A MIGHTY MILITARY MACHINE A Powerful Army Assyrians used inventions in war. Assyrians were mean, nasty people. They had iron weapons and only a few of

their enemies had weapons made of iron. They tried all of the possible ways to get

inside the city walls of their enemy.

Harsh Treatment of Captured People: Assyrians killed or captured many people. They also killed enemy leaders, burned cities

and exiled people to far away places.

ASSYRIA BUILDS A HUGE EMPIRE

A Huge Empire Assyria ruled the conquered lands by appointing a native governor

who would then be expected to obey under the Assyrian Emperor’s direction.

The Assyrian army provided protection to the lands they ruled but the governor had to pay for that protection with tributes.

If the local governor didn’t pay, than the Assyrian army would destroy the cities and villages and exile the people that lived there.

Assyria Crumbles In 609 B.C., the Assyrian empire fell because the Medes and

Chaldeans joined together and defeated them. The Medes and Chaldeans completely destroyed the Assyrian capital

of Nineveh.

A NEW BABYLONIAN EMPIREChaldeans take Assyrian Lands After the fall of the Assyria Empire, the Chaldean Empire became famous

in 605 - 562 B.C. The Chaldean armies drove the Egyptians out of their lands and took

control of the important trading cities. Their means ways caused revolts by the captive people.

Height of Wealth and Power The Chaldean Emperor rebuilt the capital city of Babylon and created the

colorful Ishtar Gate. He also built a huge ziggurat that was 300 ft. tall. To please his wife, he built an artificial mountain with plants and trees.

The Empire Fades Weak emperors and internal conflicts upset and divided the Chaldeans. This weakened state made it easy for other city-states to conquer the land

that belonged to the Chaldeans.
