patternsNavigating change in a strategic way By Mark Leonard, General Manager

As 2010 ends, the media industry continues to be rocked by change. Within public broadcasting, KCET, the flagship PBS station in the Los Angeles market, will disassociate itself from PBS on Jan. 1. KCET will operate as a non-commercial independent station without the benefit of

PBS programs like NOVA, Sesame Street or PBS NewsHour. We’re not talking about a small town station—this is the second largest television market in the country! According to statements from CEO Al Jerome, KCET was no longer able to afford PBS dues of $7 million annually.

At Illinois Public Media, we pay a much smaller fee of about $800,000 each year to PBS. That’s a hefty portion of our annual operating budget, yet we continue to believe the fee is a bargain for the range of outstanding programs it entitles us to broadcast. As budgets become tight and the ex-pectations of the audience change, we continually re-evaluate our priorities and program choices.

We spent the last several months developing a revised strategic plan for Illinois Public Media. We’re not planning any changes as radical as KCET’s; rather we are focusing on better know-ing our community and our audiences. Our plan details steps to increase the reliability and quality of our broadcast signals, expand the reach of our programming and deepen partnerships within our community and within the University of Illinois. The plan addresses the need for new sources of funding for our locally created content and increasing the diversity of our content. A recurring theme in the document is our need to develop and distribute programming across all available platforms: broadcast, web, mobile devices and to other media. We will be sharing more details about our strategic plan over the coming months.

In this issue of Patterns, you’ll discover the special programs we’re offering during our December TV Winterfest fundraising campaign. Be assured, your continued support of Illinois Public Media is greatly appreciated. Your investment provides the stable financial base that allows WILL to preserve its core programming while seeking new ways of better serving you. Thank you and happy holidays!

Glowing hearths. Shining trees. A gentle snowfall. And voices raised in song.

In plenty of time to get you in the holiday spirit, six of central Illinois’ best a cappella singing groups join forces to present an evening of unaccompanied music on WILL-TV at 7 pm Wednesday, Dec. 1 (repeated at 7 pm Monday, Dec. 6; 9:30 pm Friday, Dec. 24; and 3 pm Saturday, Dec. 25).

Taped in the WILL-TV studio decked out in snowflakes and bathed in soft blue light, the one-hour program features Prairie Blend Quartet, Champaign-Urbana; the Danville Chorus of Sweet Adelines; the Rip Chords, University of Illinois; Sound Celebration Chorus of Springfield; Champaign-Urbana Sweet Adelines; and the Tone Rangers from Millikin University in Decatur.

“Our successful a cappella program in March featured college show choruses, but we decided that we wanted to open up our next performance show to barbershop groups, too,” said David Thiel, WILL-TV program director who is producing the program during the Winterfest fund drive.

And this time the program isn’t a competition, just performances of 20 holiday selections, including “Mary, Did You Know?,” “Santa Baby,” “Go Tell It On the Mountain,” “The Christmas Song,” “Let It Snow,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Carol of the Bells,” “What are You Doing New Years Eve?,” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.”

“It’s a way for us to showcase local talent on our air and also entertain our viewers with amazing holiday music,” David said.

WILL production greets the season

Don’t miss three episodes of insight and happenings at Possum Lodge when WILL-TV features a special Red Green marathon beginning at 8 pm Saturday, Dec. 11. Plus, Red (Steve Smith) is planning a virtual visit to WILL via Skype—trading personal quips and sharing advice live with members of the Winterfest pledge crew in our TV studio.

Documenting Tim Nugent’s legacyTim Nugent’s creativity and tenacity enabled thousands of disabled people to graduate from college at the University of Illinois, providing a model that transformed the way colleges around the nation treated disabled students.

Breaking Down Disability Barriers: The Legacy of Tim Nugent, a new radio documentary by Urbana University High School students, airs at 2:06 pm Dec. 24, on WILL-AM 580. “He saw the potential all these people had. He believed they could do great things that other people never saw,” said Uni student Sheela Gogula, who produced the program along with Katherine Floess.

Uni High teacher Janet Morford and Illinois Public Media’s Dave Dickey directed the project. Students from the classes of 2011 and 2014 conducted the interviews.

An inside look at becoming clergy Independent Lens will present The Calling at 8 pm Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 20 and 21, on WILL-TV. The four-hour documentary series follows seven dedicated young Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim Americans on a dramatic journey as they prepare to become professional clergy.

The Calling follows these students as they wrestle with the sacrifices they’ve made, debate theology and philosophy, learn to deliver sermons, perform their first wed-dings and funerals and counsel people in crisis. We also get to know them as ordinary young people at the crossroads of their lives, struggling with doubt and fear, dating, family life and the myriad challenges of becoming adults.

As this new generation of religious leaders prepares to take its place in our society, their unfolding stories explore some of the current issues facing America’s religious communities.

Discovering the genius of Glenn GouldOther documentaries about Glenn Gould, a profoundly enigmatic musical poet, were often sidetracked by his eccentricities. Now, through his recordings and interviews with those who knew him best—his lover, his manager, his personal assistant, his collaborators—American Masters reveals the passion and inspiration that gave rise to the genius of this iconic, but intensely private, musician. Don’t miss Glenn Gould: Genius Within at 8 pm Monday, Dec. 27.

Keeping art secretAn eccentric Welsh village learns that London’s National Gallery is storing its entire art collection in a nearby mine during the museum’s renovations—leading to curious encounters between the village locals and the gallery’s urbane, lovelorn curator. Trevor Eve (David Copperfield) and Eve Myles (Little Dorrit) star in Masterpiece Contemporary’s presentation of Framed (8 pm Dec. 26), a gentle comedy based on Frank Cottrell Boyce’s best-selling novel.

An in-depth discussion about MuslimsIn part one (What Muslims Think) of the two-part Who Speaks for Islam?, host Ray Suarez interviews author Reza Aslan (No god But God; How to Win a Cosmic War) and Dalia Mogahed, director of the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies and co-author of Who Speaks for Islam?: What a Billion Muslims Really Think. The roundtable discussion addresses the questions many are pondering—Why is the Muslim world so anti-American? Who are the extremists? Is democracy something Muslims really want?—with fascinating and often counterintuitive results. The program airs at 9 pm Dec. 23.

Then in the second part of the series, Muslims on Screen, Suarez interviews actors, writers and producers about Hollywood’s ongoing evolution of depicting Muslims in American film and television, from stereotypical evil terrorists toward a more nuanced depiction of a range of complex characters. It airs at 9 pm Dec. 30.
