I continue to be so encouraged by the dedication and commitment of our students, parents, staff, district, and community. This loyal and collaborative spirit has allowed TCES to effectively continue to fulfill our mission … a learning community that parents value, where teachers thrive, and children long to be!

It is indeed an honor to serve you, your children, our staff, and this community. I sincerely wish for each of you a safe and meaningful holiday season.

On Friday, November 11, Tega Cay Elementary welcomed Veterans from the Tega Cay Veteran’s Association as well as Veterans or current Service Members of a Tega Cay Elementary student’s family to have breakfast to honor their service to our country. Students joined their Veteran or Service Member in the cafeteria for a short, meaningful program. Mrs. Levan welcomed all, and the Color Guard from Fort Mill High School presented the colors. The 3rd grade, led by Ms. Boliner, performed the National Anthem and sang other patriotic songs. Mrs. Levan created a heartfelt video of the students thanking their family Veteran or Service Member. Then over 100 people enjoyed a breakfast made by our own wonderful cafeteria staff! From Our Home to Yours....

As the holiday season approaches so does toy shopping for the special children in our lives. Toys are intended to be fun but they can be dangerous if not properly made and designed. Every year, thousands of children under the age of 14 suffer serious eye injuries, even blindness, from toys.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission receives about 15 reports of choking deaths to children under age 3 yearly. Some of these deaths involve items that are considered known hazards such as small toys, toy parts, balloons, balls and marbles. In addition to known hazards, such as balloons, there are many tragic deaths each year that result from hidden hazards. These are often small objects not intended for use by children but that accidentally end up in their hands and mouths.

Bicycles, scooters, and motorcycles are common Christmas gifts. These are a lot of fun, but accidents happen and it is great to keep this in mind. Every year, about 300,000 kids go to the emergency department because of bike injuries with head injuries being the most common reason for these visits.

Hello Titan Families! We hope that you all have a safe and wonderful holiday!

This month I wanted to briefly discuss screen time, as research shows that during the holidays there is a general increase in the usage of screen viewing (television, video games, computer usage, and smart devices such as phones and/or tablets).

A recent workshop I attended, sponsored & conducted by South East Psychology, discussed the impact screen viewing can have on academic achievement. When used excessively screen time can decrease a child’s GPA or letter grade at least one point or letter respectively.

Extended usage of screen viewing can have a significant effect on how children socially interact with each other and adults. The current generation has had exposure to advanced technology such as smart devices, internet, social media, and

advanced online gaming throughout their lives. This exposure can be productive, but is increasingly preventing children from developing the face-to-face social skills of the previous generation. Children are beginning to display signs of decreased empathy or understanding.

After attending this workshop I did some of my own research. I came across an excellent article on screen time that discussed the new recommendations published in October 2016 by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP):

• Screentimeforchildrenyoungerthan 18 months should be avoided, except in the case of video chatting.

• Parentsofchildrenages18monthsto 2 years who choose to introduce digital media into their children’s lives should choose high-quality programs, and they should watch these programs with their kids to help them understand what exactly

they are seeing, according to the recommendations.

• Theparentsofchildrenages2to5years should limit kids’ screen time to 1 hour per day, according to the recommendations.

• Forkidsages6yearsandolder,parents should place consistent limits on how much screen time they are allowed per day. Parents should also make sure that kids do not use digital media at the expense of activities that are important for their health, such as sleep and exercise.

• Parentsshouldalsodesignatespecific “media-free” times for the family, such as dinnertime, for example. In addition, certain areas of the home, such as bedrooms, should also be deemed “media-free,” according to the recommendations.

• Therecommendationsalsoofferedguidance on how parents should talk to their kids about online behavior. For example, parents should teach kids to treat others with respect, both online and offline. They should also talk to kids about their safety in online environments, the researchers recommended.

Dr. Jenny Radesky, a pediatrician at the University of Michigan and a co-author of the new recommendations, said in a statement. “What’s most important is that parents be their child’s ‘media mentor.’ That means teaching them how to use it as a tool to create, connect and learn.”

The full article on the new recommendations can be found at http://www.livescience.com/56577-screen-time-guidelines-for-kids.html

KAThLeen mILLs, reading I teach Reading Recovery and Literacy Groups. I spend the majority of my time with first graders, whom I love. It is so awesome to watch students move from reading a

few words, to reading whole books in just a short amount of time. Reading Recovery

has been in the United States for over thirty years and has helped over 2,000,000 first graders read!

KIm hArT, reading As the reading coach at TCES, my job is to support teachers in their reading instruction. I help teachers with effective instructional strategies and data analysis to differentiate instruction

to meet the needs of all learners in their classrooms. In addition, I also facilitate a class

for teachers once a month after school. I love being a part of the TCES community of learners.

jessIcA cATLeDGe, reading This is my 17th year in the Fort Mill School District. I have been a Reading Specialist here at TCES for 3 years now. I work with students in grades K-5. I teach guided reading

groups to help reinforce readings skills that are being taught in the classrooms. I also help

students on selecting interesting and just right books for independent reading. My goal is to foster the love of reading for every student here at TCES.

Ann LAmbA, math This is my 28th year of teaching! My kids have both graduated from Fort Mill schools. I have seen what a great education Fort Mill provides first hand. I have been a Math Specialist

at Tega Cay since we opened. I work with kids all over the building. I also offer

homework help most mornings starting at 7:15. If I can do anything please let me know…my goal is for every child to feel successful!

KeLLy sTAnAr, speech I feel lucky to be the Speech-Language Pathologist at TCES! (In the past I have traveled between several schools but this year am fortunate to only be here!) I help kiddos with speech

and language problems, such as delays in articulation (speech sound errors), expressive

and receptive language, and stuttering. Students typically come to me 1-2 times per week to get specialized instruction and individualized feedback on their specific goals. We work hard and have fun while we help support each other!

We have some great support teachers at TCES that work closely with homeroom

teachers to enhance the overall learning of students. We asked the Reading, Math,

and Speech specialists to tell us a little about what they do here at our school!
