The Japanese Gardens Social Club publishes the Socialite, whose general purpose is to inform residents of various activities that have been held and will be held in the near future. The Socialite is not intended to be, nor should it be, a publication to provide a forum for residents to express opinions on issues. Any material of such a nature will not be included within or distributed with the Socialite.

Social Club Updatescontributed by Patrick Mudd, Social Club President

Hello and Happy December. November was a busy month seeing many of our northern residents return for the season. We pulled off another great Pancake Breakfast, saw the Ladies Club kick things off with a Pizza lunch, listened to some excellent guitar playing by Jay Smith at Social Club, and saw bocce and pickleball start. We are looking forward to a superb Thanksgiving Dinner hosted by Judy Duncan and friends and are waiting anxiously for Santa to arrive.

December will be another fun-filled month

with the usual activities. Pancake Breakfast on 12/1/18, Social Club Wine and Cheese on 12/6/07 at 7:00 p.m., and Luminaries and Carols 12/21/17 at 6:00 p.m. And be sure to save room for eating our weight in Christmas cookies donated by all the wonderful bakers in the Park. Christmas Dinner will be hosted by Charlie and Dodi Lain on Christmas evening, and we will ring in 2018 with a New Year’s Eve dance on the 31st .

Looking forward to January, please note that Junktique will be held January 14–19. This is a very important event for the Social Club. Junktique provides the majority of the Social Club funding. Please be sure to read Sanford’s update later in this issue. Also, please reserve the second Friday of each month from January through April at 7:00 p.m. for a new entertainment opportunity. Dodi Lain will be providing details.

Finally thanks to all the volunteers who make our social activities a success. Have a joyful and relaxing holiday season!

contributed by Wayne Neff, Social Club Vice President

Glad to see things are picking up around here at Japanese Gardens!

Just a reminder that the Wine & Cheese party is the Social Club event for December and will be Thursday, December 6, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. It will include wine and non-alcoholic beverages, cheese and crackers. Everyone is invited to come and have a good social night.

Friday, December 21, (Rain date Saturday 22), we will be having the Christmas caroling and luminaries, which will begin at 6 p.m., where we meet and go out into the park and sing carols to the residents who are unable to leave their units. When done we will return to the club house for a night of singing carols with karaoke, hot cocoa, and cookies.

All residents, renters, and their guests are welcome to join in all Social Club activities. Hope to see you there.

GENERAL INTERESTDecember Pancake Breakfastcontributed by Rita Mudd

Our next pancake breakfast is coming up really fast, as it will be held on Saturday, December 1. This may be your first Christmassy celebration of the season, so it will be an opportunity to dig out your holiday duds. As usual, we will be serving gluten-free sausages, eggs (scrambled or over-easy), all-you-can-eat pancakes, juice, coffee or tea. If you still have Thanksgiving guests hanging around, feel free to bring them along, as this is open to all Japanese Gardens residents and their guests. If you are hosting youngsters (or simply those young at heart), we have milk and chocolate milk available also.

Doors open at 8:00 a.m., and tickets remain at $5 each whether you buy them in advance or at the door. However, beginning in January, tickets sold at the door will be $6, so be on the lookout for your friendly neighborhood ticket seller. Tickets can also be purchased from Pat or Rita Mudd, 720 Gloriosa, 651-261-9698.

Our first breakfast of the season, held on November 3rd, was a great success with 163 tickets sold. It was great to see so many returning residents.

Junktique Update from the Junktique Teamcontributed by Sanford Swiggum

Good news! The Junktique sheds are busting at the seams! We have a large inventory of good, usable items. They may be a little difficult to find because the sheds are packed so full. However, we are having a fall/pre-holiday sale up at the sheds on Thursday, December 6th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. so come on up and we will help you hunt for the item(s) you might need. Even if you don’t need anything, come on up and browse. You never know what you might find.

Just a reminder, our huge Annual Junktique sale will occur the week of January 14th through

the 19th. We will accept donations until then unless our sheds fill to capacity. If that happens, we will begin a list of items to be picked up during the sale week. Your donations are greatly appreciated as well as your volunteerism during the sale. We need all the help we can get.

Speaking of volunteerism, if you haven’t heard, the current Junktique Team is retiring after the upcoming January sale. So, it would certainly be welcomed if an individual, a couple, or a team of residents would step forward and agree to coordinate Junktique for the 2019–2020 season. The Social Club Executive Committee will be putting together a Brainstorming Sub-committee in the near future to consider options for the continuation of Junktique. Please speak with any one of the current Junktique Team members or any one of the Social Club officers if you are interested in serving on this committee or would consider coordinating Junktique for next season. On-the-job training is offered as well as ongoing mentoring for the task.

JG Book Nookcontributed by Rosemarie (Ro) Cipra, Librarian

You’re invited to check out the latest selection of books that have been added to the library in the past few weeks.

As previously stated in the November Socialite, instructions for checking out the “carded” newer books are posted outside the “Regular Print” cupboard.

If you take out a carded book (regular or large print), that card with your name and date of checkout is to be put into the plastic box inside the cupboard. When that book is returned to the library, a librarian will cross your name off that book’s card, insert it into the returned book pocket, and put it back on the appropriate shelf for another resident to enjoy. NO carded books are to leave the library with the card still in the book.

Attached to the outside of the Regular Print

Christmas Dinnercontributed by Dodi Lain

Christmas dinner will be served on December 25 at 5:30 p.m.; doors open 4:30 p.m. The menu is turkey, ham, and all the trimmings. Tickets are $9.00 for residents and renters and $11.00 for guests.

Please join us for an evening of good food, good friends, prizes, and entertainment.

12/31/2018, 8:30 p.m.–12:30 a.m., ClubhouseOnce again, we will hold a fantastic New

Year’s Eve party at the clubhouse with live music, party favors, and great fun! This year’s music is “Joyce and Doug,” and the tickets will be free (yes, you read it right, free!). Guests from outside the park will be charged $10 to attend. Doors will open at 7:30, music starts at 8:30, and we will have a toast with your favorite beverage at 10:30.

So bring your tickets, a snack to share, your favorite beverage, and your dancing shoes to kick off another great social season at Japanese Gardens.

Admittance will be by ticket only, so get your tickets from Elaine Barton (492-9608) or Barb Witt (443-812-2728). You must provide a name to get a ticket and please, if you’re holding a ticket and can’t attend at the last minute, let Elaine or Barb know. There’s always a waiting list for this event.

Stay safe this holiday season, connect with your friends and neighbors, and ring in the new year in style!

Sunday Special Bingocontributed by Carol Sabatini for Dee Coull

In order to be a lucky winner, you must come to the clubhouse for Sunday Special Bingo on December 9 at 2:00 p.m. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early in order to buy your packs and select your lucky seat. Ten game packs are $5. The last game costs $1 per card and “winner takes all.” Questions? Call Helen Haggerty.

Rules and Regulationscontributed by Linda Hoynoski

Friendly Reminders from your Rules and Regulations Committee:

• All golf carts must be registered at the office. • All pets must be registered at the office each

year.• Help eliminate the need for speed bumps by

slowing down.Fines will be imposed if rules are broken.

Trees and Groundscontributed by Patty DeMey

We are off and running with a grounds cleanup day and hanging baskets in the works. We need another person or two to help water the baskets. It is easiest with a golf cart, but the last two years it was done by one person out of the tailgate of her car. I will provide you with 5-gallon buckets. We each pick a day of the week to do the watering. We only do the ones on Teahouse. It takes less than an hour based on how many people you talk to. So two more volunteers would be great. Call me if you are interested.

Veterans Day Coffeecontributed by Jean Schoener, Memorial Committee

Thank you for joining us at the Veterans Coffee celebrated on November 12th. It is so moving to gather our JG veterans together and celebrate their service. Thank you, John Taylor,

for being the our emcee and Ron Emmons for the music. Thanks Memorial Committee, Dick Brasseur, Nancy Cockcroft, Jerry Henry, Ken Schoener, and Jim Therrien for all you do. Thanks to volunteers Donna Brasseur and Pat Hicks for your help as well. We are proud to be Americans!

Remember, you can support our committee with the purchase of a brick for the Veterans Memorial or the Memory Walkway. Fifty dollars buys a brick, which is a great way to remember a loved one or the year you purchased your home and the state you’re from. All monies go back to the Park in some way. Our last big purchase was the ice machine. We are so happy to see it used continuously, a great addition for all. Information is in the office. As always ask Kelly!

Attention, Veterans! Time-Sensitive Offer by Comcastcontributed by Ron Emmons

On November 8th our Comcast representative gave a very interesting and informative presentation. She will be here again in January.

For those who missed the meeting, I would like to point out one of the topics that was discussed. Comcast likes veterans and employs many of them in their company. They have a Military Appreciation offer for their customers. Information can be found on their website at www.xfinity.com/military. This offer expires on December 31, 2018.

GROUP ACTIVITIESJG Women’s Clubcontributed by Co-Presidents: Kathie Girouard and Linda Michelsen

The Women’s Club will hold a regular meeting on Tuesday, December 4th at 9:30 in the clubhouse. Sign-up sheets for the Christmas Luncheon will be available. Please make your choice and sign up under that selection. The cost is $20 per lady.

This years’ Christmas Luncheon will be held Tuesday, December 11th at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice. Three menu choices are available, and two of them are gluten-free. The choices are: a Napa Valley chicken salad (gluten-free); salmon filet (gluten-free); and beef Bordeaux. Is your mouth watering yet? We will gather at the facility at 11:30, and luncheon will be served at noon. The special door prizes are the trees and wreaths that the JG ladies decorated at the November WC gathering. Directions will be available if you need them.

These are the only two gatherings in

December. We will meet again on January 8th. More information on the January programs will be in the January Socialite.

All ladies in the park—owners and renters—are welcome at any time. If you are unable to attend weekly, we will enjoy your company whenever you are free to come.

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact Kathie Girouard at 941-218-6670 or [email protected].

Painting Classcontributed by Betty Reznicek

If you ever dreamed of painting in watercolor or Acrylic, please call me at 941-497-5659 and talk to me about it. I have been sharing my knowledge of painting for over 30 years here in JG and would like to continue doing so.

One year I had 17 interested people and last year it was down to one, so I would like to continue if there are folks interested.

We always meet on Monday morning from 9 a.m. thru 11.30 a.m. Please call.

Bocce Bocce Boccecontributed by Janet Henry

We look forward to another fun-filled season of Bocce as we start our official games on January 3, 2019 through March 14, 2019 on the NEW, completely renovated courts. There are two Thursday sessions—8:30 a.m. & 10:00 a.m. (Please note the change in time from previous years.) We have room for 32 people at each session. We play three games with different teams each week (just for fun—no stress involved). We are hoping to see experienced & inexperienced players, new residents, long-time residents, and renters join in the fun. Please arrive 10–15 minutes early to give us time to arrange the teams. The courts are located in the northeast corner of the park.

We want to thank Sanford Swiggum for all of his hard work keeping up the refinished courts over the hot summer months and all those who help out with watering during the winter.

Thanks to all those who continue to support our fundraising projects by buying 50/50 raffle tickets from our faithful sales crew and donating your clean, empty aluminum cans. For those of you who donate crushed cans, please make sure your cans are completely flattened. Anyone willing to help with this project, please contact Jerry Henry at 313-882-1417.

We look forward to seeing y’all at the courts!

The Website (https://JapaneseGardensHoa.WildApricot.Org)

The website continues to evolve and grow. Please visit the website occasionally to check out changes. I try to alert you to changes through Announcements on the website and by posting on the Facebook page. Sometimes I forget.

As you may recall from last Spring, a major change in philosophy resulted in several pages becoming “public”—anyone that looks up the URL can see those pages. To view the private pages, one must login. These are some of the private pages: Board of Directors, Social Club, Women’s Club, Activity/Club pages, Announcements, Owner Directory, Renter Directory, Junktique, etc.

2018 New Owners page was updated November 8th; 17 homes with new owners are listed now. If you are a new owner and your name is not listed, please contact me.

Club pages: Refresher classes (one on one) for Page Editors are ongoing. Contact me to schedule an appointment please.

2018–19 Directory

The final Directory was okayed to print November 6th. Your copy should accompany this Socialite. If you were absent from the Park and did not receive a Directory, please contact Jerry Hammerschmidt (521 Waterlily Dr.) for a copy.

Please take 15–20 minutes to read pages 2 through 11 of the Directory for information on several topics that you will find useful.

Please review your information for accuracy in both the alphabetical and street listings.

A determined effort was made to gather accurate information for the Directory (print and website) this year. Here are the details:

Oct 3: email sent to 338 profiles (profile means a shareholder household).

Oct 5: letter mailed to 81 profiles.I attempted to communicate with all

shareholder profiles. Four homes are unique; they have multiple, non-cohabitating, owners. Three homes have two profiles, one has three profiles, for a total of 419 profiles.

As of November 8th, 310 profiles responded and 109 profiles have not; this includes 15 undeliverable letters. (A 74% response rate.)

Opt in is Coming!

Do you remember this statement on the Directory Information Form?

I/we hereby grant do NOT grant (please check the appropriate box) the use of my/our email address via the website for communications by all Japanese Gardens entities.

Opt in replaces this manual process (that requires an Admin) with YOU directly in control of your needs. Wild Apricot describes it this way:

What does opt in mean? Opt in means you have given consent to receive emails from our organization, Japanese Gardens HOA. You can still pick and choose the kind of messages you want to receive.

Opt out means you have specifically denied your consent to receive emails from our organization. You will still receive confirmation emails in response to specific actions on your part, password reset and event registration confirmations, but you will not receive event announcements and other email blasts.

This is a key component in complying with anti-spam legislation, particularly the Canadian Anti-Spam Law (CASL).

One representative for EVERY HOME needs to fulfill this change. Please attend a session to learn; then you can actually “Opt In” or “Opt Out” at the session.

If you do NOT have an email address, please attend a session to document your status with the help of an Admin. Thank you.

Opt In: Learn and Enroll Drop In Sessions are scheduled Jan 7th through 13th1st Day Last Day Time Period LocationMon Jan 7 Fri Jan 11 11 am to 12:30 pm LibrarySat Jan 12 n/a 11 am to 12:30 pm Clubhouse (follows Welcome Coffee)Sun Jan 13 n/a 12 pm to 1:30 pm Clubhouse (before Sunday Bingo)

Renters—Hello! We’d love to add you to the 2018–19 Renter

page of the website to welcome you and help us know you all. Last year’s page had 13 renters (nine with their photo)—let’s surpass that number this season.

Most website content is available to renters. You must complete a JG Website Request Form for Renters to gain access; pick one up in the office. All renters must complete the form EACH SEASON.

A modified version of the owner “Phone Book” will be available as a PDF on the website this month.

Welcome back to Paradise! We are gearing up for a fun season of hitting that little white ball! This year we will again play the 2nd Saturday of the month starting December 8th at Pelican

Point, followed by The Links at Rotunda in January, Waterford GC in February, and March we will be at Calusa Lakes. Tee times will usually start around 12:00. Marc’s catering will continue to provide our clubhouse dinner for $13.00 per person starting in January. For December, pizza, salad and dessert will be on the menu again. Cost to be announced. As always, BYOB.

Please fill out the registration form and include a check made out to Linda DeVos for $15.00 per person or $30 per couple. Cash is also OK of course. Drop off or mail check or cash to Carol Lavigne, 5680 Hyacinth Rd. Please try to get this to Carol as soon as possible. This money is used for prizes and extra expenses.

This is a wonderful fun way to meet, play, and laugh with our JG neighbors. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns or requests.
