Eco-Buggy Tour in Lyonia Preserve from 9:00-11:00
a.m. December 5. Nature lovers can get a different perspective
of Lyonia Preserve during this fun program. Participants will board
the county’s “eco-buggy”, a covered trailer equipped with benches,
to join LEC staff to learn about scrub habitat along with the wildlife that
call this unique place their home. Participants should wear appropriate
clothing, comfortable shoes, and bring binoculars and a camera. Limited
seating is available for this tour and registration is strongly suggested.
This program is free and attendees will meet at the pavilion in the Lyonia
Preserve.
Tiny Trekkers: “Gingerbread Friends” from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday
December 5. Come read a book along with us about a lonely gingerbread
baby, who having set out to find a friend, enters a bakery where he tries to talk
to different cookies and other figures, but winds up leading a crowd back to his
house on a chase. This program is recommended for children ages 2-5. This
program is free and is sponsored by The Friends of Lyonia Environmental Center.
Naturally Christmas workshop from 1:00-
2:30 p.m. Saturday December 5. ‘Tis the
season to decorate your home with what nature
provides. During this program we will teach you how
to use natural items to decorate your home and give it a one of a
kind look. From pine cones, twigs and other materials found in
nature, we will use our creative minds to see what we can put
together. This program is free and is sponsored by The Friends of
Lyonia Environmental Center.
Holiday Recycled Ornaments from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday December 6.
Bring the family to “green” up your holiday tree by making some
handcrafted ornaments from recycled materials. Get in the holiday spirit as
we enjoy some holiday tunes, sip hot cider, and eat cookies while we work.
Refreshments are provided by The Friends of Lyonia Environmental Center.
Cost is $3 per participant.
Parent’s Shopping Day Out from 10:00 – 2:00 pm Saturday, December
12. Need some time without the kids to take care of that holiday shopping
list, decorate or wrap gifts? Kids ages 5 – 13 can join LEC education staff
for a fun afternoon of nature themed games, arts & crafts, and a holiday
movie. Bring a clearly labeled sack lunch and drink for each child. An
afternoon snack will be provided. ADVANCED REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED,
and space is limited. Cost is $15 for the first child, $10 for additional siblings.
The Peculiar Poinsettia from 2:00-3:00 p.m.
Sunday, December 13 The beautiful red color of
the poinsettia is a holiday favorite! Learn about
the history and customary uses of this striking plant, and create a
poinsettia craft from up-cycled products to take home with you.
Participants will be entered into a drawing to win a potted poinsettia.
This program is free.
Holiday Wreath Making from 10:00 – 11:30 am Wednesday, December
16 & Saturday December 19. Brought back by popular demand!
It’s that time of year to make holiday wreaths at the LEC! Bring the
family to create a one of a kind wreath out of sand pine clippings,
pine cones and other materials found in nature. Ribbon and other supplies
will also be provided. Cost per wreath is $10 and can be paid on date of program.
Hot apple cider and cookies will be provided as well. Supplies are needed for
this program so please call 386-789-7207 ext. #21028 to register. Refreshments
are provided by the Friends of Lyonia Environmental Center.
Outdoor Scavenger Hunt hike from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday December
19. We will host a guided outdoor scavenger hunt, with an intro to “geocaching”.
Come “cache” in on this no experience necessary leisurely stroll through Lyonia
Preserve. Be prepared to see birds, butterflies, trees, and at the end you might
even find a hidden “cache”. This program is recommended for beginners ages
10 and up and is free of charge.
Brrrr! Baby, It’s Cold Outside from 3:00-4:00
p.m. Sunday December 20. What do the
reptiles in Lyonia Preserve do during the winter?
Join LEC education staff to learn about some of these
ectothermic (cold-blooded) species and how they survive the
cooler months. Hot chocolate will be served. This free program is
sponsored by the Friends of Lyonia Environmental Center.
Tiny Trekkers: “Bear Snores On” from 10:00 – 11:00 am Saturday,
December 26. We will read a book about a bear whose cave fills with
animal friends as he sleeps, take a hike out in the preserve and make a
winter craft for children to take home. This program is recommended
for children ages 2-5. This program is free and is sponsored by The
Friends of Lyonia Environmental Center.
Winter in the Scrub hike from 1:00-2:30 p.m. Saturday December 26.
Time to dust off those winter boots and take to the trails. We will go on an
exploratory hike into the preserve to see what animals and tracks we can
observe. Participants should bring water, wear closed toed shoes, dress
appropriately for the weather, and be prepared to hike on unpaved sugar sand
trails. This program is free.
Parallels in Nature Hike in Lyonia Preserve
from 2:00-3:30 pm Sunday December 27 Join LEC
education staff on this guided hike in Lyonia Preserve
as we discuss modern inventions that have been inspired by nature.
Participants should bring water, wear closed toed shoes, and be
prepared to hike on unpaved sugar sand trails. This program is free.
Guided Scrub Strolls at 9:00 a.m. every Monday and Friday in December.
LEC staff will lead these guided hikes in Lyonia Preserve. Strolls will be offered
every Monday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. It is strongly suggested that
participants wear closed toed shoes, bring water, and be prepared to hike on unpaved
sugar sand trails. These programs are free.
