“Who we are” ... when you log on to the MAC website (mac-stl.org) the first thing you read is: “In 1903, a St. Louis institution was born. Since its inception, the Missouri Athletic Club has endured and thrived by remaining committed to the vision of the original founders: to be the premier athletic, social and dining club for business, professional and civic leaders and their families in the St. Louis area.”

I am pleased to report that the MAC recently received an important affirmation - that the Club continues to meet the lofty goals set by the gentlemen who formed our Club more than a century ago. The MAC has once again been awarded the Platinum Club of America award. The honor recognizes the MAC as one of the top private clubs in the United States. Out of 5,000 private clubs nationwide, we are ranked in the top 4%. There are five key categories that make up this ranking: 1. Quality of Membership 2. Tradition & Culture 3. Amenities 4. Governance 5. Quality of Management and Staff.

The combined efforts of members, staff and the Board should be congratulated! The award is presented by Club Leaders Forum every three years. This marks the fifth consecutive time the MAC has received this prestigious award. We all should be proud to be members of the MAC! Now is the perfect time to show off your Club to potential members in your family, business and social circles. This type of recognizable honor does not happen overnight. The efforts of long-standing members, like yourselves, are instrumental in these results.

A big reason the Club has endured and thrived for so long is that there is a long tradition of keeping what works well, while identifying areas that need to be improved in order to enhance the experience for current members, and help attract new members: That is why we recently conducted a member survey. It was an opportunity to evaluate how we are doing, and identify areas of improvement. The feedback you provided will be instrumental

as we chart the course for the future direction of the MAC.

Long Range Planning Chairman Chris Michalak will be meeting with his committee and General Manager Wally Smith, to start a game plan for the key takeaways from the survey. In the survey, the two highest-rated reasons you stated for joining the MAC are Fitness and Dining. It is funny how little things have changed in 109-years, since the founding members first came up with the reasons to start the MAC. Simply stated, our capital expenditures and key staff hires should focus on improving these two main areas. Some recent staff additions have helped these departments. Chef Grant Higgs is leading our West dining operation. In athletics, Fitness Director Lisa Tennenbaum, Sports Specific Clinics/Workouts Coordinator (tailored to specific sports) Paul Helfrich and Jr. Tennis Director Kenny Powell have strengthened our team at West. There have also been a couple of key hires Downtown. Zach Freeman will lead our overnight room sales efforts, and Diane Rackovan has been brought on board to help our communications and marketing efforts.

A few of the areas identified for improvements were continuing to upgrade fitness equipment and work out areas at both of our locations, plus Bar/Dining Facilities at West. Also, enhanced communication from Club management to membership was also an area you asked for improvement. I hope you find General Manager Wally Smith’s monthly Cherry Diamond column, which provides the operations perspective, to be helpful. I know my fellow Board members are ready to hear from all members. When you see us around either of our great locations, feel free to give us your feedback on how to make our Club an even better place. We didn’t become a Platinum Club by resting on our laurels.

The By-Law amendment ending Life Dues for Past Presidents recently passed by our membership (see results on page 23). Please thank the 33 Past Presidents next time you see them for their leadership and dedication to the MAC. These Past

Presidents were given this Life Membership by the members after their year of service as President of the Club. This group should not be perceived as having asked for a free handout, but as a recipient of long-standing tradition that was given by the members. The current membership has voted to no longer give Life Dues. Please understand and realize this should not reflect negatively on the any Past Presidents, personally, from this past gift of service from the membership. The Past Presidents continue to support the Club financially, and by giving their time to the Heritage Foundation, Preservation Foundation and various committees.

Finally, this month’s magazine cover featuring Santa and Mrs. Claus is not only intended to draw attention to the holiday season, but also to put the spotlight on an important Club event. Recently, I mailed each member a letter highlighting the second annual Gala Dinner and Auction on Jan. 26, 2013. Please consider your donations for the silent and live auction items that fellow members will enjoy bidding on. Also, please consider what sponsorship levels you or your business will contribute for this first-class evening at the MAC. Tables are starting to fill up, so don’t get left out in the dark for this “Bright Lights” event. Eighty percent of the monies raised will help with the needed capital items I mentioned earlier, along with others deemed priorities by staff and the Board. The remaining 20 percent will be allocated to the MAC Children’s Charity Foundation and the Preservation Foundation which helps to maintain our Downtown Clubhouse’s infrastructure needs.

I invite you and your family to share a happy holiday season with your friends at the MAC. From the spectacular Christmas tree and decorations in the lobby of the Downtown Clubhouse, to the traditional family events, a visit to the MAC during Christmas and the New Year is always memorable!

Wine of the Month The December wine of the month is the Brotherhood Riesling. This 2010 presidential wine features notes of slight citrus and tropical fruit, and is light to medium bodied. It has hints of slate and minerals with a dry palate. Brotherhood Riesling can be enjoyed by the glass for $7 or shared with friends for $25 per bottle.

Thank you, thank you and thank you!

As you know, we completed our budget process and began our new fiscal year as of Sept. 1.

We worked very hard to identify opportunities for savings, but more importantly, for growth via our three Buckets. Our team developed the annual operating and capital plans without a scheduled dues or fee increase, as the target and goal - Now, it’s time to make it hap-pen. I’m happy to report that the first two months have us strong-ly ahead of plan, thus initiating the opening sentence above: Thank you!

Our Bucket theme is starting to take hold and gaining some trac-tion. Our Rooms and Food and Beverage revenues are leading the way, thanks to you, your support and use of the Club. New memberships are lagging behind plan, but the good news is we have implemented exciting newprograms, and people, for you to brag about to your friends and associates. Plus, we have “Simplified and Energized” the Platinum Partnership membership program. This may be the best membership program I have ever seen, or been a part of, and I believe it’s our ticket going forward.

We don’t need the “deal of the day” like I’ve seen so many other clubs employ. This Platinum Partnership program allows you to decrease your

monthly dues by $100 per month, forever. So, turn your friends on to one of the best Platinum clubs in the country, and take advantage of this tremendous value proposition. Our Associate members have especially loved these improve-ments! If you’re interested in learning more (I can’t believe that you wouldn’t be), let us know and we’ll be right here to help you with any questions.

Speaking of questions, last month I tossed one out there asked by one our long time members. He said, “Wally, what happens if every member has one more lunch next month, with a guest, at the Club?”

Well, that’s easy! We add 4,600 lunch covers to our business and bring in $59,570 + in unplanned revenue. But better yet, every member also gets to expose the MAC to a potential member/friend/associate, and our next month’s plan is exceeded once again. So, here’s the challenge: Starting Jan. 1, it’s, “Meet Me at the MAC” month! Allow me to take it one step further, and ask that you please make one of your New Year’s resolutions (the one you’re

going to keep) to be using and enjoying your Club just one more time every month next year, and bring a new guest each month.

That’s January’s challenge, but let’s not forget the holidays, which are upon us, and the office parties, family dinners, Sunday school celebrations, etc. And, next year we celebrate the Club’s 25th anniversary of women joining the Club. Our Woman’s Initiative committee is working hard to line up all kinds of fun and celebrations - Stay tuned!

And lastly, the corner stone of our beginning and our middle name is Athletics. Embrace your health and commit to get healthier in 2013, and using/enjoying the MAC more often. Lisa Tennenbaum is the new Fitness Manager at the West Clubhouse. She comes to the MAC from Wellbridge Athletic Club and Spa in Clayton, Mo., where she worked as the Group Fitness and Pilates Coordinator for over two years. Lisa is certified in multiple group fitness and training programs. She is certified in Aqua Fitness and STOTT Pilates, and has worked in the fitness industry for many years. She worked as an instructor and trainer for the Jewish Community Center, YMCA, Club Fitness and 24 Hour Fitness. She is ACE and AFAA certified. Lisa holds a master’s degree from Webster University in St. Louis. “My role will be increasing the amount of fitness industry trends offered at the MAC,” Tennenbaum said. “We will give the members the latest and greatest class offerings.” In addition, Lisa will be coordinating class schedules and recruiting instructors.Lisa wants members to share her enthusiasm for fitness, by ensuring that each class they take is not only beneficial to their overall health and fitness goals, but is also an enjoyable experience. “Our trainers are rock stars,” Lisa said. “We enjoy watching members not only reaching their fitness goals, but also their enthusiasm about their overall health and well-being transform.”Lisa is also training members, and teaching group fitness classes at West. On Friday, March 1, some of the Missouri Athletic Club’s most distinguished athletic figures will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. A dinner will be held in their honor in the Missouri Room. The Hall of Fame Committee reviewed nominations from MAC members and recently selected the 2013 class of inductees. Bob Gronemeyer is being inducted for handball. Gronemeyer competed in the sport over three decades and won several doubles championships. Tom O’Toole Jr. is entering the Hall of Fame for golf. The United States Golf Association Vice President has been instrumental in growing the sport at the Club.Tom O’Toole Sr. is entering the Hall for Distinguished Service. He played a key role in the acquisition of MAC West while serving on the Board. The induction of the O’Tooles will mark the first time that a father and son have entered the MAC Hall of Fame. Brian Rodgers will enter the MAC Hall for basketball. He has been a key member on the MAC traveling team and

has been on several March Madness championship teams. An outstanding 3-point shooter, Rodgers has received the Bill Daake Award in recognition of outstanding sportsmanship. D. Scot Hunsaker will receive the “Dan Barks Award.” Named for the long-time MAC Athletic Director, the award honors an individual who participated in sports in the Club as a child and has gone on to make a mark on athletics as an adult. Hunsaker is the president of Counsilman-Hunsaker where he has been involved with the planning and design of more than 850 pools around the world, including at the Olympic Games. The MAC Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1993 to honor those members of the Club who distinguished them-selves in the field or in the development of athletics at the Club. Portraits of each Hall of Famer are on display in the Sportsman’s Club on the Fourth Floor.

Shape Up Through the MAC’s Biggest Loser ContestThe only thing you have to lose is weight

With the holiday season approaching, that means plenty of parties and lavish feasts. For many people, all of that celebrating brings with it a few extra, unwanted pounds. So what follows are the New Year’s resolutions to get in shape and lose weight. At the MAC, the athletic facilities always see a spike in attendance following Jan. 1, but some people have a difficult time sticking with their New Year’s resolutions. If that has been you in the past, try a new strategy to keep you motivated to meet your fitness goals. Maybe you need a little competition to help give you that extra incentive. Inspired by the NBC Show the Biggest Loser, in January the MAC will be hosting its own weight loss contest. Throughout the pro-cess, weight loss experts will provide direction that has been proven to get results. The following are the highlights of the program:

• Dates: Jan. 16- March 23, 2013• Deadline to sign up is Monday, Jan. 7. • Cost is $125 per person and includes beginning and ending health assessments, six 1-hour nutrition seminars, taught by MAC

Holiday Sports Camps Keep the kids busy and active this winter break by signing them up for the Holiday Sports Camps at the West Clubhouse. They will enjoy a day of physical activity and fun, and you can have some time to yourself to finish up shopping, prep for Christmas dinner or return gifts after the holidays are over. The camps will be held Wednesdays - Fridays, Dec. 19, through Jan. 4.

Your child can choose to participate in the morning session from 9 a.m. to Noon, the afternoon session from 1 - 4 p.m. or the all day session from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., which includes lunch. Slam Dunk with the Winter Basketball Leagues

Kids, join the junior tennis program on Saturday, Dec. 8 for a tennis open house and exhibition. All kids are welcome to participate in a demonstration of “Quick Start Tennis” for children 10 and under. There will be a clinic drill demonstration for children ages 11 – 14. In addition, there will be fun games to develop tennis skills for chil-dren of all ages! Serves will be clocked by radar, so kids can time their serving speed. High performance juniors will play exhibition matches. All are welcome to attend the junior tennis open house. Tennis pros will be on hand to answer any questions and give player assessments.

Join the Ladies’ Interclub team, and have the opportunity to compete in doubles against other area teams. Ladies Interclub is available for participants at all levels, and matches are played on most Fridays. On Thursday nights, the action shifts to the West Clubhouse for the Open League beginning Jan. 10. There are no age restrictions, and you are welcome to play in more than one league.

The Platinum Partnership recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. More than 276 members have become Platinum Partners. Increasingly, businesses are experiencing the ben-efits of the Platinum Partnership. Redbird Carriers, Inc. owner and past-President Mark Belew has sponsored three platinum partners to the Club, who also happen to be his employees. Belew pays the dues as a benefit to his staff. With the middle name of the MAC being ‘athletic,’ and with most of our upper management team deeming athlet-ics to be an important part of their daily lives, the MAC is a perfect fit as a very desired employee benefit,” Belew said. Brian Hayes, Jr. and Dack Ledbetter are Platinum Partners. Belew and Tom Hartenbach Platinum Partners; they all use the Club personally and for business needs. Redbird Carriers, just eight blocks from the Downtown Clubhouse, and now with over 10 locations, is expanding nationwide. New employees and associates are required to train in St. Louis, and are also required to stay at the MAC while in town. “Most times, their first impression of our firm is upon check in at the MAC Front Desk, and subsequent facilities tour before arriving at our office,” Belew said. “It gives us immediate credibility, as well as a great place to enjoy lunches and dinners with them during their two-to-three-day stays.” Redbirds gets a table each year for the Boxing match and Jack Buck Awards, and sponsors teams into the Golf Classic. They host business clients at those events. “It’s a

nice bonus for them,” Belew said.The Redbird team also uses the Club for personal recreation. Hayes lives downtown, and uses the Fifth Floor three – five days per week. Hayes is also involved in the Golf Club and is looking forward to the next golf season. An avid platform tennis player, Hayes loves the platform tennis court on the roof of the Downtown Clubhouse. While he’s the only plat-form tennis player on the Redbirds team, he brings guests to the Club to play. Dack stops by the Downtown Clubhouse to workout before work, and also enjoys the locker rooms. “Sometimes, when you have an event to go to at night, you need somewhere to change and shower,” Ledbetter said. “The MAC is perfect for this - It’s close to the office and has great facilities.”The group also comes to the Club before downtown sporting events. Hartenbach lives in West County and utilizes the West Clubhouse. “I have been reacquainted with college friends and cousins, whom I didn’t realize were members of the Club,” Hartenbach said. “It’s nice to see them around.”Hartenbach and his wife Diane have two children, Phillip and Hallie, who plan on attending summer sports camps next year. “The whole family can enjoy West; it’s great for the kids.” Whether it is an off-site business meeting, hosting guests in overnight guest rooms, or a game of platform tennis, hav-ing employee memberships to the Club is beneficial to all.

Catch Soccer’s Shooting Stars The MAC Hermann Trophy will be Presented to College Soccer’s Best on Jan. 11St. Louis is regarded as the soccer capital of the United States, so it is only fitting that the Missouri Athletic Club is home to the top individual honor in the sport. On Friday, Jan. 11, find out who will be recognized as soccer’s next rising young star at the MAC Hermann Trophy Banquet. The MAC has been home to college soccer’s version of the Heisman Trophy since 1986. Over the years, some of the biggest names in American soccer have come to the Club to claim the prestigious crystal soccer ball trophy, which is presented annually to the top male and female collegiate soccer players in the United States. The trophy represents the highest individual achievement in the sport. The jerseys of the past winners like Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Claudio Reyna and Alexi Lalas are on permanent display in the Sportsman’s Club. All Division I soccer coaches will get to vote for the award in December. The top three male and female finalists will be invited to the MAC for the banquet. Make plans now to be a part of this

celebration of soccer. Experience the excitement and the drama at the press conference when the winners are announced. Enjoy a fabulous meal and an outstanding event program. Each year, the MAC partners with the Rotary Club of St. Louis to honor men and women who have served our country at a special Veterans Day commemoration. The event was highlighted by guest speaker RADM William A. ‘Andy’ Brown, Director, Strategy, Policy, Programs, and Logistics, J4/5, U.S. TransportationCommand, Scott Air Force Base, Ill. Other highlights of the afternoon included the posting of the colors by the Cleveland Junior Naval Academy, NJROTC Color Guard, military exhibits and music by the Scott Air Force Base Band of Mid-America. A special ceremony was held to honor those veterans who are no longer with us. Governor Judith Hanses served as master of ceremonies. Awards were presented to Pat Tornatore, Carol Adams, Beth Fowler and Bank of America for their support of veterans. This year’s event included special recognition of the “MAC Honored Veteran of the Year” award. Technical Sergeant Sir Charles Rohde United States Army, Retired, was this year’s Honored Veteran. Rohde is a WWII veter-an and has been a resident of St. Louis since 1922. On June 30, 2011, he received the Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur – the Legion of Honor award, bestowing on him the title of Knight. It is France’s highest honor, and recipients are named only by decree signed by the President of France. The award is in recognition of his efforts to liberate France, particularly his actions during D-Day, where he won a Bronze Star for valor. He was a Sergeant in the 467th AAA AW Battalion, running anti-aircraft on D-Day. The event concluded with the band playing rousing renditions of the songs from each branch of the military. As each song played, members in attendance who served in each branch stood to be recognized.

The Rod and Gun Club won the Interclub Shoot on Friday, Oct. 19 at Strathalbyn Farms Club. This was the third year of the held the event, and the first year the MAC won. The MAC team hit 412/500 targets, beating Strathalbyn by four targets and The Racquet Club by 23. The winning team members were John McCadden, Todd Keske, Jake Curtis, Steve Lohr, and Chris Hyams. James Schwetye, Reno Cova, Talmage and Anna Newton also participated.

Courts 1 & 2 were packed withmembers and guests wanting a piece of the action on the courts. Junior Tennis Director Kenny Powell face off against Lance Vodicka to raise money for the MAC Charitable Society for Children. Lance Vodicka overcame Kenny Powell 8 – 6 in their singles match. Following their match-up, MAC tennis pros Scott Stutz, Mac McDonald, Max Shapiro and Patrick McNally played a match.

Representatives from SouthSide Early Childhood Center, Our Little Haven and Walker Scottish Rite Clinic were on hand to share information about their organizations. As the evening wrapped up, $1,502 was collected by the Charitable Society for Children, to be split among the three charities. Several members also left with fabulous prizes raffled off throughout the evening. Big thanks go out to all those who donated to this year’s charities and tennis participants!

The lower parking lot at the West Clubhouse was filled with festively-decorated cars, candy and dozens of kids in costumes. The annual Trunk-R-Treat festivities were a huge hit with mem-bers and their guests. Before feasting on a deliciously spooky spread in the Stan Musial Grill, kids played Halloween-themed games and rocked out to tunes by DJ Joe. Following dinner, there were s’mores right off the fire and more dancing. Just as dusk set, trunk-r-treating began. Princesses, Pirates, animals and superheroes made their way from car to car collecting sweet treats. Awards were given to the best-decorated cars. The MAC has earned the distinction of a Platinum Club of America.

The MAC has received this distinction five times in the past 15 years. The honor recognizes the MAC as one of the top private clubs in the United States. Out of 5,000 private clubs nationwide, the MAC is ranked in the top 4%.

“Missouri Athletic Club’s perceived excellence of services to membership, quality of club facilities, heritage, and enlightened leadership from manage-ment and Board has been recognized in a just-completed survey conducted every three years by Club Leader’s Forum,” Club Leader’s Forum Publisher John Sibbald said.
