O ne of the all-time great Christmas movies is It’s a Wonderful Life! The classic scene is the final one. The

townspeople are gathering in George Bailey’s living room. They’re pouring money onto a table, all with the intention of rescuing George from financial ruin. It’s not long before George’s brother enters the picture. Having heard of the hard times George had been going through, he secured a leave from the military, hopped a plane, and flew all day and night to make it to Bedford Falls. He wanted to be of help. Seeing the people and the mountain of money, he raises his glass and toasts his brother, “the richest man in the world!” George Bailey was rich, all right, but not because he was suddenly inundated with money. December 30, 2012 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph 3

From our Pastor, Fr. Michael P. Hanifin

D ear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Fatima, Christmas is now behind us and we are only a couple of days away from New Year’s Day. This Sunday we focus on the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph and family life from a Christian perspective. Psychologists have isolated about a dozen or so characteris-tics that happy and successful families share, while most

unhappy families are unhappy and dysfunctional in their own unique and individu-alistic way. This Sunday reminds me of a quality that happy marriages and fami-lies share and that is holiness. We are tempted to think that holy families are from out this world and beyond the realm of human experience. Somehow God touched them and they were set free from the everyday anxieties, challenges and burdens that many ordinary families endure. Holy people experience the burden of life that every person who has lived on this earth has experienced. For holy people ordinary daily problems are no strangers. I guess what makes them different than the ordinary run of the mill person is that they have a good support system. They look to God for guidance, assurances, con-solation, and direction when it comes to dealing with human difficulties. When we read the early chapters of the gospels of Matthew and Luke we see that the Holy Family had many problems and challenges. Today’s gospel (Luke 2:41-52) tells of the panicking holy parents who lost their child in the temple precincts. They franticly looked for Jesus among their relatives and traveling companions. Finally after three days of searching everywhere Jesus was found. Every family has good times and bad ones as well. The Holy Family reached their level of sanctity because of their readiness to coop-erate with God’s divine will. Luke knew this and wanted us to know it as well. He pointed out many instances where Mary and Joseph always did what God wanted of them, whether by a message from an angel of the Lord or by their fidelity to the prescripts of the Mosaic law. The willingness to do what God wants of us brings with it the development of many godly values such as honesty, fidelity, responsibility, and virtues as are men-tioned in today’s second reading from Saint Paul’s letter to the Colossians: heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and forgiveness of another. These values help people to have good and holy relationships. Good and holy rela-tionships help us to become the holy people and families that God has intended us to be. Gratefully yours in Christ the Good Steward, Father Michael P. Hanifin Harmony* Empathy* Developer* Connectedness* Input*

Year End Giving 2012 Changes in the tax laws are cer-tain to happen in 2013. This means there is a greater incentive for our OLF parishioners to make charitable gifts before the year's end. Please contact Ron Runolf-son or Fr. Mike at the parish of-fice (949-492-4101) for more in-formation or to facilitate a year end gift of securities. Remember – gifts must be postmarked on or before December 31, 2012 to count as a 2012 tax deduction. Mass Intentions Beginning in the New Year, we will be offering intentions for Sunday Masses to our commu-nity. There is a very long tradition of uniting a particular intention, along with the many intentions of the community, to the sacrifice of Jesus we celebrate in every Mass. These intentions are mentioned during the Universal Prayer at Mass. It is also customary that a donation is offered to attach one’s own small sacrifice to the saving sacrifice of Christ. We suggest a donation of $20 per intention. This money is used as ordinary income for the church. Stop by the office to include your inten-tions.

FFC Classes will resume Wednesday, January 9th

Welcome to Our Lady of Fatima Parish 4

Parish Office schedule The following is the Parish office schedule during the holidays:

Catholic Mens Fellowship Meetings Thursday, January 10, 7 – 8:30pm AND Saturday, January 12, 6:30 – 7:55am Catholic Mens Fellowship is a group of men who discuss topics about faith, fatherhood, and fraternity through Catholic eyes. We meet in McGowan Hall the 2nd and 4th Saturday mornings of each month and now Thursday evenings, too. Our casual setting allows us to share mod-ern issues that are up-close and personal. Come hang with the guys, get more from your Church, and make genuine friends with people like yourself. Contact Gil Manalo at [email protected] or Jim Ryder at [email protected]. Liturgy of the Word for Children Will not take place on December 30th. It will resume on January 6th. This program takes place during the 9am Mass. Children 4 years (pre-k) through grade 4 are sent from the main assembly to a nearby space where they celebrate the Lit-urgy of the Word in a simplified, yet equivalent format. Children in grades 1-4 return at the offertory. Pre-k and kindergarteners remain with their leaders until the end of Mass when they are picked up in the school kindergarten classroom by a parent. Pre-registration is NOT required to attend. This ministry currently has openings for leaders and teen assistants. Leaders must have a love of both the Liturgy and an understanding of effective communication with children and be willing to serve on a rotating basis every 4-6 weeks. Training is provided. Please contact Liz Pederson at 492-8631 or Rosa Rama at 492-4101 or [email protected]

Men’s Retreat 2013 All parish men and friends are invited to our annual 3-day retreat on Friday, January 25 through Sunday, January 27, 2013. This year’s theme is “Remember and experience the life-giving embrace of the compassion of Christ.” The retreat is being held at the Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center in Sierra Madre. It is a spectacular location offering a prayerful and thoughtful environment along with excellent food and accommodations. The suggested donation of $195 covers your accommodations for two nights and five meals. A deposit of $50 will reserve your space. Please contact Doyle Manning at 949-369-9612 or Edu-ardo Jimenez at 949-584-9680 for information. This is a wonderful opportunity to join with fellow parish-ioners and men from other Catholic parishes to express and rekindle your faith! Bible Study Update The Thursday evening Bible Study class is on holiday break. The class resumes on Thursday, January 10. Hurricane Sandy Recovery – The Church of the Northeast A second collection to benefit those impacted by Hurri-cane Sandy will take place on the weekend of January 13. These funds will be used for both the humanitarian and institutional needs of the Catholic dioceses that were af-fected. Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, VP of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, writes, “As we know, the Church is a primary source of healing and peace when tragedies like this happen. Many of the church structures have been damaged and their resources depleted. This makes ministry to the people affected more difficult to provide aid, comfort and most importantly the sacraments to those in need.” Our financial support will help the church of the northeast region of the United States con-tinue its mission. Please be generous.

Wonderful Life!
