Every year at this time I look back over the past 11 months and weigh the good and bad decisions, the exciting happenings, the grief of lost cats and the happiness of new adoptions, the accomplishments we've made and the problems

that need to be addressed in the next year.

Although we are always looking for more volunteers, we have a few very special people who give of their time to come to the shelter to visit the cats and help make their home as pleasant as possible. This year the shelter got a facelift when all the walls were painted by DawnMarie Puleo and Rikk—I can't begin to tell you what a

difference the light colors have made. You should stop in to look sometime!

We raised two litters of kittens this year. I know.... we are primarily an adult cat sanctuary but sometimes a sad story breaks through my resolve. All the early kittens

found homes. Mom is awaiting hers—she so deserves a very special one. Our late arrivals are slowly learning to accept human company. This year Spencer gave us serious concerns for several months as we first tried to find out what we were faced with and then worked to overcome the terrible symptoms he had. His recovery is an example of what loving care can accomplish and that care was given totally by our shelter manager, Judy DiFranco, who devoted untold hours a day to

tube feedings and special skin care.

Spring and summer saw a flurry of adoptions for which we are truly thankful. We wish our new pet parents years of happy companionship with their former Purr-fect

Companions Sanctuary residents.

Fundraising is always a challenge, but we had a very successful event at Scoundrels in May thanks to all of our volunteers including Michele Javorek, Tamara McDonald, Karel Lojowsky, Tina Kiss, Ashley Fehribach and DawnMarie. Our Xmas craft tables

were overseen by Diane again, and Ginny and the crafting group made items.

I wish all our friends, supporters, sponsors, volunteers and staff a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy New Year.

sometimes, medical condi-

the best care possible so that

they always experience com-

5 Reasons Senior Cats Rule Senior cats seem to understand that

they’ve been rescued and are all the more

thankful.

Senior cats likely already know basic house-

hold etiquette—like not attacking feet at

night!

Senior cats are usually litter-trained and

less likely to “forget” where the box is.

A senior cat won’t grow any larger, so

you’ll know exactly how much cat you’re

getting.

Senior cats are often content to just

relax in your company, unlike younger

cats who may get into mischief

because they’re bored.

November was “adopt a senior cat” month, but we think it should last all year! At Purr-fect Companions Sanctuary, we have some wonderful senior cats who would

make great companions. Won’t you consider one when adopting!

Showcasing Our Seniors

SPICE (right) is around 10 years old and is very friend-

ly. She LOVES visitors and to sit on laps and snuggle!

FRAN (left) is around 13 years old and really needs a quiet home with adults who fawn over her -- no other animals, no children.

SYLVIA (right) is an adorable little lady who is around 10

years old and gets along great with other cats. She is very

relaxed and likes to sit on laps.

SEATHER (left) is a 17 year-old female who is a relaxed cat and loves to be petted.

Join us in 2016 for our fundraising events! Plans are underway for our annual Spring fundraiser and other events in 2016 to help raise

funds needed to care for our long-term residents and find forever homes for our adoptable

cats. We hope you will continue to support us in the coming year.

Check our website and Facebook page for updates and information as we finalize our plans.

ROCCO (left) is a “young” 12 year-old brown and black tabby who loves atten-tion; he is our chatty, active senior!

MANDY (right) is 10 years old and very loving. She is more reserved and would do best in a home without children.

ARTHUR (left) is an 11 year-old brown tabby who loves to be petted. Even though his back legs tend to slow him down, he still loves to play with the laser light!

Senior cats are some of the hardest to find homes—so you truly save a life when adopting one!

Mark Twain loved cats. He once said, “I simply can’t resist a cat, particularly

a purring one. They are the cleanest, cunningest, and most intelligent things

I know, outside of the girl you love, of course.” A cat is more intelligent than

people believe and can be taught any crime, Twain wrote in 1895. And when

it came to cats and humans, cats were the standard that humanity needed

to attain, because “If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve

man, but it would deteriorate the cat.” Even though no one could hope to

reach this ideal, that doesn’t mean we’re all bad. Twain wrote: “When a

man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade without further introduc-

He would call (the cats) to

"come up" on the chair, and

they would all jump up on

the seat. He would tell them

to "go to sleep, and instantly

the group were all fast

called "Wide awake!" when

in a twinkling up would go

their ears and wide open

Twain’s cats often accompanied him in a game of billiards. In a

letter to Mable Larkin Patterson, 2 October 1908, he wrote

“One of them likes to be crammed into a corner-pocket of the

billiard table -- which he fits as snugly as does a finger in a glove

and then he watches the game (and obstructs it) by the hour,

and spoils many a shot by putting out his paw and changing the

direction of a passing ball.” Twain truly loved his cats!
