The New Year is here, and for many it is a time to reflect on how the past year went and what can be improved on in the upcoming year. The completion of a lot of big projects around town were completed in 2010. Mayor Steve Grajczyk said he thinks the town can look forward to an even big-ger and brighter year in 2011.

“The economy is turning around, there seems to be some action in the housing industry,” said Grajczyk.

“We now have some industrial land that people can purchase in various sizes.”

Grajczyk mentioned there is industrial land for sale, and that there is already interest in it.

“We’re working on the north-west quarter ,where the old wa-ter reservoir is, and looking to probably keep the reservoir and sell the land around it to a de-veloper. We have a lot of interest there.”

Town officials are looking at the possibility of turning the reservoir into a storm water pond reservoir, if town residents agree. Grajczyk said maybe they would work with W.I.D at some point in the future and sell the reservoir.

“Water is going to be golden, and we have to watch what we do with the water and conserve it as much as possible.”

Grajczyk said he and coun-cil have worked hard to keep taxes down as much as possi-ble. School taxes have gone up considerably and he would like residents to know there is a big difference between the town’s taxes and school taxes. It was the provincial government that raised the school taxes.

Did You KnowDid you know the song “Auld Lang Syne” is sung at the

stroke of midnight in almost every English speaking country in the world to ring in the New Year?

Scottish poet Robert Burns wrote the song in the 1700’s, and it was first published in 1796 after his death.

This old Scottish tune literally means “old long ago” or simply “the good old days”

“I want that clearly understood, that it’s not ours that went up, it’s the school taxes that went up a lot,” said Grajczyk.

2011 marks the centennial year for Strathmore and there is approximate-ly $60,000 in the budget to help make it a year to remember.

“It’s going to be a three-day celebra-tion and we’re going to do it up right,” said Grajczyk.

Already there are plans brewing within the centennial committee, and rumours of events being held every long weekend to commemorate the

year. New Year’s brings with it resolu-tions, with many people saying they will quit smoking or exercise more.

Grajczyk has a different kind of resolution. “My New Year’s resolution is to work with everybody from the County to Siksika Nation to W.I.D and work together as a unit.”

The New Year will be something to pay attention to, according to Grajc-zyk, with a lot of exciting new things coming. What new things? We’ll just have to wait and see.

“I’m not at liberty to say yet but there is some things in the wind that’ll make everybody happy,” said Grajc-zyk.

Donation boxes for the Canadian Li-ons Eyeglass Recycling Centre, CLERC, are set up in various locations around town and across the country. Bernie Gribben, from Calgary, runs CLERC. They provide eyeglasses to those in need in all over the world.

“We have Lions in Strathmore who collect glasses for us, and the Strath-more Lions Club has always been very supportive,” said Gribben.

Art Eeles is one of those Strathmore Lions who brings the glasses into Cal-gary, and to Gribben, whenever he

makes a trip to Calgary. The program collects glasses from

coast to coast in Canada, which are then shipped to Calgary. The CLERC program gathers as many as 30,000 pair of glasses per month. Upon ar-rival of the glasses in Calgary, Gribben takes them to the Calgary Correctional Centre in Spy Hill. The offenders there sort, sanitize, hand dry, inspect, repair where possible and then read for pre-scription on one of four lensometers. Once the prescription has been estab-lished, the prescription is attached to a Ziploc bag and the individual glasses go inside. The glasses are then pack-aged into boxes of 350, according to type. Since 1996, inmates have been volunteering their time to sanitize, in-spect and repair them.

Recently Gribben had the opportu-nity to go to Mexico to distribute the eyeglasses first hand.

``I think it was an opportunity to be able to see what happens at the other end and making sure that the glasses are being distributed correctly,” said Gribben.

“The main reason for that is because this may be the only pair of glasses these people will ever receive.”

He left on Nov. 19 and returned to Calgary on Dec. 2. There were 10 peo-ple from Quebec and two from Mani-

toba. Rick Forti was the only other Calgary area resident to go on the trip. There were six doctors to make sure everyone was fitted correctly, plus 26 fourth year students from two differ-ent schools of optometry. 16 of those students were from Chicago and the other 10 came from Brisbane, Austra-lia.

“We had to make 82 pair of glasses because we didn’t have suitable pre-scriptions for individuals,” said Grib-ben.

The glasses were made and shipped off to Mexico, and they should be in the hands of the recipients this week, said Gribben.

He said they distributed 3,600 pair of glasses while they were in Mexico, including the three millionth pair, which went to an 84-year-old man.

``I think we learned quite a bit and we brought back some ideas to im-prove distribution of the eyeglasses,” said Gribben.

He said they probably should have gone years ago, but never had the op-portunity. Now that they have been there, they look forward to going again in the future.

“All of us had a good time. It was a good experience and the three mil-lionth is away and we’re working on the next million.”

Spreading the gift of vision in Mexico

Bernie Gribben went to mexico to help distribute eyeglasses that have been collected for those who may not be able to afford them. People from all over the world spent close to two weeks in mexico giving eye exams and distributing glasses. Rick Forti (l), Juan Navarro Castellanos of Ja-may, mexico, and Bernie Gribben. Navarro Castella-nos was the recipient of the three millionth pair of eye-glasses the Lions have col-lected and distributed.

Mayor Steve Grajczyk isn’t the only one who is looking forward to 2011 and the rejuvenation of our economy. Arno Doerkson, MLA for the Strath-more/Brooks constituency, said 2010 has been a year of improvement and there is a lot of renewed optimism in Alberta residents.

“Certainly there’s uncertainty be-cause of the impact that the American market has on our markets but I think in Canada, and particularly in Alber-ta, there’s renewed optimism,” said Doerkson.

“We’ve seen the economy improve. It’s been a tough year, year and a half, for a lot of small businesses. The fact that there’s drilling going on in terms of the oil and gas industry is positive for many of the smaller companies that also service those drilling companies.”

Doerkson said he thinks the drilling will continue. Natural gas prices have

stayed relatively low and Doerkson said that can be a challenge for certain segments of the industry.

“The fact that oil prices are high and there’s significant activity going on in the province, more in the north than in the south, but that’s still good for service companies and that sort of thing.”

From an agricultural perspective he said weather has been a challenge for a number of years. Depending on where one resides, hail was a factor this year, and there was, of course, the delayed harvest. Doerkson said the markets have been fairly good and farmers were able to harvest the crops successfully.

This past spring and summer saw many residents and businesses con-cerned about Highway 1 and a poten-tial Strathmore bypass in the future. Doerkson feels there has been good progress made on it.

“Earlier in the year we had the Trans-portation Minister in Strathmore and

discussed with both the county and the town their concerns,” said Doerk-son.

“We’ve heard from a lot of landown-ers and businesses and I know that both the county and the town have in the last month or so met with trans-portation department officials. They are optimistic about that fact that we’ll make progress on that in the New Year.”

There is a lot of anticipation in the community regarding the opening of Sagewood Seniors Community, which should happen later in 2011.

“We know there’s a need for in-creased capacity so we’re seeing prog-ress on that. That’s important,” said Doerkson.

Sagewood is a new seniors care fa-cility opening up kitty corner from the Hospital. It will provide much needed space for seniors housing in the com-munity, both for assisted living and for affordable independent living for se-niors.

Winter can be long and dreary, with kids hav-ing to spend more time in the house due to the chilly weather and a lack of outdoor activities. One Hillview couple have gone out of their way to provide entertainment for the kids in their com-munity. Mike and Tamara Stevenson have cleared off a section of the lake behind their house for a skating rink and made a type of luge for tobog-ganing.

“The biggest reason I would say that I clean it is, I just like seeing ev-erybody out there having fun. I throw the skates on too and go out there,” said Mike.

Last year he and his wife had tried to clear the pond a bit to make a skating area. He said they went out with their shovels to clear an area

but it was too late in the year. The luge is some-thing the Stevensons have made for a few years to help give their two children something to do.

“This year I have a snow blower so I thought I would give them a hand and try it out,” said Mike.

The first time they cleared and flooded the ice, it was after the big snow fall in late Novem-ber. It took 12 hours, with two hours of that needed just to clear the ice for hockey.

“We always make something back there for them to go sliding. It just got carried away this year and just got bigger and bigger.”

He made a device, us-ing 225 feet of hose, to flood the lake and spread the water evenly using their own house water. During the weekends kids and adults alike can be seen filling the

ice and waiting in line to take their toboggan down the hill. Mike said there is a natural divide between the skating area and the sledding side be-cause of the snow bank they made. Mike and Tamara can be seen out on the lake clearing the snow after every snow fall. The Stevensons also have a variety of tobog-gans that they leave out for the community kids to use.

“I hope it inspires peo-ple around the pond to get out and do stuff and have fun. It’s right there in our backyard, so why not?” said Mike.

Mike said in Janu-ary he will be back to work, so it will be hard for him to keep it up all winter. As long as they are able to keep clearing the snow and flooding the rink, the Stevensons plan to keep the luge and skating area main-tained.

The Strathmore Fire Department is looking to light up Kinsmen Park in time for Family Day. Originally Chief Muir Furzer had intended to have the park lit up in time for Christmas but it didn’t quite work out due to a lack of dona-tions.

“We’re looking at get-ting as many LED lights so we can start lighting up Kinsmen Park,” said Furzer.

Approximately a month ago Furzer went to the Chamber of Com-merce and asked them to speak to the busi-ness in the Chamber to see if they would donate lights. A lot of the busi-nesses are being relied upon for donations right now and Furzer said he thought he would try something different and

keep the cost low. He was requesting no more than three sets of white LED lights be donated from each business.

“The businesses have been really slow and I haven’t got any corpo-rate ones at all, and now I’m looking at going into public,” said Furzer.

NAPA Auto Supplies asked about sponsoring a tree, at the time Furzer said they wanted to stick with the white lights be-cause they didn’t want to be in competition with the Ag. Society. Furzer said they have since de-cided they will take what they can get since dona-tions have been so low.

“Anybody that wants to donate lights, bring them down,” said Furzer.

“Our next goal is to try to have it lit up for Feb. 21, which is Family Day here for the Centen-nial Day celebrations... the first level of centen-

nial celebrations.” He said how long the

lights stay lit is depen-dant on what the com-munity wants and also on how much power Fortis Alberta will allow them to have. Furzer said there was a point in time when the lake was lit up, but due to vandal-ism the project eventu-ally ended.

“I think that may be one of the reasons why we’re getting a slow re-sponse.”

Both the rural and the town fire departments will be stringing up the lights. Furzer said they don’t quite have the 200 sets he was hoping for, but thanks to a recent donation from Canadi-an Tire, they are a little closer.

Donations can be dropped off at the Fire Hall during the business days (721 Lakeside Bou-levard in Strathmore.)

With the New Year just around the corner, I would like to let you know about a change to the property damage collision reporting threshold. On Jan. 1, the amount of total property damage in a collision to be reported to a peace officer goes from $1,000 to $2,000.

Despite the increasing cost of vehicle repairs, the threshold had not changed in almost 20 years. The new limit will better reflect the current situation. It should also reduce the amount of effort and resources associated with collision reporting as motorists will no longer be required to report crashes under $2,000 to a police officer.

Alberta is responding to requests from enforce-ment agencies as well as the general public to raise the current dollar damage limit.

Following considerable discussion and consul-tation, the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators Board of Directors approved that a uniform reporting threshold be maintained and that jurisdictions increase their thresholds to $2,000 as soon as they are able. Collision re-

porting thresholds are set through the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators in co-operation with all Canadian jurisdictions. This ensures comparability of statistics across Cana-da and allows for a better analysis of trends affecting traffic safety.

In Alberta, along with total property damage of $2,000 or more (as of Jan. 1), any collision that results in a fatality or personal injury must also be reported to police.

For more information, go to www.trasporta-tion.alberta.ca or call Marlene Anderson, Office of Traffic Safety in Alberta Transportation at (780) 427-6774.

On December 7 Norbert Georget gave a an hour and a half presenta-tion to all grade 7 to 12 students and staff at Holy Cross Collegiate. A re-ally powerful message was relayed in stories from his personal experienc-es as a paramedic as well as photos from real accident scenes displayed on a big screen. He covered the real-life, serious consequences of drink-ing and driving, texting and driving, drugs and driving. Norbert Georget is a former paramedic from Saska-toon, SK who was deeply affected by the tragedy caused by drinking and driving that he saw on his job. He began speaking on the subject when he was 19 years old and has now been doing it for 28 years, making presentations across Canada. The underlying message is about mak-ing positive choices. The regular meeting at the Wheatland county council offices was kept short on Dec. 21 with many getting ready to close shop for Christmas. A few issues brought forth in previous meetings were presented to council with new information added. Curve sign

Public works replaced the curve sign on Duck Lake Road that had been knocked down a few weeks prior. vehiCle reCyCling

At the Dec. 7 meeting there was discussion and a request to investigate vehicle-recycling options for ratepayers. Part of the discussion included the

possibility of incorporating vehicle pick-up/recy-cling as a part of, hamlet clean-up days. Public works will be looking further into the subject and contacting vehicle pick up organizations for more information. renaming

A request to rename 5 Ave. Gleichen was brought before council. The request had been be-fore council at the beginning of November and on Dec. 21 there was a resolution made. 5 Ave. Gleichen will now be known as Wickson Avenue. seCurity

Siemens demonstrated to councillors how to use the entry code security system at the back door. There are times when a regular meeting may run after hours and Siemens wanted to make sure all of council know how to properly set the alarm.

The Strathmore Seed Cleaning Co-op is looking to expand their business in the near future. On Dec. 2 members held their annual general meeting to discuss the possibility of opening a new seed plant, among other items.

“This plant is 35 years old and it’s time to update it. We’re starting to put patches on patches,” said Kelly Wheeler chair-man of the board.

Wheeler said they are hoping to get enough interest from the local farmers in the next month or so to be able to raise funds to go forth with the project.

“The idea is that it will enable us to clean seed better and clean way more seed,” said Wheeler.

“The new plant will double the capacity of the old plant. It will be twice as fast. The old plant runs at about 300 bushels an hour and the new plant will run at over 600 bushels an hour.”

They want to build the plant on a new site, out of town about five to six miles. It will boast some of the latest equip-ment.

“The big thing is, it’ll have a colour sorter in it and that’s kind of the new technology we’re looking to buy,” said Wheeler.

The sorter will sort the seeds based on their colour. It will pull all of the foreign material out of the seed so all they are left with is pure seed. This area is what Wheeler said they call a deficit seed-producing area, with most of the seed coming in from other areas. Wheeler said they want to make it so that

more seed is produced here and they can export to more peo-ple. The current plant serves about 300 farmers in the area.

“We’re looking at lots of old plants in this county and we’re looking and thinking maybe it will serve all members of this county,” said Wheeler.

He said the board wants to generate a million dollars worth of equity, which needs to be done before they can really get started. He said there is approximately half a million commit-ted at this point. There is a share structure set up so farmers can buy shares and it will also buy them discount cleaning at the new plant. A 200-acre share is worth $1,000.

“We’re hoping to get some strategic partnerships with the new seed companies that are starting to pop up and hope-fully grow more seed in this area for export to other areas,” said Wheeler.

A big chunk of the equity for the new plant will come from the sale of the old property, and the old plant would be dis-posed of.

Much of the equipment in the current plant still has value, said Wheeler, and will likely be traded in for newer equip-ment. He said it is the facility itself that is almost outdated. He said the construction and renovations on it are becoming too costly. The name may be changed to encompass the whole county, but that is something that would happen later down the road. Wheeler said the county will help support the ap-provals and maybe some of their construction needs.

“For the most part we’re looking at the members getting this thing built ourselves,” said Wheeler.

Once everything is in place, they hope construction will be complete in the summer of 2012.

Seed cleaning plant looks to increase its production

Carols and Candles took place at Strathmore extended Care on Dec. 20 and at the Wheatland Lodge on Dec. 21. Carolers put on a Christ-mas production for the seniors, bringing them some Christmas joy and happiness.

Drug TraffickingOn Dec. 20, the Strathmore

RCmP Crime Reduction Unit completed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act Search War-rant in the Brentwood area of Strathmore.

As a result, Colin Goddard, 32 years-old of Strathmore, has been charged with Possession of marihuana & Oxycodone for the purpose of Trafficking and Pos-session of Proceeds Obtained by Crime. The RCmP seized a large amount of marihuana and Oxy-codone.

Goddard is set to appear in Provincial Court in Strathmore on Jan. 7.Taxi car-Jacking resulTs in inJury

At approximately 9:10 a.m. on Dec. 22, the Strathmore RCmP were advised of a car jacking which had just occurred on Wran-gler Way, in an industrial area just outside of the city of Calgary lim-its in the county of Rocky View, east of 84th Street and south of township road 240.

Preliminary investigation be-lieves that apparently the taxi drive had stopped to assist two male individuals, one of whom was bleeding. The two suspects then car-jacked the vehicle from the driver, who fought the two culprits, suffering cuts to his hands in the process. The driver was treated at hospital for his in-juries which are non-life threaten-ing.

The vehicle was located very soon thereafter in the Falconridge area of Calgary by the Calgary Police Service. One male was located by CPS and arrested on behalf of the RCmP and the other male is still being sought.

Charges have not yet been laid and the investigation is continu-ing by both RCmP and CPS.

Update - Peter Joseph Neidig (Age 29) from Calgary has been charged with armed robbery, ag-gravated assault, possession of a weapon (knife) for the purpose of committing an offence, theft over $5,000 of the taxicab and pos-session of stolen property.

Neidig was brought before a justice of the peace on Dec. 23 for a bail hearing and was denied bail and remanded into custody. He will appear in Strathmore Pro-vincial Court on Jan. 4.Drug search WarranT

in the early morning of Dec. 19, Chestermere RCmP Detachment executed a drug search warrant at a residence near Stonemere Place in Chestermere. Several pounds of cannabis marihuana were seized as a result, along with drug paraphernalia and al-most $1,000 cash. Charged are Scott Willem Schurink, age 26,

for possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, and Devon Brajkovic, age 23, for possession of a con-trolled substance. Schurink was released on $1,000 bail and his next court appearance is Jan. 18 in Strathmore Provincial Court. Brajkovic’s next court appear-ance is mar. 1 also in Strathmore Provincial Court.

it should be noted that the success of this search warrant is largely due to members of the public who have stepped forward. Without their assistance through tips and reports, the police would have been unable to apprehend these individuals. Public assis-tance is always appreciated, and Chestermere RCmP would like to recognize them.armeD robbery aT shoppers Drug marT

On Dec. 22, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Strathmore RCmP responded to a complaint of an armed robbery at the Shoppers Drug mart in Strathmore. The suspect, who was armed with what was believed to be a fire-arm, entered the store through the main entrance and demanded the on-duty pharmacist provide access to secured pharmaceuti-cal supplies. The suspect filled a bag with a quantity of phar-maceutical drugs and exited the store through the main entrance and fled the location in a white truck. There were approximately 20 customers and employees (in-cluding small children) inside the store during the robbery, none of whom were injured.

Officers located the vehicle believed to be used by the sus-pect to flee the location in a near by neighborhood. The vehicle had been reported stolen to the Calgary Police Service at approx-imately 2 p.m. earlier in the day.

A thorough search of the area was completed by the Calgary RCmP Police Dog Service, how-ever the suspect was not located.

were also in attendance but were unable to ensure his survival.

The investigation is continuing with scene examination, along with interviewing of witnesses and other involved persons. The RCmP investigators are from the Gleichen Detachment as well as the major Crimes Unit, Forensic identification Section and Police Service Dog Section.

An autopsy was planned for the following day in Calgary, which is hoped to provide a posi-tive identification as well as the cause of death.suspecT chargeD in gleichen murDer

On Dec. 23, at approximately 5:30 p.m., the Strathmore RCmP were notified that two right side tires on a 2006 Dodge 2500 pick up Truck had been slashed.

The vehicle had been parked at the strip mall in front of the New Releases Video Store. The vehicle driver attended to Sobey’s parking lot. The impact of the speed bumps blew both the punctured tires, which had significant cuts.

The vehicle driver witnessed approximately 6-8 youths in the area near the strip mall at this time.

if you have any further informa-tion regarding this crime or others please contact the Strathmore RCmP at 403-934-3968 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TiPS.

The UFA Bisons hosted Rus-sia HC Severstal in an exhibi-tion game at the Strathmore Family Centre Dec. 21. The jam-packed evening opened with a performance from the Strathmore Skate Club before the Strathmore Youth Choir sang the national anthem. The Bisons players and parents, with the support of the com-munity, raised over $1,400 and approximately 4,000 lbs of food for the food bank. One team in particular, the Wheatland Braves AA peewee squad, brought 500 lbs of food prior to the game and were rewarded with the opportu-nity to meet both teams prior to the game. Local half-pint players entertained the crowd during the intermission breaks, while Santa took time from his busy sched-ule to take pictures after the first period. All-in-all, it was a fan-tastic evening of fun during the Christmas season. After losing the first exhibition game in High River on Dec. 21, the Bisons bounced back to defeat Russia 6-4 on home ice.

The Strathmore Rockies were in the giving spirit this holiday season.

The local women’s hockey team pro-vided their time, hockey knowledge and Christmas spirit to a pair of girls teams in the community.

Players from the Rockies hosted a practice for the Strathmore bantam girls team on Dec. 19, and one for the pee-wee girls team on Dec. 21 at the Strath-more Family Centre.

“We do this to give back and give a little bit of our hockey knowledge to the young girls coming up,” said Rock-ies captain Kaley Herman after the pee-wee practice. “When I started (hockey), there wasn’t a lot of girls playing at the time, so there wasn’t really many people to look up to. There was no (Western Women’s Hockey League) that we could aspire to play in. So I think that it’s good (for us) to come out and let them know that there is something out there for women. Wheather it’s college hockey or our league.”

According to Herman, a good chunk of the practice was used to teach the girls how to use their edges while skat-

ing. They also worked on stick-handling and controlling the puck in the offensive zone.

“I think it’s really beneficial because – it’s surprising - they talk about a lot of the same stuff that we do in our prac-tice,” said peewee coach Mike Corbiell. “To have somebody (they look up to) come in and reinforce that is awesome. I think the way girls hockey is develop-ing, there is more opportunity (for these girls) than there ever was.”

According to Corbiell, the peewee girls have improved tremendously since the start of the season.

“We take baby steps – we keep im-proving,” said the coach. “At the begin-ning of the year, I went ‘oh, my good-ness, we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.’

“It’s amazing how much we’ve pro-gressed. The last time I looked there is eight teams in the league – and at the Christmas break here – we were in third place, two points out of second. It’s re-ally awesome.

“For a team goal, the girls want to make playoffs and they want to go to provincials. They’re on the right track.”

With the help of the Rockies, that team goal is closer than before.

Shannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

What began as an idea for a 12-hour fundraising ringette tournament quickly turned into a day filled with activities. Jill Kathol organized Ringers for a Reason, which took place on Dec. 18 in honour of Dwayne Marshman who is currently battling cancer.

“We have a ringette association and teams of all ages because of him, and for some of us, he’s coached us our whole lives,” said Jill Kathol, event organizer.

“We just thought, what a great way to show him our support.”

Kathol said as the community began to hear about what was happening, the event grew larger, becoming a 24-hour event.

“Dwayne is a really big community person. He has his hands in everything around town from the arena to the hall. It was endless, the support we got,” said Kathol.

There was a head shaving during the day, and a Santa skate. In the evening there was a dinner and silent auction. Jaydee Bixby and local talent performed for the crowd of people.

Rockyford partnered with the Cal-gary Health Trust. The funds raised will be going towards patient comfort care at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre at the Foothills hospital.

“We haven’t decided exactly because we raised more money than we had planned on so we have to pick a few more things to fund. But it’s mostly for patient comfort care at the Tom Baker,” said Marshman.

A large portion of the funds raised will

be going to Unit 57, which is the stem cell bone marrow transplant program. The rest will be split between other ar-eas such as the hostel, said Marshman.

Travelling from Rockyford to Calgary for his treatments can often be taxing, and there are times he will stay at the hostel at the Foothills hospital. He said some people have to be there every day for radiation and will stay in the hostel. Marshman said a lot of rural residents stay in the hostel because often it’s too far of a drive to go back and forth every day.

“Patient comfort care is anytime you have to stay in the hospital whether you’re rural or from the city, it affects you,” said Marshman.

Because he knows first hand the amount of time treatment can keep one away from their family, Kathol said Marshman decided an iPad project would be a great way to keep families connected.

“We decided we wanted to fund an iPad project that they have been want-ing to start there for awhile,” said Kathol.

“What it does, is it connects patients that are receiving cancer treatment with their families while they are in the hos-pital.”

The day far surpassed everyone’s ex-pectations, turning out to be an even bigger success than they had hoped for.

“We don’t have a final number of what we raised throughout the day yet, we’re still working on that but we know that we’ve at least reached $50,000,” said Kathol.

Marshman wasn’t well enough to coach this year, but hopes to return to it next year.
