DECEMBER 01, 2019 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

A VIEW FROM THE PEW

Twenty-Five Reasons To Smile

It’s Advent! Jesus is coming soon. Colored lights dance against the dark. Carols

exalt us. John Lennon, who imagined a world without religion, couldn’t imagine one

without Christmas. Holiday cards keep on coming. Tinsel, evergreens, angels. Light-

ing family Advent wreaths. Sleigh bells, generous hearts, visitors, parties, cookies with

sprinkles, sparkly sweaters, fuzzy mittens, manger scenes, Nativity plays. Flash mobs

singing “Messiah” at the mall. Children’s faces. Reconciliations. The hope of peace

on earth. Good will within reach everywhere.

Warming Up To Advent

Today is the first week in Advent, and the readings underscore the sea-

son’s sense of warmth and joyful anticipation. As our days grow cooler,

Isaiah provides an image of God protecting the Israelites from the

elements: “...the Lord’s glory will be shelter and protection.” The psalm,

too, trumpets a sense of joy and protection under God: “Let us go rejoic-

ing to the house of the Lord.” Then the Gospel brings us an Advent sense

of happy expectation, with Jesus envisioning the faith-filled centurion at

the heavenly banquet. Today, as you slip on a sweater to fight a chill, or

share a meal with others, take heart in being part of the worldwide

Christian community beginning our Advent season of warmth and joyful

anticipation.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

Coming Home for Christmas

Advent presents a wonderful opportunity to

invite all of our people to “Come Home for

Christmas,” a time to experience peace and

goodwill and to know that as a child of God, we

are loved and that God is always near. Advent

is a season that prepares us for the celebrations

of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas).

Advent is always a good time to reach out and

invite inactive parishioners and indeed the

wider community to “Come Home for Christ-

mas.” Think about it — wouldn’t you like an

invitation to join with others as we celebrate the

birth of Christ!

Make it an Advent event: Come join us every

Wednesday, 7:30 am - 8:30 am in the Chapel

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Spend a Holy Hour with our Lord Jesus Christ!

DECEMBER 01, 2019 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Solemnity of the Immaculate

Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

While this very important celebration is

usually on December 8, since that is a

Sunday this year, all the Masses for

December 7/8 will be for the Second Sunday

of Advent. The Solemnity of the Immacu-

late Conception is transferred to Monday,

December 9th as a HolyDay of Obligation.

MSOS Masses on Monday, December 9th,

will be celebrated at 6:30 am and 5:30 pm.

ATTENTION ALL LECTORS

We invite you to attend the 5:30 pm Mass on Monday,

December 9th when the annual recommissioning of lectors

takes place. It is time, once again, to renew our resolve and

dedication as Proclaimers of the Word. We are God’s

instruments. We have been blessed in so many ways,

including our talent as lectors. What better way to give

back to God for all that He has given us.

Together, let’s dedicate this Eucharistic Celebration as

thanksgiving because every time we proclaim His Word,

God is always being glorified in us.

Tuesday

December 10, 2019

6:15 PM

Please join us for our Communal Reconciliation

Service, including Scripture, examination of

conscience and an opportunity for individual

confession.

Pope Francis said: “Confession is the Sacrament

of the tenderness of God, His way of embracing

us.” Come and feel His embrace at our Advent

Penance Service.

We will have priests from around the Diocese

who will be here at our Parish to hear Confes-

sions.

MISA de GALLO

(MEE-sah day GAH-yoh)

(Mass of the Rooster)

It’s that time of year, once again, when the ever

present Rooster awakens us for Mass at 5:30 am every

morning starting December 16th and ending Decem-

ber 24th. (Hence the reason for the title “Mass of the

Rooster,” which literally happens in the Philippines

where the tradition started.)

A festive rather than solemn mood pervades these

observances in spite of the fact that Masses begin at

5:30 in the morning. It’s a celebration of Hope

reminding everyone to “prepare the way” of the Lord.

We invite one and all to celebrate this beautiful tradi-

tion as we await the coming of our Lord and Savior,

Jesus Christ. After each service, we share in the after-

Mass Continental breakfast of coffee and pastries.

Come with expectant FAITH, HOPE and LOVE!

Henry Hoffman was recently baptized at MSOS

by Fr. Frankie. Henry is the grandson of long-

time parishioner and retired MSOS school

teacher, Nettie Hoffman. Congratulations to the

entire Hoffman family!!!

SCHOOL NEWS

MARY, STAR OF THE SEA EARLY LEARNING CENTER

November Is Native American Heritage Month

The month of November is recognized as “Native American Heritage” month. It is a time to celebrate the

rich and diverse cultures, tradition, history and to acknowledge the important contribution of Native

American people. It is also a time to educate the general public about Native American tribes and culture,

and to share the unique challenges as Native Americans. Recently, members of the Oahu tribal council,

representing seven Native American tribes visited the Early Learning Center to share their cultural

history, music and songs with our young students and teachers. These included the Hopi, Navajo, Creek,

Shoshone, Otoe, Oneida and Lummi tribes.

MARY, STAR OF THE SEA SCHOOL

Kindergarten to Grade 8 A Strong Foundation Matters

It’s been a busy season of giving at MSOS! The school’s stuffed animals

from our first quarter drive finally arrived at their homes. Mahalo to the

YMCA for transporting our student council to the Children’s Justice

Center and the highlight was, of course, the Humane Society, to hand-

deliver the furry buddies. Each

location met the children with

gratitude and gave student tours.

Students from Kindergarten to

Grade 8 also recently participated in the school’s annual Thanksgiv-

ing Food Drive that supports our Mainland friends.

On behalf of Mary, Star of the Sea School Faculty and Students, we

would like to extend God’s bountiful blessings upon the MSOS

community and may your Thanksgiving gatherings be filled with

treasured memories with family and friends.

Give and it will be given unto you. (Luke 6:38)
