Who hasn’t occasionally dreamed o spending a winter in the Bahamas, Mexico or the pampas o Argentina.  Tink o western tanagers, orioles and barn swallows.  Likewise, we can empathize with those birds that spend their entire lives here, doing their best to survive the worst that winter can throw at them. In this category place horned larks and great horned owls and magpies. ough birds.  But what to make o birds that migrate to the Mon tana prairies to enjoy our winter; birds that come here or winter and only winter.  Te quick answer is they are here because we look like the Bahamas compared to where they came rom.  Our winter visitors range rom snowy owls to rough-legged hawks to snow buntings. By their names alone they are the perect winter guests. The migratory snowy owls have swooped down upon the United States in greater numbers than at any time in at least 50 years. The owls have been spotted as far south as Bermuda, the Carolinas and Missouri, according to news reports. This migration of snowy owls southward is called an irruption, and this is the “largest of its kind in recent memory,” said Kevin McGowan, a bird expert at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology at Cornell University .

Montana’s 2014-2015 huntingregulation proposals up for review   Montanans will have a number o opportunities toreview and comment on 2014-2015 hunting regulationproposals by going on online now or by attending one o43 public meetings beginning in January.  Last summer, FWP held seven meetings across thestate and received nearly 1,200 comments that led toseveral new hunting season proposals.  At the meetings in January, FWP will presentproposals to aid the recovery o Montana’s declining deerpopulations by reducing hunting pressure on antlerlessmule deer and white-tailed deer. Wildlie managerssurmise Montana’s deer numbers are in decline statewidedue to a number o unique circumstances—rom thecyclical nature o mule deer populations to predation anddisease and rom drought to tough winter conditions.  For the next two hunting seasons, with a ew exceptionsto address game damage issues, FWP proposes to:1. convert general mule deer seasons to antlered-only;2. eliminate most mule deer B, or antlerless, licenses;3. eliminate white-tailed deer B licenses in Regions 4 and

6 and in most o Region 5.  Details on the proposed hunting regulations areavailable on FWP’s website at wp.mt.gov. Click “2014-2015 Hunting Proposals,” where one can find a completecalendar o meeting times and locations, and additional

inormation on each proposal. Te proposals encompasshunting season dates and nearly every huntable species inthe state, including antelope, black bear, bighorn sheep, bison, deer, elk, moose, mountain goat, mountain lion, and a variety o upland game birds.  Comments may be submitted at the local meetings, which are set or Jan 4-23, 2014 statewide, or online at wp.mt.gov. Written comments may be sent to: FWP—WildlieBureau, Attn: Public Comment, P.O. Box 200701, Helena,M 59620-0701. For questions not covered on the website, call 406-444-2612.  Comments are due by 5 p.m. on Jan. 24, 2014. TeFish & Wildlie Commission will adopt final regulationsin February.

It’s been a while sinceI voiced my opinion on anysubject, and I have beenquestioned about that.  Afer about the thirdinquiry, I headed to myavorite thinking seat toconsider why this was.........afer all these olks wereright, I probably hadn’t hadanything to say since lateFebruary or early March.ournament ime.  We had a nice spring, summer was glorious, thecrops were great.........what’sto talk about? But here we arehal way through Decemberand High School Basketball is

not even warmed up yet.  High School Basketballofficially begins on the 25tho November, the first daythe kids can participate inorganized, coached practices.Open gym, communityleagues, pick-up games don’tcount, and a student athletecannot compete in a HighSchool Basketball game untilthey have participated in ten“official” practices......this ruleis rom the Montana HighSchool Association (MHSA).I have always wonderedi they have spies in every

Hugh’s been sittin’ & thinkin’...school or just how this rulecan be enorced.  Te NBA has beenunderway or a month or six,and will continue on until.......what? June? College ball hasbeen going or a month or soas well.  I think I have a solutionto make each level better.Youcan’t hold a copy o the rulebook and watch an NBA gameand not wonder what is goingon, so many violations are justoverlooked, and it’s explainedaway by the hackneyed oldphrase.......”they’re lettin’ ‘emplay”.Drop down a level and

College ball is just slightlymore heavily policed......Ah,but High School Ball.........those kids have to perorm tothe letter o the book.  Why don’t we do a littleswitcheroo........Bring theNBA officials to the HighSchool ranks.......afer allthese kids are just learningthe game, and maybe shouldbe given a little leeway. With that part in place thecollege officials would be justfine, and the the NBA getsHigh School res, and theyactually have to play by therules, might make or betterBasketball.

Ain’t gonna happen...... .and that okay, I guess. Aew games beore Christmas vacation, then things getserious .........can’t wait.  Merry Christmas andHappy New Year......... Supportyour local High School teams. It’s amazing how they notice.  ~ Hugh Morris

Let’s start with snowy owls. As their name impliesthese members o the owl amily are mostly whitewith some dark barring; immature and emale birdshave more bars than males.  And they are big: up to 28 inches tall with awingspan o five eet or more. Tat’s a bit larger thanthe more amiliar great horned owl.  Te snowy owl makes its home on the Arctic’streeless expanse. Yet periodically when its ood (miceand lemmings mostly) becomes scarce some owls fly

south ofen to areas that resemble their tundra home, like prairies and coastal dunes.  Tere’s not much or coastal dunes in Montanabut we have lots o prairie. So on those bitter winterdays when olks say Montana looks like rozen tundraat least one creature must think it lo oks pretty inviting, just like home.  Unlike the occasional snowy owl visitor, our most visible and common winter raptor may be the rough-legged hawk.  Te rough-legged hawk nests north o us romAlaska across Canada. When it patrols our prairiesin winter searching or mice and small animals, it’san easy bird to spot: eathered legs down to the toes,a broad band o brown across the belly and black

patches on the underside o each wrist, or bend o thewings.  Tis hawk settles into its Montana winter territoryby November, sometimes earlier, and leaves by March.  Hawks and owls are easy to spot compared to ourmost overlooked winged winter visitor.  Drive any gravel road in the winter and you willrequently encounter and scatter a flock o small, drabbirds. Tose little brown, white and black creaturesare usually snow buntings, eeding on weed and grainseeds.  According to the Audubon Society Encyclopediao North American Birds, the snow bunting canwithstand temperatures o minus 50, burrow in thesnow to keep warm and even loves to bathe in the

snow. Loves it!  Te holiday season will be upon us soon bringingrelatives and other visitors. Tat brings to mind theAmerican philosopher Ben Franklin, who amouslysaid, “Guests, like fish, begin to smell afer three days.”  I you have holiday guests that stay too long, suggest they make like snow buntings and bathe inthe snow. Winter visitors all.
