KISLEV-TEVET 5773 DECEMBER 2012 3
The story is told of
Napoleon as he
was fleeing the Rus-
sian Army. He dismissed his personal guards
because they made him too obvious. He ran
into a Jewish tailor’s shop and convinced the
tailor to hide him. While hidden under a pile
of rags, Russian soldiers frantically searched
every nook and cranny for the French Emperor.
After what seemed like an eternity, the sol-
diers left. Napoleon came out of hiding and
turned to the Jewish tailor to offer him a re-
ward. “For saving me from certain death I will
grant you three of your heart’s desires.”
Being a simple man, the tailor replied to
the Emperor, “Well, Your Highness, my roof
has a very bad leak. If you could arrange to
have it fixed, that would really make a differ-
ence!”
“Consider it done. But is that it???”
“Well, across the lane, another Jewish tailor
has opened shop. Could you arrange to have
him move to the opposite side of town? The
competition is too great.”
“I am the Emperor—nothing is too much
for me. But these requests are beneath my
dignity. You are entitled to anything!”
“Well what I really want to know is how did
it feel to be hiding and in fear of your life, not
knowing what would happen next?”
Napoleon was so incensed at the apparent
slight to his power that he ordered the Jew
arrested and sentenced to the firing squad.
For hours the poor tailor awaited his fate.
At dusk, he was dragged to the firing squad.
Napoleon, himself attending, said, “Ready…
Aim…” and then he ordered the soldiers to
lower their rifles. “You wanted to know what
it felt like. Now you know.”
This article is being written for our newslet-
ter just a few days following Hurricane Sandy.
Many of us have gone through so much, in-
cluding days without power and feeling di-
connected to our “normal” lives. Some of our
homes have been beaten up pretty badly and
we, ourselves, are feeling beaten up by this
storm. We, who stood in the path of this
storm, know now that fear of not knowing
what might happen next. So it is about hurri-
canes that I devote this article. You know that
hurricanes are an act of G-d. You know how
I know? I have that in writing. It says so in
article 4, subparagraph 3, of my homeowner’s
insurance! It probably says that in your insur-
ance policy, too.
In one of the most famous prayers of the
High Holiday services, the prayer called Un-
etaneh Tokef, we are reminded of the existen-
tial question, “Who will live and who will not,
who by fire and who by water...?” Many in our
area have lost virtually everything they own,
some have lost loved ones. We pray for those
whose lives have been made so difficult by
these great storms.
Hospitality is one of the foundations of
the life of the Jewish people. It started with
Abraham, who set up his tent, his home, and
left the sides of the tent open at all times.
The midrash explains that this was so he and
Sarah could be on the lookout for anyone who
might need a place to rest, to stay, to come
in and have something to eat, and to enjoy
some companionship. Many of us followed in
the footsteps of Abraham and Sarah, open-
ing our doors to others in need, just as our
synagogue itself opened its doors during the
day—not only as a place to recharge the bat-
teries in phones and computers, but also as a
place to recharge our connections with each
other. And when necessary, we opened our
doors at night to those from our synagogue
needing a warm place to sleep.
Now that the hurricane has passed, we
have exited our homes to examine the dam-
age and see what needs to be fixed. We now
know how it feels not to know what may hap-
pen next. Hurricanes remind us that there
are things beyond our control, and no mat-
ter how much we think we are prepared, no
one can know, as the proverb says, “Ma yoled
yom”—what today will bring. That is why our
tradition reminds us how important it is to
live each day with purpose and joy. Hurricanes
remind us that we can’t do it alone, that com-
munity matters. Hurricanes remind us to focus
on what is really important.
The Torah tells the story of the proph-
et Elijah. He was forced to run away from
Queen Jezebel. He flees his home, like one
would flee from a hurricane, to seek protec-
tion elsewhere. Without food and water, he
is approached by an angel who feeds him
“bread baked on hot coals”—emergency ra-
tions—and he takes refuge in a cave, a cold
dark place. It is then that a great wind comes
and “breaks even the earth and mountains.”
But says the Torah, G-d was not in the mighty
wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but
G-d wasn’t in the earthquake. And after the
earthquake a fire. But G-d wasn’t in the fire.
And after the fire… ”a still small voice.”
This is how G-d speaks to us. G-d speaks
from the little and beautiful things of life.
G-d speaks to us through life, through having
each other to lean on. It is how we pick up
the pieces and react, after the storm. How we
fix that which is broken.
Hurricanes may come and hurricanes may
go. Let’s hope not so often. But now we must
learn from life. Let us therefore remember
that G-d lives in each of ourselves as that Still
Small Voice that ensures that the little things
of everyday life will be a blessing.
(This article is based on the Dvar Torah pre-
sented by Rabbi Nesson on the Shabbat follow-
ing Hurricane Sandy.)

After the Storm
4 KISLEV-TEVET 5773 DECEMBER 2012
This refrain from
Peter, Paul and
Mary’s Hanukkah
classic brings joy to
our hearts each time
we hear it and can’t help but sing along. Just
last month, however, many of us were pleading:
Please let the lights come on!!! Sandy may be
gone but her aftermath will remain in New York
and New Jersey for many months to come.
The story of the “miracle of Hanukkah” comes
to us from the pages of the Talmud (Tractate
Shabbat). Maimonides (Rambam) expanded on
this story in the 12th century as follows:
“During the period of the Second Temple, the
Greek kings issued harsh decrees against Israel;
they outlawed their religion, forbade them to
engage in the study of Torah… They entered
the Sanctuary and ravaged it, and defiled all
that had been ritually pure. But the priests of
Israel prevailed and delivered the people of Is-
rael from the hands of the Greeks. They entered
the Sanctuary and found only one jar of ritually
pure oil that was sufficient to burn only for one
day; but they lit the lights of the Menorah from
it for eight days…”
On Monday night, October 29, as the lights
went dark from Cape May to Fire Island, and
at almost every home in between, they never
were even dimmed at MJCBY. Were we fortu-
nate? Absolutely!! However, torn from the pag-
es of our Hanukkah story, we became that one
jar of oil that burned brightly for many of our
members for 8, 10, even 12 days. And yes, for
one family, even for a night.
We stayed open as our building became a
sanctuary of warmth, light, and comfort to doz-
ens of families through the almost two weeks of
recovery from Sandy. They came in to be warm
and to connect—not only their equipment, but
also to be with others who could offer support,
information, and just friendship.
On Friday night, November 2, we hosted 85
men, women, and children who had no power
for a Shabbat dinner that has become known in
the greater community as the “Hot Shabbat.”
Many thanks need to go out to the many
families that opened their homes to friends and
neighbors for meals, hot showers, and a place
to stay. Also to those families that generously
donated to allow the Friday night dinner to be
100 percent subsidized. Todah Rabah!!!
“Don’t let the light go out. It’s lasted for so
many years…”
But if the lights do go out, just remember
that the menschlichkeit of MJCBY is always
there for you.
Chag Sameach, Gerry

Beginning January 1, 2013, the pre-
ferred rates that members of our lo-
cal synagogues are offered will change.
Plots to members will cost $1200 each
regardless of how many plots are pur-
chased. This price includes permanent
maintenance. The price does not include
the cost of opening a grave nor the cost
of the stone and foundation.
Should you purchase plots before the
first of the year, the cost will be $700 each
for the first two plots, $900 each for the
third and fourth plots and $1200 each for
any plots after that. If you purchase two
plots before the New Year deadline, it will
save you $1000. This change has been an-
nounced in all three of our member con-
gregations: Congregation B’nai Israel in
Basking Ridge, Morristown Jewish Center-
Beit Yisrael, and Temple B’nai Or of Mor-
ristown.
The change does not affect those who
are not members or those who have an
open balance on their accounts.
Alise Ford, the cemetery administrator,
is happy to meet with members to help
them select plots. Please call (973) 543-
9740 to make an appointment. Obviously,
there are no appointments on Saturday
and appointments in bad weather will be
cancelled.
Also, if you already have plots but have
recently moved, now is a good time to call
Alise to update your mailing information
so that you can receive the annual news-
letter and notice of the Community Memo-
rial Service.

The holiday season always brings the
feeling of family and celebration! In
Jewish tradition we celebrate Hanukkah!
One of the miracles of Hanukkah was the
triumph of few over the might of many.
Hurricane Sandy had quite a might, but it
has inspired our teens (our few) to fight
back and make a difference. After two
months of successful programs where USY
hosted only our teens, we would like to
include our MJCBY community in a fund-
raiser for a cause. Saturday, December 8,
at 6:30 pm, USY will be hosting a Latke
Throwdown and Havdalah! If you think
you make the best latkes in town, bring
your “A” game and we’ll give you a skillet!
Come one! Come all! Cook, cheer, be en-
tertained! Be on the lookout for more de-
tails and flyers! Regionally, this month we
have our Membership Dance on Saturday,
December 15, and our USY International
Convention on December 20-27.
If you have questions, please feel free

Our amazing year in Kadima just con-
tinues to roll right along. We all had
an amazing time at our first Family Shab-

second to thank everyone who made the
night truly special. Kadima’s Iron Chef
also had an amazing turnout and we re-
ally had fun making deliciously interesting
pie! Kadima did what it could for those
who were in need of food in the trying
time we just experienced with Hurricane
Sandy, and a special thanks to all those
who helped by donating canned goods.
We have some amazing upcoming events
starting with the next regional event—Ice
Skating at Mennen Arena—on November
21, followed by the regional Shabbaton
November 30-December 1 in East Windsor!
Our next chapter event will be Hanukkah
Knight of Lights on Wednesday, December
12, right after religious school. Hope you
can all make it!

Hanukkah, the holiday of light, will be
upon us in just a week or so. One month
ago, Hurricane Sandy roared into New Jersey,
reminding us of the power of light. The power
for many of us was cut off for a week or more,
while other members of our community had
their internal light, their spirit squelched.
During the coldest of days, our Jewish com-
munity rallied. MJCBY opened its doors to all
who had no power and a steady flow of cof-
fee warmed our bodies and spirits. Members
opened their homes. Personally, we received
countless offers to have meals, do laundry,
or sleep over at homes with power. Our inner
lights burned a little brighter.
In Morristown, the Saturday after Sandy
devastated New Jersey, the Market Street
Mission handed out coats and jackets free of
charge to warm those in need. People searched
their closets for those coats outgrown by chil-
dren or seldom worn to give to people in more
dire straits. A community pulled together and
our inner light grew brighter.
Up and down our blocks, people who we’ve
never met, never spoken to, introduced them-
selves, offered assistance, offered words of
encouragement. Neighbors with power and
Internet hosted those without. Our light
burned brighter still.
Power and heat have been returned. The
lights in our house blaze. Our children no
longer need to wear hats and gloves in our
homes. Last week, we pulled the Hanukkah
decorations from our basement and put our
Hanukiot stand on the windowsill waiting to
be lit. But we must not forget those in com-
munities not far from us, those who still suffer
the effects of Sandy and will feel those effects
for months and months to come.
So many residents in New Jersey still have
no homes. Children are without the things
that make them feel happy and secure. Their
schools remain in need of repair. Their friends
have relocated to places far from New Jersey.
Life has not returned to normal for them.
We encourage you to make this holiday one
of giving. Find old toys to donate. Give warm
gloves and scarves to the Red Cross or another
local organization that helps those in need.
Buy a bag of groceries for the Interfaith Food
Pantry, or volunteer your time and help serve
a meal.
This year on Hanukkah, the Religious
School will pool our classroom tzedakah mon-
ey. We will ask the students to vote on where
the money should go. Together, we will try
to rekindle the inner light, the inner spirit of
those around us.
Enjoy the holiday, the warmth, the love, the
spirit. Make this a time to count your bless-
ings and gather those you love around you.

CHECK OUT OUR GIFTS FOR THE MAH JONGG LOVER
AT THE SISTERHOOD GIFT SHOP
SisterhoodThe past month has presented enor-
mous challenges for many of you and
we sincerely hope that when you read this,
your lives have begun to return to normal.
The importance of our MJCBY community
has never been so apparent as during this
time. We hope that as normalcy resumes
you will take the opportunity to join your
Sisterhood for some programs to celebrate
our strengths, accomplishments, and intel-
lectual richness.
On Sunday, December 16, Sisterhood
welcomes you to the Annual Torah Fund
Brunch honoring Sharon Barkauskas and
Roberta Meyer as recipients of the Eishet
Chayil Award. You should have received
your invitations by now. If you have not,
please call the office. We hope you’ll come
out for this festive brunch and help us
honor Sharon and Roberta for their years
of service and many accomplishments.
On January 12, we will have our annual
Sisterhood Shabbat. This is a very special
Shabbat where our own Sisterhood mem-
bers lead the service. Participation is en-
couraged and if you would like to have an
English or Hebrew part please call Ellen
Baum at (973) 442-7610 or Marsha Lewin
at (973) 966-1875, who are coordinating
this service.
For the book lovers in Sisterhood, our
vibrant book group meets monthly. The
next meeting will be Sunday, December 2,
with the discussion of “The Dovekeepers”
by Alice Hoffman. Join them at 10:30 am
at the home of Ricki Sokol. If you would
like more information, contact Book Club
leaders, Amy Brunswick or Marcy Needle.
Of course, as Hanukkah approaches,
don’t forget about the fabulous Sisterhood
Gift Shop. It’s a one-stop shop for all of
your Judaica gifts. Beyond the joys of fry-
ing latkes, lighting the menorah, and de-
lighting our children with Hanukkah pres-
ents, we want most of all to remember to
reach out to others who have less than we
do, in an effort to make someone else’s
life a little better and a little brighter. As
a synagogue and Sisterhood community,
that has always been one of our central
values and this year opportunities to make
a difference are right in our own backyard.
Last month, Sisterhood sponsored two
events that many of you attended. Our
Paid Up Membership Dinner brought out
members new and old to enjoy a delicious
dinner, learn about the many aspects of
Sisterhood, bid on fun raffle prizes, and
just plain socialize. A special thank you
goes out to our Membership VPs, Karen
Gooen and Beverly Cytto, as well as our
Fundraising VPs, Amy Soled and Kim Syn-
alovski, for their above-and-beyond efforts
in making this evening such a success. On
October 18, we held our “kickoff” program
where several Sisterhood members created
beautiful pieces of glass art Judaica as part
of the Glass Ribbon Project. We each cre-
ated a unique piece while supporting the
fight against breast cancer. Thank you to
Hilary Spain Reilly and Barbara Stein, our
Program VPs, for organizing and executing
this very fun evening.
We wish you all a Happy and Healthy
Hanukkah and hope to see you at our De-
cember events.
Warmly, Lynne and Dorothy
