THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Advent ushers in a new liturgical year of a three-year cycle. We are now in Year B in the Catholic Church’s lectionary of
scripture readings for Mass; the Gospel of St. Mark is featured prominently.
Mark's Gospel is now generally regarded as the earliest Gospel. It presents a stark and challenging portrait of Jesus' public ministry, which leads into a dramatic account of his passion
and death. It has often been described as a passion narrative with a long introduction. Mark presents Jesus as a wise teacher and a powerful and compassionate healer. But he also insists
that this Jesus can be properly understood only when we con-front the mystery of the cross and Jesus' identity as a suffering Messiah. For this reason Mark's work is sometimes called the
Gospel of the Suffering Servant. As we read and hear the scriptures, we will have to face the suffering of Jesus the Son of God and the suffering that is part of our lives as individuals
and as citizens of the world. (Continued on page 4)
LA LITURGIA DE LA PALABRA Adviento marca el comienzo de un nuevo año litúrgico de un
ciclo de tres años. Ahora estamos en el Año B en leccionario de lecturas bíblicas de la Misa de la Iglesia Católica; el Evangelio de San Marcos es el Evangelio predominante.
El Evangelio de Marcos es ahora considerado generalmente

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD (Continued from page 1)
Each year the Secretariat of Divine Worship of the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) publishes
the Liturgical Calendar for the Dioceses of the United States
of America. This calendar is used to foster the celebration of
the liturgy in our country. The calendar is based upon the
General Roman Calendar, promulgated by Pope Paul VI on
February 14, 1969, subsequently amended by Pope John Paul
II, and the Proper Calendar for the Dioceses of the United
States of America.
The Liturgy of the Word on Sundays and Holy Days consists
of: a reading from the Old Testament, a Responsorial Psalm,
a reading from the New Testament, the Gospel, the priest or
deacon’s homily, our Profession of Faith and closed by the
Prayer of the Faithful.
The First Reading - usually is taken from the Old Testa-
ment. It can reflect on Jewish laws, traditions and historical
references.
The Responsorial Psalm - is a faithful expression of one of
the psalms, linked to either the readings or the gospel.
The Second Reading - can encourage us to connect with the
early Christian church. A text from the New Testament is
used on Sundays and Solemnities.
We will focus on the Gospel and Homily next time.

Cada año, la Secretaría de Culto Divino de la Conferencia
Estadounidense de Obispos Católicos (USCCB) publica el
Calendario Litúrgico para las diócesis de los Estados Unidos
de América. Este calendario se utiliza para fomentar la
celebración de la liturgia en nuestro país. El calendario se
basa en el calendario romano general, promulgado por el
Papa Pablo VI el 14 de febrero de 1969, posteriormente
modificado por el Papa Juan Pablo II y el calendario
Correcto para las Diócesis de los Estados Unidos de
América.
La Liturgia de la Palabra los Domingos y días de precepto
consiste en: una lectura del Antiguo Testamento, un salmo
responsorial, una lectura del Nuevo Testamento, el
Evangelio, la homilía del sacerdote o del diácono, nuestra
profesión de fe y cerrado por la Oración de los Fieles.
La Primera Lectura - por lo general es tomada del Antiguo
Testamento. Esta se puede referir sobre leyes judías,
tradiciones y referencias históricas.
El Salmo responsorial - es una fiel expresión de uno de los
salmos, vinculado a cualquiera de las lecturas o el evangelio.
La Segunda lectura - puede animarnos a conectar con la
Iglesia cristiana primitiva. Un texto del Nuevo Testamento
se usa los Domingos y solemnidades.

SECOND COLLECTION To Support The Catholic Communications
Campaign And The Catholic University of America Next Weekend, January 3 – 4, 2015
Next week our parish will take up the Collec-tion for the Catholic Communication Cam-paign (CCC) and the Catholic University of America. The Catholic Communication Cam-paign supports the essential work that keeps the gospel message in the world, through Catholic social media by radio, the Internet, television, and print publications. Half of all proceeds remain in our archdiocese, so please be generous! The CCC is how the Good News gets around to you.
The Catholic University of America is the
national university of the Catholic Church in the United States, located in Washington, DC. It provides an aca-demically rigorous education guided by Catholic intel-lectual tradition to nearly 7,000 students every year. More than 4,000 students directly receive scholarship aid from this collection, including many from our dio-cese. Please be generous in this important collection.
The FDNY Solidarity Crèche at
“Casa Belvedere” In 2001, the City of Naples, Italy donated a magnificent Nea-politan Proesepio to honor the Firefighters and others who died on 9/11. Modeled after an 18th century, highly artistic style, the one hundred people are placed in an elaborate setting. Creatively unique are the Three Kings, riding horses; but instead of bearing their traditional gifts, they reverently carry 3 fireman’s Helmets with the numbers 9-11-01. This very special Christmas experience is on display outside of Casa Belvedere at 77 Howard Avenue on Grymes Hill, Staten Island. It will be lit until midnight each evening through mid-January 2015.

Y La Universidad Católica de América Próximo Fin de Semana, 3 – 4 de Enero del 2015
La próxima semana nuestra parroquia realizará la Colecta para la Cam-paña Católica de la Comunicación (CCC) y para la Universi-dad Católica de América. La Campaña Católica de la Comunica-ción financia la importante labor que mantiene el mensaje del Evangelio en el mundo ofreciendo un contenido católico por medio de la radio, el Internet, la televisión y los materiales impresos. La mitad de lo recaudado permanece en nuestra arquidiócesis, así que, por favor contribuyan generosamente! Mediante la CCC es como compartimos la Buena Nueva con ustedes.
La Universidad Católica de América, ubicada en Washington, D.C., es la universidad nacional de la Iglesia Católica de los EE. UU. Brinda un educación académica rigurosa, guiada por la tradición intelectual católica, a casi 7,000 estudiantes cada año. Más de 4,000 estudiantes reciben ayuda financiera gracias a esta colecta, entre los que se encuentran mu-chos feligreses de nuestra diócesis.
