Straw Poll

Which position is closest to where you stand?

A. Education is broken. We need MOOCs to fix it.

B. MOOCs will disrupt education, and force it to change

C. MOOCs are just one of many interesting current developments. We can learn from them, and incorporate these lessons into the full range of our practice

D. MOOCs are just a passing fad. I plan to ignore them until they go away.

“I guess we all knew the MOOC bubble would burst sometime, but I'm saying it's happened this week - it just doesn't know it yet. The reason? Commercial MOOC providers have started making noises about becoming elearning courseware providers for standard education providers.”

Terms of Reference of the Working Group

To advise the Welsh Government on:

the potential competitive threat posed by global technology-based developments to the higher education sector in Wales;the potential opportunities afforded by technological development for the Welsh higher education sector at a time of constrained public expenditure;to what extent the Welsh higher education sector is working collectively to bring economies of scale to maximise the opportunities afforded; andto what extent technological development may provide a platform to increase participation in part-time and full-time higher education, again in a period of constrained public spending.

Discussion

You are a senior manager at your institution. You have been given funding to employ a learning technologist to investigate the opportunities and threats associated with MOOCs and OERs

What would be your terms of reference for that person? What questions would you ask them to address? What issues would you expect them to take into account?

Feedback

Will collate responses here. Perhaps also do a show of hands to find out what

the key questions/issues are? Further discussion on the most popular topics….
