December 2016 / January 2017Volume 88, Number 12

From the Commodore I was hospitalized last Thursday. I didn’t know how sick I was until the next morning when the nephrologist said he wasn’t sure how I survived the night. The kidney failure explains why I wasn’t getting my strength back. I really appreciate the support and last minute food and wine procure-ment by the Keelers, Altmanns and Nesheims. I look forward to seeing pictures of the Lighted Boat Parade. I also thank Tim Kelbert for the unending task of keeping the hoist run-

ning. Lou Pambianco has served us as an outstanding treasurer. He was the one who obtained the mortgage for the Club remodel. It is his and Jennifer Whall and Greg Haws’ attention that allows us to get things done. It has been a pleasure to serve as your Commodore. We are a relatively small yacht club, yet we function as a large one because of all the dedicated volunteers.

Harmony

I saw a cartoon once where a gentleman was entering Heaven and there was a sign posted at the entrance: NO DISCUSSION OF RELIGION OR POLITICS ALLOWED. The caption: “I always wondered how they kept it so peaceful here”. I travel a lot and whenever I get a chance I visit other yacht clubs. It is amazing how often other clubs are having their problems or have had serious problems with rifts in their club. Considering the contentious national election we just had, I feel fortunate that we are a peaceful club with very little friction. Whether it is following the idea of the cartoon, our mutual love of sailing and boating or just a nice group of people constituting our club, I feel fortunate to be part of it.

One of the notable characteristics of our club is that members are free with volunteering their time. The Corinthians just had their annual crab cook-off and it went without a hitch because of the many volunteers: thank you to all of you! Sometimes problems creep up that are not noticed, but members step forward to take care of them. A case in point is the ivy that was getting overgrown in our lower parking area. Thanks to Donn and Linda Carmody for stepping forward to take care of this problem! Speaking of volunteers, sometimes it can get out of hand. I admit to personally taking white towels home to launder them with full intention to return to the club. Sometimes they sit at home until someone notices the lack of towels then I “remember” to return them. Best laid intentions can go astray, it happens to everyone. Please remember to return Club items that you have taken home to clean. Replacing “lost items” can prevent having to spend money to replace them. I received a very nice letter from a member with questions about the food service. While most people are very happy with Jody and Fresh Prep in the kitchen, there are questions that arise. This is a natural process and I do not discourage such questions. Often, it is a matter of edu-cation where some information needs to be shared. Some-times slight changes may be needed. I feel very fortunate to

work with Jody Lombardo and Fresh Prep. I feel they have a lot of talent in the kitchen and more impor-tantly are open to suggestions. I just want everyone to know, the food service is a work in progress. Sure we love the compliments, but if something does not seem right, do not hesitate to ask. Circling back to the first paragraph, one of the greatest secrets to harmony is open communication! Do not grumble and complain to people that cannot change things, let us know your concerns.

As 2016 comes to a close and I look back at the Social events that we’ve offered this year, I sin-cerely hope that you have enjoyed them as much as I have. It’s been wonderful getting to meet so many members of our yacht club. The Social Committee has done an outstand-ing job this year. Thank you for your hard work, creativity and friendship. Its volunteers like these who make the Club a special place. Thanks to - Rich & Dorie Green, Mary & Stefan Berlinski, Dan & Nancy Larson, Chuck & Nancy Cobery and Jason Lauer. And a special thank you to my wife, Susan Altmann, who has contributed so much to these events this year. I couldn’t have done it without your help.

Now, on to the Social events:

The Thanksgiving Potluck was a huge suc-cess with over 70 people attending. Four turkeys were deliciously prepared and the Club decorated by Mary & Stefan Berlinski, Dan & Nancy Larson, Judy & Tom Webster and Susan Altmann. The side dishes were delicious and Ann & Steve Niemann’s slide show presentation of their trip to Cuba was a highlight of the evening.

By the time you read this, the Christmas tree will be up and the Club in Holiday spirit. On Dec 3rd, the Harbor will once again come alive with the many decorated boats for the holidays. The Lighted Boat Parade is a community favorite and the harbor will be filled with people enjoying the show. Thanks to Kelly Nesheim and his team for organizing this popular event. And for children and grandchildren, mark your calendar for Sunday, Dec 18th for the Children’s Christ-mas Party. Carole & Mark Hamlin will be hosting this year with help from elves Jan DeWitt and Mary Berlinski. So come on down and enjoy the fun, sing Christmas carols and meet Santa. Don’t forget to make your reservations for the New Year’s Eve Party. The theme this year is “A Time-less Evening” and the club will be transformed into a magical place. There will be a DJ, dancing, a sit down dinner, hats, noise makers and champagne. There is limited seating, so make your reservations early. If you’re unable to attend dinner, the Club will be open to all members at 10:30 pm to bring in the New Year. Watch for more information about this party. Looking forward to January 2017, the Cruising Committee will host a Potluck Brunch on New Year’s Day. Check the email blasts for more information. The 2017 calendar of events is being finalized, so be on the lookout for the WISS seminars on Wednesday nights. Lastly, the Installation Dinner will be held on Jan 14th at the Pasatiempo Golf Club.

I want to thank Chuck Murray for serving as our Commodore this year and keeping our Club on an even keel. Also, two Board members, Bret Gripen-straw, Regatta Chair and Lou Pambianco, Treasurer, are stepping down from their posts after several years of service. Thank you all for providing excellent lead-ership to the Yacht Club. Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to next year as Vice Commodore. Wish-ing everyone Happy Holidays and a safe and healthy New Year. See you at the Club

Recreational Boaters of California De-cember/January News RBOC is continuing its service to California recreational boaters by vigilantly monitoring state and national legislation affecting your boating inter-ests. Below is a small sampling of most important accomplishments on the behalf of California boaters. To see a summary of current important issues, read the RBOC Boater Briefs at http://www.rboc.org/boater-brief/. Contact your club’s RBOC representa-tive, Lorenzo Rota, if you have any questions.

RBOC URGES US EPA TO REVISE, IM-PROVE DRAFT COPPER DOCUMENT PRIOR TO ADOPTION

RBOC has submitted formal comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency [USEPA’s) regarding its Draft Aquatic Life Ambient Estuarine/Marine Water Quality Criteria for Cop-per – 2016, noting a number of significant issues and setting forth recommendations to improve the important and precedent-setting document. This is-sue is crucial to boaters who use anti-fouling paints dependent on copper for their effectiveness to keep hulls clean.

RBOC OPPOSING SANTA ANA REGIONAL WATER BOARD’S COPPER PLAN

While Newport Bay is far from our Monterey Bay, RBOCs work in this area is important for us here in the Monterey Bay to make sure no precedents are set at the state level which could impact our boating activities here. RBOC is opposing the copper implementa-tion plan proposed by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board, Santa Ana Region that would significantly impact the ability of recreational boaters in the area to utilize copper-based anti-fouling paints. RBOC’s concerns have been submitted to the regional board through formal comments regarding the proposed Basin Plan Amendments to Incorporate Total Maximum Daily Loads for Copper and Non-TMDL Action Plans for Other Metals in Newport Bay. RBOC also testified at the public hearing the regional board held on October 28.

Email Newsletter Signup

RBOC periodically notifies interested boat-ers of important issues that may affect their ability to enjoy boating in California. Go to www.rboc.org/email-sign-up to keep current on hot issues. You will always have the option to be removed from the list and RBOC will never sell or give your information to any organization or corporation. Thank you for your willingness to stay informed and help keep boating accessible in California!

Thanks to Port Commissioner Bill Lee

Bill Lee has served as Santa Cruz Port Commis-sioner for 24 years, being a voice of reason and a friend to all who use and enjoy the Santa Cruz Harbor. Bill is unas-suming, genteel, compassionate and committed to public service - qualities he employed throughout his service to the harbor and the Port District. Santa Cruz’s commercial fishermen have had no greater ally on the Port Commission than Bill Lee. He was a tireless supporter of the fleet, listening to their needs and advocating for improvements to fishery facilities and services. He has been a champion for the environment and for non-profit businesses such as Save Our Shores, Coastal Watershed Council and O’Neill Sea Odyssey, all currently located in the harbor. He is an expert sailor and boat-builder with a deep understanding of and apprecia-tion for all boaters, harbors, and marine-related busi-nesses, including the challenges they face. Bill believes in a harbor built by the community to serve the community, a harbor that provides access to the Monterey Bay for all who seek it. The Santa Cruz Harbor is in a near-constant state of change with its dynamic environment and the many

competing demands on its resources. Bill Lee was a statesman who helped lead the Port District through complex and challenging growth and change includ-ing the post-tsunami rebuilding, purchasing the new dredge, extinguishing old debt, and myriad other projects that will ensure access for harbor users and visitors well into the future. His contributions have included a gift for boiling complicated subjects down to their essence, bringing clarity, reason and fairness to the commission’s deliberations. He is creative and open to new ideas from others, always mindful of what is in the best interest of the boaters and the com-munity at large. Bill Lee’s contributions to the Santa Cruz Harbor community have been profound and enduring. On behalf of the entire Santa Cruz Harbor organization, thank you, Commissioner Bill Lee, for your dedicated service and leadership. Your open-minded and thoughtful analyses, gentle humor and commitment to providing access and opportunities to all will be greatly missed. A Facebook page has been created where we invite you to send Bill your well-wishes, or post your stories or photos as a tribute to Bill’s service. Lisa EkersPort Director
