Making the Most of Our Time - Another Successful Year at HERZLIA I came across an interesting parable recently that I

wanted to share with you. "Imagine you had a bank account that deposited an amount of $86,400 each morning. The account carries over no balance from day to day,

allows you to keep no cash balance, and every evening cancels whatever part of the amount you had failed to use during the day. What would you do? Draw out every dollar each day!

We all have such a bank. Its name is Time. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever time you have failed to use wisely. It carries over no balance from day to day. It allows no overdraft. so you can't borrow against yourself or use more time than you have. Each day, the account starts fresh. Each night, it destroys an unused time. If you fail to use the day's deposits, it's your loss and you can't appeal to get it back.

There is never any borrowing time. You can't take a loan out on your time or against someone else's. The time you have is the time you have and that is that. Time management is yours to decide how you spend the time, just as with money you decide how you spend the money. It is never the case of us not having enough time to do things, but the case of whether we want to do them and where they fall in our priorities."

There never seems to be enough time to get everything done, however, when I look through the Highlights of this term and in fact review the entire year, I am completely amazed at the incredible variety of activities that take place across all our campuses. At Herzlia, we aim to use our time as productively as possible, we don't just teach to pass, we teach to educate. It is vitally important that our children are extended as much as possible, that they, in addition to Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, are exposed to Music, Art and Drama. Our pupils attend educational camps, visit exciting places and participate in communal events around the city.

I want to take this opportunity to wish our Matrics all the very best for their final exam results and to thank my wonderful staff for all their hard work, for going that extra mile, for their dedication and care. Then of course, there is you, the parents, many of whom have to sacrifice their time to ensure that kids are at school, sports practices, extra murals on time, parents who fetch, schlep, carrying, assist with homework projects, serve on the PTAs. Thank you all for another very successful year.

Wishing you all a happy holidays, drive safely and see you back in the new year. Chanukah Sameach!

Matric Art Exhibition By Lauren Palte

This year, Herzlia High School were fortunate enough to host their annual Matric art exhibition at The South African Jewish Museum. This event provides an opportunity for Matric students to reflect on their artistic work as it's a direct response to the work and engagement of the pupils over their three years in High School.

Pupils put up an exhibition of their work as part of their final exam process. It is helpful to frame the exhibition with insights from Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love, who speaks profoundly about the difficulties of creative work. Creative work is hard when we are trying to learn, grow and develop; technical and conceptual challenges often show us first our limitations before we find our way through to our potential. Gilbert encourages us to this work and acknowledges the bravery it requires. She says: 'Without bravery you will never know the world as richly as it longs to be known. Without bravery, your life will remain small - far smaller than you probably wanted your life to be."

At the event, visitors were encouraged, when walking around the exhibition, to reserve judgement about what they thought constitutes the most beautiful or skillful work, and rather look to connect with the journeys our pupils embarked on, and try to listen to their voices coming through the work. Read their artist's statements to hear their thinking.

Every year group is special for different reasons: but this group is marked by their willingness to work together and help and support one another. It was visible in the installation of this show, our pupils understood that they were putting on a group show as the Matric class, and individual interests came after. I love the way this exhibition has been a series of collaborative, generous and kind acts, particularly when artistic activity can be misunderstood as a lonely endeavour. I hope that you take with you into the world, this wonderful ability to celebrate each other's successes.

Art at the High School By Marc Falconer

"Art is not a plaything, but a necessity, and its essence, form, is not a decorative adjustment, but a cup into which life can be poured and lied to the lips and be tasted," said British author, journalist, literary critic and travel writer, Rebecca West "Artists are ... the most sensitive, most intellectually anarchic, most representative, most probing of people. The artist's ability to imagine what is not the self, to familiarise the strange, and to mystify the familiar - all this is the test of her or his power. The languages she or he uses and the social and historical context in which these signify are indirect and direct revelations of that power and its limitations ... "

In a very real sense, what our pupils are doing here is the most engaged, focused, selfdriven learning in the school - and it is also perhaps the most important. Not because of what Art can and does do in a society - any society - but also because it provides a model for how learning should be. The focusing as much on the process as on the product and the many failures and triumphs along that journey. But it is also much more important than that. Art, in its incontrovertible value, is to create a narrative and by so doing to make meaning: unapologetically, subjectively, sometimes provocatively ... often profoundly and surprisingly. As viewers of this exhibition and of the arts generally, we are privileged to be co-creators, co-meaning makers. As artist Alex Grey articulates: "When artists give form to revelation, their art can advance, deepen and potentially transform the consciousness of their community."

This is, I believe, one of experiences at Herzlia that are to be celebrated. And in this journey I would like to thank all the artists here on display: for your courage, insight and generosity in experience and sharing.

DEVELOPING EMPATHY AND RESPECT INCAPETO N BREAKING DOWN THE LEGACY OF STRUCTURAL APARTHEID

By Mel Slavin

Herzlia High School has been part of the The Marlene Silbert Interfaith Inter-cultural Youth Programme since its inception in 20 I I . This year, four Grade I O pupils, together with pupils from nine other schools in Cape Town, participated in the programme this year. These schools are of different religions and cultures. The programme is beneficial in developing empathy and respect amongst our youth as well as breaking down the legacy of structural Apartheid, as pupils from different areas have contact with each other for the first time.

The programme is committed to Human Rights and Social Justice and concludes with a Grade I I year spent in service at a tutoring programme held at the Amy Foundation with Bonteheuwel Primary. Four of our Grade I I students completed the tutoring programme this year. We are enormously grateful to Marlene Silbert for providing our school with the opportunity to participate in the programme and assisting us to have a more global perspective on complex issues facing our society.

JEWISH LIFE AND LEARNING l S EDUCATION0 TSIDE OF THECLASSROOMLearning About Tashlich Tashlich comes from the Hebrew word meaning 'to cast: referring to the intent to cast away our sins via this meaningful and ancient Jewish custom common to both Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities. Tashlich is usually performed on the first day of Rosh Hashanah. If the first day of Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat, Tash/ich is done on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. It may be performed throughout the I O Days of Repentance, or even until Hoshanah Rabba (the last day of Succot), except on Shabbat.

All students from Grade 7-11, as well as some Matrics, took part in the uplifting and serene Tashlich experience. This took place in the build-up to Yorn Kippur, where the students had a chance to step outside of the routine and daily classroom experience and venture out to the stream at the foot of Table Mountain. There they heard various talks from our staff about the power of water in Judaism and the ideas behind teshuvah (atoning for sins). At Herzlia Constantia on Tuesday 8 October (Erev Yorn Kippur) our Grade R's joined the Primary School to perform Tashlich by the stream up the road from the school.

Celebrating Succot During the week of Succot each class had a chance to spend some special time in our succah at school. What fun doing the mitzvah of eating in the succah. We spent time with all three Primary Schools and the Grade 7s at the Middle School, making some wonderful sukkah decorations. The students could take the decorations home to their family succot or use them to decorate our very on own school succot.

Shabbos Shuk Carnival In the build-up to The Shabbos Project, we set up our very own Middle School Shabbos Shuk carnival where the students and teachers were able to partake in a variety of different activities and games (all centred around the theme of Shabbos) and even tried their hand at bargaining for some shabbos treats at our Israeli run shuk!

All Heart and Soul at Herzlia Highlands Primary By Mike Ford

40 Days of Kindness Campaign

In celebration of Herzlia Highlands children and the 40 Days of Kindness Campaign, parents were invited to come and bless their child/children at a special Birkat Habanim ceremony at school - as is customary on ErevYom Kippur.

Highlands Celebrates Succot

We celebrated Succot by holding JLL lessons in the Succah and learning about the Lulav and Etrog. The Succah this year was particularly inviting and students were able to enjoy their break time activities in its cool shade. The children thoroughly enjoyed their lessons in the Succah and had such fun making the Succah decorations.

Grade 6 Visit to The Heart Museum at Groote Schuur Hospital

The Highands Grade 6's sat riveted as they listened to the exceptional Trace who shared her knowledge and wisdom with our group. After watching a short video on the life of Christiaan Barnard and his contributions to Medical Science, we toured the actual rooms, set up exactly as they were in 1967 when the first heart transplant in the world took place. This outing is a real eye opener, with so much to see and to learn. Our Grade 6s unanimously agreed that it was one of the best outings ever!

Cultural Evening

The Highlands Primary Cultural Evenings were held this week on Wednesday (Grades 4 and 6) and Thursday (Grade 5) evenings. Both evenings were most successful and our pupils brilliantly showcased their talents in Music, Art and Drama. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the show, Kol Hakavod to Mrs Geffen and Mrs Segal for putting together an amazing showcase.

ESTEAM Week

Moreh Kadar and Mrs Avis have joined forces and brought Science alive at Herzlia Constantia (ESTEAM Week). The acronym stands for Entrepreneurship, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics and all of these multi-facets of learning have been blended into our children's experiences.

Our families joined ESTEAM week one evening to have a chance to observe our Gr 4 - 6 Project-Based Learning (PBL) stations as well as to design and create optical illusions, code together and taste our scientifically created eats at the Science Cafe!

Our Gr 5 children guided by their teachers, Ms Lothian and Ms Haller, facilitated ESTEAM learning stations for Gr 1 - 6 in the hall. Throughout the week, children and teachers learnt so many new discoveries including the use of our brand new science laboratory telescopes.

Grandparents Tea

One of our highlights every year is hosting our Grandparents Tea. This function is always so well attended and this year was no different. This year we even had three great-grandparents. Our school was alive with the sound of music as our children performed their Disney play, while our guests enjoyed delicious eats served at a High Tea. Some of our children also performed in the Steelband. Our guests beamed with delight by all the nachos they felt.

Mensch Mitzvah Day

The spirit of Ubuntu and our obligation to Tikkun Olam were the driving forces behind this wonderful first event of Mensch Mitzvah Day month! Our organisations came together to create a morning of games and sporting fun for 60 children from Khayelitsha. The Union of Jewish Women Simcha Group arranged the day, provided transport, delicious food and coaches to run the activities. The event took place on our beautiful grounds beautiful grounds and were joined by Grass Boots Football Club coaches and kids, and The Samurai Karate Dojo Plumstead Sensei and Black Belts. Thank you all for your amazing effort and dedication to give the children from Noluntu's Food Kitchen a very special day out they won't forget!

On Thursday evening 14 November Herzlia Weizmann got together as a Weizmann Family to 'Keep it Together' with our incredible Weizmann Challah Bake in honour of the Shabbos Project. With a dynamic team of morns in charge, the venue was beautifully decorated and set up for the more than 300 attendees; children, morns, aunts, grannies and a couple of dads and grandfathers. Thank you to all those morns that assisted in putting this event together - to Sarit Werb as MC extraordinaire and our gratitude to Morah Yael Fish for her hard work in coordinating the Challah Bake. The evening was filled with excitement and ruach

as we danced, sang, celebrated, and baked as one big family. Looks like we might need to make it an annual event on our Weizmann school calendar.

Grade 6 Camp By Anton Krupenia

Situated on the outskirts of Villiersdorp, opposite the magnificent Theewaterskloof Dam, the SOS Outdoor Centre (School in the Wilds) was home to the Weizmann Grade 6s for a two night, three day stay. The SOS Camp is registered as an Environmental Education Institution with the Western Cape Education Department and the School in the Wilds programme is facilitated by highly qualified and experienced educators. Great fun was had by all and the SOS experience left the children with a renewed respect for nature and all it has to offer.

Celebrating Special Person's Dayat Weizmann Primary By Jackie Zacks

On Thursday 21 November the Weizmann Foundation Phase children paid tribute to the special people in their lives with a spectacular rendition of some favourite Disney classics. The children thanked the special people for sharing their wisdom and life lessons; promising to treasure these life lessons and pass them down to future generations. Some of these life lessons included appreciating the simple things in life (The Bare Necessities), such as the brilliance of a flower, the warmth of the sun on a chilly day, crafting and creating, reading a book on a lazy afternoon and going for a stroll. Other life lessons were: having a positive attitude (A Spoonful of Sugar); being curious about the world (A W hole New World); treasuring the time spent with loved ones (Can You Feel The Love Tonight); and the importance of passing on these pearls of wisdom (Circle of Life). Cantor Joffe and the children had the audience enraptured in their toe-tapping and hand-clapping Y iddish and Hebrew song medley. The enjoyment of the audience was evident in their enthusiastic participation in a singsong with the children. A wonderful and heart-warming morning was had by all! Thanks must go to the Weizmann PTA for the delicious tea provided.

Chess Champions Matthew Shapiro from Herzlia Highlands Primary took part in the Western Cape Kings and Queens Chess tournament - this tournament is by invitation only. He was a member of the Western Province Metro A team. Matthew's team came first, and won gold and, in his individual capacity, he won the U9 board prize with a full house score of five out five.

Ben and Adam Rabinowitz from Herzlia Constantia Primary both received their 20 I 9WP Chess Colours recently. They will be travelling to JHB in January to participate in the South African Junior Chess Championships.

Hip Hop SA Colours Aimee Hutchison and Jenna Swiel from Herzlia Constantia Primary are part of a Hip Hop crew, called REGULATE, from Diversify Dance Studio, under the direction and training of Corinne de Beer. Their team won the Provincial Hip Hop Unite competition (for the Western Cape) in May this year, held under the auspices of SASAFF (South African Sport and Fitness Federation) and went on to win the National Hip Hop Unite Competition in Cape Town in June this year. The team achieved their Protea colours and have just recently represented South Africa at the Hip Hop Unite World Championships in Leiden, Amsterdam. The team reached the semi finals and were placed 14th in the Small Cadet (age 7-13) section.

Motocross Triple Crown Ethan Williamson from Herzlia Constantia Primary became the youngest rider to achieve all three Motocross crowns in one year. The 2019 TRP South African National Motocross championship came to a dramatic and stormy head at a thunderous Terra Topia north of Johannesburg on Saturday 26 October when the 2019 champions were crowned. The year has been an excellent one, with Ethan being crowned with all three titles, including an international title. Ethan was up against 40 riders, which took place over 14 rounds around the country. These titles make him the youngest rider to get all three crowns for the year, namely his Western Province Colours, his South African Colours and The International title of African Motocross Champion, crowned in Zimbabwe.
