Snow Days from coverwant to spend a portion of the day playing out in the snow. After all of that physical activity, they’re bound to be famished. Spread a blan-ket out on the living room fl oor and enjoy a picnic of sandwiches, snacks and hot choco-late. Kids will enjoy the novelty of eating this way.

• Get cooking. Another way to fi ll the day is to have children participate in making meals. A snowy day is a great time to prepare meals for the rest of the week, as well as tinker with hearty, belly-fi lling recipes. Older children can help with cutting vegetables and meats, while younger kids can add seasonings to pots and mix ingredients. Involve the kids in choosing which meals to cook. Baking bread is another fun activity and enables kids to sculpt dough and then eat the fruits of their labors.

• Go the movies. If roads are passable, con-sider a trip to the movie theater, where you can enjoy a matinee. Bring a few friends along and make it a fun-fi lled outing.

• Create snow art. Fill squeeze or squirt bot-tles with some water and food coloring. Allow kids to go out in the yard and create some pic-tures with the snow as their canvas.

• Catch up on cleaning. Cleaning may not be the most exciting snow day activity, but it

might be the most productive. Children can spend time sorting through toys and belong-ings in their rooms.

• Take a nature walk. Grab those boots and insulated pants and head outdoors. A walk in the brisk, cold air can boost spirits and intro-duce kids to the beauty of winter landscapes. Take the camera along and encourage kids to snap pictures of their favorite vistas. ■

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20Aries, expect to be called into action several times this week. You may prefer to avoid the spotlight, but that won’t be the case this week. Make the most of this opportunity.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21Taurus, all of a sudden you are so busy it can be di cult to nd a few moments to rest. Thankfully, you are able to keep up with all of the activity.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21Gemini, seek advice from a trusted con dante as you contemplate a major lifestyle change. This person will provide valuable insight as you look to make the best decision possible.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22Cancer, going solo on a project may not seem like the ideal situation. But you don’t want to be distracted this week, so going it alone is the best way to tackle the tasks at hand.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23Leo, following your gut may not always work out, but this week everything works out for the best. Curb impulsiveness as much as you can, though.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22Virgo, although you might be dreaming of a lavish vacation and an escape from the daily grind, it’s just not possible at this time. Start saving for this dream excursion.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23Libra, although it’s noble to o er assistance to everyone you meet, you may be struggling to take care of yourself in the process. You must put your needs rst.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22A desire to detach from others and be entirely self-su cient can have some challenges, Scorpio. You don’t need to give up independence to have the support of others.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21Sagittarius, your energy levels are high and there is nothing you can’t accomplish this week. Avoid extra ca eine because you’re already buzzing.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20Find a balance between caution and carelessness, Capricorn. You cannot control every situation, and this week you may have something unexpected come your way.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18Aquarius, if you’re on the lookout for new work opportunities, look no further than your own supervisor for guidance. He or she may be your biggest ally.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20You have boundless creativity, Pisces, and this week you get to channel it into a special project. Don’t overextend yourself until everything gets done.

Prevent Winter Damage!

Travel is a signifi cant and often ex-pensive part of the holiday season for many men and women. Whether you’re hitting the open road or taking

to the friendly skies to visit loved ones, this year there are various ways you can cut the costs of holiday travel.

• Book a budget-friendly rental. Th e holiday season is a busy time of year for rental car agencies, and holiday travelers who are late to reserve their vehicles may fi nd themselves driving gas guzzlers for the duration of their trip. When booking your automobile rental this holiday season, do your best to reserver a car early so you have access to the agency’s entire inventory and not just what’s left on the lot. If you do not specifi cally reserve a fuel-effi cient vehicle, you might be stuck with a large SUV or another car or truck that costs a lot at the pump.

• Bring along your own food. Food is another oft-overlooked expense of holiday travel. If you’re fl ying, try to eat before you leave for the airport or look up the airport and/or airline regulations to determine if you can bring your own food. Food purchased at the airport or on the airplane will be more expensive and is often more unhealthy than meals you can prepare at home. When driving, pack a cooler instead of relying on truck stop eateries, which tend to be fast food restaurants.

• Try to bring gifts rather than ship them. When possible, try to squeeze as many of your holiday

gifts into your car rather than shipping them. Shipping costs can quickly add up, but you can save a lot of money if you make room for gifts in your trunk or in the backseat of your vehicle. Just be sure that the gifts do not compromise your visibility on the road. Even if you are fl y-ing, it might be more economical to place gifts in a bag you can check rather than paying sepa-rate shipping charges for each gift. Research the baggage fees versus the cost of shipping to make a more informed decision.

• Split hosting duties. If you want to save money but are accustomed to traveling to visit fam-ily and friends during the holiday season, then consider hosting a gathering at your own home. Friends and family likely won’t scoff at being re-lieved of some of their annual hosting duties, and you can limit the cost of your travel to just one trip instead of multiple trips.

• Share lodging. If you are used to staying in ho-tels when traveling for the holiday season, then you may want to share a hotel room with family members who also stay in hotels. Lodging costs tend to be very expensive during the holiday season, but splitting such costs with a friend or family member can help you stay within bud-get.

Traveling during the holiday season can be ex-pensive, but men and women willing to make a few travel concessions can save themselves a substantial amount of money. ■

TREE REMOVAL

The end of the year can be a great time for personal refl ection, but also an interesting time to look back on the more notable events that took

place across the globe since the most recent turn of the calendar year. Th e following are some of the more notable world events to un-fold in 2014.

• An outbreak of the Ebola virus begins in West Africa in February. Th e outbreak infects and even kills thousands of people, and re-mains a concern throughout the year, both in Africa and across the globe.

• Th e Seattle Seahawks dominate the Den-ver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII, which be-comes the most viewed television event in the United States. More than 111 million viewers tuned in to watch the game, which took place on February 2 in East Rutherford, NJ. Despite concerns about weather-related events in the weeks leading up to the big game, the game was ultimately played in relatively mild condi-tions.

• Th e Olympic Winter Games begin in Sochi, Russia in February. Similar to the Super Bowl, the Sochi games are surrounded by weather concerns, as many speculate that Sochi’s cli-mate is simply not cold enough to host the Olympic Winter Games. Th e weather does raise concerns once the Games commence, but the events go on with little interruption.

• Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappears over the Gulf of Th ailand. Th e Boeing 777 airliner, which took off in March and was carrying 239 people, had yet to be found at press time.

• Boko Haram, an Islamist Jihadist and terror-ist organization, claims responsibility for the April abduction of nearly 300 female students from a government school in Nigeria. Citing safety concerns, the government had closed the school in the weeks prior to the abduction, only reopening to allow students to take fi nal exams. Th e students had yet to be released at press time.

• Felipe VI ascends to the Spanish throne in June after his father, King Juan Carlos I, abdi-cates. Juan Carlos I became the fourth Europe-an monarch to abdicate in a little over a year, following Pope Benedict XVI (February 2013), Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands (April 2013) and Belgium’s King Albert II (July 2013).

• In July, tensions between Israel and Pales-tine boil over once again after three Israeli teenagers are kidnapped and murdered and one Palestinian teenager is killed in retalia-tion. Many people are killed in the resulting confl ict, which includes missile strikes and a ground invasion.

• By a 55 percent majority, the people of Scot-land vote “No” to an independence referen-dum that would have separated the country from the United Kingdom. More than 3.6 million Scots voted in the September referen-dum, which would have ended a centuries-old union had the people of Scotland voted for in-dependence.

• New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter plays the fi nal game of his career on Septem-ber 28. In an ironic twist, the game is played at Boston’s Fenway Park, home to the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees’ fi ercest rival. ■

The holiday season is dominated by parties, family gatherings and festive foods. Overindulgence in rich foods and drink during the holiday season,

compounded by cold weather that can make it difficult to exercise, often leads to weight gain by the end of the holiday season. But focusing on diet and exercise dur-ing the holiday season can help you avoid unwanted weight gain and provide more en-ergy as the season pro-gresses.

The following are some effective ways to sail through the season without gain-ing weight.

* Don’t scrimp and sacrifice all of the time. The body is a powerful machine, but it does not al-ways work the way that we want it to. According to nutritional experts, rather than metabolizing food on a daily basis, the body is geared to work over longer periods of time. That means you can balance out a high-calorie day by eating less food and/or lighter fare on the days before and after those days when you anticipate overeating.

* Fill up before you go out. If you are worried about high-calorie foods and drinks that are of-ten served at parties or holiday gatherings, eat before going to the event. Hunger may cause you to overeat and fill up on the wrong kinds of foods. Instead, eat a low-calorie snack that’s

high in protein and high in fiber before leaving the house. Eating beforehand may help you avoid the chips and dips.

* Get plenty of sunshine when possible. Lack of sunlight can attribute to winter blues, which

may lead some people to rely on comfort foods. Such foods are typically rich in carbohy-drates, fats and sug-ars. Spending time outdoors in the sun each day can im-prove your mood and get you off of the couch.

* Fill up your plate with the right mix of foods. Don’t deny yourself when faced with a big holiday dinner. Rather, fill the plate with a good mix of foods. Devote more space to lean pro-teins, such as roasted turkey or chicken. Even

lean ham is good. Devote much of the rest of your plate to roasted vegetables and whole grains. Take only small portions of high-fat foods like candied yams or bread stuffings. You will still satisfy your craving, but you won’t be overdoing it.

* Skip the spirits for the most part. Alcoholic beverages are loaded with empty calories. Many people would rather reserve bonus calo-ries for a piece of pie or a rich brownie. Limit yourself to one drink per day.

* Exercise every day. It can be easy to push exer-cise aside when you’re busy with holiday tasks. But soon your metabolism may slow down in response to your body’s suddenly more sed-entary lifestyle, leading to weight gain. Aim for some sort of daily exercise, whether you decide park further away from stores at the mall or take the stairs instead of the escalator. Don’t relegate exercise to a New Year’s resolution. Inactiv-ity will only mean you have to work harder in the future to shed those unwanted pounds you packed on during the holiday season.

Weight gain may be another part of the holiday season for many men and women. But indi-viduals concerned about adding extra pounds can stop the pattern of gaining weight during the holiday season by making smart choices throughout the season. ■

Moderation is the best approach to diet during the holiday season.

Your Sales Rep.

If you are male or female, honorably discharged from the US Armed Forces you are invited to join the Jewish War Veterans of the United States. The J.W.V. is the oldest continually ac-tive veterans organization in the US founded in the latter part of the 19th century.

We are the Sanford Kahn Post 538 J.W.V. of Kearny, West Orange. We meet monthly at the B’Nai Shalom Synagogue in WEST ORANGE for a breakfast meeting followed by a visit to the State of NJ Home for Veterans in Paramus. We provide bingo games & special refreshments for the residents. Many of these veterans have not had a visitor for over 20 years. (we are the only ones) We also participate in town affairs, ceremonial & civic affairs of a patriotic nature. Step up and be counted (as you did in the service) as a PROUD AMERICAN. If you are interested in learning more about our post or joining us, please phone Mr. Miller 973-718-1669.
