December 2012 The Hardy Heartline We’re the Church with a Warm The other day I was putting up the Christmas tree with my family which always provides a nostalgic moment for me. As a child I often wondered how my mom had collected so many ornaments over the years. There were Jesus bobbles, artwork from our childhood, random stars, and odd assortments of Santa Clauses. It’s amazing the variety of things that make up a family tree. Christmas often seems to reflect the assorted memories of a Christmas tree. I remember sit- ting around it with parents and loved ones opening presents on Christmas day. I remember Christmas Eve services singing Christmas carols with my father while hoping the preacher would hurry with his sermon so I could get home and open the one allotted gift for the eve- ning. I remember holy moments when my parents read the Bible around the fire. I remem- ber less holy moments when my sisters and I fought to see who would get into the present room first. We always find pieces of Jesus in the season surrounded by our cultural collage of materialism. Often we see the “Reason for the Season” being a small moment on Christmas Eve when we raise our candles high and sing “Silent Night.” Maybe we make a tribute to our historical baby Jesus by hanging the religious ornaments or setting up the Nativity to remind us that the birth of Christ is the reason we go through this hubbub anyway. However, it is important to remember that the Christmas season is not a historical celebration. It is a living one. Christ did not come to the earth to get a bumper sticker and say he’s been here. Christ came to save the world and then sent his Counselor to walk with us in his absence. This Christmas I realize how fast my ornament collection is growing. There is new artwork, new stars with names of loved ones on them, new Jesus bobbles with my son’s handprint. I realize how Christ has been in all of it: in my parenting, in my marriage, in the artwork I create, and in the saints that have come into my life. The Christmas tree in my house is not just an assortment of seasonal tributes with a scat- tering of religious paraphernalia. It is a tribute to how God has worked in all the places of my fam- ily’s life, and considering the growing pile of Christmas boxes I unloaded this season, he has been a busy Savior. The other day I was putting up the Christmas tree with my family which always provides a

nostalgic moment for me. As a child I often wondered how my mom had collected so many

ornaments over the years. There were Jesus bobbles, artwork from our childhood, random stars, and odd assortments of Santa Clauses. It’s amazing the variety of things that make up a

family tree.

Christmas often seems to reflect the assorted memories of a Christmas tree. I remember sit-ting around it with parents and loved ones opening presents on Christmas day. I remember

Christmas Eve services singing Christmas carols with my father while hoping the preacher would hurry with his sermon so I could get home and open the one allotted gift for the eve-

ning. I remember holy moments when my parents read the Bible around the fire. I remem-ber less holy moments when my sisters and I fought to see who would get into the present

room first. We always find pieces of Jesus in the season surrounded by our cultural collage of materialism.

Often we see the “Reason for the Season” being a small moment on Christmas Eve when we raise our candles high and sing “Silent Night.” Maybe we make a tribute to our historical

baby Jesus by hanging the religious ornaments or setting up the Nativity to remind us that the birth of Christ is the reason we go through this hubbub anyway. However, it is important to remember that the Christmas season is not a historical celebration. It is a living one. Christ did not come to the earth to get a bumper sticker and say he’s been here. Christ came to

save the world and then sent his Counselor to walk with us in his absence. This Christmas I realize

how fast my ornament collection is growing. There is new artwork, new stars with names of loved

ones on them, new Jesus bobbles with my son’s handprint. I realize how Christ has been in all of

it: in my parenting, in my marriage, in the artwork I create, and in the saints that have come into

my life. The Christmas tree in my house is not just an assortment of seasonal tributes with a scat-

tering of religious paraphernalia. It is a tribute to how God has worked in all the places of my fam-

ily’s life, and considering the growing pile of Christmas boxes I unloaded this season, he has been

a busy Savior.

A Warm Hardy Thank You

Thanks to all of you who have touched the life of our son

Ken. We appreciate your caring concern for him as he left

for basic training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. We

also appreciate your concern for us as a family as we said

good bye as he embarked on this major part of his life.

The love of the church was made visible in many ways but

especially during the morning worship service when Pas-

tor Preston prayed a special prayer of blessing. For those

who have asked, his address is available by calling the

church office.

Thanks again and God bless,

Ken and Kennessa Pratt

Paul writes in Romans 12:4-5 “Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all

have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”

In this passage we are reminded that God created each of us with a purpose. Where we often miss the message of

this passage is in the phrase “these members do not all have the same function.”

It is easy for us to look at the preacher or youth director or music director or Sunday school teacher and say, “That’s

not me…I could never do that.” Well, you may be absolutely right. God may not have given you that purpose. But

God has given you a purpose. It may not be to stand in front of people or to lead a group, but there are many mem-

bers and the body is large. Each member is vital to the body and one member is not more important than another.

God has made us all to be active members of His body and I encourage you to consider where God is calling you

as we speed towards another year. Where can God use you at Hardy in 2013? How can you be a support to our

growing congregation? Remember that each one of us is important and needed and God loves all of us. So as we

close out 2012 and get ready for the holidays and then a new year, let us all consider God’s calling in our lives and

let us thank Him for giving each of us a wonderful purpose in His love.

Blessings Micah

December 23rd in the morning service, the Chancel Choir will present

Michael W. Smith’s “Agnus Dei” a worship cantata for Christmas.

You don’t want to miss this presentation of beautiful music and worship just before Christmas.
