CATHOLICS COME HOME Love in Action Most Catholics have heard of the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, but could not name them if they were asked. They are: 1. feed the hungry, 2. give drink to the thirsty, 3. shelter the homeless, 4. clothe the naked, 5. visit the sick, 6. visit the prisoners, 7. bury the dead, 8. give alms to the poor. The reason for mentioning these on the Feast of the Holy Family is to remind us that faith not put into action is meaningless. It is not enough to be holy. Even the holy family dealt with everyday issues of house chores, caring for each other and practicing their Jewish faith. It is easy to dismiss the idealistic actions of the holy family as unattainable. It is easy to give up. The grace of God is a call to action. We are invited by God each day to mirror his love. Rain falls on good soil as well as rocky ground and desert lands. He allows the sun to shine on the good and the not so good. “The favors of the Lord are not exhausted, his mercies are not spent. They are renewed each morning, so great is his faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23) We have heard the expression, “Charity begins at home.” This is where love is learned; where patterns of behavior are set in young minds and hearts. As parents, what are your actions teaching your children? In the Baptismal blessing we hear, “You are the first teachers of your child in the ways of faith. May you be the best of teachers.” Once we have learned charity at home we are secure enough to reach out to others without fear that there will not be any love left for oneself. This is where our journey of faith unites us with the will of the Father. Jesus understood this. He learned his lessons of faith in the home and in the Temple at Sabbath services. He spent time with people of all sorts. He used his skills and talents to help those around him. He sought no earthly riches; yet, he enriched all who knew and followed him. Spend time with your family. Make a commitment to grow in the love of God, first at home then extending it to others in works of charity. In the New Year you will be hearing about new programs to help us grow in our faith and in relationship to God through our sharing stories of faith in a program called “Alpha”. Alpha brings family and friends together to view a reflection video and share personal reflections. In June, 7-8, 2019, we will also have the opportunity to participate with our new parish grouping to build a house. You will hear more about this in January. I hope you will put your faith in action and find a new joy of life here at St. George. You will be blessed throughout the New Year! Fr. Ken Fleck

CATHOLICS COME HOME

Love in Action Most Catholics have heard of the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, but could not name them if they were asked. Join us for our spring semester beginning

Saturday, January 19! During the fall semester of TMIY, more than forty men accepted our invitation to breakfast and discovered a great way to nourish both their spiritual and physical hunger on Saturday mornings. Won’t you please consider making the New Year’s resolution to join us this winter and early spring as we begin our Lenten journey towards Easter? We will be meeting for 13 consecutive Saturdays from January 19 until April 13, the day before Palm Sunday. Each week, our presentations and discussions will focus on how we, as Christian men, can improve our relationships and have a more positive impact within our families and community. If you were not able to attend our earlier sessions, please don’t let that discourage you from getting involved. All men, 18 and over, are invited to join us whenever their schedules permit. Invite a friend and discover a great way to start your weekend! That Man Is You! meets on Saturday mornings for breakfast in O’Connell Hall at St. George School. To learn more about TMIY, please contact Gary at (708) 614-1734; [email protected] .

….. McCall Smith’s generous writing and dry humor, his gentleness and humanity and his ability to evoke a place and a set of characters without caricature or condescension have endeared his books to readers,” —The New York Times

PERSONAL BENEFIT, COMMON GOOD In its first year the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship Program, "Invest in Kids", awarded scholarships to more than 3,000 students from low-income families to attend a Catholic school of their choice in Cook and Lake Counties. This was made possible through the generosity of thousands of donors who took advantage of the seventy-five percent state income tax credit on their donation. To help their donations have even more impact in 2019, several donors have agreed to pool their resources and offer a 2-for-1 matching gift program to the more than 160 schools run by the Archdiocese of Chicago, up to $5 million total. HOW IT WORKS • Donors who would like to receive the tax credit for their 2018 taxes should begin the process prior to December 14, 2018 to ensure that they have enough time to make their gift by December 31, 2018. • For every dollar designated to a qualifying school through Empower Illinois between December 1, 2018 and February 28, 2019, the school will receive two dollars in matching funds. The donations are capped at $100,000 per school. • The program will end when all matching funds have been depleted or on February 28, 2019, whichever comes first. • After April 1, 2019, any matching gift program funds that are not awarded at a designated school will be reallocated to low-income students at schools with unmet demand. EXAMPLE A donor with about $75,000 in income could make a donation of $5,000 to Empower Illinois, in cash or stock, that would... • Eliminate their Illinois state income tax liability (approximately $3,750); and

• Provide $15,000 in scholarship support (after the $10,000 match) For a total cost of $1,250, this donor has now provided three students with $5,000 in scholarships to use to attend a Catholic school of their choice (donation of $5,000 minus the $3,750 in state credit). Archdiocese of Chicago Immigration Ministry

Film Festival

The Archdiocese of Chicago presents the 2019 Immigration Film Festival.

In the dry, rugged, and sun-scorched terrain where many immigrants lose their lives, bishops, priests and lay people come together each year to celebrate the Eucharist. Like other liturgies, they pray and worship together. Unlike other liturgies, a sixteen-foot iron fence divides this community in half, with one side in Mexico and the other in the United States. One Border, One Body tells the story of a ritual that unites people beyond political constructions which divide them. Amidst a desert of death and a culture of fear, it testifies to God’s universal, undivided and unrestricted love for all people. It speaks of the gift and challenge of Christian faith and the call to feed the world’s hunger for peace, justice and reconciliation. More than just another documentary on immigration, this film is a meditation of the Kingdom of God, a globalization of solidarity and a journey of hope.

St. Julie Billiart, 7399 159th St., Tinley Park, will host One Border, One Body on January 7 at 7:00 pm in the Devine Center. Please join us for an inspiring film and discussion. All are welcome! For information, contact [email protected].

Tony & Janina’s American Wedding is a feature-length documentary that gets to the heart of the broken, red-tape-ridden U.S. immigration system.

After 18 years in America, Tony and Janina Wasilewski’s family is torn apart when Janina is deported back to Poland, taking their six year old son Brian with her.

Bringing a fresh perspective to the immigration conversation, this film tells the untold human rights story that every undocumented immigrant in Post-9/11 America faces today – with the power to open the conversation for change.

***The Archdiocese of Chicago Office of Immigration Ministry is offering the Immigration Film Festival during National Migration Week, January 6 through January 12. Watch your bulletin for the complete schedule of films being shown throughout the archdiocese.***

Year End Contributions Due to IRS Regulations, all contributions received through Monday, December 31 are recorded as a 2018 contribution. Contributions made at Masses on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 are required by law to be recorded as a 2019 contribution regardless of the type of envelope used or the date written on the check. If a contribution dated in December is mailed to the parish office and postmarked on or before December 31, it is recorded as a 2018 contribution. However, all contributions delivered to the parish office in person or postmarked on or after January 1 must be recorded as a 2019 contribution. Therefore, even if a check is dated in December, 2018, but is mailed or delivered to the parish office in January, that contribution must be recorded as a 2019 contribution. We are grateful for all your donations and want to thank you for your generosity.

Changes to the federal tax code have generous individuals looking for ways to continue supporting the work of the Church while maximizing their tax benefits for the 2018 tax year. The standard deduction may have been increased, making it less likely that charitable gifts will be itemized, but there are still many ways to make a tax-advantaged gift to St. George. Making a gift directly from an IRA account is a perfect way to do so. Donors aged 70 ½ or older can transfer up to $100,000 from their IRAs directly to qualified charities, without having to pay income taxes on the money. This donation can satisfy all or part of the Required Minimum Distribution. Things to remember: • Gifts must be made directly from your IRA account to the

qualified charity (in this case, to St. George). • Gifts do not generate taxable income or tax deductions. • Making a gift directly from an IRA can lower your overall

income, which may result in lower Medicare premiums. • The transfer may be made in addition to any other

charitable giving you have planned. • The transfer from your IRA account must be received by

December 31, 2018. Please allow one week for mailing or a wire transfer.

A gift from your IRA account is an impactful way to honor your faith and help St. George. Please feel free to contact Darlene Georges if you are interested in this opportunity, or if you have any questions. I can be reached at [email protected] or (708) 532-2243, ext. 507.

A Gift

A young lad was opening his Christmas presents when he came upon an envelope from his favorite uncle. When he opened the envelope there was a sum of money in it along with a note from his uncle that read: “I know you wanted a baseball glove real bad, but I wasn’t sure what kind, so I enclosed the money you need to buy the glove you want. Merry Christmas.” The next day the young lad set out to the sporting goods store thinking, “I can get that $30 dollar glove they have, and I might even have enough to get a baseball, too.” Along the way he ran into a mother and her two children looking longingly into the deli window. They looked so hungry, he gave them some of his funds thinking he still had enough to get the glove. He then ran into a homeless man shivering in the cold. He gave the man some of his money to buy a coat. The owner of the sporting goods store stood watching the boy from his store window. The lad finally went into store and looked at the money he had left. “Is there a glove I can buy for $15?” he asked. The store owner feeling compassion for him, grabbed a 63 dollar mitt and told him, “You’re in luck! This one’s on sale for fifteen dollars. And it comes with a baseball.” The boy paid the man and left the store happily tossing the ball into his new mitt.

God’s love is like that. When we give it away, it comes back to us double, sometimes even 100 fold. That’s why it’s good for us to go to Holy Family Chapel and visit with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. We can open up our hearts and ask Our Lord to fill them up with His Love. Then we can go out and pass it along to those in need of a little love. We end up feeling more loved than before. Better yet, why not call Bill Beckman at (708) 429-2762 and arrange to spend an hour every week with The Blessed Sacrament. This way you will keep your heart overflowing with His Love and always have some to give away to everyone. Who knows, some day we may find ourselves tossing a ball into a mitt as we head into eternity, where there’s a ballgame where every hit is a home run, but base stealing in not allowed.
