what is thE ExcEptional family mEmbEr program?by Jeanette Smith

The Exceptional Family Member Program or EFMP is a mandatory U.S. Department of Defense enrollment program that works with other military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated community support, housing, educational, medical and personnel services worldwide to U.S. military families with special needs.

Service members on active duty enroll in this program when they have an Exceptional Family Member (EFM) with a physical, developmental or emotional diagnosis requiring specialized services to meet the needs of their EFM. EFMP helps connect each family with the needed services and resources at their current command and during the military personnel assignment process.

Service members must enroll in the program once they are aware that their EFM meets eligibility criteria per MCO 1754.4B. Service members are responsible for keeping their EFMP enrollment current as the EFM’s conditions change or at least every three years, whichever comes first.

EFMP is a family centered program that values a climate of respect, trust and understanding that each family is unique and has the right to receive equal care. EFMP’s service philosophy seeks to empower families, build on their strengths and provide them with information to enable them to make well informed decisions. A well trained and empowered sponsor is the most effective advocate for their EFM. For more information visit our EFMP Web Site at: mccs.sc.com/efmp/index.html or call our Training, Education & Outreach Specialist, Jeanette Smith, at (843) 228-3849 to find out more about services and resources that are available.

PRIME For Life® is a risk reduction program. The first goal of the program is to help each Marine in the program reduce their risk for any type of alcohol or drug problem. The second goal focuses on self-assessment to help Marines understand and accept the need to make changes to protect the things most valuable in their lives. The program is open to all Marines. PFL 4.5 is a universal prevention program and is not an appropriate substitute for a SAC referral for Marines who have had an ARI or who may be chemically dependent.
