Future Rock Hound

NOVEMBER ARTS AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL

The Rock Hounds Club had an effective presence at this annual event held November 24-25. Many folks perused our

wares and some made purchases. We heard the phrase, “I love rocks!” quite often. Membership in the club was

highlighted and a few joined with others that may do so in the near future. This is a wonderful event to gain greater exposure for club activities. We believe we set new records with about 740 people visiting the Mineral Museum. All told, we sold over $1,216 worth of merchandise, mostly our beloved rocks. Once again, “the wheel” was a favorite of children of all ages. Three new members joined the club during the festival. Hats off to volunteers who served faithfully and enthusiastically to make this endeavor such a glorious success. They are as follows:

Also the Kronenbergs and the Macs who showed up to help even though they hadn’t signed up. We were also appreciative to Mary Hankins and Beth Mead who spent all Friday morning when they had signed up for far less time. Also, to Phil whose name you see on every list above. (*Just like Santa, I checked my list twice; please forgive me if I forgot your name.) –Thanks so much, David and Cheryl Alvord.

You’ll have to ask Eliz what is going on in this picture.

NOVEMBER MEETING At the November meeting, those attending elected new club officers and voted to change the Field Trip Leaders (aka, Scouts) to a non-Board position. The following members were elected to serve in the designated positions for 2018: BOARD PRESIDENT- David Alvord Vice President- Cheryl Alvord SECRETARY- Mary Brown-Martilik TREASURER- Laurie Helmer Those who have volunteered to serve in NON-BOARD positions: MEMBERSHIP COORDINATOR: Eileen Moberg MONITOR COORDINATOR: Bill Allison FIELD TRIP COORDINATOR/S: Vicky and Bill Kronenberg REFRESHMENT COMMITTEE: Marty Martin, Beth Mead and Karin Schardt MUSEUM COORDINATOR: Mike Blachut FLORESCENT RM COORDINATOR: Dave Balzer SHED COORDINATOR/S: (Open): Duties include holding the shed key, responsible for gathering teams to sort, organize and price rocks. Also, to insure that large donations are picked up and brought to the shed. (Can be “snowbird” as those who are around in the summer can cover this during that time period. Good two-person position.) What a great opportunity is waiting for one or two good rock lovers… I am surprised you all are not fighting to get to be the Shed Coordinator. You get to see the rock first when someone bequeaths them to us. Most of the rocks we have are already sorted in the shed. We have people who have shown up consistently over the years to help me sort the rocks in to $1.00, $2.00, etc. boxes. (Vicky Kronenberg, Linda Morley, and Colin Morley) I am counting on you, step forward, please. -Mary Brown-Martilik Meet the People in our Club

Laurie Helmer “I have been interested in rocks all my life, I always pick-up rocks wherever I go”, Laurie said. Laurie came to the Rock Hound Club to learn and there is a wealth of knowledge here. She loves field trips; she says all of them are great. Field trips are an incentive for Laurie to see Arizona as well as rock hound. Laurie has a small collection of gems and minerals; her collection has a Herkimer Diamond, Desert Rose, Smokey Quartz, and a big piece of Rose Quartz.

She has made a lot of friends in the Rock Hound Club, and finds the members enthusiastic and there is a community spirit. She was born in Iowa, and has lived in Santa Fe, Saudi Arabia, Florida, Georgia, Colorado, and Mexico. Laurie joined the Rock Hound Club 3 years ago. She has 7 sisters and 1 brother, husband, Don, and 2 children. She saw a need and volunteered to be elected Treasurer to help the Rock Hound Club. By Mike Blachut

Our Rockin’ Group

Whose shadow?

Monitors

A quick reminder for veteran and new club members. Regular staffing of the Sundial Mineral Museum is part of your responsibility as a Rock hound member. Strongly encouraged is at least three hours per month as a monitor at the museum. This is a fairly easy and interesting way to be involved and to get more familiar with the rocks the museum houses. It also helps with getting to know and feel a part of the club. Shifts are three hours long from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Mon-Wed, Fri-Saturday, closed Thursdays and Sundays.

The ideal way for new monitors to be trained is to serve with an experienced monitor (or monitors) and review the monitor manual together. You can volunteer by going into or calling the museum during museum hours, signing up at a membership meeting or contacting Cheryl Alvord at [email protected] or 207-797-0619. See last page for schedule. Upcoming Field Trip Thursday December 21st Yes, for those Rockhounds who are around and up for adventure, there will be a December field trip on Thursday, December 21st. Vicky and Bill Kronenberg, our scouts for this year are willing to lead us out on an adventure to Table Mesa. Red, brown, and yellow jasper can be found there. Bring along plenty of water, sunscreen, lunch and snacks, a bucket/bag for collecting, digging implements (optional) and a folding chair. As usual, meet for carpooling from Bell Rec Center, SE corner at 8 A.M. High clearance vehicles will be preferred. Directions will be provided there. Join what promises to be a small but mighty group. Happy hunting!
