December 2020 We miss you all, and miss the sounds of activites and laughter within our Centers. Unfortunately at this time we are still unable to open the doors to the Senior Centers and let our Members in. I know things have been very trying over the last nine months, but know we are always thinking of you. We are also working on new activities and programs to engage you from afar. The Center Directors had an online meeting with our County funding representative in late October. This is a quarterly meeting where all Centers in the area have to collaborate and share ideas. At the time of the meeting it was highly suggested we hold off on reopening the Centers to the public. As I am sure you are seeing and hearing the positive COVID numbers have been increasing at alarming rates. Currently the county is sitting at higher numbers than we have seen in the nine months we have been battling the virus. Keeping these increasing numbers in mind, we have to do all we can to protect our staff and members of our programs. There have been calls with questions about why some of the outlying Centers are open to members. Quite a few of these Centers were open in June prior to the first increase in numbers. This increase postponed our July reopening. The outlying Centers are also blessed with funding from the City’s in which they are located. They must balance the needs of the City funders as well as the County funders. These Centers are able to provide limited programming at this time. Though we wish we could do the same, it is not in the cards at the moment. We are going to assume, due to numbers in the area, we will have to look into 2021 before we can plan a limited reopening. That seems so far away, but know we are postponing for safety. Please look through the Compass at the opportunities to take part in. There are Zoom educational meetings, phone meetings, educational readings, and puzzles to keep your minds sharp. The Center Directors are always a phone call and email away. Please keep in touch, we love to hear from you. We wish you a wonderful holiday season. As we have said, we are always thinking of you and your families. Merry Christmas! December 2020

We miss you all, and miss the sounds of activites and laughter within our Centers.

Quite a few of these Centers were open in June prior to the first increase in

numbers.

DOWNTOWN SENIOR CENTERHi guys, I hope you are hanging in there. I want to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you. I hope you are all staying warm and safe out there. This year the Holiday’s may look a little different than normal. We can’t hug those necks or give out our special candy or cookies we are famous for. I am truly saddened with all the changes we have had to adjust to over this last year. What are you famous for - do you have a secret cookie recipe that everyone is always asking for or maybe you’re the best brownie maker out there. I always looked forward to the cookie/candy exchanges and I think my husband did too. Although this year looks a little different, maybe this year is the year to write those recipes down to pass down to your kids. I bet they would love to get them even if they don’t bake. Just a thought. I know I was really excited when my grandma passed down her recipe cards in her handwriting and my other grandma passed down her handmade noodle recipe. What recipe would your kids love to get from you?

I have a surprise for you – we have a new phone line that we can all stay in touch with. I am excited to try out our new conference line with you. This is a phone line much like the Party Lines way back when. The Downtown Senior Center’s number is 316-395-2117. Below are some events listed with dates and times to call in to the phone number.

Drink Up! 5 Ways Hot Cocoa Is Good For Your Heath By Anna Norris January 12, 2016There’s nothing quite like warming up with a cup of hot cocoa on a cold winter day. It may seem like an indulgence, but the chilly day treat actually has a whole host of health benefits. Cocoa powder contains powerful antioxidants and many studies have shown its beneficial effects on heart health, insulin levels, memory and more. Best of all, it just plain makes you happy.1. Cocoa Is Nutritious: According to the USDA, cocoa powder is a good source of fiber and iron. Dark chocolate (70-85 percent cacao solids) contains calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, Vitamin A, and Vitamin K. 2. Cocoa Contains Antioxidants: Cocoa is rich in antioxidants known as flavonoids. According to Cornell University scientists, cocoa has twice the antioxidants of a glass of red wine and three times as many as found in green tea. Flavonoids have been connected with plenty of health benefits, from reducing inflammation to boosting immune systems, Live Science reports. These antioxidants have been associated with a longer life, weight management, cancer prevention and more. Dark chocolate makes a difference, the USDA says. The higher percentage of cacao the better when it comes to bars. Antioxidants are also higher in less processed cocoa powders, meaning that Dutch-processed cocoa powder, while delicious, is not the healthiest option.3. Cocoa Promotes Heart Health: According to the American Heart Association, cocoa’s effects on cardiovascular effects are wide-ranging and, overall, reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke asdf. These same antioxidants go a long way in promoting heart health. According to the European Food Information Council (EUFIC), cocoa’s flavanols have been associated with a lower risk of heart disease, combating LDL cholesterol, increasing blood flow and reducing blood clotting.4. Cocoa Aids Memory: A 2013 study

published in the journal Neurology found a correlation between drinking hot chocolate and boosted memory, suggesting that drinking two cups a day could help stave off Alzheimer’s. “As different areas of the brain need more energy to complete their tasks, they also need greater blood flow. This relationship, called neurovascular coupling, may play an important role in diseases such as Alzheimer’s,” Dr. Paul Rosenberg of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine told the Daily Mail. Cocoa’s ability to increase blood flow is thought to be at the root of its memory-enhancing abilities. In 2014, researchers provided the first direct evidence that cocoa consumption can increase cognitive function in a study published in Nature Neuroscience. Researchers narrowed down the benefits to a boost in activity in a specific region of the brain called the dentate gyrus and tracked the effects of a high-cocoa drink on this region, ultimately finding a significant difference in cognitive function. “When we imaged our research subjects’ brains, we found noticeable improvements in the function of the dentate gyrus in those who consumed the high-cocoa-flavanol drink,” the study’s lead author, Dr. Adam Brickman of the Taub Institute, said in a statement.5. Cocoa Makes You Happy: Chocolate contains many secrets to happiness. Not only does it taste delicious, but it has quite the positive effect on your brain. It releases certain neurotransmitters that make you feel comfortable and happy, and can even reduce pain and stress. Chocolate makes you feel good because it contains energy-boosting caffeine, mood-lightening serotonin, and relaxing tryptophan, the Washington Post explains. For the healthiest hot cocoa, the key is to make your own using unsweetened cocoa powder or 85 percent dark chocolate. For a lower-fat version, go with a plant-based milk. Sweeten to your taste with natural sweeteners like honey and pure maple syrup, but don’t go overboard. Last but not least, enjoy your guilt-free treat!

NORTHEAST SENIOR CENTERHello Everyone…Happy December!!!

I want to let you know that I really, really, really, really miss seeing you all. I need to ask a favor…I would like to ask that you please keep one another in prayer. I have been getting phone calls of members sick, and in and out of the hospital. We have also lost a few members too. So, please keep one another in prayer. I know these are trying times, but I read it all works out in the end. So keep the faith and hold on. We all know that tomorrow is not promised, but just getting through the day can be really hard right now. Please check on each other when you can. I try and call members when I have time. With Medicare Part D going on I have been really busy with that. As well as other certifications, like A Matter of Balance class that I teach. I have had a few members that call me and keep me in the loop of what is going on with other members. Thank you to the ones that do that. If you could help with that it would be greatly appreciated. You can also email me. My email address is at the bottom of this page. It is only me in the building. There is no one to answer phones except me. However, I am not always here. I still have meetings away from the building or on WebEx (online) depending on the day. Please leave a message and I will return your call when I can.

On another note, it is still recommended by one of our funding sources that we remain closed until the numbers go down and stay down. This means at this time we cannot give you a date on when the centers will open. With you all being the most vulnerable population, we have to keep you safe, as well as ourselves. We are still working on getting all the PPE Supplies that will be needed. So we will be ready whenever they give us the green light. Currently, I am working on plans with AARP Tax Aide for the coming tax season. I am not sure what will be decided for the coming year. If you call mid-January I should have answers to your questions, and maybe some good news for the coming tax season. We are still discussing what can be done here safely. Also, before I forget, we are planning classes like our (Grieving Support Group and Exercise Classes) that you can call in and be a part of over the phone…like a PARTY LINE. Do any of you remember the Party Line phone services? I was not born then, but it seemed to work out for that time. So be on the lookout for that. Once I get that all figured out I will send out a call with the details. Other than that, I hope you enjoy your Christmas Holiday with those you love. Remember, take no moment for granted, because the next one is not promised…Be Safe, Be Blessed! Be Encouraged!

ORCHARD PARK SENIOR CENTERHoliday Greetings Everyone!

I cannot believe Christmas is almost here. I hope this finds everyone happy and healthy. Christmas is my all-time favorite holiday as I am sure it is for many of you. For those that have lost a loved one however, it can be a very difficult time of the year. I would like to share a personal story and hopefully give some helpful information if you are struggling with a loss this holiday season.

Holidays are often difficult for people who have experienced the death of a loved one. The sounds, sights, and smells of the holiday season may trigger feelings of sadness, loss, emptiness and anxiety. Traditionally being a time of family togetherness, this season may bring feelings of loss, much different from what you experience in your daily routine. This is a common part of grieving during the holidays.

My Husband and I know these feelings all too well because we lost my Husband’s Father on Christmas Day in 2003. He was working temporarily in California and was killed in a mudslide. The shock and pain that we felt at that time was almost too much to bare. We still mourn his loss on a daily basis but it is much harder for the family on special occasions and ESPECIALLY at Christmas time. My Husband’s Father loved Christmas and he loved his family so the combination of the holiday and the loss can feel very overwhelming.

As you grieve during the holidays, well-meaning friends and family may try to tell you what they feel is in your best interest (my Mother-n-law calls this the Y’oughta’s --- “You ought to do this” or “You ought to do that”) but it is important to focus on what is best for YOU. As you become aware of your needs, share them with friends and family. Be specific with them about your preferences and desires and let them know if those needs change.

Grief can consume your available physical and emotional energy no matter what the season. The holidays place additional demands on your time and emotions. Respect what your body and mind are telling you. Be realistic in what you feel like you can and cannot do.

Memories were made in love and memories are what keep you connected to your loved ones during the holidays. Memories can bring feelings of both happiness and sadness. Allow yourself to feel your feelings. In fact, I just told my Husband the other day, I would like to watch our old home movies with our two boys who never got to meet their PaPa so they can actually see and hear him. I wasn’t able to watch them for the longest time but I feel like now, 17 years later, I can finally watch them and do so with a smile. Here are some unique ways to remember and celebrate your loved ones at Christmas:• Place a wreath on your loved one’s gravesite.• Set up a Memorial Table in your home and have friends and family bring a small

memento to place on the table that reminds them of someone special

that passed away.• I love this idea ---- Set a place for your loved one at the Christmas Dinner

table.• Dedicate some time before you and your family start eating to remember your

loved one. Take turns toasting and sharing special memories. (We do this in our family)

• Create a scholarship at a local school, technical college, or university in your loved one’s memory.

• My Aunt and Uncle had Hymnals dedicated at my Grandpa’s Church when he passed.

• One of our Director’s, Cherise, said that she writes a note to her loved ones that have passed and puts the message in a stocking that she continues to hang for them.

• Instead of the 12 days of Christmas, do Twelve Days of Random Acts of Kindness. Each day, do one random act of kindness in your loved one’s name.

Cool Facts About Snowflakes

Snowflakes and snow crystals are basically the same, a crystal is one tiny bit of ice, snowflakes are many snow crystals stuck together. Many of us love to see the first piece of snow in the winter, although we wish it would only stop at the one snowflake. Check out the facts about snowflakes below!

What exactly are snowflakes? Snowflakes are not frozen raindrops. Frozen raindrops are known as sleet. Snow crystals are formed when water vapor freezes, which all happens up in the clouds. Snowflakes are also formed in the clouds, this happens when water droplets freeze and become ice particles. Water vapor in the cloud assembles on the ice particle, causes it to stretch into a basic hexagonal prism and then to shoot branches to create a more difficult and complex shape, once this has happened snowflakes then change even more to make them unique.

Snowflakes shape and symmetry:The temperature and dampness of the cloud constantly changes, which affects the shape of each snowflake. Although snowflakes can change shape so quickly, the hexagonal symmetry is kept. Snowflakes can be categorized into six main types, plate (flat), column, stars, dendrite, lacy, needle, and capped column. When it is extremely cold the snow is very fine and powdery and snowflakes become quite simple in design, usually needle or rod-shaped. When the temperature

is near to freezing point (0 degrees Celsius), snowflakes become much larger and a lot more complex in design. There are 35 main snowflakes that you could recognize from just looking closely at.

No two are ever the same:It is indeed extremely unlikely that two complex snowflakes will look exactly alike. It’s so extremely unlikely; in fact, that even if you looked at every one ever made you would not find any exact duplicates.

The world’s biggest snowflake:According to the Guinness World Records, the largest snowflake in the world was 15 inches wide and 8 inches thick. This was recorded on 28th January 1887 by Matt Coleman at Fort Keogh, Montana. He said that the snowflake was “larger than milk pans”.

So there you have it. Snowflakes may be far more unique than you first thought. I for one will be having a closer look next time it starts snowing.
