What Are Educational Standards

Educational standards are the learning goals for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. Educational standards help teachers ensure their students have the skills and knowledge they need to be successful, while also helping parents understand what is expected of their children.

Standards DO NOT tell teachers how to teach- just what students are expected to know

STATE EDUCATION CHIEFS AND GOVERNORS IN 48 STATES CAME TOGETHER TO DEVELOP

THE COMMON CORE, A SET OF CLEAR COLLEGE - AND CAREER-READY STANDARDS

FOR KINDERGARTEN THROUGH 12TH GRADE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS /L ITERACY AND

MATHEMATICS. TODAY, 43 STATES HAVE VOLUNTARILY ADOPTED AND ARE WORKING

TO IMPLEMENT THE STANDARDS, WHICH ARE DESIGNED TO ENSURE THAT STUDENTS

GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL ARE PREPARED TO TAKE CREDIT BEARING

INTRODUCTORY COURSES IN TWO - OR FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE PROGRAMS OR ENTER THE WORKFORCE. (FROM COMMONCORE.ORG)

What is Common Core

Why Did NY Adopt the Common Core

In 2010 the New York State Board of Regents adopted the Common Core State Standards to make sure that all students succeed once they graduate from high school

Prior to adoption New York State made a few modifications to the Common Core State Standards- these modifications mostly involved adding Pre-K standards

As is stated on EngageNY.org- the standards are meant to be a road map- with school districts deciding on the journey

What Has C-A Done to Prepare Students

Began the process of implementation in the 2010-2011 school year with Professional Development concentrating on what the standards were. (Full implementation required by 2013-14 at 3-8. High School requirements began last year and will gradually increase each year)

From that year to now- Professional development on the shifts, modules, and changes in teaching practices utilizing Questar III staff developers and coaches from Coxsackie-Athens staff
