December 2011/January 2012 Skywriter Volume XVI Issue VIII From the Principal . . . Hello Skyview Community, First trimester is over. Students and teachers alike have been working hard in and out of the classroom. I have thoroughly enjoyed walking through classrooms seeing students engaged in the learning. We are on our way to making a difference in the lives of our students. Report cards will be arriving soon if you do not have parent portal. There are a few changes this year; the letter grade that you receive represents your child’s learning. We have added comments that address effort, behavior and being prepared for class. The intent is to communicate the intangibles that do impact learning but are not directly related to what your child has learned. We are starting something new for all of our students. It’s called TOPS (Targeted Opportunities for Personal Success). This gives our teachers an opportunity to build stronger relationships with students that are not in their class. It also gives us the opportunity to strengthen our school community. These free opportunities include many before and after school classes and clubs designed to help Skyview reach its site goal of improvement in Reading and Math on the MCAs, as well as to promote student growth. TOPS classes are designed to: o Support methods and instructional strategies that are effective in strengthening the core curriculum o Increase critical reading skills, strategies and comprehension o Encourage reading for enjoyment o Build basic skill areas: reading, math, and other academic areas o Promote self concept o Increase motivation The students have been given flyers for 13 six-week classes that start on December 12. The teachers are equally excited to help students improve academically and socially. There is much to be celebrated from the first trimester. We will be celebrating our academic accomplishments on December 22nd from 1:45 to 2:15 p.m. with an academic pep fest. From the Principal . . TOPS classes are designed to:

o Support methods and instructional strategies that are effective in strengthening the core curriculum

o Increase critical reading skills, strategies and comprehension

o Encourage reading for enjoyment

o Build basic skill areas: reading, math, and other academic areas

o Promote self concept

o Increase motivation

The students have been given flyers for 13 six-week classes that start on December 12. The teachers are equally excited to help students improve academically and socially. There is much to be celebrated from the first trimester. We will be celebrating our academic accomplishments on December 22nd from 1:45 to 2:15 p.m. with an academic pep fest.

Skyview’s AVID Program

Advancement Via Individual Determination is not only the

acronym for the AVID program, it is also the mantra. AVID is a voluntary program that accepts only motivated students who are willing to work hard to prepare for advanced high school classes and, ultimately, college. The program began in District 622 last year and now includes 7th- and 8th-grade classes at all three middle schools. The goals of the AVID class are to strengthen students’ reading, writing, and problem solving skills, and to help them develop the study and organizational skills needed to succeed in rigorous high school and college classes. All Skyview teachers have been trained in AVID instructional strategies and more than 15 Skyview teachers have participated in the AVID Summer Institute or Path trainings. AVID strategies such as Cornell notetaking and higher-level questioning are being used with all students at Skyview. The AVID elective class itself is not the right fit for all students. AVID targets kids who are in the academic “middle”, those with average to high test scores and B/C grades who are capable of doing more. AVID students must demonstrate strong motivation, determination, and a willingness to work hard. Students who are invited to apply to AVID are not only required to meet these criteria, but they must also have strong teacher recommendations and go through a personal interview with the AVID committee. As part of the AVID program, students are also scheduled into an advanced class, either accelerated math or enriched language arts. AVID provides college tutors to help support the students’ work in the advanced classes. AVID was started in a San Diego high school more than 30 years ago as a way to increase the performance of underachieving students and prepare them for college. Over the years it has grown to serve more than 400,000 students in 48 states and 16 countries around the world. Of the 22,210 AVID 2010 seniors who reported their plans, 91.3% intended to attend a postsecondary institution. Many of our own district’s AVID students are on a path to be the first in their families to go to college!
