Declamation Contest
Debates have always been the
fascinations of human race, so much
so that the option of negotiations is
always considered to be the best
possible solution to any problem
encountered in the realm of human
life.
MCE participated in APDC 2014
at Khyber Medical College Peshawar.
The competition took place from 20th to
22nd May 2014. The team from MCE
comprised of GC Umer Anjum and GC
Irtiza Ziyafat in English serious and
Urdu humorous categories. The
competition was attended by more
than 35 teams from all over Pakistan.
The team of MCE performed
outstandingly well and was the first
team to qualify for the final round. In
the final round, the team of MCE again
performed outstandingly well and after
a series of competitive debates
managed to win the championship.
The speakers GC Umer Anjum and
GC Irtiza Ziyafat also secured
individual prizes in respective
categories, becoming the Second
Best English speaker and Best
Humorous Speaker of the house. GC
Irtiza Ziyafat’s performance in the final
round was outstanding and by the
team effort MCE managed to lift the
Champion’s Trophy. In the end it was
an excellent ending of a term filled with
the excellent aura of debates and
declamations and MCE becoming a
part of it.

MCE Tennis Championship 2014
On 14th May 2014, Intra MCE
Tennis (Doubles) Championship took
place. Teams from Cadet Engineering
Degrees, Officer Degrees and Faculty
participated in the event. The final
match was played on the 20th on May
between the teams of CED 81 and
MCE Faculty. The MCE Faculty team
comprising Brig Syed Basim Saeed,
Chief Instructor (CEMS) won the final
match after a tough competition and
fight put up by the energetic cadets of
CED 81. Major General Anwar Ul Haq
Chaudhry, Commandant MCE graced
the occasion with his presence as the
chief guest and distributed prizes
amongst the winning and the runner-
up teams.
End Semester Exams
The end semester exam for all CDs /
ODs being concluded in the Exam Hall
of MCE. The exams of OD 78 / CD 79
was conducted from 9 May 2014 to
16 May 2014 due impending Survey
Camp scheduled from 18 may 2014 at
Abbottabad. While the exam of rest of
the ODs/CDs is underway and will
finish on 6 Jun 2014.
Visit to Askari Cement Factory, Wah
A visit to Askari Cement Factory
Wah, was organized by Military
College of Engineering for CED-75
and OD-74 on 6th May 2014. Askari
Cement Factory is one of the largest
cement producers in the country with
international repute. The visit allowed
the students to view the manufacturing
process of cement and helped them
crystallize their understanding of the
theoretical concepts behind the taught
subjects.
MCE Football Championship 2014
Inter MCE Football competition was
scheduled from 13-19 May 2014. Final
match of the championship was played
on the 19th May 2014 between the
teams of CED 77 and OD 74. The
match was won by CED 77 by One
Goal. GC Hamid was declared as the
best player of the tournament. The
match was played on MCE ground.
The chief guest of the match was
Brigadier Syed Basim Saeed, Chief
Instructor (CEMS).
MCE Hockey Championship 2014
Inter MCE Football competition was
scheduled from 20-23 May 2014. Final
match of the championship was played
on the 23th May 2014 between the
teams of OD 80 and CED 77. The
match was won by OD 80 by one goal.
Captain Saad was declared as the
best player of the match. The match
was played on MCE ground. The chief
guest of the match was Brigadier Syed
Basim Saeed, Chief Instructor
(CEMS).
MCE Cricket Championship 2014
Inter MCE Cricket competition was
held at MCE ground and final match of
the championship was played on the
between the teams of OD 74 and CED
75. The match was won by OD 74.The
match was played on MCE ground.
The chief guest of the match was
Major General Anwar Ul Haq
Chaudhry, Commandant MCE.
Ex-students of MCE and Ist Rector Nust visited Alma Mater
Senior Sapper Officers’ Get-together
was held at MCE on 10th May 2014.
More than 50 retired and serving
senior Sapper Officers of the Corps of
Engineers, who were presently
heading many esteemed organizations
of the country, participated in the get
together. These esteemed guests
included various ex-Commandants of
the Alma Mater and ex-Engineer-in-
Chief’s of the Corps of engineers. First
and present Rectors of the NUST
Lieutenant General (Retired) Syed
Shujaat Hussain Shah and Lieutenant
General (Retired) Muhammad Asghar
were also participated in the Get-
together. The purpose of the get
together was to revive old memories of
the Alma Mater and to brief esteemed
guests about development in training
and infrastructural at the College
through ages. The get-together was
also valuable in terms of having
valuable inputs from the visiting
dignitaries for further development in
training and facilities.
Major Dr Muhammad Maqbool Sadiq of MCE (NUST) is awarded of
Intellectual Property Rights by U.S Patent Office
in the Form of U.S Patent Application
Major Dr Muhammad Maqbool Sadiq of
MCE has been granted intellectual
property rights by the U.S Patent office in
the form of a patent application, US 2014/
0060388 A1 dated 6 March 2014, as the
first inventor in the field of Ultra-High
Performance Concretes. The title of his
patent is Ultra-High Performance
Concrete Reinforced with Low-Cost
Graphite Nanomaterials and
Microfibers, and Method for Production
Thereof. This patent was based on the
PhD research of Maj Dr Muhammad
Maqbool Sadiq which he carried out at
Michigan State University, East Lansing,
USA. This patent is, however, unique in a
sense that in the well-trodden area of civil
engineering, new products and methods
are very rare and unique. This is a
distinctive honour for a scholar to be
awarded a patent in the area of his
research and Maj Dr Muhammad Maqbool
Sadiq is the first honoured Pakistani who
has been awarded a patent in the area of
civil engineering, in recent past.
The research was funded by U.S. Army,
Department of Defence (U.S. Army
Contract # W912HZ-09-C-0025) and had
resulted into a very practical product
which can be used both for military and
civilian purposes.
Maj Dr Maqbool is an exceptionally
dedicated teacher and has a keen
sense to identify and deal with
research problems. He has therefore
contributed significantly through his
teaching, research and comradeship.
He has also been nominated for
President’s Medal for Technology for
the year 2014 from MCE (NUST).
Publication of Research Paper in a Reputed Journal
A research paper titled ‘Vacuum
Distribution with Depth in Vertical
Drains and Soil During Preloading’
authored by Dr. Abdul Qudoos Khan of
Military College of Engineering and
Prof. Dr. Gholamreza Mesri of
University of Illinois at Urnbana
Champaign, USA has been published
in April 2014 in ‘Geomechanics &
Engineering – An International
Journal’; A well reputed, ISI indexed
journal, by Techno Press, South
Korea. The journal has a five year
impact factor of 0.331.
