The month-long Delta Green Building Exhibition at Kaohsiung concluded in the end of October. Our team from the Foundation quickly packed and prepared to leave for the UN's climate conference COP23 in Bonn, Germany. This will mark the 11th consecutive year of Delta Foundation's participation in the climate change conference. Over the years, Delta was always there to witness and support the international efforts in climate change.

I have been asked the same question by people from various companies: How did Delta begin to get involved in the climate change conference? As a matter of fact, "energy-saving" has always been the core business of Delta. When the foundation aligned itself with this task, carbon emission reduction is no longer just our CSR, but our corporate mission. In the past two years, the global tour of the "Delta Green Building Exhibition" has shown the world our energy-saving technologies. In EcoMobility World Festival & Congress 2017 at Kaohsiung, Delta has attracted the attention from the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) and they invited Delta to give a speech at their COP23 side event. In this event, Delta shared with the international community how the company helps facilitate sustainable cities. This issue's "Special Report" will share the first-hand observation and reports with our readers.

In "About DSM", we are happy to share successful stories from IABG and DRC. Automatic guided vehicles (AGV) running around in the factory to supply products and materials is now a reality. IABG's "Smart AGV Distribution Solution" helped customers to upgrade to smart logistics management, which reduces manpower and costs, and collects data through the interconnect network system. It is one giant step towards smart factories. DRC introduced t "Intelligent Production Optimization Solution," which prevents problems in manufacturing with two main functions: "correlation analysis" and "key factors analysis". Starting from 2018, this column will cover another business focus - Building Automation.

The re-organization in 2017 launched an important stage in Delta's rebranding. The result of "2017 Taiwan's International Brand Value Survey" has just revealed that Delta is selected as one of the top 20 international brands from Taiwan for the 7th consecutive year. Our brand value has reached USD 250 million, an 11% growth from 2016, and we are the only company to have achieved double-digit growth for 5 consecutive years. It’s my great pleasure to share this great honor with all Delta colleagues. This issue will also report Vivitek’s success story from Iceland's Lava Center. The 4K high resolution projector with edge-blending and interactive technologies portrayed the magnificent images from the volcanic eruption. Readers will not want to miss all this and more in "Brand Circle".

Beginning next year, to make this Brand News Bi-monthly closer to our readers, the "Delta Green Live" column will open for submission. Welcome to share your low-carbon life with us.

COP23 Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany

This spring the atmosphere’s carbon dioxide exceeded a concentration of 410 ppm—a new record high for historical climate statistics. The recently published Global Carbon Budget 2017 revealed that the carbon dioxide curve produced by fossil fuels grew 2% this year, reaching 36.8 billion tons, another new high in global carbon emissions.

These two new records have dropped a bomb in the global climate community. Facing our earth’s climate crisis, governments throughout the world and international environmental groups are all mobilizing their resources and tactics to combat climate change. However, the private sector can also make a contribution.

Beginning in 2007, the Delta Foundation has attended the climate conference as a non-governmental body to stay on top of climate and energy topics and global trends. In 2012, the foundation was finally approved as an UNFCCC observer. In 2014 during COP20 in Lima, the Delta Foundation assumed a different responsibility from its previous role as a reporter, and co-hosted a side event with renowned international groups. Delta shared with nearly 200 global officials and expert scholars how it rebuilt the EEWH Diamond certified Namaxia MinQuan Elementary School, in Kaohsiung after Typhoon Morakot. In 2015 at COP21 in Paris, Delta demonstrated the 21 factory and donated green buildings it has constructed over the past 10 years. At our first-ever Delta Green Building Exhibition at the Grand Palais, Delta shared its achievements in carbon emission reduction and green building advocacy. Afterwards, we were invited to the German Pavilion to discuss Taiwan's experience in carbon emissions reduction.

Although Taiwan is not a member of the UN, the Delta Foundation aspires to bringing the latest international news to the public. The foundation has long been publishing articles in its "Low-Carbon Living" blog and it is collaborating with the Hsinchu Science Park Radio Station "Sounds of IC" through the "Climate Battle in Taiwan" program. Delta delivers knowledgeable updates on climate change, and offers first-hand information about carbon emissions reduction.

This year’s COP23 in Bonn, Germany, Delta Foundation has set up an exhibition booth for one week, from November 13 to 17. Our exhibition is for the international community and showcases Delta’s achievements in green buildings, low-carbon transportation, water resources, environmental education, and others. City representatives and distinguished visitors from Poland, which is the host of COP24, as well as France, Australia, USA, Africa, South Asia, the Middle East, China, Japan, and other regions showed great interest and were deeply impressed with the exhibition.

Since the publication of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1995, a Conference of Parties (COP) has been held every year to discuss measures to fight climate change and global warming—COP23 will be the 23rd convention. With Delta's mission "To provide innovative, clean and energy-efficient solutions for a better tomorrow", representatives of the Delta Foundation attend COP each year, and for 11 consecutive years they have observed the actions and trends of global climate negotiations.

Delta was invited by the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) to attend a side event on November 10. We shared how corporations can help cities with sustainable development and we joined in discussions with climate experts and high-level decision makers from international cities such as future city Toyama in Japan, Ulaanbaatar, Shenzhen, New Taipei City, and the Asian Development Bank. During the meeting, Delta Foundation’s Executive Director Shan-Shan Guo emphasized in particular the energy-saving potential of buildings and transportation, and presented Delta's achievements in energy saving for buildings, EV charging facilities, smart street lights, and various other solutions, while encouraging all to facilitate sustainable cities.

Delta is dedicated to the improvement of energy-saving technologies in buildings and transportation. This dedication even extends to energy infrastructure technology, which is consistent with current global trends. A high level conference in the second week of COP23 gathered the leaders of nations from around the world and their environmental departments. The spotlight was focused on the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, and the President of France, Emmanuel Macron. Macron indicated in his speech that all the nations should strive to develop green energy and promote energy storage technologies. Merkel indicated that Germany has focused the nation's carbon emission reduction efforts on buildings and transportation, which are the major sources of emissions in the world.

After the Paris Agreement went into effect, non-state level organizations were given more responsibili-ties and could have a real impact. Citizen groups, community organizations, youth, city governments, corporations, received a variety of roles and will be able to conduct more carbon emission reduction actions and climate campaigns. The Emissions Gap Report published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reminds nations that their emis-sions reduction commitments still show a discrep-ancy of 11 - 13.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide compared to the goal stated in the Paris Agreement to control global warming within 2℃. When the actions of national governments fail to achieve the planned results, private forces such as corporations and non-state organizations must work together to fill the huge gap.

For decades, Delta has been dedicated to its mission, "To provide innovative, clean and energy-efficient solutions for a better tomorrow". We continue to devel-op efficient power-saving products and solutions. Over the past 7 years, we have successfully saved 20.8 billion kWh for our customers, and have built 25 facto-ry and donated green buildings in more than a decade. In 2016 alone, our green factory offices, which generate power for self-use and record power consumption, have eliminated 15.2 million kWh in electricity consumption. These achievements demonstrate how corporations can make huge contributions to carbon emissions reduction and energy conservation.

It has been two years since the Paris Agreement. However, global warming trends have not slowed down, and the carbon emissions reduction actions of nations have been inconsistent. Delta aims to continue following climate conferences in the future. We will provide Taiwan with the latest international vision, and utilize our corporate resources and innovation capabilities to carry out our responsibilities in carbon emissions reduction.

Changing lifestyles and consumption habits are increasing consumer demand for personalized and customized products, as manufacturing industries face rapidly changing markets. Smart manufacturing is needed to meet market demand for small-volume large-variety production, it provides customers with flexibility and instant information that accelerates effective communication among managers, producers, and clients, allowing them to adapt to fast-changing markets. The goal of smart manufacturing is to connect customer demand and manufacturers’ production patterns with the IIoT, a cloud database, and management systems. High-density automation and the cloud database can help predict capacity requirements, optimize processes, and reduce production errors, to achieve flexible production based on order demand, as well as to manufacture various products in a single production line.

Among all business modes, logistics is the first priority for integrating with smart manufacturing. With an automatic distribution system and information transparency that helps bridge existing communication patterns, smart logistics can be achieved and various problems solved from material preparation to effectively managing production processes. Automatic guided vehicles (AGV) are one of the most important elements for smart logistics. During production, AGVs are coupled with smart devices to establish a smart logistic distributing system. Material management and AGV distribution are connected by the IIoT and require minimal manpower management, to perform automatic material refilling and feeding. Overall production efficiency can be greatly enhanced with real-time information feedback and management to reduce manpower delivery in the supply chain.

Recently, Delta provided a comprehensive solution for a client in China’s food processing industry to specifically enhance material distribution for the production process. This particular production line processes assorted frozen food, and seals the products with packaging equipment before proceeding to the next process. For the bag feeding process, the packaging machines require enough bagging materials to ensure a continuous sealing process that does not delay the later production steps. In the past, the client needed several workers to move the bagging materials from the warehouse storage and refill the equipment. These workers also needed to inspect the remaining material load to ensure the sealing process.

To reduce the dependency on the use of manpower for material feeding of the packaging line, Delta offered a smart logistics solution to our clients by implementing automatic guided vehicles and optimiz-ing the existing material distribution and feeding processes. Matched with high-end mid-range control-lers, the solution monitors AGV operation throughout the production lines. It also adopts industrial wireless devices for real-time exchange of the material consumption data for each production line. Based on the data, the system can distribute AGVs to feed materials with timeliness by monitoring the remaining material load. Delta’s AGV monitoring and distributing system solution can provide many smart manufacturing benefits to corporations.

In actual application, the smart logistics solution enables acquiring equipment operating data, monitor-ing the remaining material load of the packaging lines, as well as controlling AGV operation, simply by using the wireless Ethernet that covers the factory. This solution has successfully brought the following advantages to our clients:

Quality advancement is an ultimate pursuit for manufacturers. Stepping into the age of smart manufac-turing, this year with the "Intelligent Production Optimization Solution," Delta Research Center (DRC) has successfully helped a large panel display client improve the yield of new production technology, overcoming the limitations of traditional quality management to achieve production efficiency enhancement.

After the introduction of a new production technology, the production yield has reached around 80%. However, it still poses considerable rooms for improvements, given the client’s intention to maintain the leading position in the industry. Due to the large production scale, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of process stations, production machines and machine parameters which all together generate more than 50,000 factors that may influence production quality. The sheer scale makes it impossible to detect anomaly and analyze the root causes through the traditional Statistical Process Control (SPC). DRC used the "Correlation Analysis" of "Intelligent Production Optimization Solution" to first identify the quality anomaly at a front station of the line in a core production process. Then the team applied the multivariate "Key Factor Analysis" to automatically pinpoint that the possible cause of anomaly was from a specific machine.

Another significant benefit of "Intelligent Production Optimization Solution" is that it saves labor time. According to the internal estimation, the time needed for skill training for new employees can be shortened from three months to just one week, while the manpower for secondary inspection and key factor analysis can be reduced from two persons per day to 0.5 person per day, so that manpower can be re-allocated to activities of higher value. In general, this solution can potentially save production costs by 5 - 10%.

As evidenced in the case above, there are numerous and complicated factors that will impact the product quality. It often costs Manufacturers a lot in terms of manpower and spending only to find it difficult to overcome the hurdles of continuing efficiency and yield improvement. On top of that, the challenge in transferring and sharing of industry know-how intensifies the difficulty of quality advancement.

In response to these pain points of manufacturing industry, DRC utilizes advanced analytics and talents to develop the "Intelligent Production Optimization Solution." Building on Big Data Analytics Platform, the solution incorporates a wide variety of production data and expert knowledge which traditionally is difficult to transfer. In addition to the two key functions of "Correlation Analysis" and "Key Factor Analysis", it can be tailored to clients’ needs to form multiple production optimization solutions, such as "Intelligent Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI)" and "Equipment Predictive Maintenance.”

On production line, it helps staff to make timely adjustments to avoid massive production waste if early quality anomalies can be detected. The follow-on problem solving process will be even more precise and effective if the system can then automatically diagnose the causes of the anomalies. Traditional root-cause analysis is both time and labor consuming. The fact that it depends heavily on expert knowledge from senior operators and the challenge in knowledge sharing only intensify the problem. "Intelligent Production Optimization Solution" has transformed subjective, expert knowledge-oriented investigations into objective, data-driven diagnosis. It can greatly reduce the trouble shooting time for production line staff, achieving the ultimate goal of quality advancement.

Based on Big Data Analytics Platform, "Intelligent Production Optimization Solution" provides the clients with flexible selection of required functions based on their current needs and budgets

Nestling low and sleek amid a dramatic Icelan-dic landscape, lies the Lava Centre. A modern and stylish building, it integrates elegantly with its uncompromising surroundings. Despite its graceful external serenity, it is located close to five active volcanos.

A live volcano museum

It’s a position that makes the Lava Centre ideally suited to the study, exploration and appreciation of both volcano and earthquake center. Expected to welcome between 130,000 - 150,000 visitors per year, they can enjoy its array of interactive experiences in the museum.

Given that the objective for the Lava Centre was to offer an interactive, high-tech educational exhibition depicting volcanic activity, earthquakes and the creation of Iceland over millions of years, it needed high performance with ideally 4K resolution projectors.

Jokob Kristinsson, Chief Technology Officer of Feris ehf, the System Integrator appointed by the Lava Centre, was convinced that Vivitek’s offerings met its requirements.

To that end, the Lava Centre purchased 15 Vivitek projectors, comprising ten DU8090Zs, three DU8190Zs and two 4K DK8500Zs. Located throughout the Lava Centre, the projectors play a key role in some of the Centre’s more interactive elements. For example the timeline of Iceland’s creation is peppered with sensors that monitor how the visitor is interacting with the display, and can even trigger a simu-lated earthquake. As for the development demand of palletizing robots, Delta has developed a control system based on the PAC controller and proposed a situation guided technology demonstration and click-type programming method. In the on-site practical test, the system is simple to use, scalable, and easy to maintain, satisfying customer demand.

Delta’s control system for palletizing robots applies a high-performance PAC motion control host with its DMCNET industrial communication bus, 4 high-performance ASDA-A2 series servo drives and its matching motors. In the meantime, the human-machine communication and interaction, thanks to MODBUS TCP and hand-held demonstrator, realizes a complete set of system solution.

Palletizing robots launched to promote factory’s production for labor-inten-sive enterprises while reducing the enormous labor cost. However, current technology demonstration and program route editing are quite difficult, and the requirement for the robot operator’s knowledge is quite high. Moreover, bit demonstration and program editing take a large amount of time, which is the main difficulty that limits enterprises to use stackers. The control system for palletizing robots proposed by Delta was developed after Delta took an in-depth research to understand stacker’s key technol-ogy and difficulty. The system is easy to operate, well targeted, and has played an important role in helping enterprises realize the idea of “machines replacing people.” Delta PAC control system for

Delta SA team redirected its family day funds andprovided it to an orphanage

Children in Home Tekna received basic necessities from Delta team

Delta announced its re-organization in the middle of this year and will apply three new business categories, “Power Electronics,” “Automation,” and “Infrastructure”, to cope with the changes in the global market and provide customers with suitable solutions. New icons have been designed accordingly, which starts with the services and core value of Delta’s business groups as the main concepts to visualize the three categories into the icons. The signs have been officially launched with the basic regulations of their applications.

As for the new icons design, the outer ring represents power electron orbiting, with the three major business categories surrounded by the ring respectively. “Power Electronics” uses the intuitive image of power and resistance as the origin of highly-efficient power;”Automation” shows the automatic production carried out by a robotic arm, while implying its significance in building automation. “Infrastructure” uses a communication waveform to outline the image of a city, supplemented by Netcom signal and power network to symbolize the ubiquitous information communication and energy infrastructure in the city. The three icons are highly comprehensive and consistent with Delta’s logo. It is hoped the three signs will clearly communicate the development direction of Delta’s three major business categories, allowing people to appreciate Delta’s integral solutions and services.

For more application examples of the icons, please visit http://mydelta/company/co_cis.asp

Delta South Africa (SA) team made a decision to redirect our family day funds and pool this together with our CSR event in order to spend some quality time at an orphanage called Home Tekna. Home Tekna is a safe haven for approximately 49 children who come from broken or abusive homes where they were mentally and/or physically abused.

Over the past twenty years Home Tekna has been providing these children, from the surrounding Bela-Bela community, with a home and basic necessities like food, clothing and education. This is made possible through donations and support that they receive from members of the community. Thus, Delta SA team utilized the funds that we had available along with some personal donations from the Delta SA team members in order to meet some of the home’s immediate needs. The home received a much needed tumble dryer for the house washing room as 49 sets of clothing must be a challenge to wash and dry every day! In addition, some pyjamas and toiletry supplies (age and gender appropriate) were handed to each child.

The event was a blessing for the Delta SA team and we trust that the children felt special and loved. Thanks to Delta and the team for making the event a great success!

Delta Shanghai Operations and R&D Center received the highest platinum certification of LEED-EB (for current buildings) from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This was also the second time the same building received recognition of LEED again after receiving the golden certification of LEED-NC (for newly constructed buildings) in 2013, making it the first Delta green building that received double LEED certifications. Delta’s Shanghai R&D Building has been implementing energy-efficient renovations by adopting Delta's own products and energy-efficient solutions, with 10.9% of reduction in the total amount of power consumption (excluding electricity used by data center and labs) for the three years between 2014 and 2016. It received recog-nition with double full score in LEED’s efficiency of energy use and green traffic, with up to 60% of savings in power, as compared to those buildings under similar geographical features in international destinations. The saving in water can reach up to 46%, compared to LEED design criteria.

The Shanghai Operation Center utilized many Delta’s self-developed energy-efficient products, including the InfraSuite datacenter solution with an average yearly PUE value of only 1.40 , which was better than the gold level of Green Grid for data center green services, as well as the industrial automation products and elevator/air conditioning inverter that offered effective reduction in power consumption. Moreover, the use of Delta BEMS building energy management system to monitor energy use in buildings also helped realize high energy efficiency, thus earning the subsidy granted by Shanghai City’s office of energy efficiency for converting to LED efficient lighting.

In addition, 11 EV charging poles have been set on the ground and underground garage of the Shanghai R&D Building for cost-free charging by Delta employees. Electric-powered buses are also used for employee commuting, which offer approximately 63.5 tons of annual reduction in emission of CO2 compared to gas-fueled vehicles, thus also earning the full-score recognition in LEED criteria for green transportation.

In Beijing, the China Smart Data Technologies and Services Summit and the 2017 Smart Data Center Construction and Operation Forum is currently ongoing. Delta’s MDC, modular data center, solution was awarded the “2016-2017 Data Center Solutions of Excellence Award” by the organizers. The award represents recogni-tion by experts in the industry for the pioneering efforts of Delta regarding the implementation of MDC in the basic infrastructure of data centers within the country.

I also look after EV Charging Systems, LED, Vivitek products and ESDBD among other areas of business.

The best part about my role is that I can work with a great team, both locally and overseas. At Delta Energy Systems Australia I am working with international colleagues in different BUs and learning from their experiences to bring the best products and services to our region.

I really enjoy the great Australian outdoors and spend my time off going bushwalking and camping with my family. This country has many sites of natural beauty which I am always proud to introduce to my many teammates from overseas.

What I like most about Delta are the great people I work with. I’m lucky to work with such a friendly and supportive team. I also like some of the challenges that the role brings. Every day here is an opportunity for growth and I can truly say that there are never two days that are the same at Delta Energy Systems Australia.

Delta CP2000 VFD

Delta Controls has released the CP2000 line of variable frequency drives (VFD). This release is targeted toward the commercial HVAC and building automation markets allowing the VFDs to be sold into healthcare facilities, offices, educational facilities and more.

The CP2000’s industrial pedigree gives it an advantage in the commercial market as industrial applications require products to withstand more harsh environments. This means that the CP2000 is more durable and reliable than the drives offered by competitors. This advantage is coupled with Delta Electronics’ industry leading reputation as the world’s number one power supply provider.

To support the launch, Delta Controls has launched a joint, direct sales campaign. Mike Carson of Delta Electronics IABG. has joined up with the Delta Controls sales team to personally visit the largest Delta Partners and introduce the products and their benefits. This has been well received by the team and it’s expected that a swell in sales will result.

Emphasizing “Together” from our brand message, Delta Controls and Delta Electronics have teamed up on everything from shipping logistics and support to technical documentation and launch plans. The resulting launch is a shining example of the teamwork that can be achieved across business units.

Owing to the government’s newly launched “proactive infrastructure project,” whose main budget is dedicated to railed transport, transportation has become a hot issue. The public has begun to focus on transportation infrastructure, operational status and the economic effects brought on by development. But, do you know how much energy is used a year in Taiwan? How much CO2 is released? Is the project in line with the mainstream green transportation trends around the world?

What is the current state of Taiwan? According to the latest 2016 Energy Statistics Handbook, transportation energy usage has decreased from 14.5% of the total national consumption in 2000 to 12% in 2016. Although it may seem like there was a decrease, still, the 30% increase in total energy consumption between 2000 and 2016 must also be taken into account. Considering the absolute consumption values, the transportation sector has consumed 14.07 million kiloliters of oil. The growth in consumption has not shown signs of slowing down. Transportation is still one of the largest energy users, along with the industrial sectors, housing and the service industry. Regarding carbon emissions, while every nation is trying to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, Taiwan still uses 30% of their total oil imports on transportation. This oil addiction is second only to non-energy fuel consumption (mainly petroleum product manufacturing). Among the 250 million tons of carbon emitted by Taiwan in 2014, transportation account-ed for 35.7 million tons; not only is it higher than the service industry (32.9 million tons) and housing (31.7 million tons), it is second only to the much criticized industrial sector (120 million tons).

Gas guzzlers! Transportation energy consumption andCO2 emissions continue to increase

The August 15th blackout expose many key problems, besides blamed officials bowing out of office, it caused Firstly, we must assess the importance of the transport agency. According to the data from IEA (International Energy Agency), the transportation sector contributes to 23% of the world’s greenhouse emissions. In nearly 40% of all nations, transportation is the biggest source of greenhouse gases and close to 80% of the INDCs proposed by different nations includes emission reductions for transportation. In addition to high emissions, the sector is also dependent on fossil fuels (primarily oil). There have been rapid developments in renewable energy sources, and in 2014, 18.3% of the world energy supply is renewable. Nonetheless, progress in the transportation sector has been slow. Even in German, a model of eco-living, only 5% of the energy used in the transportation sector is renewable, a far cry from the 40% energy provided by green power for the country.Delta since 2005, themes of “low-carbon transportation” and “green transportation” will also be incorporated for the first time, guiding visitors to imagine the brand new looks of the future low-carbon city.

After close evaluation, we can see that in both energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, the Taiwanese transportation sector shows no signs of decrease. When discussing alternate energy sources, reduced fossil fuel dependency or even a national decrease in carbon emissions, transportation is a crucial factor that must be considered.

A nation of cars! Use of public transportneeds to increase

After looking at the data, then analyzing usage behav-iors, one of the main reasons of the constant increase in emissions caused by transportation is the introduction of new public transport systems such as, MRT, high speed rail and air transport. These new systems stimulate an increase in transportation demand.

In the past 20 years (1995 - 2015), the Taiwanese rail system has grown from 9,499 million Passenger-Kilome-ters to 27,111 million Passenger-Kilometers, almost tripling in size. Aviation has also more than doubled from 38,247 to 80,055 million Passenger-Kilometers. In contrast, highway bus services have experienced slow growth from 16,151 to 17,573 million Passenger-Kilometers. Total passengers have

also experienced similar growth; rail transport has grown 6.6 times in the past 20 years. The total passenger count reached 1 billion in 2014, just the MRT alone contributed 700 million passengers.

These increases are not a bad sign. Encouraging people to take public trans-port to reduce personal vehicle use is not only a strategy for emission reduction used by many countries, but also a good way to combat air pollution. According to Environmental Protection Administration, emissions from transportation (mainly diesel vehicles) are the biggest source of pollution in Taiwan. Besides particulates (PM2.5), car exhausts also contain nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), all of which are the main components of air pollution.

However, encouraging the public to reduce personal vehicle use and instead take public transport is no easy feat. Looking at the statistics, Taiwan is truly a nation of traffic. In the last 20 years, the number of motor vehicles per hundred people increased from 61.8 to 91.1. Additionally, there was a historic high of 95.8 in 2012. Under these disadvantageous conditions, public transport use has been stagnant at 15%. It has been proven difficult to counter the public habit of using their personal vehicles. Even in Taipei, with its robust public transport system, public transport use is only above 30%, a big difference from the 50 to 60 percent use in international green cities.

Fighting pollution! Using public transport and electric cars in tandem

Professor Ling Liang Tai of the department of transportation technology and management at Feng Chia University outlined three key conditions to successfully persuade the public to abandon their personal vehicles and embrace public transport. The public transport system must have robust infrastructure and numerous buses or trains, and it has to be affordable for the public. Under the government policy of delib-erately controlling the price of goods and services, Taiwan is only competitive on the third point. However, this has caused the public companies to operate at a loss. Looking at the other aspects of these public services, from equipment to shuttle buses and the punctuality of the services, there is still much room for improvement. This could explain why the public is still partial to the use of their personal vehicles.

Currently, there are three mainstream ideas for promoting green transportation: Avoid, Shift and Improve. The first two strategies are used to encourage the use of public transport. In recent years, the international push to change to electric vehicles falls under the third strategy, directly reduc-ing energy consumption and emissions through low carbon technologies. From Norway, France, United Kingdom, Germany and other European countries to India, these countries have all been discussing policy strategies to ban the sale of combustion vehicles.

In Taiwan, the electric bike markets have been performing well with 40,000 bikes being sold this year. However, electric cars have not been doing well. Even if the broadly defined green vehicles (hybrid cars) are taken into consideration, only 8,400 were sold in 2016, constituting only 2% of all new cars sold in the year. The Industrial Development Bureau estimates there are fewer than 500 pure electric cars in Taiwan currently. Most owners are worried about the lack of infrastructure for charging their cars, leading to doubts about the efficiency and sustainability of driving electric cars.

In conclusion, to stop the energy consumption and emissions caused by transportation in Taiwan, the basic ideas are: reduce the growth in personal vehicle use, stimulate the use of public transportation, and upgrade the vehicles. There are several policies enacted by governments around the world that Taiwan can learn from, for example, passing laws that set standards for car emissions to eliminate polluting vehicles, giving incentives to buy electric cars, promoting public vehicle rentals (e.g. U Bikes), promoting the economy of sharing, and implementing congestion charges like several other nations have been doing for years. All these changes can increase the cost of operating personal vehicles with high energy consumption, encouraging the public to use more eco-friendly modes of transportation.

Realistically, reducing the environmental impact of transportation does not only involve changing trans-portation habits, but also includes a change in the environment of a city and the lifestyle of its citizens. In fact, the oldest and most eco-friendly of transportation is our own two feet. It is a pity that in Taiwan now, pedestrians are usually given the least amount of rights on the roads and walking is also the most dangerous option. This is why many green cities promoting low carbon footprints and inhabitable surroundings understand the importance of improving areas with heavy foot traffic, apart from just promoting the benefits of cycling and public transport. Besides spending money on updating equipment and increasing the density of the transportation network, it is unclear whether the infrastructure program enthusiastically discussed by the government this year has taken this into consideration.

Personal car ownership has been steadily rising in the past 20 years, to the pointwhere almost everyone owns a vehicle (Source: 2016 energy consumption booklet)

Even though this is the fourth Green Building Exhibition, each one has been an innovative progress. Our brand new contents include: the picture book "Namasia's Robot" and AR interactive game, the Qumi interactive projection of Delta America Headquarters, an actual electric vehicle charging pile, the World Games Main Stadium in projection mapping, replays of the film "Kaohsiung Miracle" to showcase the City's former glories, successful international cases such as Ako power station in Japan, and the magnificent 8k ultra high definition film "Water with Life". Attendees might have noticed that there are many new products in "Wim’s Home", such as residential energy storage equipment.

Even with more than 100 pings (approximately 330 m2) of exhibition area, a much larger space than that in Huashan Creative Park (Taipei) last year, we still filled up the spot with dazzling new items. The most popular display among children is our "Future City, My Low-Carbon Home" power grid interactive games area. Many visitors spent a lot of time browsing the area, so the guided tours easily exceeded a full hour. The exhibition at Pier-2 Art Center attracted many families. Some of the items on display (such as the charging pile and model buildings) did not survive the children's passionate "testing", and required repairs or even replacements. I guess you could call it an on-site stress test!

Fourth exhibition with constantly updated content

The previous three exhibitions, held in Paris, Beijing and Taipei, respectively, had displayed the 20 green buildings donated by Delta. After this exhibition was confirmed to be held at the EcoMobility World Festival 2017 at the Pier-2 Art Center in Kaohsiung City, the Delta Electronics Foundation decided to emphasize the "transportation" theme of the event, and began to collect various ecomobility reports and international news. We also looked for information on Green Port because the event was held at the harbor area of Kaohsiung City. When we contacted the Taiwan International Ports Corporation, they were surprised that we wanted to showcase the "offshore power system". We are very grateful to our various sources for the latest updates, such as astonishing news of the upgrade to electric ferries for the commute between Qishan and Qijin, and the introduction of Made-in-Taiwan electric fish cargo trolleys on the Japan market, which can even create revenue by selling extra power.

The first Delta Green Building Exhibition held in southern Taiwan. Numerous brand new interactive technologies and green transportation products were on display.

The world’s first high-lumen 8K resolution projector

The most astonishing product in the exhibition was Delta’s world-leading high-lumen 8K projector, which was introduced to the public by the first 8K environmental documentary, Water with Life. The documentary was produced in collaboration with Japan’s NHK Enterprise and shows the beauty of water in Taiwan with high resolution. It is hoped that the documentary can inspire the public to cherish our water resources more. Delta’s founder, Mr. Bruce Cheng, especially went to Kaohsiung for the opening ceremony of Delta Green Building Exhibition to introduce this world-leading 8K projector himself. The resolution of 8K is 7680 x 4320 pixels. To be more precise, if a Full HD TV’s resolution level is one, an 8K is 16 times better than a Full HD. A general HD TV shows only 35% of the natural colors, yet the color coverage rate of an 8K projector is as high as 75%. When watching the 8K documentary, many media people were amazed as even the fog was visible on the screen.

Delta’s energy-saving performance is highly recognized

by clients and distributors

In order to show Delta’s appreciation to the clients and distributors for their long-term support, the Brand Management Office especially organized a VIP Night on October 20, inviting guests and managers of all business units to experience Delta’s company culture and learn the application performance of the energy-saving products. Managers from business units such as DSBU, BASBU, LTBU, and IABG, clients, and distributors all attended the VIP Night. Chief Brand Officer Ms. Shan-Shan Guo, Spokesperson Mr. Jesse Chou, and Deputy Executive Director Mr. Wim Chang, guided the tour in person. The General Manager of DSBU, Mr. Jeff Fu, also introduced the documentary personally, showing the beauty of water in Taiwan displayed by the 8K projector, the guests were deeply impressed.

The Foundation hired a number of interns on top of the Delta volunteers during the holidays to assist with the guided tours. We joked about having to stand for long periods of times every day, and called ourselves the "stand-up warriors". This group of graduate students was very passionate and lively. Even if they were not on a shift, they would chat online via Internet group. After days of practice on the actual battle field, towards the end of the exhibition, each of our interns were able to give professional guided tours. We are happy to see more environmental protectionists in Taiwan!

On the final day of the exhibition, the Founda-tion, insisting on the spirit of appreciation for resources, carefully removed the reusable exhibition items to be given to factories or schools. We tried to minimize the environmen-tal impact and carbon footprint from the exhibi-tion, even our potted plants found new homes on the rooftops of the department buildings of our interns' schools.

Looking back at the month-long exhibition, we worked hard but also had a blast. I am originally from Kaohsiung, and from now on, the Port of Kaohsiung and Pier-2 have given me a brand new impression with the unique memory of the Green Building Exhibition.
