“501” River News - December 2018 - 3
From the DirectorThe purpose of Christmas is for Christians to celebrate the birth of Jesus. For others, it is a public holiday to celebrate with family and friends and to give and receive gifts. For me, Christmas is about giving, being with family and making new memories. I look forward to the Christmas season every year for many reasons: Christmas music, Christmas shopping, making and giving gifts to others, seeing beautiful Christmas lights and decorations, baking cookies, playing games, seeing my son in his school program and watching him get so excited for Christmas in general, and being with my family.
The week of December 2nd-8th is National Handwashing Awareness Week. With cold and flu season upon us it is very important for all of us to be aware of personal hygiene, which begins and ends with our hands. While researching this topic I read a few interesting statistics and wanted to share this one with you. A typical human sneeze exits the body at about 200 miles per hour and emits around 40,000 droplets into the air. This information is just one reason as to why we need awareness to protect ourselves and others. So, why is handwashing important? Healthy hands are happy hands and happy hands make for happy and healthy homes. It helps prevent the spread of germs and it reminds everyone to take cleanliness and hygiene seriously.
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!! HAVE A SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON J

Empowered Movement, a year-long series focusing on balance, strength, endurance and mobility continues to move forward with great success! Thank you to Mary Crittenden for presenting at our November Coaching Session. December 12th will be our Coaching Session talking about Mindfulness.
December’s Cold MoonDecember is the month when winter begins for most of the Northern Hemisphere, and the full moon is called the Cold Moon. The Old English/Anglo-Saxon name is the Moon Before Yule, while another name is Wolf Moon, however, this is more common for the January Full Moon.

Staying Healthy During the HolidaysWhile the holidays are a time of gatherings with family and friends, they can also be a source of stress, as exercise schedules might be disrupted for shopping excursions and rich holiday meals make it difficult to adhere to a particular diet. Staying healthy can be a challenge during this time of year, especially for seniors.
From rich meals to tempting and tasty homemade snacks, the holidays are a time for many to indulge in food -- or overindulge. Try to plan meals with other events in mind.
For example, if a big dinner is planned for New Year’s Eve, consider serving a lighter lunch of salad or soup. You don’t want to deny yourself of the food you like to eat at this time of year, but you don’t want to gorge yourself either.
Drinking water is one way you can stay healthy during the holidays. “Senior citizens, especially, need to drink plenty of fluids, as not drinking enough water could cause hospitalization. To make it easier to stay hydrated, have water easily accessible at home and keep bottled water in a purse or bag when running errands.
Some seniors must follow special diets, such as one that is low in sodium. It can be difficult to adhere to a diet during busy, stressful times, especially if there aren’t any healthy options available. When people get stressed, they tend to overeat and don’t stick to their diets. To make it easier to follow dietary guidelines, keep healthy options like fresh-cut vegetables and fruit on hand.
Drinking too much can impair functions, and for some senior citizens, drinking alcohol with certain medications can have adverse side effects. Consider offering fun, alcohol-free drinks so everyone can celebrate the holidays.
In many parts of the country, the holidays are synonymous with cold weather and snow. To stick to an exercise schedule, bundle up for a walk around the block if the sidewalks are dry. If it’s snowing or icy outside, drive to an indoor shopping mall and walk a few laps while window-shopping or you can always join our exercise group at the center.

Christmas StockingsThe origin of the Christmas stocking is thought to originate in the life of Saint Nicholas. While there are no written records of the origin of the Christmas Stocking, there are popular legends that attempt to tell the history of this Christmas tradition. One such legend has several variations, but the following is a good example:
Very long ago, there lived a poor man and his three very beautiful daughters. He had no money to get his daughters married, and he was worried what would happen to them after his death. St. Nicholas was passing through when he heard the villagers talking about the girls. St. Nicholas wanted to help but knew that the old man wouldn’t accept charity. He decided to help in secret. After dark he threw three bags of gold through an open window, one landed in a stocking. When the girls and their father woke up the next morning, they found the bags of gold and were, of course, overjoyed. The girls were able to get married and live happily ever after. Other versions of the story say that Saint Nicholas threw the three bags of gold directly into the stockings which were hung by the fireplace to dry.
This led to the custom of children hanging stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas. Sometimes the story is told with gold balls instead of bags of gold. That is why three gold balls, sometimes represented as oranges, are one of the symbols for St. Nicholas. And so, St. Nicholas is a gift-giver. This is also the origin of three gold balls being used as a symbol for pawnbrokers.
A tradition that began in a European country originally, children simply used one of their everyday socks, but eventually special Christmas stockings were created for this purpose. These stockings are traditionally used on St. Nicholas Day although in the early 1800s, they also came to be used on Christmas Eve.
Many families create their own Christmas stockings with each family member’s name applied to the stocking so that Santa will know which stocking belongs to which family member.

Hopeful Journey – For Grandmothers Raising GrandchildrenOur first meeting was held on November 13th. We still have some extra seats available if you are interested in this program. Our next meeting will be on December 18th from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Hopeful Journey is a year-long series designed to give you the hero status you deserve and the encouragement to continue to fight for the lives of the grandchildren you love. Because they haveexperienced such complicated family dynamics, heart breaking loss, abuse and neglect, it has broken their hearts and affected their brain development. Understanding the devastating impact of trauma on brain development and function makes it easier to be more patient and purposeful with your grandchildren. In addition to understanding, you will also be given the tools you need to help yourgrandchildren experience Post Traumatic Growth rather than Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Creatingthe Healing Circles for your family will give you greater confidence and courage.
• Circle One: Safety, basic needs, and structure• Circle Two: Family gatherings that create identity and foster a sense of belonging• Circle Three: Clear rules, authority agreements and non-toxic relationships
These Healing Circles are simply containers for the healing ingredients of joy and love, a powerfulcombination for delivering hope to children of trauma and to you!
Taking care of yourself, un-breaking the hearts of your grandchildren, and re-writing their brains forsuccess. These are three of the key responsibilities of grandparents raising grandchildren in a high tech, high stress, unpredictable world.
If you are a woman. 55 years or older, raising relative children in Alpena County you are invited toparticipate in this series. The following is a brief list of benefits to those who sign up:
• Monthly presentations focusing on the resources available to families in Alpena County• A book “Courageous Love” giving the tools and confidence individuals need to run this parenting marathon• A resource binder along with a composition notebook for journaling• Miscellaneous stress relieving tools
Our next meeting will be held on December 11th at 1:00 pm. If you are interested in participating or have any questions, please call BJ or Annie at 356-3585. This series is limited to the first 20 people signing up.
