Last week our children learned about the importance of having a servant heart. They studied Psalm 100:2, the 5 Rings of Service, and learned how their small actions have a ripple effect on the people around them. They practiced having a servant heart by mailing postcards to our homebound friends, completing a Random Acts of Kindness BINGO Card, and baking sweet treats to put on their Giving Plate for a neighbor or friend. Here are some pictures of them practicing having a servant heart! This week, June 22-28, SBC Kids are studying the power of prayer and reading about Hannah in 1 Samuel. To practice talking to God, we are hosting a Church-Wide Prayer Walking Week! We would love for you and your family to join us in prayer by coming to the church during your free time this week to prayer walk! To do this, there will be stations set up at the glass door entrances around the outside of the church. On each of the windows, you will find a subject to pray for (friends, church, school, etc.) and window-safe markers that erase. We ask that your family prays together for that specific subject and then write or draw a picture of what you prayed for. These will be left up for the whole church to see the following week. Let’s cover our church doors and see the power of prayer! Congratulations to our Week 4 drawing winner, Addie Easterwood! Be sure to post your prayer walking pictures, memory verse challenge, servant heart BINGO cards, and skittle experiments to be entered in the drawing! Don’t forget to register your child for Vacation Bible School! Registration can be found on the church website under the Children’s tab or forms are available at the Information Center and Guest Services. VBS information is below! Who’s ready to dig into God’s word?! Concrete & Cranes VBS is back on! We are going to have VBS during 4 Wednesdays in July: July 8, 15, 22, and 29 from 5:30-8:00 PM. A small dinner will be served to children attending. VBS is for children who have COMPLETED Kindergarten-5th grade. Preschool VBS (3’s, 4’s, K) will be offered to children of VBS volunteers and church members. Nursery (Babies, 1’s, & 2’s) will be provided for VBS volunteers only. Registration is required to attend VBS! Even if your child is a church member and comes every year, please register them on the website (secondbaptistuc.com) or fill out a form located at the Information Center or Guest Services. This is needed for updated allergy records, emergency contacts, and to order supplies. Get your hard hats and tool belts ready and get excited! REMEMBER THAT REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED TO ATTEND VBS! With a happy heart, Bayleigh Powers FROM THE COUNSELOR’S DESK DECISIONS CHILDREN’S MINISTRY I had a great conversation last night about routine. Some of us are so fixated with routine that when things change, our world seems to fall apart. But even in those moments, we find that we can carve out a new routine. Our world has seemed to fall apart these last few months and our routines have been completely disrupted. Thankfully, we are transitioning into a new routine. Adult Life Groups are meeting in person again in July! Contact your Life Group leader for information on when and where your group is meeting. Bro. Sam YOUTH MINISTRY I want to share something with you that really spoke to be last week. “I still need to be rescued from me because as long as sin remains, I’ll be drawn to desire, think, say, and do what God names as evil.” (D. Tripp) The little moments of your life are profoundly important precisely because they’re little moments that happen to be at the address where you live. Think about it this way. The character of any person’s life is not shaped by two or three grand, big moments in life. A person’s character is formed in ten thousand little, mundane moments of everyday life. It’s the character that is formed in those little moments of life that determines how you think and respond in the few big moments of life that you encounter. Sure, they all happen in little moments that go by so quickly you may fail to notice them, but they depict a deeply needy heart. They remind you and me that we have not risen above our need for rescuing grace. They tell us that what we have found in Christ we still desperately need. They call us to be aware and to be serious; the war for our hearts is not over. Our need for a conquering Savior has not ended. These little moments actually point the finger at something that is huge— our struggle with sin and our need for the grace that can be found only in our Savior, the King, the Lamb, the Lord, Jesus Christ. This is the week that our students have been waiting for all summer. Thankfully we were able to throw together this Beach Retreat to Gulf Shores for our students. I am excited to have 50 students and 18 adults going with us. We are going to have a great time and a lot of fun in the sun, but will still be expecting God to move and draw us near to Him. Please take note that we are leaving Friday morning at 6:30 AM. We have some upcoming changes to our summer worship schedule that will start in July. Beginning July 5, ALL (middle school & high school) youth will have services on Sunday at 5:00 PM. Please note the time change. There will be no Wednesday night youth activities in July. This will allow them to volunteer to help with VBS on Wednesday nights. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Blessings, Bro. Brad Rhonda Clendenin Nolan Chandler By Letter EDUCATION 1 Thessalonians 5:14 says, “And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.” This verse sums up what we are all called to do as followers of Jesus Christ. To admonish means to warn. Since all of us have “sinned and fall short of the glory of God” we all need to be admonished from time to time— ongoing accountability. To encourage means to comfort or console. We all go through trials as James says, “count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds.” James says, “when” and not if. We all need comfort and consoling from time to time. To help means to assist. The weak refers to someone who is weak physically or morally. Who of us doesn’t get sick or need guidance even if we wont’ admit it? Be patient. Whether you are admonishing, encouraging, or helping, it will require patience. Patience means long- suffering. Whether you consider yourself a counselor or not, you are, as long as you are doing what God has commanded you to do as a follower of Jesus Christ. Therefore, in essence, we are all counselors, right? Because of Him, Bro. Russell “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” 3 John 1:4 I hope and pray that you had a great Father’s Day weekend. It was such a joy on Sunday morning to have young families stand before God and their Church to dedicate themselves, as well as their children, to the Lord. I hope that you will covet to pray for young families in our church. They have such a staggering task before them, trying to navigate today’s world, while raising Godly children. Yet, their success is ultimately the success of the church for generations to come. Like John, our greatest ambition as fathers should be to see our children grow up walking in the faith. I am grateful to be part of a church that doesn’t just value children, but invests in their lives, programs and discipleship. I would be foolish to act as if things are wonderful and filled with joy. Unless you are living under a rock, you know that we are facing challenging times in our nation. Covid-19, racism, injustice, police support and brutality, economic uncertainty, unemployment, division, riots, looting, lockdowns, protests and the list goes on. Twenty years ago, the average person would discuss these issues among their fellow employees and circles of connection. However, in 2020, we are all engaged in a world of social media that connects us instantaneously across the globe. Our consumption of information has risen beyond comprehension, yet we are no better off. We have bought the lie that our opinion matters. Proverbs 17:27 says, “ Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.” That verse is a reminder especially to myself, that my ability to defend my position and post my point of view is not the sign of wisdom. In all my posts and online debates, I can honestly say, that no one has ever been persuaded to change their beliefs. Instead of sharing your opinion or the quote of someone who aligns with your opinion, what if you spent that time praying? What if you simply posted a verse of scripture? Could you imagine the difference it would make, if we committed to being evangelists instead of activists? I love you and am committed to praying for you all by name. While our ability to visit and connect are limited, I am so grateful that we can intercede on behalf of one another still. If you have any need, please don’t hesitate to let us know. For His glory, Pastor Justin FROM THE PASTOR
