Presidential letter for DesigNr December edition

DEC16 356 GNW Prez Letter

The year is drawing to a close and it's time for a little retrospection. First I would like to thank those who helped to make this a successful year, all those who made contributions to the DesigNr, those who volunteered and assisted in our club events, our board members and all who assisted me throughout the year. There are too many to list so I will just say thank you all on behalf of the club.

We have a new slate of officers for this year and although most of them are repeats we do have a new secretary Rhys Haydon. Thank you Rhys for stepping forward and we look forward to working with you in 2017. Your new board has been busy putting together a schedule for next year. I think you will find much diversity in the events, this should give anyone with an interest in the cars a chance to get out and participate. I hope to see you all in 2017.

In looking back on this year I have pulled out two of my favorite photos. One is following Rick & Sally Daniel-son in a thunderstorm while in Utah, the other is coming out of the tunnel at Tunnel View in Yosemite.

I had no one reporting mileage for the month. With the end of the year coming up please take the time to report your mileage for the year by the 20th of Dec. The weather cooperated for one last weekend and we got a trip in of 190 miles, what a pleasant way to end the driving season as now, like most of you, the car will be in the garage until spring.

I would like to thank Bill Moore, Ron Dempsey, Geoff Daigle and Tom Olson for their contribution to our November newsletter. If you too have a story to share please send them to the DesigNr Editor Jack Keyes at [email protected].

Finally, may you all have a happy and safe holiday season, Keep the Faith and get out and drive!

Mike L Thornton

Road Therapy 101Continuing the Saga...

Woke up to heavy fog this morning at about 6 in Newport, but it cleared quickly to reveal exactly why we brought the car cover. It was completely soaked, just from the salt air fog. Got the cover off, and even with it on to keep most of the salt air off, the car was still pretty wet and the windows were fogged.

Since it was our first night on the road, before breakfast I figured I’d start the car, just to see if there’d be any starting issues. So I pumped the gas twice, and then noticed that the gas pedal was floored and stuck there. Not good. Especially on moun-tain roads. Checked the engine and the throttle linkages were smooth and clear there. Had a hunch, so I checked the rubber floor mat. Yup. It was rubbing. Pulled and tugged a bit, and got things to not hang up. Whew. Off we go.

Took off from Newport around 9:30, heading south on 101. Great beaches along the Oregon coast that go on forever. And nobody on them. The whole Oregon coast is gorgeous and you can pretty much have it to yourself, once you’re south of Cannon Beach and Newport.

Roads weren’t too busy, being a Monday morning, but we did see dozens of bicyclers in pairs, loaded down with camp-ing stuff. There’s a camp site or park every few miles, and the bike trail along 101 is pretty wide for cyclists.

Got into Eureka about noon and found a German restau-rant. Seemed appropriate. Had a nice bite to eat, fueled up the car and headed south on 101 again.

2:45 saw some nice rock formations at Myer's Creek with wind surfers out in the waves. Best endless coastline this Oregon Coast! Mile marker 339.3:56 pm We've just entered the Redwoods north of Eureka about 50 miles. It is so aromatic with great forest smells.

5:30 pm Arrived in Eureka, gas and go. One + hour further so we can make it to the historic Benbow Inn below Garberville. About 8+ hours of driving, but good scenery all the way. And nice windy roads. We had decided to push past Eureka today so it’d give us time to meet our 356 friends in Carmel by 6 tomorrow. Then, one night in Carmel, and off to Yosemite Wednesday.

Benbow Inn is really old and cool. They’re renovating now, to update things, but it is a place with great old world charm and a terrific outdoor patio dining area. Not too busy, so service was great, food was delicious and it was nicely warm for outdoor dining.

Cheers.

Geoff and Candace

Just One MooreDecember, 2016By Bill Moore

Raise your hand if you remember Jay McDonald. Hmmmmm.... Just a few hands up! Jay was one of the founders of the 356 Northwest Group. He was the first newsletter editor; a one page flyer. He now owns an Oregon winery named EI-EIO. Get it? I occasionally see him in McMinnville. In order to finance some winery expenses, he sold his 356 – (a common occurrence in the industry - Sell something to keep the doors open and the juice flowing.) OK you can put your hands down now. If you can find his wine, give a toast to Jay and the good old days. Did you see the article on the internet about the Speedster that sold for over 600K? It had rested in a mid-west garage for many years. Very original, untouched, low mileage vehi-cle. Wowzer!! In the Marketwatch section of the latest Registry, five speedsters were featured. Three were sold for an average price of $405,000. One was unsold for $290,000 and one was a Carrera that sold for $881,000. If you have a Speedster, plan to be wealthy. If you own any open 356, plan to be not quite as wealthy, but close! Don't own an open car? Better get one, or as Janice would sing, “Get it while you can.” The really big news is the return of Emory's Campout! Mark your calendars now – July 14-16 at the Emory compound in McMinnville. It will be a top down day, so get ready. And yes, Gary confirmed that it will happen. Claims he was the last to know. We have Rod and Lin-da to thank as the events instigators. Yippee – I received a “Letter to the Editor” from a reader in Florida. It goes as follows: Dear J.O.M., I too am having problems keeping critters out of my 356. My critters are a bit larger than mice – they are gators! They come out of the Everglades at night, cross the road and get into my garage. They eat the tires! Hard to believe, but that's what they do. My friend, Billy, down the road has the same problem. We decided to fill our tires with cyanide gas, so when the gaters bit, they'd skiddle cuz they wouldn't like the taste or the odor. Not working but we now have a new problem. Dead gators all over the yard. Yuck! And you thought dead mice reeked. Any suggestions for me? Yours truly, Les Tyers Key West, FL
