Pastor & Mrs. O ’KeefeOn Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13,1988, members and friends of Brookside

Baptist Church celebrated Pastor George O’Keefe’s thirty-five years at “new” Brookside, Seven Hills. An anniversary dinner was served in the reception hall of the church and a musical program was presented in the auditorium following the dinner. This program included testimonies and vocal and instrumental selections by friends who have ministered to the congregation over the years.

Special guests for the occasion included those men (and their families) who went out from Brookside into full-time ministries during these thirty-five years. Four of the five men were in attendance: William Russell, Millersburg; Leonard Goodwin, Norwalk; James Ruck, Gabon; and Douglas Wilson, Gabon. Not present was Clayton Decker, Coral, Michigan.

Hearts rejoiced as each testimony echoed praise and thanksgiving to God for what the ministries of Brookside Baptist Church have meant to the special guests and their families over the years.

In addition, the O’Keefes were overwhelmed by the surprise purse of money presented to them, making the prospect of a trip to England and Ireland (home of their ancestors) probable.

25 YEARS AT LITCHFIELDAfter the Worship Service with the Rev.

Paul Mayo of Oberlin as special speaker, over 90 members and friends enjoyed a Thanksgiving-style dinner.

The afternoon program consisted of several musical selections by woodwind and brass instruments, a vocal duet, a choir number, a tuba solo, a recitation of the history of the Litchfield Baptist Church during the past 25 years, and remarks by the Rev. Kenneth Nelson and the Rev. Paul Mayo about their long and pleasant associations with the Shimps.

Pastor and Mrs. Shimp were presented with a money tree, two throw pillows from the Sunday School, and a quilt which was made from squares portraying events or remembrances of the past 25 years, each signed by its creator.

The 25 th anniversary observance of Pastor David and Mrs. Shimp’s coming to Litchfield to serve in the Baptist Church was celebrated on November 6, 1988.

A NEW YEAR AHEADAnd we ponder - what will lie in our path in 1989? What will be the highlights and low ebbs

for our families, our churches, and our nation this year? Not being prophets, we can only wonder. But because our God is in control, we do not face the new year with apprehension. We face it with confidence and resolve.

How can we help but be confident when “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it and is safe.” (Proverbs 18:10)

May I suggest an area of resolve. We all know people who need to be saved. With God’s help, let’s focus on someone, pray for him, become genuine friends with him, and when the time is right, present Christ to him. Ira Sankey’s old familiar chorus still hits the nail on the head.

Lord, lay some soul upon my heart,And love that soul thru me,

And may I earnestly do my part,To win that soul for Thee.

If we would each do that in 1989, it will be a great year, no matter what else may happen. By the way, something else just might happen - something really great. Be listening for His shout!

MEMORIAL OFFERINGResponse to the William A. Brock Memorial Offering has been very encouraging. We anti

cipate announcing the total received in next month’s issue of the O.I.B. As the current issue goes to the printer, the amount received thus far is $10,936.30.

A NEW STATE REPRESENTATIVEYes, this is a priority. No, we do not have one yet. Yes, the search committee has been

active. No, it’s not an easy task. Yes, please continue to pray for them. And yes, yes, yes, God answers prayer.

TODAY(Editor’s Note: Reprint of article in the January 1938 issue of the O.I.B. written by Pastor

M. McLain Witter, pastor of Central Baptist Church, Columbus, Ohio. In 50 years, SOME THINGS HAVE NOT CHANGED!)

Today is our only possession. The present is given to all, but how carelessly it is put to use. With the close of the old year, a day of accounting comes. Letters and accounts are filed and

housed away, having left their substance sifted into figures on the books. The stock in shelf and store room, measured, counted and weighed, yields its quota to the reckoning, and the measure bearing the year’s work is readily balanced.

For some, the heaped up wealth falls into deposits already well-filled: it has been one more year of conquest. For others it has been a year of dread. Shrunken resources are insufficient to meet the rising tide of demand. The secret will not lie silent on the record page. Relentlessly the austere hand of business and industry marks out defeat and humiliation. Cold shadows portray a grief which cannot be understood. Tired hands, weary minds, and hopeless souls linger on the margins of former haunts, waiting for crumbs of fortune, until heart and flesh fail. And such are the parables of life today. Suffering, stark and real! Tragedy, acute and baffling! And yet through it all man will not leant.

In all the varied changes we have stood witness, in some of them we have played a part, and yet how brief the period in which they all occurred. Our lips confess involuntarily that time is short, but where is the response within our heart? How will these visions influence our action of tomorrow?

Of all the sublime promises of Scripture, that which was given to Moses, “Certainly I will be with thee,” is most precious to the child of faith. It was expressed so very beautifully by our Lord Jesus Christ, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the age.”

How much of our life or service is mined or wasted because we exercise our own choice instead of ascertaining what God is doing and where He requires our presence? We think in terms of success. We try and command it. We call to our aid every possibility. At last we turn back, disheartened and ashamed. All of this is useless! God might test us, but He will not allow us to make mistakes. As Christians, naturally we desire to know our Father’s will and as we look into His Sacred Book we find that those who have had power are those who dared to trust God, even though they at times must have been perplexed as we are now.

We know how Abraham left kindred and country and started, with no other Guide than God, across the trackless desert to a land which he knew not. We know how, for forty years, the Israelites were led through the land of Sinai, with its labyrinths of red sandstone and its wastes of sand. We know how Joshua, in entering the Land of Promise, was able to meet the difficulties of an unknown region and to overcome great and warlike nations because he looked to the Captain of the Lord’s Host, who ever leads to victory. Let us, with the young man by the side of Elisha, learn what God will do for us today. “And He answered, Fear not, for they that be with us are more than they that be with them...And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw and behold...horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.” (II Kings 6:16,17)

Once we were strangers, alienated from the covenants of God. Once we stood afar off, but today we have been brought nigh by the Blood of Calvary. Today a new relationship grips the soul. Frequently the Apostle Paul expresses it by saying, “in Christ.” Who can fathom the depth of such a union? This relationship to the Christian is very real. The child of God is not a loose stone lying disconnected and alone; he is built into Christ the Foundation and, so, is one with Him; he is not a branch severed from a tree with no possibility of beauty, growth or fruitfulness, but he is a living part of the True Vine, sharing the fulness and freshness of His life; he is not a disconnected branch, but is united with Christ the Living Head, a member of His body, the Church, and partaking of all the wonder of His life and influence. t

The elements of such a relationship are beyond human conception. We read, “But of God are ye in Christ Jesus.” Infinite power will be seen working out what Infinite Love had planned. For me to live today means fellowship with Christ. Fellowship in the truest sense of the word involves submission to the will of God.

Today we are not concerned in just “getting by” in our experience, but we are determined to realize for ourselves that living hope of conquest. “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.” Our God does not purpose for us that we should merely get through the battle, but that we should come out of it rejoicing, strengthened by such times of testing. Victory is sweet, but the Christian could never conquer apart from Christ. God yet waits for the soul to fully trust Him. God awaits the Christian who will leave all for His sake. Thoughtlessly we sing: “I’ll go where you want me to go, dear Lord.”

Today God stands waiting to hear, “Here am I Lord, send me,” from our lips. Such obedience to God never limits the life or service of the Christian. The testimony of every saint has been, “He brought me forth into a large place.” The Lord does not lead men backward, but ever onward, outward, and upward. Matthew was led into a large place when he left the seat of customs to follow Jesus. Peter had never known anything larger than a fishing boat on the Sea of Galilee until Jesus made him a “fisher of men.” Saul of Tarsus at the best was only a theological hair-splitter, a heresy-hunter, until Christ appeared unto him and filled his heart with a passion for the souls of men. If the voice of the patriarch and prophet and apostle could be heard today, it would cry, “Never say ‘no’ to God. If He calls thee, go! He will lead thee into a large place.”

Most every Christian has a certain contempt for the little things of life. The farm boy still goes to the city to seek a more abundant life. Never does he dream how small a part of the great city he will occupy.

The distinctive glory of our faith lies in the exaltation of the humble, the lifting up of the fallen, the giving of light to darkness, the providing of life where death reigned. Faith in Calvary makes the poorest cottage more glorious than a king’s palace, the meanest task greater than that of a world ruler.

It is sin that narrows life, clips the wings with which the spirit would soar to lofty heights. Hence the conquest of sin by grace is like the liberation of a slave. Iron doors and brazen gates are tom asunder and the captive moves out into God’s universe to learn how life enlarges with each new step in grace. Our Lord calls us today to see, to hear, to think, to feel, to act in view of greater victory. Did any who followed Jesus fail to find a more abundant life?

It is said that Queen Elizabeth was sending an ambassador far away on important and difficult business when he asked, “But what will become of my family and my business?” To which the Queen replied, “You take care of my business and I will take care of yours.” If we are willing to be led of the Lord, forsaking all to follow Him, He will take care of our interests. He has pledged Himself to do it. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Today as I walked through the campus of the Ohio State University I was suddently startled by the booming of the noon chimes in Orton Hall. I looked at my own watch and lo! the slender hands were pointing exactly to the hour of twelve. It scarcely seemed possible that such a tiny piece of mechanism on my wrist could keep time with the huge machinery that filled an entire room of the tower. But the proof was before me, and I paused to consider the difference in proportion of the two instruments, I understood as never before that the most insignificant saint of God needed only to be clean, in running order, and divinely regulated to keep time with God.

Again this year these churches have generated a dividend from a group policy on their property and liability insurance with Brotherhood Mutual Insurance in the amount of $3,727.00. This check is given to the Ohio Association. Since 1981, such gifts to the Association have totaled $13,693.00. This was possible because of the good loss rates these churches have had.

This annual gift is a real “boost” to the general fund — again this shows what churches can do for the Association by cooperating together.

EVANGELISTIC CAMPAIGN AT MADISON AVENUE, CLEVELAND

In October of 1988, Dr. John Carrara was with the Madison Avenue Baptist Church of Cleveland for a Sunday through Sunday evangelistic campaign and also spoke each morning in the 4th through 8th grade chapel of Westside Baptist Christian School. There were many decisions for salvation and dedication both in the church services and school chapel.

Pastor James Hunt reports, “Dr. Carrara had unusual rapport with our kids 4th through 8th grade as he told true-life stories he had known through his ministry and related them to where kids live in everyday life. In my many years of hosting evangelists in my pastorates, I have never had an evangelist so well received by our people. He continues to preach with unusual clarity and great spiritual power. Like Moses of old, his faculties are not dimmed and his natural force of voice is not abated. This is the second time Dr. Carrara has been with Madison Avenue Baptist in the last three years.”

4 THE OHIO INDEPENDENT BAPTIST - December, 1988/January, 1989

“BEHOLD, ALL THINGS ARE BECOME NEW.”by M arcia Elmore

If there is anything a woman enjoys, it is something new. Be it a new dress, new shoes, new piece of furniture, new drapes, the list is innumerable. It always pleases us to have someone compliment our choices, doesn’t it? But, see if this rings a bell with you. You’ve worn that new dress a few times to church, and after a short period of time, you wear it again. Someone proceeds to compliment you again on your good taste and what is our usual response? “This old thing? Why I’ve had it for ages.” The newness wears off quickly, wouldn’t you say?

This is inevitable with a new dress or new shoes, etc., but God has made a purchase for us that far exceeds anything that we could think of or ask for, and His Son paid the price for it. Let’s begin the New Year with asking God to cause our minds to be renewed with all that we have in Him that’s new. Shall we start?

Foryou and me, God made a new covenant, Hebrews 12:24. He has provided a new and living way when we accept His Son, Hebrews 10:20. This is the new birth. We are given a new nature, II Peter 1:4; and the Spirit makes us a new creature, II Corinthians 5:17 and Galatians 6:15. We must continually let Him do His work. Therefore, we “also should walk in newness of life,” Romans 6:4. He has given us a new name in glory, Revelation 2:17. He is preparing a place for us (a new home). John 14:2. The Lord Jesus “shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body, according to the working whereby He is able even to subdue all things unto Himself.” We will have a new body, Philippians 3:21. There will be new heavens and a new earth, Revelation 21:1; Isaiah 65:17; 66:22. His mercies, “They are new every morning: Great is His faithfulness,” Lamentations 3:23.

With all of that, we have just begun. Let us not let the newness wear off!“He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear,

and shall trust in the Lord.” Psalm 40:3.

It was somehow lost in the mail and Marcia and her husband were in Iowa for the holidays and so a duplicate could not be obtained. If we give our “hurt” to God, and refuse to cherish ill will — and take a positive attitude of praying for God’s best for the one who has wronged us, and if we maintain this position until all bitterness and resentment is swallowed up in a forgiving spirit — then we have actually gained in the attempted injury.

MISSIONS

JOHN GARRIS APPOINTED BMM NATIONAL

1 REPRESENTATIVE, CANADA

THOSE EARLY LIFE DECISIONSI have never had the joy and privilege of pastoring a church, but if I did, there is no doubt

that I would count the decisions made by teenage young people and the younger children as a very special blessing. * t

It has often been said that when a child accepts the Lord as Savior or dedicates their life to Him, it is an entire lifetime that is saved for His use. Now we all know that it doesn’t always turn out that way, but certainly the wonderful potential is there. It is always a joy to your writer to see decisions made by children and young adults.

A missionary from Baptist Mid-Missions was home on furlough from the Central African Republic. During his extensive travels among the churches, he had the experience of staying in many homes.

There was the time when he stayed in a pastor’s home in Indiana. Having several different slide presentations, the missionary was asked by the pastor to show the slides to his family that evening. He, of course, was glad to comply with the request to show the slides to the pastor, his wife and their two sons. As the slides were being shown, stretched out on the carpet was the youngest boy, eight years old, completely absorbed in what he was seeing. Unknown to anyone else, the young lad prayed to himself, committing his life to the Lord to be a missionary to Africa. Later that week, the boy came forward in response to the invitation to publicly announce that God called him to be a missionary to Africa. That missionary was your writer, and the boy was Tim Tucker, now serving with his wife, Loma, in the country of Togo under the Association of Baptists For World Evangelism.

An eight-year-old girl made a similar decision to be a missionary to Africa. She had one major goal in mind as she went to Junior High School, High School and then Bible College. It was during the Bible school years that she met a young man who committed his life to the Lord to serve Him in Africa. The two were married and applied to Baptist Mid-Missions. That woman had the blessed opportunity to serve the Lord in the Chad and Central African Republics for 21 years. She and her husband have now been with Baptist Mid-Missions for 39 years, and it all began when she was eight years old. That woman is Nina Kendrick, your writer’s wife.

I am convinced that a greater emphasis, than what I have seen in some churches in my (ravels, needs to be made to reach and challenge children and young adults for the great exciting cause of missions.

HOW TO PROMOTE MISSIONS IN THE LOCAL CHURCHI have seen many methods used in promoting missions is the church. Perhaps the most com

mon is the traditional missions conference ranging over a period of days. From what I have seen, this has been the most practical way of exposing a church family to missions, and I trust that, as the Lord tarries, it will be a method used for many years to come.

Another method used by churches is the “Missions Month” program. Usually the four Sundays of the month are set aside for missionary speakers. This type of exposure to missions can be very effective as it focuses the attention of the church family on missions over the period of one month.

The “Weekend Missions Emphasis” is still another way used to promote missions. There are churches which begin their conferences on Friday evening, have a men’s breakfast Saturday morning and then services on Saturday night and Sunday morning and evening.

Another version of the “Weekend Missions Emphasis” is for as many of the church families as possible to attend workshop sessions throughout the day on Saturday and then the regular Sunday School and morning and evening services. For variety, sessions during the day on Saturday can be divided between the men and women. All kinds of interesting seminar materials can be presented in both the women’s and men’s sessions. Whatever method is employed, die Sunday services should always be included in the promotion of missions.

Some churches have concentrated their missions emphasis only in the mid-week prayer service. I think that missions should be presented in one way or another in the mid-week service, but by no means should this be die total extent of the missions focus in the church.

There are numerous ways to promote missions among the church family. Some that come t0 mind are: conducting annual missionary conferences; having a special weekend emphasis; reading publicly and posting missionary letters; adopting a missionary or missionary family or the month; organizing women’s missionary fellowships and Men For Missions groups;

conducting a missionary poster contest; providing stamped, addressed envelopes (with paper) in a well-placed rack for your church family to take and write to your missionaries; supporting mose of the church who are able to take advantage of the various short-term and apprenticeship ministries; providing challenging and informative missions books in the church library *nd promoting their reading; having missionary speakers come and minister other than just for (ne missions conference; if possible, providing a home for missionaries on furlough; including the entire church family in providing things for the Missionary Supply Room (Missionary Clipboard); making the missionaries’ bulletin board as attractive as possible and keeping it current with prayer letters, pictures and interesting missions related news items, etc.

Making missions known in the church is closely related to making missions known in the uome. One who is excited about missions and is actively involved in the church will no doubt Carry that same positive involvement into the home.

REACHING STUDENTS FOR CHRIST AT NOTRE DAME UNIVERSITYI have heard of many unique ways used by Christians to reach people with the Gospel. Cer

tainly one worthy of mentioning is the means used by Bill and Deb Edmondson, missionaries serving in Campus Bible Fellowship, the campus ministry of Baptist Mid-Missions.

One way to get on the campus of Notre Dame University is to become a student there, and that is exactly what Bill did. He enrolled in graduate level theology courses.

h a recent prayer letter. Bill wrote, “Students realize that I may know more about what they believe than they themselves know. This allows me to speak authoritatively to them concern - lng their need of salvation.”

Bill has access to the entire campus because of his student I.D. and thereford he has opportunities to meet many students. Being with them day after day helps Bill to understand their background. He says of them, “They also are taught daily that the Bible is only the word of tnan.”

What a great opportunity for Bill and Deb to be able to witness for Christ on a university campus like Notre Dame.

Speaking of his student friends, Bill said, “We know that the angels in heaven rejoice when °ne (student) comes to trust in Jesus Christ.”

John G arris. July 1988, Rev. John Garris was appointed

to the position of Baptist Mid-Missions’ National Representative, Canada, succeeding Rev. Fred Howard who is retiring.

“Judy and I cannot put into words the joy that is ours to be back in Baptist MidMissions and returning to Canada!” stated John Garris upon his new appointment.

Brother Garris comes to the Canada office after thirteen years of missionary service in Quebec. He has had pastoral experience in Michigan and Ohio and has taught in Christian schools in Missouri.

The Garrises are members of Bethany Baptist Church of Grand Rapids, Ohio. They have three children: Lynne, 21, Brenda, 19, and Marc, 14.

Garris explains: “As National Representative, Canada, I will have four main opportunities for service. The administration of the Canadian Office will be my privilege and responsibility. It will be my joy to preach Christ and to represent the Mission in churches across Canada. I will have the privilege of working with missionaries and appointees in the burden God has placed upon their hearts. I am trusting God to use us to broaden the support base of some of our missionaries and to see others called out to meet needs around the world. Our hearts’ desire is to be used of God to see new churches started across Canada.”

CAMPPATMOS

CAMPER FEES REMAIN UNCHANGED The trustees of Camp Patmos announced

last month that due to the continued faithful financial support of local churches and individuals, the camper fees for the 1989 camping season will remain at $65.00 per week.“This marks the sixth straight year that fees have remained unchanged,” commented Dean Henry, camp treasurer, “and we praise the Lord that we are able to provide quality Christian camping at such an affordable price.” Henry also noted that in order to continue this trend into the 1990’s, Camp Patmos will need more support from local churches and individuals.

STAFF MEMBERS NEEDEDApplications are being accepted for the

1989 Camp Patmos staff. If anyone is interested in spending a summer ministering to boys and girls, teenagers, and families on an island in the middle of Lake Erie, please contact Pastor Tom Townsend, Calvary Baptist Church, 1810 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, Ohio 44870.

A CAMP PATMOS TESTIMONY“Fun in the Sun. Water - Wonderful -

Water. Ball games, new friends, pranks and well, yes, some mandatory preaching. That was my idea of Camp Patmos when I went Senior High Week, 1968. Sure, I had been to Camp Patmos before and I knew that there were spiritual lessons to be learned. But that year I was interested in other things. Little did I know that God was in control and He had great plans for my life that week. It was

that year, 1968, that God touched my life and directed me toward the pastorate.

“As a pastor, I know the value of Camp Patmos’ ministry. I know it in my life, and I know it in the lives of our campers. I have seen the results First hand. Yes, there is a very definite social side, where the campers have fun and meet new friends, but underlining everything, there is a commitment to a work of God in each heart. Whether it is on the softball field or in the services; whether it is in a cabin, or on a counselor hunt; whether it is in the water or during worship; I am convinced of the spiritual benefits of Camp Patmos in the lives of individuals. You might question the value of a week of camp, I have no question, it changed my life and I am confident that it can do the same today in yours.” - Pastor Thomas Townsend, Calvary Baptist Church, Sandusky, Ohio.CAMP PRESENTATION AVAILABLE

Russ Clark, camp director, still has several dates available to present the 1988 slide and camp presentation to your church family or youth group. Any churches interested in a Camp Patmos report may contact Russ Clark, P.O. Box 601, Cedarville, Ohio 45314, (513) 766-5847.

I Saddle Sayings From

SKYVIEW I

RANCH |The goals of a Christian camp and retreat

center and the church are identical. Only the locale and methodology differ. Sky view is an ally of the church, whether it be in a retreat setting or summer camp. The ultimate burden for Skyview is the same as for the church which in reality is the person - the boy, the girl, the teen, the woman, the man, to whom we minister the gospel.

What a God-blessed year in ’88! But the challenge of ’89 is before us - bigger/better retreats! More campers! A greater spiritual impact! Enthusiastic encouragement to the churches!RETREAT SCHEDULEJanuary 13-14 -Teens February 3-4 - SinglesFebruary 24-25 -Teens with workshops

for sponsors and youth pastors

March 3-4 -JuniorsMay 4-6 - Men’s with Dr. Robert

Domokos, speakerLOOKING AHEAD

20th Anniversary Celebration banquets. Dr. Paul Dixon, speaker. April 14 in Akron area and April 15 in Columbus area.

It is time to contact the Ranch for Spring work projects by mens, ladies, class, youth or Men for Missions groups. There is no lack of work projects. Why not schedule one now?

For retreat or project information call Bill Roloff, Executive Director, 216-674-7511 or 893-2959. Write Skyview Baptist Ranch, 7241 T.R. 319, Rt. 6, Millersburg, OH 44654-9047.

Thirty-five percent of a campership is underwritten by the church and individual regular support of Skyview.

I SMOKE SIGNALS FROM

SCIOTO HILLS IWEDDING BELLS RING

The “dinner bell” has been ringing for many “moons” at Scioto Hills Baptist Camp, calling hungry campers to the dining hall to eat. On October 15, “wedding bells” rang for the first time calling guests to the dining hall to witness the marriage of Tammy Storm and Dan Edwards. It was a gala affair as the first “squaw” and “brave” were joined together by God. The happy couple will be living on the reservation in a remodeled log cabin, where Dan, “the maintenance man,” has been living. Wendy Storm and Matt Pierson were married December 17. Please pray for these “newlyweds” and for Gary and Nancy, who now have an “empty teepee.”

NEW PAPOOSEA new papoose has arrived at SHBC, too.

Allison Nicole (6 lbs., 11 oz.) was bom to Brad (alias, Chief White Wolf) and Becky Rickart on September 3. All are doing well. (NOTE: The above weddings could mean that the patter of other papooses may not be far away. Imagine having a Grandma and Grandpa Storm Cloud at the reservation.)NEW LODGE PLANNED

A new building program is underway. Another lodge will be under construction soon at SHBC. A lodge fund has been started with a goal of $40,000 being set. To date, $18,000 has been received. This is a much needed facility as Scioto Hills looks to expand its retreat ministries in the days ahead.SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Below is a list o f events coming up in the months ahead:Saturday Workdays! (Just call ahead of time.)January 20-21 -Jr. High Retreat January 27-28 -Sr. High Retreat (with

special seminars for s p o n s o r s by th e O .A .R .B .C . Y outhCommittee)

February 3-4 - College/Career RetreatMarch 3-4 -Juniors Retreat

Please call the camp if you need extra flyers. It’s not too soon to register!

Our churches’ prayerful and financial support of the camp and its staff are greatly appreciated.NOTE: We have a new name. Due to our expanded retreat ministries, we are now called, Scioto Hills Baptist Camp & Retreat Center.

PROJECT ANGEL TREE B R I N G S C H R I S T M A S TO CHILDREN

Project Angel Tree brought Christmas into the lives of children whose parents are in prison. Angel Tree is sponsored by Prison Fellowship, an international Christian outreach directed by former presidential aide Chuck Colson. In Dayton and jmndreds of other American cities youngfforgotten victims of crime received gifts for Christmas from people they’ve never met.

Locally, the Cedarville College Student Government Association and CDR Radio (WCDR-FM 90.3) sponsored the project. Five Christmas trees at Cedarville College were decorated with paper angels that bore the names and gift wishes of children whose parents are incarcerated in Ohio penal institutions. Individuals selected angels, purchased the gifts listed, and gave them to angel tree volunteers who distributed them in time for Christmas.

Project director was CDR Radio staff member Mark Kordic who anticipated that 100 local children received gifts for Christmas. Similar angel trees were set up in seven participating churches in the Miami Valley area.

Project Angel Tree began December 5 at Cedarville College and continued until December 12.

CEDARVILLE STUDENTS HOST GRANDPARENTS

Cedarville College students invited their grandparents to join them on the campus for Grandparents Day activities on November 10. Almost 250 grandparents toured the campus, attended chapel, viewed the college media presentation, lunched with their grandchildren, and attended a reception in their honor hosted by college president Dr. Paul Dixon. Response indicated that Grandparents Day will be an annual event at the College.

“ One of these days my daughter Nancy will have her day in court — when she becomes a lawyer. And Cedarville College had a large part in preparing her for this profession.

“ I realize that children are an heritage of the Lord, and I believe that my responsibility to Nancy includes providing the best training possible toward fulfilling her career goals. I wanted a college which also would reinforce the values my wife and I had instilled in her and would strengthen her spiritually.

“ Because of these convictions I encouraged Nancy to attend Cedarville College. Her prelaw education there was first class academically. Her professors taught from a biblical perspective, and the total program of the College encouragedPREFERRED r i s k IN S . CO.

RECORD EN RO LLM EN TShowing a 20 percent increase, 218 fresh

men at Baptist Bible College flowed onto a campus with several newly-renovated buildings and a new soccer field. Indicating an upward surge in enrollment, they were joined by 125 sophomores, 81 juniors, 86 seniors, and 8 special students, making a total of 518 students for fall semester. A steady increase in married students has been noted the last few years. This year’s student body has 77 married students taking courses at the school. Job opportunity and quality of living in the area are given as some reasons for this, bolstering the main reason that the older student examines closely his educational needs and chooses a school for complete training in ministry.

A record enrollment of 96 students at Baptist Bible Seminary has been attributed to the innovation of module courses, and the opportunity to have served a one-year professional ministry internship before graduation. Taught in 2, 3, or 5 Weeks of concentrated study the module course is especially available to the active, working minister, as well as the full-time student. The availability of these courses, day-time or evening, have proved both beneficial and popular to workers who drive weekly or stay on campus for the session. The learning and growth made possible during the one-year internship is expected to coninue to bear fruit in years of ministry.

BANCROFT M ISSIONARY SCH O LA RSH IP FUND

A Christian businessman with a burden for missions, who supports what FBBC&S is doing, has made a challenging offer. He is looking for other friends of FBBC&S, who are interested in seeing more graduates headed for the mission field, to give to the Bancroft Missionary Scholarship Fund. This man is willing to match ajl gifts given during the 1988-89 school year up to $25,000!

Over the past three years $54,000 has been given, and with this additional $50,000 Faith will be able to grant very substantial and meaningful scholarships to at least 20 students every year. This is an endowment scholarship which means that only the interest is given away each year.

The number of students at Faith committed to missions is growing every year. During the 1987-88 school year, one in four students testified of God’s calling to some mission field. The Bancroft Missionary Scholarship Fund is our opportunity to help many of these young people in a very practical way.

If you feel God would have you give to this scholarship to further train men and women to serve Him in the area of missions, send your gift to Faith Baptist Bible College & Seminary, 1900 NW 4th Street, Ankeny, Iowa 50021 (phone: 515/964-0601). Please designate your gift for the Bancroft Missionary Scholarship Fund.

For further information, please contact Faith Baptist Bible College & Seminary, 1900 NW 4th Street, Ankeny, Iowa 50021 (515/964-0601).
