This Sunday is the Third Sunday of Advent, also known as Gaudete Sunday! Gaudete is a Latin word that commands us to “rejoice!” So, today is Rejoice Sunday! The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of his second coming to judge the living and the dead. For the first two weeks of Advent, the focus can be summed up in the phrase, "The Lord is coming," but beginning with Gaudete Sunday, the summary might be, "The Lord is near." On Gaudete Sunday, the season of Advent shifts its focus. This shift is marked by a lighter mood and a heightened sense of joyous anticipation. On this Sunday, we light the third (rose-colored) candle on our Advent wreath. Liturgically, the colors lighten to increase our hope and gladden our hearts with greater joy. We need more hope and joy in our lives because all too often in our lives, we find ourselves in situations that are similar to St. John the Baptist in today’s Gospel. At the very beginning from the Gospel of

Matthew today, we hear that St. John the Baptist in prison. The image that we see here this week is Saint John the Baptist in Prison Visited by Two Disciples (1455/60) by Giovanni di Paolo. This painting is on display in our very own Art Institute of Chicago. It belongs to a collection of six panels, scenes, from the life of St. John the Baptist. Every time I go to the Art Institute, I always find these paintings to look at, and I encourage everyone to look at them as well on a visit to the Art Institute. In this image, we see St. John the Baptist standing behind iron bars, speaking to his disciples. Although in prison, St. John the Baptist is not filled with sorrow. The disciple on the left is weeping, covering his face with covered hands. Why is St. John the Baptist not weeping like his disciple? He hears the news that these messengers tell him that because of Jesus the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, deaf hear, and the dead are raised. In the archway on the right, we see a lame person now walking, carrying his crutches on his shoulders! St. John the Baptist rejoices that the promised Savior is near! His heart is filled with hope, rejoicing, and gladness that the time of salvation is close at hand, and that the dominion of the devil is at an end.

Giovanni di Paolo illustrates very clearly that

the devil’s reign of evil, sin, and death has come to an end, although it’s not clear to modern viewers eyes. Look at the bottom right of the panel. What do we see? A leopard chained to the prison wall. The leopard wasn’t just chosen by di Paolo at random and for no reason. Its symbolism was known to people of his time, but not to our “enlightened” 21st century minds. In Christian art, the leopard is often a symbol for the devil, sin, and cruelty. di Paolo chains the leopard to the prison wall on purpose to illustrate the heart of today’s Gospel message, which makes St. John the Baptist rejoice: the reign of the devil, evil, and sin has come to an end! In Jesus, God has chained the devil and God is triumphant over sin and evil. Yes, St. John the Baptist may be going through difficulty and suffering evil, but this time of evil and suffering is now coming to a close. The times in which we live may be filled with fear, suffering, and evil, like St. John the Baptist in prison, but this Sunday’s celebration is a reminder that God, who loves us and is ever nearer to us, is in charge! Our Savior is near! God comes to save us and this message fills us with tremendous hope and joy!

Advent Reconciliation Service at 7 PM. Confessions will be available on Tuesday in English and Spanish. On Saturday, December 17, we will have Polish confessions from 7 -8 PM. There will be no confessions heard on Saturday afternoon, December 24, due to Christmas Eve schedule.

Please pray for all the elderly in our nation and around the world that they may be treated with respect and

compassion, and that we as a society may more fully embrace their gifts of wisdom and grace. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care, and St. Joseph pray for us.

Celebramos hoy el Tercer Domingo de Adviento, también conocido como Domingo de Gaudete! Gaudete es una palabra latina que nos manda a "regocijar!" Así que, hoy es ¡domingo de regocijo! La iluminación progre-siva de las velas simboliza la expectativa y esperanza que rodea la primera venida de nuestro Señor al mundo y la anticipación de su segunda venida para juzgar a los vivos y los muertos. Durante las primeras dos semanas de Adviento, el enfoque se puede resumir en la frase: "El Señor viene", pero a partir del domingo de Gaudete, el resumen podría ser: "El Señor está cerca". El domingo de Gaudete, cambia su enfoque en la temporada de Adviento. Este cambio está marcado por un estado de ánimo más ligero y un mayor sentido de anticipación gozosa. En este domingo, encenderemos la tercera vela (color rosa) en nuestra corona de Adviento. Litúrgica-mente, los colores se iluminan para aumentar nuestra esperanza y alegrar nuestros corazones con mayor gozo. Necesitamos más esperanza y alegría en nuestras vidas porque con demasiada frecuencia, nos encon-

tramos en situaciones similares a las de San Juan Bautista en el Evangelio de hoy. Al comienzo del evangelio de Mateo hoy, oímos que San Juan Bautista está en la cárcel. La imagen que vemos aquí esta semana, es de San Juan Bautista en Prisión Visitado por dos dis-cípulos (1455/60) por Giovanni di Paolo. Esta pintura está en la exhibición en nuestro Instituto de Arte de Chicago. Pertenece a una colección de seis paneles, escenas, de la vida de San Juan Bautista. Cada vez que voy al Instituto de Arte, siempre busco estas pinturas para verlas y animo a todos a ir a verlas también en una visita al Ins-tituto de Arte. En la imagen, vemos a San Juan Bautista de pie detrás de barras de hierro, hablando a sus discípulos. Aunque se encuentra en la cárcel, San Juan Bautista no está lleno de tristeza. El discípulo en la izquierda está llorando, cubriendo su rostro con las manos. ¿Por qué San Juan Bautista no llora como su discípulo? Oye las noti-cias que estos mensajeros le dicen, que por causa de Jesús los ciegos ven, los inválidos caminan, los leprosos quedan limpios, los sordos oyen y los muertos resucitan. En el arco de la derecha, vemos a una persona coja caminando ahora, llevando sus muletas sobre sus hom-bros. San Juan Bautista se regocija de que el Salvador prometido esté cerca. Su corazón está lleno de esperanza, regocijo y alegría porque el tiempo de la salvación está cerca y que el dominio del dia-blo ha terminado. Giovanni di Paolo ilustra muy claramente de que el reino del diablo, del mal, el pecado y la muerte ha llegado a su fin, aunque no es claro a los ojos de los espectadores modernos. Mira en la parte inferior derecha del panel. ¿Qué vemos? Un leopardo encadenado a la pared de la prisión. El leopardo no fue elegido por di Paolo al azar y sin ninguna razón. Su simbolismo era conocido por la gente de su tiempo, pero no a por nuestras "iluminadas" mentes del siglo XXI. En el arte cristiano, el leopardo es a menudo un símbolo del diablo, el pecado y la crueldad. Di Paolo encadena al leopardo a la pared de la prisión con el propósito de ilustrar el corazón del mensaje del Evan-gelio de hoy, que hace que San Juan Bautista se regocije: ¡el reinado del diablo, el mal y el pecado ha llegado a su fin! Este martes, 13 de diciembre, tendremos nuestro Servicio de Reconciliación de Adviento a las 7 PM. Confesiones estarán disponi-bles el martes en inglés y español. El sábado 17 de diciembre, tendremos confesiones en polaco entre las 7 y las 8 de la noche. No habrá confesiones el sábado por la tarde, 24 de diciembre, debido al horario de Nochebuena. Por favor, oren por todos los ancianos en nuestra nación y en todo el mundo para que puedan ser tratados con respeto y compasión y que como sociedad abracemos más plenamente sus dones de sabiduría y gracia. Que la Santísima Virgen María, Madre de Buena Ayuda, nos proteja con su cuidado materno y San José ruegue por nosotros. Vivat Jesus! ¡Viva Jesús!

Dzisiaj wypada III Niedziela Adwentu, czyli „Niedziela Gaudete”. „Gaudete” jest łacińskim wezwaniem, oznaczającym: „Radujcie się!” Świece kolejno zapalane na wieńcu adwentowym symbolizują obecny czas oczekiwania i radości związanej z Pierwszym Przyjściem Jezusa oraz Jego Drugim Przyjściem, kiedy sądzić będzie żywych i umarłych. Istota pierwszych dwóch tygodni Adwentu zawiera się w słowach: „Pan nadchodzi!”. Jednak począwszy od tej niedzieli, owe słowa powinny brzmieć: „Pan jest blisko!” W „Niedzielę Gaudete” zmienia się bowiem punkt ciężkości Adwentu – zaczyna dominować lżejszy, radośniejszy nastrój i wzmożone poczucie oczekiwania. Dzisiaj zapalamy trzecią, różaną świecę na wieńcu adwentowym. Barwy tych czterech świec są stopniowo coraz jaśniejsze. W sensie liturgicznym, oznacza to wzrastającą w naszych sercach nadzieję oraz radość.

Nasz świat desperacko potrzebuje radości i nadziei. Aż nazbyt często zdarzają w naszym życiu sytuacje podobne do tej, w jakiej znalazł się święty Jan Chrzciciel. W dzisiejszym czytaniu z Ewangelii według św. Mateusza, Jan Chrzciciel zostaje wtrącony do więzienia. Widzicie tu obraz Giovanniego di Paolo, zatytułowany „Uczniowie odwiedzający św. Jana Chrzciciela w więzieniu” (lata 1455-1460). Owe dzieło wystawione jest w tutejszym Chicagowskim Instytucie Sztuki (Chicago Art Institute). Należy ono do kolekcji sześciu paneli, z których każdy przedstawia jedną scenę z życia Świętego. Odwiedzając Instytut Sztuki, zawsze podziwiam te obrazy, do czego i Was zachęcam. Na tym obrazie widzimy świętego Jana przemawiającego do swoich uczniów zza krat. I chociaż znajduje się w więzieniu, Janowi nie jest przykro. Uczeń po lewej zalewa się łzami. Święty Jan nie płacze: usłyszał bowiem przesłanie, jakie przynieśli mu uczniowie – dzięki Jezusowi ślepi odzyskują wzrok, głusi słuch, chromi znowu chodzą, trędowaci są uzdrowieni, a zmarli wstają z martwych. W wejściu po prawej widać chromego niosącego na ramionach własne kule, których już nie potrzebuje! Jan Chrzciciel raduje się, bo Zbawiciel jest blisko! Jego serce przepełnia radość, nadzieja i wdzięczność; dobiega końca panowanie Złego. Giovanni di Paolo pokazuje nam tutaj, że skończyły się diabelskie rządy zła, grzechu i śmierci, chociaż dla nas nie od razu jest to jasne. Spójrzcie w dolny prawy róg obrazu. Widać tam lamparta przykutego łańcuchem do ściany. To zwierzę pojawia się na obrazie di Paolo nie bez powodu. Ludzie w jego czasach wiedzieli dlaczego, jednak nasze „oświecone” umysły XXI wieku nie są w stanie tego pojąć. W sztuce chrześcijańskiej lampart często jest symbolem Diabła, symbolem zła i okrucieństwa. Lampart przykuty łańcuchem do ściany stanowi sedno dzisiejszej Ewangelii – radujcie się, kończy się panowanie zła! Przez Chrystusa, Bóg odniósł zwycięstwo nad Diabłem i śmiercią. Owszem, św. Jan cierpi w więzieniu, ale czas cierpień już się kończy. Obecne czasy pełne są lęku i zła, ale dzisiejsza niedziela przypomina nam o tym, że ostatnie słowo ma tu zawsze Bóg. Bóg, Który nas miłuje i Który zawsze jest blisko. W nadchodzący wtorek: 13 grudnia od 7:00 wieczorem, wszyscy chętni będą mogli przystąpić do Spowiedzi Świętej (w języku angielskim i hiszpańskim). Z kolei w sobotę, 17 grudnia między 7:00 a 8:00 wieczorem, księża wysłuchają Spowiedzi po polsku. Ze względu na wigilijny rozkład liturgii, nie będzie Spowiedzi w sobotnie popołudnie, 24 grudnia. Pamiętajmy w modlitwie o wszystkich osobach starszych na całym świecie, aby byli oni zawsze traktowani z szacunkiem i współczuciem. Módlmy się też o to, abyśmy jako społeczeństwo potrafili przyjąć i docenić dar mądrości, jaki ofiarują nam osoby starsze. Święta Maryjo, Matko Nieustającej Pomocy, miej nas zawsze opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami.

LADIES OF THE ROSARY NEWS BEADS ... Monthly Mass The Ladies of the Rosary gather on the first Sunday of the month at the 7:30 a.m. Mass to attend Mass as a group. All ladies of the parish are invited to attend and celebrate with the group. January Meeting There is no January meeting for the Ladies of the Rosary. Instead, join them for Hawaii in January.
