THIS YEAR LONGFIELD HOSPICE ARELAUNCHING A CHRISTMAS TREERECYCLING CAMPAIGN

BETWORTHY FARM APPLICATION UPDATEThe Betworthy Farm planning application for 24 houses, recentlywent before the development control committee at StroudDistrict council. Cllr John Burgess attended the meeting topresent to the district councillors, the report is below:To date Coaley PC has supported this application. This support has been on the basis of:1. The impact of the development on the drainage andsewerage infrastructure.

2. No further development being carried out on the exceptionsite beyond the proposed application.

3. Sympathetic integration of the new and existing properties.4. The affordable housing being prioritised for those whocomply with the local eligibility criteria in perpetuity.

Whilst these concerns were raised at the last Planning andDevelopment meeting they are worth repeating.Throughout the process concerns have been raised about theimpact of the proposed development on the drainage andsewerage infrastructure of the village. The drainage in Coaley is of the combined Foul and SurfaceWater type, so the risk posed by flooding is significant andrepresents a major concern for the members of our Parish, asseen in the responses to this application. We have ongoingissues with the sewer and drainage system being unable to copewith periods of heavy rain. There is evidence of root incursion in to the sewer pipework, which will only get worse over time, and the addition of 24 newproperties will only place additional pressure on the sewersystem.Assurances were given that these issues would be addressedbefore any development would take place. Despite theseassurances the Severn Trent report is far from convincing indemonstrating that the infrastructure can support the additionof 24 new properties and no remedial action has been proposed. The assessment identifies that there is known flooding in anumber of areas and with a confidence level of only 51% reachesa conclusion that whilst the additional houses will have a mediumimpact no improvements are required.Given the points made above it is clear that the currentsewerage is degrading and it is debatable whether it is fit forpurpose, the new development will only increase the incidenceof flooding. Were the development to be approved it would be essential thatimprovements to the drainage and sewerage system would haveto be undertaken. With regard to further development of Betworthy Farm, theParish Council are deeply concerned that further developmentwas not ruled out at the last SDC planning meeting, andfurthermore, the latest local plan shows these sites as beingcandidates for inclusion within the village settlement boundary. We look to the planning committee reassurance that theremainder of this site will remain classified as an exception site. The issues raised by Mr Tomblin have caused further concernsfor the Parish Council.Despite further redrafting there are still numerous inaccuracies inthe site plan including:• More detail on the plots is required to inform on the distancesfrom the borders and importantly the livestock barn. Also theplots appear to have been moved nearer to the ancient oaktrees in the field, although the map only shows 2 trees thereis in fact 3 of them.

• Another issue is the boundary of the site; the site planappears to encroach onto the neighbouring propertyBetworthy Farm giving a false impression on the size of theplot.

• On speaking to residents in neighbouring properties it hasbecome clear the specifications for existing propertiesbordering the site are not up to date therefore again thisprovides inaccurate data.

The meeting was also attended by local residents who haveraised objection to the proposed development along with MrGuy Wooddisse from Bayhill Property Limited. The committeeconsidered all the evidence presented to them and also carriedout a site visit. The final vote was 6 councillors to 3 to approvethe application.

To mark Remembrance Day the front of theCommunity Shop was decorated with poppiesknitted by Coaley WI and Coaley KnittingGroup, as well as a sculpture of poppies.

WI UPDATEIn September our guest speaker was from the Tallinding project. The project has set upa school in the Gambian village of Tallinding and they raise money and collect donationsto further develop the school. The school is now the top three in the country and thecurrent project is to build a pharmacy which will further benefit the students. It was reallyinteresting to see slides from the early days of the project and how it is now showing justhow much has been achieved so far.

Our October meeting included a timely talk from Pam Thomson who runs CotswoldCakes making all kinds of celebration cakes. She gave us tips on making our Christmascakes including steaming the fruit for 5 minutes before soaking in your tipple of choice asthe fruit will absorb more of the juices. She also demonstrated how to make penguinsand a snow bear to decorate the top of your cake. WI members were invited to bringalong 4 mince pies for judging and Sheila was the worthy winner.

We also had our AGM in October when the 6 WI groups making up the Coaley vale gottogether to enjoy drinks and a light supper. Richard Atkins from BBC Radio Gloucesterjoined the group and spoke about his experiences working in radio and members. Eachof the groups gave a short report on the activities that have taken place this year and the2017 programme.

Future activities include our Group Carol service which is being held on 12.12.17 at 15.45at Upper Cam Church, a county scrabble contest, our Christmas meeting (at the Prince ofWales Hotel) and our November meeting when we will hear from Multi Award winningCam Butchers.

We meet in the village hall on the third Wednesday of each month at 7.30 pm andVisitors and new members are always welcome.

COALEY PARISH NEWSLETTER 7DECEMBER 2017/JANUARY 2018DECEMBER 2017/JANUARY 20186 COALEY PARISH NEWSLETTER

ROBINSON CRUSOE AND THE PIRATESA booze cruise to the Caribbean, with a famous explorerwho nobody has ever heard of?A pirate-eating plant, belonging to a tribe of vegetariancannibals? A father and daughter playing mother andson... work that one out! It can only be the CoaleyPantomime! With every performance being a complete sell-out,audiences were treated to yet another colourful and fun-filled production, with plenty of opportunities for joiningin. On entering the hall, attention was immediately drawnto the wonderful proscenium scenery, designed by SallyHyslop, depicting seabirds and maritime flag signals (didanyone work out what they said?) The vibrant and detailedstage scenery, designed by Bob Priest and brought to lifeby the Coaley Art Club, provided the perfect backdrop tothe action.

It is always a pleasure to see new faces among thecast and crew and this year, CADS was particularlypleased to welcome nine new names to theprogramme: Paul Freeman as Blackbeard; NoahBirkbeck, Amelia Freeman, Martha Wilcox and ScarlettYoung in the chorus; Wendy Noad for choreography;Ray Fielding for backstage crew; Chlöe Matthews formake-up, and Damien Kay for providing a backingtrack to one of the songs. There were also tworeturning members in Hannah Daniels and SteveBirkbeck.

Next year will be the 20th pantomime since itsresurrection in 1999, which was originally intended tobe a one-off production to celebrate the newmillennium. However, it proved to be so popular thatit was decided to produce an annual show. Insubsequent years, it has grown into the annual pre-Christmas event that we know and love. Let’s hope wecontinue to see even more new faces joining in withthis fun and rewarding activity (age 7 upwards). Watchout for the newsletter in the early part of next year fordetails on how to become involved.

Lastly, congratulations to everyone who was involvedin this year’s production, both on stage and behindthe scenes. Most of all, special thanks go to all themembers of the audiences who came along to supportthis worthwhile cause. See you next year!

Right from the rousing opening number to the toe-tappingfinale, the seafaring adventure rolled along at a lively rate ofknots. The script, (by Limelight Scripts) was full of jokes andinnuendos and the talented cast clearly gave it their all, whilehaving fun connecting with the audience and adding theirown unique touches to the dialogue. After his triumphantappearance as the dame in last year’s production, Paul Daydecided to change roles and become a director this year, ably assisted by his daughter Emily (who was also involvedon stage and backstage!) All the musical numbers weredelivered with obvious enjoyment and enthusiasm by ayoung and talented chorus, many of whom had several rolesto play. Full marks to the backstage crew, who in addition totheir usual scenery changing tasks, successfully managed tomanoeuvre several very largeitems on and off the stage. Inthe second act, the action tookplace on a cannibal island anda huge cooking pot, constructed by prop-maestroDave Prout, which was largeenough to contain 6 actors, appeared as if by magic!
