The Christian Family The Church places the Feast of the Holy Family on the Sunday

after Christmas to help us focus in on Jesus’ early life. Mary and Joseph had the authority of parents over Him and He listened to

them, though, as today’s Gospel relates, Jesus’ true father was the Eternal Father in heaven. We are certain that this family was indeed holy, separate for the Lord.

The main vehicle for God’s Grace is the Christian family, however it is

comprised; some are large, some are small, some are alone while others are extended. One thing is sure…no family is perfect…but if we nurture the presence of the Lord in our families through prayer, if we are vigilant fighting against the attacks on the integrity of our families, and if we reach out to the Lord in others, we will be holy families, set aside for the Lord like the Holy Family of Nazareth. The Christian family has got to be different than families where the Lord is an afterthought, if any thought at all. How can families be holy? What must families do to be set aside for the Lord? First all, families need to keep the presence of the Lord alive in their homes by respecting each member in the family; allowing each member to be heard and spending quality time together in Prayer (Sunday Mass), Meals (together for dinner), Projects (home chores) and Traditions (unique for each family). Secondly, families need to keep the presence of the Lord alive in their homes by protecting their homes from anything that would lesson His presence. Obviously, abusive language or bad conversation is not good and there is plenty of sinful stuff available on TV and internet that we cannot allow into our homes and into our lives. We need to be careful about the subtle ways that evil compromises the integrity of our family. A third action a family can and must embrace to be holy, separate for the Lord, is to seek out His presence in others, particularly those who need special care. What did Jesus do, during those three years of his public ministry? He healed the sick. The family that seeks to reach out to the presence of the Lord in those who are suffering (outside of themselves) will come to a deeper appreciation of the presence of the Lord in the home. Or, to put it simply, they will be holy. May you work at making your family holy, as modeled by Jesus, Mary and Joseph. And may they be with you in this most important vocation.

A Healthy, Peaceful and Joyful New Year to everyone. God Bless us in 2016! The 1p.m. Mass on Monday afternoons will be discontinued because of low attendance. The last Monday Mass was on December 21. The Multi-Intentioned Mass, that we offered at this Monday afternoon time, will be scheduled on a regular basis throughout the coming year and mentioned in the bulletin.

LITURGICAL INSIGHTS

The Diaconate

Recently, Bishop Malooly extended an invitation to Catholic men within the Diocese of Wilmington to discern serving the Church as permanent deacons. Such service to and in the Church is known as the Diaconate, and it is the first level of Holy Orders, which changes the men at the very level of his soul. This means that men ordained as deacons receive, by the grace of the Holy Spirit and the efficaciousness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders, a permanent “mark” on their soul, such that they are forever marked for service to God and His Church. Such an indelible “mark” is also made upon the soul at Baptism and Confirmation.

Deacons have served the Church, since its very beginnings. The deacon St. Stephen, whose feast day is celebrated on December 26, is the Church’s first martyr, martyred soon after Pentecost. As well, the unofficial patron of our parish school, St. Francis of Assisi, was himself a deacon. So, men who answer God’s call to serve as a Deacon continue a long line of dedicated men with servant hearts. Theirs is a true vocation of service.

Deacons serve the Church in many ways: they can baptize, preside at marriages, and preside at graveside services. They are ordained to proclaim the Gospel and to extend that proclamation through the homily. They are an integral element to the life of a parish.

At St. John the Beloved, we are blessed in our deacons, who, in addition to fulfilling the above service to the Church, also head our RCIA program, baptismal preparation classes and adult faith formation classes, all of which are very well attended due in no small part to the loving and servant hearts of our deacons, Tom Bailey and Dennis Wuebbels, as well as to the unfailing support of their wives, for these men are blessed with a double vocation: married life and ordained service.

Any man interested in discerning the diaconate may attend an information program at the Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road, Parish Activities Center, on January 12, 2016 from 7 to 8:30PM.

During this Christmas holiday, I wish to reflect on how our students are changing and transforming their lives through their embracing of the Advent and Christmas seasons. They demonstrate love through their gentle interactions with one another. They are peaceful throughout their entrance, time in class and dismissal from the building. They evince great hope by their willingness to enter into meaningful dialogue in class. They are a joyous group and that is most evident with their participation at our communal gatherings in the Church. Our program continues to thrive because of the energy of the students and because of the respect they demonstrate to their catechists. Your families are true gifts to our program and we thank you for your dedication to bringing your child(ren) each week prepared and engaged in the learning and formation process. The gift of teaching and forming your children brings about such great faith.

For all students preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, please remember that the celebration for this sacrament is on January 16 at 10:30am. We will gather in Church for a prayer service and then students will remain in Church and parents and extended families are asked to go to the Hall for refreshments and to await for their children there. Refreshments will be available in the Hall.

There will be no bulletin items from the office until after we are back in session.

St. John the Beloved School has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools for over 28 years and has recently completed our 4th Middle States re-evaluation review. For the past year, faculty, staff, students, and parents, using our Middle States document, “Excellence By Design”, have been studying the school programs and developing goals and strategies for the next seven years. During the week of November 16, a team of visitors from the Middle States Association of Elementary Schools, spent three days talking with faculty and staff, parent groups, and students, verifying the St. John the Beloved self-study document and affirming the good work being done at St. John the Beloved School.

We are pleased to announce that the result of the team visit was very favorable and that the team was able to validate with great confidence the goals and objectives set forth for the next seven years. To quote the team chairperson “St. John the Beloved School is an exemplary school”.

Our focus will be on academic integration of technology, coordination of service requirement in our Religion curriculum and strengthening our achievement scores in Math. Over the next several years, we will closely monitor current trends in these areas, and will stay on track with our proposed action plan.

St. John the Beloved is most grateful to all those involved in making the Middle States visit a success.

For the Year of Mercy, St. John the Beloved will offer “Wisdom & Works of Mercy”, a program by Fr. Michael E. Gaitley, MIC.

The program aims to help us take our wisdom and our faith as inspiration to works of mercy in our families, parishes, and communities. This class provides insights into the relevance of the Trinity in our daily lives, and helps us to put our faith into action. Each week we intend to invite a charity from our community to explain their works and show us how we might be able to help them with our Time, Talent, and Treasure. “Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”

St. John the Beloved will offer “The Book of Isaiah”, a program by Fr. Mitch Pacwa, a popular host on EWTN. This book has been called “The Fifth Gospel” and “The Gospel of

the Old Testament”. It includes the following quotes: “Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and call His name Immanuel” and “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities, for He Himself is the Prince of Peace”. However, unlike the four Gospels, it was written more than 700 years before the birth of Christ. Beginning January 5 we will meet Tuesday evenings from 6:30 until 8:00 for 26 sessions. Meet the RCIA Candidate Mearyn Julianna Roscoe

I am Mearyn Julianna Roscoe, I am 15. My siblings are Grace age 13, Joshua age 6 and Daniel age 3. We like to sing and chase each other around the house. We are a home-schooling family. Even though I am busy in the tenth grade, I enjoy drawing and playing guitar and piano. I also love to write.

At first, just my Mom was going to join RCIA, and she suggested it for my sister, Grace and I as well. I admit I was nervous, and didn't really want to go. As I began to learn things, I grew to feel excited about going, and felt welcomed by all who attended.

RCIA has really changed my view on Catholicism and even Christianity. RCIA classes have made it exciting and interesting as well as educational. This has made me aware of God's presence in the hardships I see others facing and the way He provides for others and myself. The discussion we had on prayer really stuck in my mind and gave me a better understanding of God's timing and plan for my life.

Before our family came to St. John the Beloved, we were non-denominational Christians. I never felt like I could hear what they said in the service and apply it to my life. St. John the Beloved felt more accepting, more welcoming, and as I began to listen to the teachings, I felt like I could understand them and use them during the week, in everyday life.

RCIA has helped me to identify specific objects, prayers, or phrases and their significance in the Mass that I had not understood before. Now I am able to follow Mass more easily. I am excited to continue to learn, and I feel a great sense of peace when I’m there.

Ministry of Caring Sandwich Schedule Sodality Blue Army Christmas Holiday

Donations of sandwiches are welcome from all parishioners. Delivery can be made to the hall kitchen door on Thursday evenings 6:30pm to 7:00pm and Friday morning before 9:30am. These sandwiches are taken to the Emmanuel Dining Room to help feed those in need. We are especially in need of sandwiches on the 1st and 4th Fridays of the month.

OUTREACH THANK YOU TO ST. JOHN THE BELOVED PARISHIONERS!

Once again the extraordinary generosity of the St. John the Beloved parish has provided abundant help to needy families. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, through your generous contributions, your Outreach Program provided a chicken, turkey, or ham, and groceries to more than 180 families, including 17 large cooked dinners donated by our Pike Creek Acme.

Many individuals and groups deserve special thanks for their contributions, food drives, and other help, including St. John the Beloved School, SJB Religious Education Program, Parish Life, Knights of Columbus, Prayer Group, Linden Hill Elementary School, Sodality, St. Vincent de Paul Society, SJB athletic programs, area high school students, St. Mark’s cheerleaders, and SJB scout troops and Brownies. We also thank our pastor and priests and the parish staff for their continuing support.

The Giving Tree Program distributed a total of about 1,500 gifts to about 1,000 individuals, including twenty-three families who were adopted. Children in all of the families received at least two gifts, and the head of the household received a gift certificate. The Giving Tree Program, launched in October, is a very challenging and very successful undertaking, and we extend special thanks to all of our contributors.

And last, but never least, a sincere thank you to all of our Outreach volunteers, who faithfully dedicate hundreds of hours during the Christmas season—and all year long—to helping feed and clothe our families. May God bless all of you, and may 2016 be a healthy, happy, and productive year for you and your families.

Relish the glee of giving and receiving a gift. After the hubbub dies down, pause as a family not only to thank each other, but to be thankful that you have the resources to give gifts and that you have a family to share this time with. Don't let the day slip slide away without this pause.
