Women finish 8th; Men 17th at NCAA West Championships
On a chilly November morning at the Stanford golf course, the women’s and men’s teams concluded the 2011 season at the NCAA West Region Championships. The meet brings together schools from across the west to vie for bids to the NCAA Championships, held ten days later in Terre Haute, Indiana. The women’s team finished 8th overall, six points behind 7th place finisher Arizona State University. The top seven teams were selected to run at the NCAA championships, leaving the women disappointed but hungry to return for another shot next year. The women were once again led by Sarah Sumpter,
Peterson qualifies for NCAA Champs who finished 28th overall and covered the 6k course in 20:58. Behind Sarah, Alycia Cridebring finished 45th, Krista Drechsler finished 51st, Kristine Lozoya finished 57th, Kristina Taylor finished 67th, Katie Fry finished 69th, and Shannon Harcus finished 134th. Jon Peterson highlighted the men’s performance with his 10th place showing. He put himself in contention to earn an individual bid to the NCAA Championships early in the race, and raced a gritty last 3k to secure the final individual qualifying position. He covered the 10k course in 29:30 and in doing so earned his second straight bid to the NCAA Championships.

Peterson finishes 71st at NCAA Championships On Monday, November 21st, senior Jon Peterson concluded his cross country career as an Aggie at the NCAA championships in Terre, Haute Indiana. Peterson covered the 10k course in 30:34.5 and finished 71st overall. The trip marked his second straight appearance at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, and makes him the only Aggie in program history make back to back appearances at that meet at the Division 1 level. Peterson will now shift his focus to the track, where he will look to make his first appearance at the NCAA Track and Field Championships. Last season, as a redshirt, he ran 13:41 for 5k and 3:43 for 1500. As he seeks to improve upon those marks in the season ahead, he will undoubtedly place himself among the top collegiate distance runners in the country.

Looking back into the spring of 2011, I would have never guessed that I would have come this far. The plan was simple: run cross country in the fall to get in shape for track season in the winter and spring. However, going into cross country camp at Point Reyes the plans started to shift directions. My teammates, acquaintances at the time, were talking about going for the win at the Big West Conference and making an appearance at nationals. Soon enough I started to see my own goals and aspirations parallel with team’s. And slowly but surely, I was no longer just a track runner getting into shape; I was a member of the UC Davis cross country team. My relationship with the team changed dramatically throughout the course of the season. This could be from a number of things: traveling together on Sunday long runs, sweating it out with Katie Fry and Sam Kearney on the course, or from the team abs we did every Monday and Thursday. Regardless, one thing was for certain, these ladies are now my family and I would not let them down. Though I was certainly not a top runner on the team, I was still given an opportunity to run at conference down at Riverside. With all of our hard work that started in the early summer months, we were now able to show everyone what we were made of and walked away champions, something I will never forget. Even though the running portion of my season was now over, a selected few were placed into the regionals pool. But this did not stop the other eleven Aggie women from cheering on our team at the Stanford course the morning of November 12, 2011. This is also a day I and my team, will never forget. Not because of an outstanding performance, but because that was the day we did not make it to nationals. Not to worry though, we are just that much more hungry for it next season.

The U

has rich and deep roots both on and off the track. D
ating back to the early days of U

, w
hile we also now
have a dedicated cross country course on the far w

fter many years of success on
the conference, regional and national levels, 2007 marked a
definitive transition point between the D

eras for all athletic teams at U
C Davis.
W
hile one of the goals of the past several years has been to preserve the core identity of A
ggie XC/T&F, our conference
affiliation, traditional rivals and certain aspects of the program
have changed even as the essence of the excellence that we pursue
remains constant. O
ver the years, Aggie coaches, student-athletes
and alum have represented U
C Davis locally, across the country
and around the world at the collegiate, club, professional and U
S N

e take great pride in the program’s role in
shaping of excellent scholars, athletes and contributing mem
bers of the U
C and global comm

The 2011-2012 cross country season has already yielded good results on both the m

embers of the track &
field team are also hard at w

e are adopting a unified approach to allow
the UC D

benefit will be felt im
