Description/overview of decade

The fifties changed all our lives so that we do live differently now. The scientific and mass production advances made during the second World War, meant that the fifties changed forever the way people lived, for example, technological changes in fibres, communication and medicine.

Compared to today an average house in Perth Amboy will cost 220,000. Back then a brand new house will cost 8,450. A tremendous amount of prices increased during the years.More prices from the 50's decade :

1950 - Pres. Harry Truman  ( 'til 1952) approves production of the hydrogen bomb and sends air force and navy to Korea in June. (top right picture of him)1953 - 1961 Dwight D. Eisenhower  is president.1952 - The Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1952 removes racial and ethnic barriers to becoming U.S. citizen.  1953 -  Julius and Ethel Rosenberg are electrocuted for their part in W.W.II espionage.1953 - Fighting ends in Korea.

1954 -  U. S. Senator Joseph McCarthy begins televised hearings into alleged Communists in the army. 

1954 - Racial segregation is ruled unconstitutional in public schools by the U.S. Supreme Court. 

1955 -  Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama. 

1955 - The American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations merge making the new AFL-CIO an organization with 15 million members.

Society & CultureDuring the fifties, American education underwent dramatic and, for some, world shattering changes. Until 1954, an official policy of "separate but equal" educational opportunities for blacks had been determined to be the correct method to insure that all children in America received an adequate and equal education in the public schools of the nation.  In 1954, Chief Justice Earl Warren and other members of the Supreme Court wrote in Brown v. the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas that separate facilities for blacks did not make those facilities equal according to the Constitution.

When the 1950s are mentioned, the first type of music to come to most people's minds is  rock 'n roll. Developed from a blend of Southern blues and gospel music with an added strong back beat, this type of music was popular with teenagers who were trying to break out of the mainstream, conservative, American middle class mold.  Popular artists such as Bill Haley,  Elvis Presley, and  Jerry Lee Lewis  were promoted on radio by just as popular disc-jockeys (DJ's) like Alan Freed and the Big Bopper.

 In 1957, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) asked Congress for $2.5 million to eradicate an insect pest that stripped trees in northeastern forests – the gypsy moth. The plan was to spray up to three million acres with a mixture of DDT and oil. Within a month after the spraying started, residents on Long Island filed suit in federal court charging that the USDA planes were flying too low, were spraying too heavily and during high winds, and that the DDT was killing fish, birds, farm and garden crops. Later, it was reported that milk from cows in the area was banned from sale because of high levels of DDT.

And ....The ants had been migrating from Mexico up into the South. There were conflicting reports about the damage the ants were doing. Some studies said that the pests didn't particularly bother farm workers and that land values were not affected. But other farmers – some of them with powerful political connections – complained that the ants built nests that created high mounds of dirt in the middle of fields and that their bites stung. Some claimed – without much evidence – that the ants attacked and even killed calves, pigs and chickens. The supporters found a case where one eight-year-old boy, who was extremely allergic to all kinds of insect bites, died from a fire ant bite.

At the beginning of the 1960s, Americans could be forgiven for thinking that they were

standing at the dawn of a golden age. Superficially, at least, the years since the end of World War II had been marked by progress, prosperity, moderation and old-fashioned good sense, and there was no reason to think that the 60s would be any

different.

Joseph Pratt noted: "It was a good time to be in business in the United States, an era when American efficiency and entrepreneurship were the wonder of

the world."During the 1960s the United States experienced its longest uninterrupted period of

economic expansion in history. Whereas automobiles, chemicals, and electrically powered consumer

durables were the leading sectors in the 1950s, they were supplanted by aerospace, housing, and the

computer industry in the 1960s.

The '60s begin with a race for President, and John F. Kennedy wins by promising to keep the U.S. ahead of the Soviet Union in the Space Race and Cold War. America's new President is young and charismatic; the First Lady is sophisticated and fashionable. The nation is on the brink of a fresh political era, with the old era of segregation on its way out.Four years later, the campaign focus moves from Cold War to active war. Candidate Barry Goldwater supports bombing in Vietnam, and loses the Presidential race by a landslide.

Society And Culture

The sixties were the age of youth, as70 million children from the post-war baby boom became teenagers and young adults.  The movement away from the conservative fifties continued and eventually resulted in revolutionary ways of thinking and real change in the cultural fabric of American life.  No longer content to be images of the generation ahead of them, young people wanted change. The changes affected education, values, lifestyles, laws, and entertainment.  Many of the revolutionary ideas which began in the sixties are continuing to evolve today.

Environment

The contraceptive, or birth control pill was introduced in Australia in the 1960s. It had a significant impact on society, granting women greater sexual freedom and allowing them to control when and if they had children. The Pill also sparked much moral debate during the 1960s about pre-marital sex and promiscuity.
