The world is rich with diversity. It is reflected in the observances we celebrate in various
cultures and populations. During the holiday season, and especially during the month of
December, the word “holiday” is an all-encompassing term that covers many special
days from many different cultures. Depending on where you are during this holiday
season, you may be given a different kind of greeting. It would be nice to not only know
what they mean, but also how to respond and participate in the festivities around you.
It’s a great experience and especially important to get outside of our comfort zones and
traditions to experience different holiday beliefs and celebrations around the world.
Knowing about holiday traditions can help you see new cultures in a clearer light,
connect with friends, and form new relationships with others that celebrate differently
than you. It helps us understand the world on a more beautiful multicultural and diverse
level.
Knowledge of the following holidays and celebrations can enhance our quality
experience with diversity and inclusion. Take this opportunity to learn more about
various cultures this season.
Saint Nicholas Day (Christian)
Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Latino)
St. Lucia Day (Swedish)

Christmas Day (Christian)
Three Kings Day/Epiphany (Christian)
Boxing Day (Australian, Canadian, English, Irish)
Kwanzaa (African American)
Omisoka (Japanese)

CORNER
Families all around the world have their own unique and special traditions they practice every year at Christmas-
time. In The Origins of Christmas Traditions by John Miller, he mentions some of the traditions that have been passed
down throughout the centuries. Here are a few of them:
The Christmas tree (Tannenbaum pronounced in German) is believed to have begun in Germany around the mid
700’s. They believed tree represented the life of Jesus Christ and how he lives on today. The Evergreens, which rep-
resent his life, was decorated with candles and then brought inside. The German trees are Silver Fir and Balsam
with their branches spaced far apart and grown in such a way that the candles can be placed on them without the
danger of a fire. These trees were called "Christ Tree" until the holiday was renamed Christmas, and thus the Christ-
mas tree was born.
Why do we celebrate Christmas Eve and how the colors red and green associate with Christmas? In Germany, tra-
ditions would teach the Christmas story of the Bible, by acting out what Germans called "miracle plays". These
were plays to teach children about the Garden of Eden and Adam and Eve. The tradition took place yearly on De-
cember 24. They would decorate Evergreens with red apples to represent the forbidden fruit.
The idea of gift giving goes back to the birth of Christ when the Three Wise Men entered the stable and laid gifts
before the child. Down through the ages, mankind has enjoyed giving at Christmas.
This holiday season take some time to enjoy the traditions you have made with your family throughout the years
and know that this special time of year has been enjoyed by families all around the world for centuries.

Holidays bring out the best and worst in us. Just the thought of festive
gatherings surrounded by the people you love most elicit warm feelings
inside. For others, the thought of your normal routine plus decorating the
house, attending special events, shopping for gifts, and preparing special
food for the holidays can be overwhelming. If you are like the average
caregiver, you love certain aspects of the holidays but dread others.
Many caregivers are perpetually tired from the emotional and physical
demands that result from caring for their loved ones. But what if you had
more control over the events, expectations, and relationships that often
make holiday times so stressful? This could make a huge difference in the
way you and your loved one experience the season. It might even
transform the holidays into a season of celebration instead of one to simply
endure.
Here are some suggestions to help make this holiday season joyous,
healthful, and manageable for you and your loved one.
Set realistic expectations for yourself and your loved one
How many events can you both attend or host without overdoing it? Who are the people you most want to be with?
What contributions are you capable of making to group needs such as food, drink, and gifts? Instead of making
decisions that are in their best interest, most wait for others to tell them where to go, what to bring, who's coming, and
so on. This year, give yourself permission to say ‘no’ to unwanted demands and stick with it.
Let others know when you need help
The holidays are times when there is usually an abundance of family and friends who are eager to help. If you want
help with caregiving responsibilities, such as time away for relaxation or an extra hand or two in the kitchen, don’t be
afraid to ask.
Express your emotions with family and friends
Talk with others about how you feel. Don’t expect them to intuitively know. By verbally expressing your feelings you
lighten your emotional burden and give others a chance to reach out to you for a change.
Practice rituals that you and your loved one find meaningful
This might involve a favorite holiday meal, listening to a song together, visiting a place with special memories for you
both, etc. It can also involve family and friends. And don’t be afraid to create new rituals as old ones may have painful
memories attached to them.
Celebrate what you and your loved one have right now
Celebrate what you and your loved one share right now, even though it’s not what you would ultimately prefer. Try to
let go of what was or what could be and make the most of what you still have.

CAREGIVING DURING THE HOLIDAYS

DECEMBER 2019
When I heard the theme, “Christmas Around the World”, I thought of
my uncle who spent 30 years in Germany and what he taught me about
other holiday traditions. I learned how to incorporate various aspects of
other cultures into our traditional Christmas celebrations. There are
couple of traditions I fondly reflect upon. I remember my maternal
grandmother waking up early to make homemade biscuits and fig
preserves. My paternal grandmother would wake up before the roosters
crowed to call everyone to see what Santa left and invite them to stop
by her house to pick up their gifts.
When you sit around the table or visit with your family, what traditions
will be remembered? Will Santa come down the chimney? Will you
attend a Christmas play? Will you have a snowball fight-I am not hoping for a white Christmas. Will your family
participate in a community service project? Holidays around the world have one tradition in common, reflection. As
you and your family reflect on 2019 and plan for 2020, think of how traditions from other parts of the world have
impacted your current tradition. We in Adult Day Health wish you all a Happy Holiday Season.

14 | DURHAM CENTER FOR SENIOR LIFE
SUPPORTING THE AGING COMMUNITY
Currently, the aging community is growing at twice the rate of children, and it is time for Durham to prepare for the
next phase. Durham Center for Senior Life (DCSL) is a key driver in helping to build an age-friendly community that
is inclusive, intergenerational, active, supportive, and reflective of a positive aging culture where we all want to grow
old.
Whatever seniors’ interests and schedules, with your help, we can make a place for them at DCSL!
We've set a goal to raise $15,000 between now and December 31st. This amount will enable DCSL to continue wel-
coming members, instructing classes, and helping Durham’s aging community meet their basic needs. Also DCSL
will expand outreach efforts through communication, education, and coordination with partners in and around
Durham.
Together, we can build an age-friendly community that will benefit us all!
