger.

Featuring the croaky ClarenceFrogman Henry voice of drummerBev Bevan and the softer highervoice of Ace, this version of the oldCoasters' rock hit " Zing " reallymust be heard to be believed.

There's no attempt to bring thisone up to date and the end productemerges as a nostalgic novelty piece.

" The Girl Outside " has Trevorsurrounded by lots of strings and isa sad contemplative composition, veryun-Move like but nice. " FireBrigade" you all should know and thenext, " Mist On A Monday Morning,"is in similar vein to " Girl Outside."

Roy sings his own composition withgreat feeling ; there's lots oforchestral happenings as well and thewhole has something of a " She'sLeaving Home " sadness about it.

Final track Is " Cherry BlossomClinic," which was to have beenreleased as a single at one time. Itshould have been. Trey and Roysing it and it comes over as a crossbetween their last two hits.

Overall sound and excitement onthis LP is paramount. It was madeto be played at high volume andshould go into your collection alongwith your Tarola. Motown LPs as analbum for parties and dancing.
