FROM FR. QUINT

As we come to this third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete (Latin word

for “rejoice”) Sunday, we dawn the rose colored vestments and light the rose candle of the Advent wreathe, signifying that the celebration of Christ’s birth is near. Beginning on Friday the scripture readings for daily Mass will move us to ponder more deeply the events leading up to Jesus’ birth. Join us!

The Ember Days are this week. Traditionally, they were days of added prayer and fasting related to agriculture. They occur at the change of seasons throughout the year. The weather on these 3 days is supposed to be indicative of the weather for the next three months. Wednesday, Dec 14 (January); Friday, Dec 16 (February); Saturday Dec 17 (March). The Ember Days for fall were right on target with warm, mild temperatures and little precipitation. Let’s hope these days are mild and dry again! Some prayer and fasting won’t hurt us either as we pray that the ag economy will improve. Farmers are the basis for the “food chain” in many ways!

• This week we’ll be hearing confessions for the Faith Formation students at Earlville. Pray for everyone coming to confession in this season of preparation. Parents – come to confession as well.

• Thanks for picking up your budget envelopes and those of relatives, friends, coworkers and neighbors. Let’s get these out as soon as possible and avoid embarrassment for some folks.

• Today (Sunday) we’ll have five priests on hand for confessions at the Communal Penance Service in New Vienna at 2 pm. Don’t be shy! You’ll be able to go face-to-face or behind a screen.

• The Beckman Catholic Christmas Vocal Music Christmas concert is tonight (Sunday) at 6 pm at the basilica. All are welcome.

• We have had some folks come to the priest “chat times” on Satur-days this Advent. Still some opportunities remaining if you would benefit from a visit.

• Thanks for your generosity to our parishes and schools throughout the year, but especially as this calendar year comes to a close. We hope to get back to budgeted amounts of income at locations that are struggling. Give some thought to increasing your gift each year. Many people have offered gifts via their mandatory IRA distribution, offerings of stocks/mutual funds, and contributions of grain/livestock.

Beckman ~

THIS TIME OF YEAR many families are busy with tax planning. It may also be a good time to review your estate plan and make sure your will is up to date. Please consider including Xavier, Hennessy and Beckman as part of your estate plan. CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STO PROGRAM ARE FILLING UP FAST. Applications are available on-line at the Archdiocesan website, www.ourfaithsto.org or contact Beckman Catholic HS. Please consider helping students at Beckman, Xavier, and Hennessy with your donation and qualify for a 65% Iowa state tax credit and a federal charitable deduction.

EDUCATION SAVINGS ACCOUNTS Church leaders across the state and even the country are ex-cited about promoting school choice. Funding for school choice would come through Education Savings Accounts (ESA’s). Such programs would be a huge gain for our Catholic schools. To learn more about ESA’s, visit this web site: https://www.edchoice.org/school-choice/types-of-school- choice/education-savings-account/

THE RESPECT LIFE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE OFFICES OF THE ARCHDIOCESE have developed a year-long program to learn about various topics related to respect life and social justice. There are program sessions that are catered to all ages and various parish settings. The first session uses Advent, the season of waiting for Christ, the Prince of Peace, to introduce the topic of Building Peace and Just War Theory. For information and to access the sessions go to: dbqarch.org/rlsj/formation.

COMMUNAL PENANCE will be held today, Dec. 11th, at 2:00 pm at St. Boniface Church. Five priests will be available for confessions, and the opportunity to go face-to-face or behind the screen. Come and receive the grace of God. We have much for which to be thankful and we are always in need of His forgiveness. HELP SETTING UP MASS AT PETERSBURG: We thank many couples for volunteering their time/energy to prepare for Masses on weekends and a few Holy Days/Holidays. Six couples came, practiced and prepared for this duty last Sunday and a few more are coming to prepare this Sunday, Dec. 11th, after Mass. They will prepare/set up for Mass, and then make sure all is put away after Mass. It is not tremendously time consuming but essential for Mass to start on time: e.g. put in place wine, water, chalices, keys, purificators, etc.. and lock everything up after Mass. There are many people who already do so much for the church - selling Scrip or distributing Communion or others who choose appropriate music and practice it every week, or do the scheduling of all the lay people, or clean the church once a week, or wash the purificators, or put up the seasonal decorations, the list goes on. Ask yourself what you can do for your church. WANT TO ASK A QUESTION? Do you wish to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation? In either case, mark your calendar for Saturdays during Advent. We priests have been spending a little more time in church this Advent, to answer your questions or to administer reconciliation. Since I have two parishes, I will be at Petersburg next Saturday, Dec. 17th at 10 am, and at New Vienna, Dec. 24th at 11 am. You may notice that the other priests of the Cluster are sitting in a pew. I will most likely be in the confessional, which can also be used as a conference room (the heater is in there and it is warmer!). SCRIP, SCRIP, SCRIP: Maybe I am wasting my time writing this, but high school and grade school students can jump in and help too. You can buy a Scrip card for one of the fast food places or gas stations and use it instead of cash. You do not spend any more money and you can do a tremendous service for your parish/school. You designate where you want the profit from your purchase to go, i.e. to parish, high school or grade school. Adults, you can do the same thing. Take a minute and stop at the table or one of the banks where they sell Scrip and purchase the Scrip you need. The holiday season is here! RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS: Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have offered their lives in service to others - educating the young, comforting the sick, and seeking justice for the oppressed. Today, many are frail, elderly, and in need of assistance. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to furnish medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Please give generously. There is an envelope for donations in your budget box.

IRA ~ Individuals 70 1/2 or older who are required to withdraw funds from his/her existing IRA can make direct contributions to our parishes and/or schools. These gifts are a great way for individuals to support the parish and school mission as well as provide great tax benefit for the individual. It is important to know that to qualify, the person must request his/her financial institution send the money directly to the parish or school. By doing so, they avoid paying income taxes on the distribution. This is very lucrative for those who do not rely on the IRA distribution for retirement income. But to qualify it is required the donor have the financial institution send the money directly to the parish and school. Please consult your tax preparer or parish bookkeeper for more information.

A RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE WILL BE MONDAY DEC. 19TH from 2:30 to 6:30 pm at St. Francis Xavier school audito-rium. All presenters will receive a coupon for a pint of Culver's frozen custard and also a T-shirt while supplies last. Call for an appointment 1-800-REDCROSS or online at www.redcrossblood.org or call Shirley at 875-6015.
