PG 5 ǀ St. Barbara Catholic Church

In our Gospel for the Second Sunday of Advent, we encounter the figure of John the Baptist. We are told that “John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on locusts and wild honey.” John’s mission was simple. He came to prepare the way of the Lord.

We are told that “the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him.” What could have attracted them? Sure it was not his fashion statements or his culinary skills! I suspect something he said resonated with the people there. It might have been that he proclaimed “a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.”

I have met a lot of people who (like me) need to repent of their sins. Because of this, I need to hear John the Baptist’s message. And, when I hear and take to heart his message, I understand anew the meaning of and need for the season of Advent. What a blessing it is—what a gift!

Our first reading for this weekend begins with: “Comfort, give comfort to my people.” It is taken from that part of the book of Isaiah referred to as the Book of Consolation. It was intended to console Israel in their exile. And now, it offers us great consolation knowing what God has done for us. Isn’t it comforting to know that a Messiah has come to save us from our sins—to take away whatever gets in the way between us and God, between us and eternal life, between us and peace, joy, and light that never ends?

During this Advent season let us prepare the way to the Consolation that came from Heaven—let us prepare the way of the Lord, our Savior, who is coming to set us free.

Advent Reconciliation Service As a way to prepare the way of the Lord, on December

19 at 7PM, we will have a reconciliation service for the people of St. Barbara and St. Louise de Marillac. This sacrament is another of God's invaluable gifts for his beloved people. We hope you will take the time to attend and thus receive the grace of repentance and forgiveness. That way, we will be truly ready to receive the Lord. The service will be here at St. Barbara.

From the Desk of Fr.
