Tis the season to look out for neigh-bors who may need extra care duringthe holidays and cold winter months. This means not only helping seniorsand other neighbors with things like

    snow-shov-

    eling, butalso beinga t t e n t i v eto peoplese m o t i o n a lneeds dur-ing this sea-son of highe x p e c t a -tions.

A reportin the DenverPost recentlystated that

the cost to the state of people living innursing homes has risen to over $1 bil-lion and that many of the people who

live in nursing homes could be caredfor more inexpensively in their ownhomes.

Helping people age in community isone of the goals of Denvers Age MattersInitiative, which was led by now-Sena-tor Luca Guzman and recently issuedits final report. As a member of theSteering Committee, I am working withLuca and other stakeholders to imple-ment the plan.

Mayor Hickenlooper recently askedall city departments to designate anaging liaison, someone who will makesure that the activities of their par-ticular department consider the needsand contributions of seniors. Examples

include Waste Management keepingseniors in mind when they select mech-anisms for trash and recycling andParks and Recreation including senior

services at all recreation centers.Seniors also need social activities

and, if they have caregivers, thoseindividuals may need a break. This is arole that the Seniors Resource Center, located at W. 32nd Ave. and Chase St.,

plays. Each day, dozens of seniors visitthe center for recreation and socialactivities. The Center is now in themiddle of a capital campaign to build anew building, and would welcome con-tributions. Please call 303-238-8151 tohelp out.

Another effort by the city to helppeople age in community is called Bethe Denver Difference. This is a pro-motional campaign that encouragesresidents to check in on their neighborsoccasionally, and especially during the winter, to see if they need anything.Residents are also encouraged to shov-el snow for their neighbors.

    I was delivering Thanksgiving meals

to people recently when a woman atone of the homes I visited said that shelived alone and seemed rather sad. Ithought that perhaps this was a recentphenomenon. A little known fact is thatmany people live alone and sometimeslack the social support during the holi-days that they might wish or need.

Of Denver households, 39% areoccupied by individuals living alone. This is true for 24% of seniors. Thenumber of people living alone has risensignificantly in the past 60 years, aver-aging only 9% nationwide in 1950.

So this winter, check in with yourneighbors. Whether its just a friendlyhello or an offer to give them a hand,

youll find that a little bit of kindnesscan go a long ways, particularly duringthis economy and this time of year.

Denver B-cycle, the nation's firstlarge-scale citywide bicycle sharingsystem, closed out its inaugural yearthis week on Monday, December 6.With Kaiser Permanente as pre-senting sponsor, Denver B-cyclesucceeded in offering Denver resi-dents and visitors a viable trans-portation option that increasedtheir daily activity, saved moneyand reduced unhealthy air toxicsand carbon emissions. Launchedon April 22, 2010, Denver B-cyclereached 102,981 rides by midnighton December 5, after less thanseven months of operation. DenverB-cycle is going into winter hiberna-tion in order to take time for a thor-ough first season review, to makeoperational adjustments, completesystematic bike fleet maintenance, and to make system IT enhance-ments. Denver B-cycle also hadconcerns about winter operationsincluding safety, accelerated bike

wear and tear, and low usage/membership revenues. During thecoming winter, Denver B-cycle willexamine more closely the feasibil-ity of staying open for future winterseasons. The system will reopenin March 2011. "As the first large-scale citywide public bike sharingprogram in the country, we werebreaking new ground and learning

lessons from start to finish," saidParry Burnap, executive director ofDenver Bike Sharing, the Coloradonon-profit that owns and operatesDenver B-cycle. "We are thrilled withthe fact that we achieved almost103,000 trips and even more excitedabout the environmental, economic, public health and community build-ing benefits. This program is a tes-timony to the fact that Denver is aninnovative community that works

well across sectors. We could nothave done it without City leader-ship, our funders, sponsors, vol-unteers and last but not least, ourriders!"

by Don BainMaybe it was the commuters

and entry-level vehicles wed beendriving, but as soon as we saw theseductive shape of the fire enginered 2010 Altima Coupe we knew we

were in for a treat. It was quick and responsive, even

though this model was powered bythe smaller of the available engines

    a 2.5-liter, 16-valve four-cylinderp u l l e dalong by175 hors-es andp r o d u c -ing 180lb-ft. oftorque.

Thats enough to put this sharp-looking little coupe through itspaces like a top drum and buglecorps performance crisp accelera-

tion and snappy turns with a flour-ish of style.

Red cars dont actually go anyfaster, but for some reason theyseem to.

Why the Altima is so much funto drive is simple little things likepower rack and pinion steering, independent strut suspension upfront with multilink in back, sta-bilizers fore and aft, not to mentionpower disc brakes all around andvented in the front.

Snug, comfortable front bucketseats keep you securely in thedrivers seat as you tackle slither-ing curves with the confidence of a

mongoose stalking a cobra. The interior nicely compliment-

ed the exterior with attractive ifinexpensive black seat covers anddash. Easily readable red and whitegauges add to the inner ambienceat night.

The exterior appearance isenhanced by styling borrowed fromNissans Z-cars and 17-inch alloy

wheels. UV reducing solar glasswill help to maintain the integrity ofthe interior for a longer time, espe-cially if you often park in the sun.

This 4-cylinder model gets animpressive combined mileage rat-ing of 27-mpg while still delivering

a level of performance that makesthe coupe fun to drive thats a bigplus in our book.

Not only that, its emission lev-els are relatively low, earning thevehicle thus equipped the EPAsSmartWay designation.

In crash tests it gets 4 stars forfrontal impacts, but five stars for

side impacts AND rollovers thelatter is very rare.

The 2010 Altima Coupe has abase price of $22,440. The one wetested had a convenience packagethat added an 8-way power adjust-

able drivers seat with manual lum-bar support, auto dimming head-lamps, leather wrapped steering

wheel with audio controls and apower passenger side window. Soconfigured and delivered, with floorand trunk mats, the total came to$24,406 thats a lot of sporty, funto drive coupe for the money.

Our only caution concerns thelow ground clearance of the AltimaCoupes skirting it means youhave to avoid parking blocks andangle through intersection dipsvery slowly among other specialattention required. Dont even think

An effort to recall School Boardmember Andrea Merida and silenceone of Denver's most vocal sup-prrters of neighborhood schools. Jose Silva, the organizer of therecall, had previously had to sub-mit recall paperwork to the Cityand County of Denver three times, before it was accepted, being reject-ed variously for typographic errosand other problems.

Silva submitted not a singlesignature to the Denver Elections

Division. In published reports, heclaimed he had gathered some3700 signatures. Yet Silva hadnever filed required disclosuresfor a campaign committee or other

financial reports.Silva had previously racked up

over $50,000 in campaign financefines for failing to comply with elec-tion laws in other campaigns.

Silva, who had previously hasties with the Piton foundation,a group that supports charterschools and has funded the contro-versial group, Stand for Children,is largely seen as a proxy for out-side groups that sought to attackMerida because of her efforts to

detail financial losses faced byDenver Public Schools after a exot-ic finance deal went wrong.

Dear Steve,It took you a whole week the

subtle layerings of blue, purple, maybe black; the final coat oflacquer. The texture and color

variations were that of the fin-est Spanish leather. Struck withafternoon sunlight it glowed. Thatpurple wall had to be the pinnacleof your career.

Everyone loved my eggplant-colored wall. When I told peopleit was going away, some said theywouldnt visit anymore.

Yes, Steve, I have to tell you thepurple wall is gone.

How did this happen to some-thing I loved so much?

Well, I fell in love with a gold/red/green sheer at the fabric store.I dont like curtains, didnt wantcurtains, but there it was love.

I brought home a swatch, heldit up. Yes, it went with my belovedaborigine wall. Not so much withthe yellow on the other walls, norwith the furniture. Well, I was over

the yellow. What could I replaceit with? I hemmed andhawed, consulted friends.

Melanie said the purplehad to go. Too dark, wrong

wall. Shawn said, with asweep of his arms, orangeceiling, green walls, highgloss white trim.

So be it. It had been eleven years, I reasoned. Maybe it wastime for a change.

Then the scope creep began. IfI were going to paint, shouldnt Irefinish the floors first? And if I were going to refinish the floors, shouldnt I strip the banister?

It had been decades since Idstripped anything, so shouldntI practice on the window trim, which would clean up a century ofpaint and bring out the detail?

When the trim was stripped,I realized how beautiful it was,and wanted to keep it natural, which required a better job thanId planned.

While doing that, why notrebuild the front window, which was showing itsage?

    While prepping to

paint, why not run thespeaker wires throughthe wall instead of lettingthem snake all over the

    place?Speaking of paint, didnt the

foyer need it, too? I loved thosedove-grey walls, but theyd beendamaged in the stripping, andanyway the mint trim was out-dated.

If youre painting the walls, then the stairs need to be done, too. Frankly, Steve, they were theonly things in the house that actu-ally needed paint, and they endedup as an afterthought.

And what about back porchtouchup, since, somewhere inthere, it had become the diningroom?

Dining rooms require differentlighting, so there were new fix-tures there, and one for the livingroom.

It turned out the banister need-ed serious sanding and staining.

I had thought that banisterwas the last piece of the originalrenovation begun sixteen yearsago. Suddenly I noticed everyunfinished detail - door handles, escutcheon for the front doorknob, painting the furnace grates, win-dow hardware.

Oh! How about a shelf upstairsin the office? And one in the foyer. And lets repaint the shoe rack, and turn that little cabinet intoa beautiful buffet, and repurposethose stools into even more beau-tiful end tables. And dont forgetnew living room furniture.

As I said, scope creep.I love the way the glowing oak

handrail stands outagainst the orange wall at the top of thestairs, the peaceful grey-green ofthe living room walls, my new

window seat, and my pumpkinceiling. Shawn was spot on.

Heres the irony, though. Whenall is said and done, I cant affordto have the curtains made.

    research-based classes.

By Jason AldermanIf your preteen child hasn't hit

you up yet for a cell phone, you'reamong a rare breed indeed. Studieshave found that roughly 70 percent

of 11- to 14-year-olds now usecell phones. Closer to home, our10-year-old has been hounding mywife and me for months to get hisown phone.

My initial reaction was, "noway." But upon investigation, I seewhy many parents eventually givein. Here are a few pros and cons forgiving your preteen a phone, andsome safeguards you can take:

Safety. Anyone who's ever hada flat tire or gotten lost can attestto cell phones' safety advantages. On the flip side, unless you install

parental controls, your child couldaccess inappropriate content or bemore vulnerable to bullying andpredatory behavior.

    Expense. Cell phone use, includ-

ing calls, text messaging, webbrowsing and application down-loads, can be wildly expensive. Youhave two payment options:

Prepaid plan buy minutes"pay-as-you-go." Plans vary widelyin terms of fees and per-minutecalling and text rates. Advantages:No locked-in service contract; knowexactly how many minutes they'reusing. Disadvantages: Parental con-trols usually don't apply; phonesmore expensive than under a ser-vice contract plan.

    Family plan sometimes it's

Are your kids ready for a

    cell phone?

cheaper to add a phone to your exist-ing plan. Some plans allow unlim-ited calls/texts between friends andfamily or those using the same car-rier. Advantages: Generally cheaperif your kids make lots of calls/texts; most allow parental controls.Disadvantages: Parental controlsmay cost extra; some plans don't

allow usage caps, so undisciplinedkids may rack up large bills; tied toservice contract.

Parental controls. One of thebest ways to protect your kids is tosubscribe to your carrier's parentalcontrols plan. Plan features vary widely, but look for these whencomparison shopping:

Cost (free to $4.99 a month).Ability to cap phone minutes and

text messages.Allow emergency calls, even if

over monthly usage allowance.Cap and/or block entertainment

    downloads (costly/inappropriateringtones, music, video, etc.)

    Block mature content websitesfrom Internet-enabled phones.Restrict time-of-day usage (e.g.,

block during school hours or afterbedtime).

Block calls/texts from specific orunknown numbers (helps preventstalking, bullying and inappropriatecontact).

Track your child's physical loca-tion (requires GPS-enabled phoneand typically costs $5 to $10 amonth).

Parental control programs gen-erally are not available with prepaidplans. And, since no filtering tool iscompletely foolproof, it's important

to regularly discuss safety issues with your kids. Make sure they'recomfortable coming to you with any

questions or details of inappropri-ate contact they've received.

Not every child is ready for cellphone responsibilities. Set groundrules and be prepared to withholdprivileges if they cross boundaries, such as not abiding school regula-tions, exceeding curfews or usage

limits, using to bully others, repeat-edly losing or damaging the phone, etc. And make sure they kick inpart of their allowance to help pay.

With my son, it's not a questionof "if" but instead of "when." And when the time is right, he'll bearthe costs of the handset and add-ing a line to our family plan. This ofcourse will allow him to hound meremotely for the latest must-haveitem.produced as few as four num-ber words during the entire periodthey were studied, while others pro-duced as many as 257.

"This amount of variation wouldamount to a range of approximately28 to 1,799 number-related wordsin a week," said Levine.

Those differences were shownto have a big impact at the endof the study, when the children were asked to connect the wordsfor numbers with sets of squarespresented on sheets of paper. Forexample, those children who hearda lot of number talk were more likelyto respond correctly when shown aset of five squares and four squaresand asked to "point to five."
