Known as the most beautiful beach in Italy by many,San Vito attracts those to it’s white sandy beach for the typical summer get-away. But San Vito has a lot more to offer. With it’s wide ample promenade that stretches from the Faro lighthouse to the west, all the way to Monte del Monaco bordering the Zingaro National Forest to the east, one can see and experience a lot of his-tory, nature, and locals willing to share their little piece of culture with you. While Joan and I drove the only road towards this precious town, we passed some of the prettiest countryside we had seen up to this point. We passed the marble-producing town of Marmo. The steep, rolling hillsides with grazing cattle gently gave way to the sea-level outskirts of San Vito. As we drove through, one of the places I was look-ing for was La Spiga bakery, owned by Caterina Catalano. She is from California, and moved to this gem over 20 years ago and is catering to locals as well as the many tourist who cruise slowly

through this sleepy “Radiator Springs”-like town. While Cathy was not in her shop at the time, we did manage to score a bag of some fig cookies. We were a little hungry, so as we continued our final drive to the shore, we scarfed a handful of those earthy nuggets. I can’t describe in words the utter delight we experienced with those cookies. We’ll leave it at that. LOL.

After checking into a hotel we headed over to the Mahi-mahi festival which we intended to visit. The town was colorfully decorated with the palate of blue and pink, while a huge tent was erected to house an afternoon tasting. While me in my steadicam, and Joan with her camera, we man-aged to cover the event quite thoroughly. Funny thing is, this festival is hyped up, not so much as the next week’s Couscous festival, we were a little under whelmed at the amount of effort exerted to arrange 150 people into an area, interview the chef, describe the dish, talk about the history, etc., blah, blah, blah...then when it came time to eat, I imagined this rush of waiters bringing waves and waves of food. No...one dish...of about three pieces of mahi-mahi ravioli...then everyone out. Huh? I just laughed...so did Joan.

Remember Chesapeake Seafood House? Or any of those all-you-can eat places. Al Dolfino restaurant appears that way from the outside, so we were a little apprehensive about grabbing lunch there. But we went in anyway. The menu must have had about a thousand items on it. I finally told the eager but impatient waiter to surprise us. We were hungry. Like a well choreographed dance, about ten minutes later a steady stream of dishes flowed out of the kitchen and landed on our table. OMG! What a tender, fresh, delicious feast! Go to Italy right now and tell them Johnny sent you.

Pete Camarrata is my new friend. He’s captain of a 4-hour charter company and took us on a cata-maran to the shores of Scopello. We passed the Zingaro forest and dropped anchor so we could jump overboard and swim. Hot weather, cool water, get out, food and wine waiting for you. It can’t get any better than that! Pete knows his stuff, and he was one of the nicest people we met in Italy. Pete, thank you for your friendship, and thank you for sharing your life-story with us. We will never forget you...and we are coming back, next time to spend more time with you!

F rankie Dettori, MBE is an Italian horse racing jockey and celebrity. He is the son of Sardinian jockey, Gianfranco Dettori, who was a prolific winner in Italy. Also

known as real name Lanfranco Dettori in non-English speaking countries. Dettori’s first experience with horses was at the age of twelve and his father bought him a Palomino pony. This had some impact on him, as he rode the horse often. In 1990 Dettori became the first teenager since Lester Piggott to ride 100 winners in one season. His first win came at the age of 16 in Turin in November 1986, while his first victory in Britain was the following June. Further success fol-lowed, with numerous winners in Group 1 races. On September 28, 1996 he achieved the feat of winning all seven races on a single day at Ascot Racecourse. Dettori is the retained jockey for the Godolphin racing stables, and is well-known for his distinctive “flying dismounts”. An ardent Anglophile, he thrives on English culture: Dettori is an avid Arsenal F.C. supporter. He has a line of frozen Italian food. In 2004, he opened a restaurant Frankie’s Bar and Grill in Putney, London with renowned chef Marco Pierre White.

Granita

Imagine the look on everyone’s face, after serving them a hot meal and putting this icy treat on the table to cleanse their palate. I did this at my last pizza party, and everyone was delighted.DirectionsCut the top off of the flat end of the pomegranite. Pull the pomegranite apart over a bowl. Gently pull out the seeds using your fingers to roll them away from their yellow nest. Now comes the fun part. Using a potato masher with octogonal holes, press the seed. I cover the bowl on both sides of the masher with Saran wrap because those seeds spray. Continue for 5-10 minutes until you are sure you got most of them to squish. Using a collander, strain the seeds into another bowl, pressing and scrap-ing firmly with the back of a wooden spoon. Put the seeds back in their original bowl and add the filtered water. Stir, smash again and strain one final time into the pure juice bowl. Add the sugar and lemon juice...stir to dissolve.Pour into a stainless steel loaf pan. Cover with Saran wrap. Every 20 minutes scrape the ice crystals back into the middle. After about 2-4 hours, depending on the temperature of your freezer, you should have an icy, flaking, delicious creation that will amaze everyone! Enjoy—John Cangemi
